Ruger Announces New SP101 Revolver in .22 LR

Sturm, Ruger & Company, Inc. announces a new SP101 revolver chambered for the .22 Long Rifle, the most popular cartridge in the world. The new .22 LR Ruger SP101 is true to Ruger standards of rugged reliability and perfect for those seeking a quality small frame revolver. This new SP101 will appeal to firearm instructors and enthusiasts who want to practice and perfect their shooting skills, or just spend time plinking with inexpensive rimfire ammo. Ruger re-engineered the SP101 to chamber eight rounds instead of the traditional six, improved the sights, and maintained the same classic features that were the SP101. The 30-ounce double-action revolver is made of weather resistant stainless steel with a satin finish for longevity and good looks. The walnut grip panels inset in the one-piece rubber grip are checkered and engraved. The revolver features a fully adjustable square-notch rear sight and fiber-optic, square-post front sight. The 4.2-inch barrel features a half shroud covering the ejector rod. For more information contact Sturm, Ruger and Company, Inc., Dept. SAR, 200 Ruger Road, Prescott, AZ 86301.
M240 Machine Gun Foregrip and Rail Adapter

Special Tactical Services, LLC, now has a new adapter kit that allows the user to add useful accessories to the M240 machine gun by means of a rail (patent pending). This short rail adapter assembly fitted to the forward mount lug is primarily designed for rapid and rugged attachment of vertical foregrip assemblies but the attachment is also suitable to accessory bipod assemblies that utilize a Mil-Std 1913 interface (Picatinny Rail Grabber). As the pivot point has been moved closer to the operator, the STS adapter provides a more natural handling point and improved ergonomics. Bipods attached in this location allow for a more rapid traverse and offer handling characteristics that emulate the Mk43/M60-E3 configuration for quicker engagement of multiple targets dispersed across the field of fire. Installation is quick and easy. Simply pull the center pin all the way out to the right side. The pin is captive and will stop in the fully disengaged position. Place the adapter over the receiver forward the mounting hole location. Push the pin all the way left, through the receiver lug into the fully engaged position and securely attach the rail accessory or grip of your choice. STS does not recommend the attachment of polymer or cast metal (MIM) rail interface material. Plastic or rubberized grips are fine; so long as they incorporate a high quality machined metal rail grabber. For more information you can contact them at Special Tactical Services, LLC, Dept. SAR, Diamond Springs Road Suite B, Virginia Beach, VA 23455. Phone: (757) 554-0699. Fax: (208) 693-9692.
New SureShell Shotshell Carrier from Mesa Tactical

Mesa Tactical, provider of high quality tactical accessories and gear to law enforcement, military and civilian shooters, announced the availability of its four-, six-, and eight-shot SureShell shotshell carrier and optics rail assemblies for Mossberg’s Model 500 and Model 590 pump action shotguns. Mesa Tactical’s aluminum SureShell shotshell carriers are an industry standard and the preferred choice of most federal, state, and municipal law enforcement agencies due to their hard anodized aircraft aluminum construction and fail-safe shell retention system.

Mesa Tactical has been supplying shell carriers for the Mossberg 500 platform since November 2005, but this current announcement highlights the availability of integrated shell carriers and optics rail assemblies. Similar products have been available for the Benelli M2, Benelli M4 and Remington 870 platforms for years, but this is the first time integrated shell carriers and rails have been offered for the Mossberg shotguns. SureShell shell carrier and rail assemblies for the Mossberg pump shotguns feature four-, six- or eight-shell shotshell yokes fitted to a bracket incorporating a Mil-Std 1913 (NATO STANAG 2324) Picatinny optics rail. The rail bracket is secured to the shotgun receiver using the optics rail mounting holes already drilled and tapped into the Mossberg receiver at the factory. The optics rail stretches most of the length of the shotgun receiver, or about 4.5 inches, allowing the mounting of a red dot scope or other target acquisition aids. In addition to the standard 4.5 inch rails, Mesa Tactical is also offering four-, six- and eight-shell carriers in a full length (20 inch) configuration. Twenty inch rails allow the use of back-up iron sights (BUIS) in addition to optics. The full length rails are supported at the front by Mesa Tactical’s new Magon magazine clamps. A unique feature of the full length rail and Magon clamp system is the ability to completely field strip the weapon, including removal of the barrel and bolt carrier, without tools, leaving the rail and clamp intact. A full length rail is also available with no shell carrier. For more information contact them at Mesa Tactical, Dept. SAR, 1760 Monrovia Ave., #B1, Costa Mesa, CA 92627. Phone: (949) 642-3337. Fax: (949) 642-3339. Website: www.mesatactical.com.

