CONGRATULATIONS to last week’s mystery photo winners, John Anderson with a correct guess of “The mallet is a brass infilled joiners mallet. Infilled indicates that it’s hollow with an oak striking surface pounded into place making the striking surface replaceable.
It’s used for striking chisels, used to cut mortises for mortise and tenon joints, dovetails, etc……a lot of old school woodworking with hand chisels.
It could have also been used anywhere a nin-marribg mallet was needed (such as armorers assembly, etc).!.” Great job, John.!
Correct Answer is: A non-sparking hammer for use on cannon or in proximity to powder or fuzes, British 1800s
Thanks to Tony Watts at Bapty, Ltd for the mystery item…