AccuCover Increases Accuracy While Reducing Parallax Error

British designed and manufactured, the AccuCover is an entirely new concept in scope cover design. As you would expect from a manufacturer of quality scope covers, it provides excellent protection of your scope and lens against whatever the elements can throw at it. However, what really makes the AccuCover unique is its ingenious patented design which helps you soot both faster and more accurately. This is done quite simply with the addition of high visibility markings on the rim of the scope cover. When you aim, your eyes traditionally focus on the crosshairs within the scope and the target behind. With AccuCover, your peripheral vision also come into play, sensing the four markings on the rim and helping to keep your eye aligned with both crosshairs and target. By simply aligning the brightly colored chevrons with the crosshairs, the eye becomes centralized to the scope. Its simplicity is its beauty. With all three elements aligned, this not only allows you to acquire the target faster, it also ensures a more accurate, consistent shot. The benefits of the AccuCover are:

Reduced parallax error – excellent cheek weld delivering greater accuracy

Reduced rifle cant – less rifle tile delivering greater accuracy

Faster eye alignment – especially in dusk/dawn lighting conditions

Silent push-button opening – ensuring a stealthy approach

Cover folds flat to scope – eliminating undergrowth entanglement

Water resistant – as you’d expect from a first class scope cover.

AccuCover is already being used by British police forces for firearm training and on sniper rifles and the military is also learning of the benefits of this simple product. It comes in three sizes, which fit up to 99% of all ocular rifle ends. For more information, contact them at AccuZero Ltd, P.O. Box 6387, Leighton Buzzard, Beds, LU7 6BY Great Britain. Phone: +44 (0) 7958 195446. Website: www.accucover.com.

ATI Now Offers New B&D 37mm Launchers

American Tactical Imports is proud to announce that they are offering the entire line of Bates & Dittus (B&D) products. B&D is a relatively new company that brings exciting products to the industry. B&D specializes in 37mm launchers of several varieties including a pistol configuration (SML-37) and the new under barrel launcher (UBL-37). In January, the company made a formal announcement that gave ATI exclusive worldwide rights to distribute all B&D products. Now, these products are stocked and ready for shipment through ATI.

B&D launchers are made of 6061 aircraft grade aluminum and 4140 hardened steel. They can handle 37mm ammunition including flares, smoke and pyrotechnic rounds for civilian use and batons, CS gas, rubber pellets and other less-than-lethal options for law enforcement and military. The launchers in the B&D product lineup include the following: The Original, the Top Break Launcher, or TBL, comes in a number of possible configurations. Standard is a 12-inch barrel with a full-length upper Picatinny rail, and a 1x Red/Green dot laser sight. The TBL is a single action/exposed hammer launcher available with solid poly rifle style or telescoping stocks, horizontal or vertical foregrip, and 12- or 16-inch barrel length. Wood stocks are also available as an option (16WSW). The Survival Mate Launcher, or SML, is the pistol configuration 37mm launcher, offered in 6- and 12-inch barrel lengths. The latter comes equipped with a vertical foregrip. The Extreme Duty Top Break, or ExD-37, caters to law enforcement and military and is intended to function consistently with training tactics; it is DAO with an internal hammer and approximately a 15 lb. trigger pull and available in 12- and 16-inch lengths, both with a custom aluminum vertical foregrip. Last is the Under Barrel Launcher, or UBL. It is the B&D recreation of the M-203. It has a 12-inch barrel with a full-length upper Picatinny rail for attachment to a Picatinny rail-equipped AR-15 style weapon.
New PEL-6 Secutor From Strategos International

Strategos International, LLC announces the most highly evolved hand-held and weapon-mounted lighting tool; the PEL-6 Secutor, now available to tactical officers for close quarter conflicts and low light environments. Strategos was the first to recognize that operators required a complete paradigm shift in light tool operation and created a tool that would change the market and affect low-light training methodology. The LedWave PEL-6 Secutor is the latest technology in illumination tools using feature-rich and intuitive electronics.

The Secutor, named after a class of gladiator in ancient Rome, utilizes a 212 LED that produces over 120 Lumens of bright white light. Featuring a patented user interface of a rotating tailcap, the flashlight enables the user to program constant on modes thus enabling functions to be activated with one hand. The user does not have to alter his grip to push buttons or rotate bezel rings to achieve immediate tactical functionality. The Secutor allows the operator to adjust the levels of light from low (variably and fully adjustable) to its unique high output disorienting strobe light. The original design was one of the first to incorporate rapid strobe disorientation into a handheld, everyday flashlight. The strobe function was designed to affect adversaries by reducing or eliminating their ability to maintain balance, peripheral vision and depth perception, thus allowing operators to act quickly and maintain situational awareness. The Secutor Momentary and Constant On switches are easily accessed with a one or two finger rotation of the tail cap. The unique lock-out system on the Secutor prevents the light being accidentally activated in high risk diminished light situations and also when storing the light. The Secutor is easily activated from the lock-out position under duress with the snap of the thumb or fingers. The new PEL-6 Secutor, the next generation of tactical light technology, features more stable electronics preventing unintentional battery drain and providing better programming stability. The new surface coating of the Secutor is made from a super durable ceramic that prevents scratches better than the previous model.
Bushnell Elite Tactical Scopes Are Professional Grade

The new Bushnell Elite Tactical series scopes are built to withstand the rigors of the field, whether in military and law enforcement situations, three gun competition or countless rounds at the range. The Elite Tactical series features the best Bushnell has to offer – optical excellence, precision engineering and rock-solid reliability. With fully multi-coated optics and the new anti-reflective Ultra Wide Band (UWB) Coating, Elite Tactical riflescopes deliver light transmission across more of the visible light spectrum than before. What that means for shooters is enhanced clarity, exceptional brightness and true color from dawn to dusk. The 100 percent waterproof, fog proof and shock proof Elite Tactical series is now more reliable than ever, thanks to the newly introduced Argon-purging process. Argon provides added resistance against corrosion, longer seal life and reduced chances of fogging. Another benefit of Argon is that it conducts heat at a slower rate, drastically reducing thermal conduction within the scope to provide long-lasting performance. Bushnell takes all-weather performance a step further with its patented RainGuard HD lens coating. The permanent, water-resistant finishes causes moisture from rain, snow, sleet and condensation to bead up and scatter less light, giving shooters a clear view when weather conditions become a challenge. Elite Tactical scope tubes are hammer-forged from high-quality, rugged T6061 aluminum. The scopes feature target turrets for rapid adjustment to range and windage. The Elite Tactical Series product line includes seven riflescopes, including one fixed 10x magnification scope and two first focal plane riflescopes with illuminated reticles and .1 Mil adjustments. The scopes are backed by the Elite Bullet-Proof Warranty – a no questions asked one-year replacement warranty. Contact Bushnell Outdoor Products, Dept.
Whether plinking, practicing, competing or training, a .22 LR alternative is financially desirable and very beneficial. While there have been several .22 LR pistols over the last century to choose from, there have been very few factory full-size versions that share fit and function with the original gun. Of the few that do, they are typically expensive. The ATI GSG 1911 .22 LR pistol mimics the size, weight feel and function so closely it can be used with the factory .45 ACP 1911 gear, and at an affordable price.

We received the GSG 1911 for testing and evaluation several months in advance of this scheduled article. While we like to bring our readers the “latest and greatest” as soon as we can, we wanted to put some time in on this one and perform a mini endurance test before going to print.

Since the primary subject matter of Small Arms Review is NFA Firearms, we only thought it made sense to test it as a platform for the numerous small and effective rimfire suppressors available today. We immediately ordered a thread adapter from Gemtech as well as a Gemtech Outback II, a Bowers Paradigm and a SilencerCo Sparrow.

Initial Observations

Although we have had the opportunity to handle several of ATI’s (American Tactical Imports) other offerings in the past, they have all been based on military-style rifles and carbines and we didn’t know what to expect with a 1911 pistol. This is a gun many of us “cut our teeth” on and most shooters have a deep appreciation for this design so we knew expectations would be high and criticism in any flaw whatsoever would come easy out of familiarity.

The size of the GSG 1911 and magazines are so close to that of the original .45 ACP version that every piece of original 1911 gear the author used during the extended test period fit perfectly.

The day it arrived it didn’t take long before we needed to hit the test range and do some initial function and performance tests. Given an MSRP that we consider quite reasonable, we didn’t have high expectations for the cosmetic features, but were quickly and pleasantly surprised. Right out of the box we were extremely impressed with several characteristics. The most noticeable at first sight were the checkered wooden grips. Our test gun had dark checkered grips with a large diamond pattern over each grip screw. Further examination revealed an extended beavertail safety, an enlarged ambidextrous safety, a combat hammer and an adjustable trigger. The rear of the slide is heavily serrated to the rear, and the finish is dark and uniform on all parts. The sights are a popular 3-dot style, drift adjustable for windage. To adjust for elevation, 3 different front sights are included each with a gradual increase for point of impact/point of aim synchronization.

The wooden grips supplied on the GSG 1911 are comfortable and attractive.

It is uncommon to purchase a new firearm and already have a complete complement of holsters, magazine pouches, cases, etc that fit like custom gear. It also allows the shooter to train, compete and practice with familiar equipment.

Though the magazines hold 10 rounds of .22 LR, they have been built to simulate the weight and feel of a standard 1911 .45 ACP magazine. They are very heavy and rugged and even fit standard magazine pouches. A magazine has to be inserted in order to drop the hammer, even on an empty chamber as is very common with many imported pistols.

The rear sights are easy to use and provide a fast target acquisition. The front sights have 3 different blades available for elevation adjustment and are clearly and cleanly seen when used with a sound suppressor such as the Gemtech Outback II pictured.

The only real key that it was chambered in .22 LR and not the usual .45 ACP was the very light tension of the slide spring. If it were gripped like a normal heavy .45 ACP and returned to the rear, it would immediately be obvious that it was not.

On to the Range

The first order was to just test fire the gun as it was shipped before altering anything. This is a “must do” as changes and additions can alter performance at times and we wanted to start from the beginning and just fire for function. There were several shooters on the initial day and we ran several hundred rounds of ammo in rapid fashion.

Not a single malfunction was observed and it was time to adjust the sights. Since all shooters were shooting at 15-25 yards and consistently hitting high, we changed the front blade to the highest sight provided. Every group thereafter was placed in its intended spot. No windage adjustment was necessary.

After several more magazines to “proof” the sight adjustment we immediately installed the Gemtech thread adapter with the included wrench and started running it suppressed. The first candidate was the Bowers Paradigm followed by the Gemtech Outback II and the SilencerCo Sparrow. While all ammo continued to run with great success it was the opinion of this writer that the Federal Gold Medal Match ammo really shined through.

The Gemtech Barrel Adapter is easy to install and proved a great platform for all 1/2×28 silencers tested with the GSG 1911. Also pictured is the thread protector for use when the sound suppressor is not being utilized.

After numerous boxes of ammo, several targets and all combinations of sound suppressors the GSG 1911 continued to draw praise from the test shooters.

Multi-Purpose Package

While .22 LR guns are often associated with inexpensive shooting and generally an all around inexpensive alternative to “real” shooting, the mix of test shooters this first day found an entirely new reason to not only want, but “need” to purchase one of these guns for themselves. There were 3 or 4 shooters who immediately decided to purchase one or two at that first outing. All the test shooters are firearms instructors for Alpha Group, LLC and though they all have specialty classes in different disciplines, we are all also NRA Basic Pistol and Personal Protection Instructors and assist people in basic firearms introduction and training on their road to advanced gun ownership and obtaining their concealed carry permits. Since many students are adults, including many grown men, a full-size pistol with little to no recoil or noise can be extremely beneficial. When working with younger shooters and more timid students, the loss of a loud noise in training greatly assists them in focusing on the basic principals while ratcheting down the intimidation factor several-fold. This helps from developing a flinch that they need to work hard to lose in the future and just makes the overall experience much more pleasurable.

Extended Testing

Since the timeframe was wide from delivery to the publishing of this article, the GSG1911 was used in numerous scenarios not usually available in a more time conscious deadline period. At the time of this writing, the GSG1911 has been part of the authors gear bag in his capacity as a licensed ADC Agent. Several calls a year come in to deal with small and large game animals involved in human interaction that have to be rectified. Some are in urban areas where the use of a larger caliber creates concern and confusion and the suppressed .22 LR GSG 1911 excelled. Even more important than sound reduction is pinpoint accuracy in these situations and with the Federal Gold Medal ammo it was not only extremely quiet, but cycled every time and extremely accurate. At this point it has replaced the previous suppressed .22 LR pistol in the ADC gear bag and has yet to disappoint in any situation.

The GSG 1911 trigger provides a nice break and is adjustable and stylish.

Also as assumed, the GSG1911 was used for training in several shooting courses from basic pistol classes to entry-level shoot-house runs and even rimfire competitions. It always ranked as the most requested firearm in these entry-level classes and has found a home with several more instructors as of this writing. To our surprise, even some of the female shooters with smaller hands have been more comfortable and had a better shooting experience with the full-size GSG 1911 over many of the smaller and very common .22 LR pistols offered in the same classes.

Conclusions

While the price point is extremely attractive on the GSG 1911 .22 LR, please don’t let that fool you into believing you are buying a substandard firearm. Several shooters who use their firearms in a professional capacity have had the opportunity to test the GSG 1911 .22 LR and all have had a favorable impression. Many have even purchased their own after testing the T&E gun sent to SAR. I can’t think of a higher endorsement than that.

The extended controls such as the safety and beavertail grip safety and comfortable to use and easy to handle for anyone familiar with the traditional 1911 family of firearms.

While the first impression of a standard .22 pistol is generally a plinker, the GSG 1911 has proven useful in several other areas. As a training tool it has been an extremely successful addition and has been handled by dozens and dozens of students with favorable impressions. If your interest in this firearm is for plinking or target shooting it will not disappoint. If you are one of several die-hard 1911 fans who just want a break in the noise, recoil or ammo expense without sacrificing valuable training and practice, you may find a great value in this pistol and have the added bonus of using your standard holsters, mag pouches and carry rigs. If you want a gun that feels like a gun as a suppressor host it has even more appeal. As someone who has the opportunity to use firearms in several capacities on an almost daily basis, this writer has added a GSG 1911 to his gear bag in a permanent fashion.

Right side of the GSG 1911 illustrates the ambidextrous safety, the serrated slide and the factory markings.

Although the magazine is a 10-round .22LR magazine it mimics the size, weight and handling of a standard .45 ACP 1911 magazine.

As a long-time shooter, every once in a while something completely unexpected really exceeds any preconceived notions and the GSG 1911 may be as valuable a find for you as it was for this writer. At the MSRP of $359.95 it is a small gamble to take with the potential for a large payoff.

GSG 1911 Disassembly: Remove the magazine. Pull the slide release through the left side and remove it. 2 – Push the small pin to the rear of the slide release from the right side of the frame and pull it through the left side. 3 – Remove the small Allen screw with provided wrench on the right side of the frame directly in front of the vacant hole for the slide release. 4 – Remove the slide assembly to the front. 5 – Depress the recoil spring plug and rotate the barrel bushing clockwise, a quarter turn. Keep constant pressure on spring plug and slowly release it allowing the pressure to subside and remove the plug from the front. 6 – Remove spring and guide from the rear, letting it slowly drop down as you remove it. 7 – Remove the barrel assembly from the front. The gun is now field stripped and ready for cleaning and maintenance. Reassemble in reverse order.

It could be safe to assume that when the first 1911 pistol was test-fired, inspected and sold, there would be little consideration that an article would be penned 100 years later in 2011 on a new offering of the same design. The time-tested and proven 1911 series handgun is not only still available, but going strong. They are still highly sought after and manufactured in numerous configurations. When modern technology and technique meets such a proven design, we can expect this trend to last for many more years.

American Tactical Imports is quickly becoming well known for offering high quality firearms at very reasonable prices from several points on the globe. The firearms we are focusing on today originate in the Philippines and are manufactured by Shooters Arms Manufacturing (SAM).

At the time of this writing the FX 45 1911 series pistols are available in 5 configurations: The Military, the GI, the Titan, the Titan SS and the Thunderbolt. All are steel receivers and parts with solid mahogany grips. While some models are reminiscent of classic 1911 offerings, other designs are modernized and geared towards the competitive or professional shooter.

The FX 45 Lineup

The Military most resembles the traditional, standard size 1911. With its 5-inch barrel and 8-round magazine capacity, it has a full length slide with light, rear serrations, and an overall length of 8.46 inches. The sights are a fairly low profile and the rear sight is drift adjustable for windage. The hammer is a knurled, wide spur. The mainspring housing on this model has a lanyard loop like some early original military designs.

Size comparison, from above. Left to right – Thunderbolt, Military, GI, Titan, Titan SS.

The GI is similar in size and handling to a standard Combat Commander. Though the grip length is the same as the Military model to utilize factory 8-round magazines, the slide and barrel are shorter to aid in concealability without giving up magazine capacity. The hammer is the rounded Commander style and the grip safety has an extended beavertail. This model has an extended safety. The barrel length is 4.25 inches and an overall length of 7.87 inches. Trigger and sights are the same as the Military model.

(Left to right) Rear sights – Military/GI models, Titan models and Thunderbolt model.

The Titan falls in between the size of the Defender model and the Officers model with a barrel length of 3.125 inches and an overall length of 6.93 inches for optimum concealability. The magazine well and grip are also shorter and the magazine capacity is 7 rounds. The mag-well is slightly beveled for easier reloading. This design has a lightened trigger and also employs the same hammer and extended beavertail as the GI model. The sights are a higher profile and are drift adjustable for windage with a black rear blade and white dot front sight. The slide is heavily serrated in the rear on this model. The hammer is the rounded Commander style and the grip safety has an extended beavertail. This model also has an extended safety. The weight of this model is 1.87 pounds.

Mahogany Grips supplied on all FX 45 models are checkered and attractive.

The Titan SS is almost the same as the Titan except it is stainless steel with a matte finished slide and polished frame. The slide is heavily serrated front and rear. All other specifications are the same as the standard Titan.

The Thunderbolt is similar in size and shape to the 5-inch barreled GI model with several upgrades from the standard design. It has the addition of a mounting rail beneath the barrel in front of the trigger guard, an extended beavertail grip safety, a lightened trigger, an extended and heavily beveled mag-well, a stippled grip both front and rear, a lightweight trigger, an extended ambidextrous safety, a heavily serrated slide front and rear, and fully adjustable 3-dot sights for windage and elevation. Like the GI model, it uses standard 8-round magazines. The overall length and weight are also the same as the GI model at 8.46 inches and 2.31 pounds respectively.

All models were supplied with checkered mahogany grips, and the grip style is standard of this design in case the user desires to change to aftermarket grips.

Initial Examination

Upon opening and examining all models listed above we were immediately very impressed. Each pistol was shipped in a heavy cardboard box lined with soft Styrofoam, in a sealed plastic bag with a light oiling for protection. This writer cringed at the “shiny” appearance of each gun, as it is a personal preference for matte finishes on such firearms. That cringe turned to joy as soon as the oil was wiped from each pistol. With the exception of the stainless steel Titan SS, all were finished with a deep, dark uniform finish. Even the stainless model had a matte slide. Of course the finish is just a personal preference and some like them as shiny as possible.

The FX 45 Thunderbolt has an extended slide release and extended ambidextrous safety.

Once they were cleaned the actions were checked and it was time for a trigger test. Every trigger broke like glass. There was not the slightest bit of creep in any of them and every one had a very short fast break. They all greatly exceeded our expectations in this area.

The fit was very tight with little to no noticeable movement between the slide and the frame on any model. They all moved slick and smooth and almost had a hand-fitted feel to them.

The accessory rail under the barrel of the FX 45 Thunderbolt is approximately 2 inches in length and should accommodate almost any standard pistol accessory such as lasers or lights.

The markings are very clean and clear, from the largest logo to the smallest importation and serial number marking.

Specifications Chart.

The mahogany grips were all checkered without any noticeable blemishes and the Titan models both have a large diamond in the areas of each screw.

Heavily serrated slides of the Titan model. Notice the Titan SS is serrated front and rear.

Range Time

Several types of ammo were tested with all the FX 1911 model guns. Since there are no distinct mechanical differences between other 1911 types, the testing did not include muzzle velocity testing. Our focus was on function and practical accuracy. All groups were fired at 10 yards (30 feet) off hand with a combination of Wolf 230 grain FMJ, Remington 230 grain FMJ and Winchester Bulk (often referred to as white box) 230-grain FMJ ammo. All models functioned great, and only 1 shooter had a few rounds that did not feed completely during the initial break-in. It may have been a combination of the new guns, the heavy internal oil and below freezing temperatures, but on 3 rounds total, in 2 different guns (1 in 1 gun and 2 in another) the slide needed a light tap forward to completely feed the round and close up. Other than that there was not a single failure to feed, fire or eject. By the end of a few boxes of ammo everything was working excellent. The groups were impressive and definitely on par with other manufacturers’ 1911 models, especially given the testing was done in a windy 21ºF environment. The Thunderbolt performed exceptionally well duplicating a few “ragged 1-hole 8-shot groups” right away.

Conclusions

All who had the opportunity to examine the FX 1911 guns from ATI were very impressed with the performance, the crisp triggers and the fit and finish. None were informed of the MSRP until after getting their initial impressions. When shown the pricing, the comments were a unanimous expletive variant of “No way!” Since many of our testers worked with us on some of the more expensive variants we have tested in the past few years, they were all under the assumption these must be a high-end line as well. The extremely reasonable prices were found almost unbelievable to all who had the chance to test and handle them. This writer agrees. No matter the model, they are a great value for your money and should not disappoint even the most ardent 1911 fan.

The front grip surface of the FX Thunderbolt is heavily stippled as well as the main spring housing on the rear. Notice the heavily beveled mag-well for fast reloading.

No matter if you are looking for a new starting piece for a serious race gun build, or you are buying one expecting better than average performance out of the box, if you are or want to be a 1911 aficionado, you may end up finding a “new favorite” pistol for a lot less money than you ever expected to spend.

By Jason M. Wong

Small Arms Review is proud to announce several new product releases planned for the 2009 SHOT show, scheduled to take place in Orlando, Florida from January 15-18, 2009. As the largest domestic firearm industry trade show, admission to the Shooting, Hunting, and Outdoor Trade show is limited to those that work within the firearms industry.

Interordnance

Interordnance announced several new rifles for the U.S. civilian market. The STG-22 is a full sized .22 LR caliber AK-style rifle. Manufactured entirely in the U.S., (including the receiver and barrel) the fire control parts are identical to full sized AK rifles. With the increasing cost of 7.62×39 ammunition, the ability to fire cheap and available .22 LR from an AK platform should be welcome to many hard core shooters. The STG-22 uses a proprietary magazine that appears to be related to the East German .22 caliber magazines that are commonly available within the U.S. civilian market. A retail price has not been announced as of press time.

Small Arms Review previously reported the manufacture of semiautomatic MP40 carbines by Sport System Dittrich of Germany. Manufactured to the same original manufacturing dimensions and specifications as the originals, parts and magazines reportedly fit the Sport System Dittrich replicas. Interordnance announced that they have agreed to act as the exclusive U.S. importer for the semiautomatic MP40 carbine. Retail price is expected to be about $6,000.

Century Arms

Century Arms has several newly modified firearms available for the civilian market. The Goryunov SGM (SG43) belt-fed machine gun has been converted to semiautomatic function only using newly manufactured U.S. made receivers, barrels and Polish parts. A Russian designed machine gun chambered in 7.62x54R, the firearm is sold complete with caisson mount, and unique non-disintegrating belt. Century also has three semiautomatic light machine guns – the DP28, DPM, and DTM. Fed from a pan magazine similar to a Lewis gun, these three firearms are also manufactured with new U.S. made receivers, barrels and Polish parts and are chambered in 7.62×39.

Century Arms Goryunov semiautomatic belt fed rifle. The firearm is sold complete with the wheeled caisson and a unique non-disintegrating belt. (Jason Wong)

The Sterling submachine gun was used with great success by the British Army. Until recently, there were no semiautomatic versions available for sale in the U.S. Century Arms designed and produced a semiautomatic Sterling that qualifies as a non-NFA firearm. Complete with a U.S. made 16-inch barrel and folding stock, the firearm is not an exact replica, but is very close in appearance. The Century Arms Sterling is compatible with existing Sterling magazines, and other accessories.

Adams Arms

Adams Arms revealed an AR-15/M16 piston system at the 2008 SHOT show. For 2009, Adams Arms has a new 7.5-inch AR-15/M16 upper receiver utilizing the gas piston system. Fans of short barreled M16 rifles know that 7.5-inch upper receivers are finicky, and difficult to make run properly. The Adams Arms team reports that their 7.5-inch upper receiver works flawlessly. Retail price for the complete upper was not available as of press time.

Fabrique Nationale

FN has two new rifles that will excite SAR readers. The first new rifle is the FN-AR. Based upon the Browning BAR system, the FN-AR is a .308 caliber, semiautomatic rifle available in a light or heavy barreled configuration. Representatives from FN indicate that law enforcement officers requested a semiautomatic .308 rifle that would fit within a patrol vehicle. With a 20-inch barrel, the FN-AR delivers as requested. FN makes two guarantees of the FN-AR: a 10,000 round barrel life (compared to the 3,500 round barrel life of the Browning BAR) and guaranteed MOA accuracy. The FN-AR utilizes a proprietary 20-round magazine. According to FN representatives, original BAR magazines will not function with the new FN-AR rifle. The FN-AR rifle also uses the ambidextrous magazine release designed for the SCAR rifle system. Retail price for the FN-AR rifle is expected to be $1,399.

Close up of civilian legal FN SCAR rifle. Note the selector has provisions for Safe and Semi only. The production model of the civilian SCAR rifle will reportedly be identical to the military variant. (Jason Wong)

Scheduled for public release in mid-December 2008, look for the civilian legal SCAR light rifles from FN. Frequent readers of SAR know that the SCAR rifle system has been under development by FN for several years for the U.S. military. According to FN representatives, the civilian version of the SCAR rifle will be virtually identical to the military version. Two obvious changes to the civilian SCAR rifle include semiautomatic only function and an 18-inch barrel with standard A2-type birdcage flash hider. Suggested retail price as of press time is $2,499.

Civilian Legal SCAR Rifle, with 18-inch barrel.
Serbu Firearms Semiautomatic .50 BMG Rifle

The long anticipated Serbu semiautomatic rifle is reportedly in production. Featuring steel and aluminum construction, the rifle reportedly weighs 25 pounds making the Serbu rifle considerably lighter than many competing semiautomatic .50 caliber rifles. Overall length is reportedly 52.5 inches, with a 26-inch barrel. Utilizing a gas operated, three lug bolt with dual ejectors, the rifle uses standard M82 10-round magazines. Suggested retail is currently $6,700.

American Tactical Imports

Known for importing the GSG-5 carbine, look for the GSG-5 pistol to be on display at SHOT. Manufactured by German Sport Guns of Germany, the GSG-5 variants are near perfect replicas of the full scale 9mm Heckler and Koch versions. Look for a full review of the GSG-5 pistol in a future issue of Small Arms Review.

ATI is offering a dedicated .22 caliber M4 type AR-15/M16 upper receiver with a 16-inch barrel that utilizes Mad Dog .22 caliber magazines. Utilizing a modified bolt and recoil system based upon the Atchisson .22 LR system, the ATI upper receiver will reportedly retail for $300. Unlike other .22 caliber conversions, the ATI conversion utilizes a .22 caliber barrel and eliminates the .223 chamber spacer employed by caliber conversion kits. The kit is reportedly made and manufactured in Italy, and imported exclusively by ATI.

The firearms industry has recently seen many new modifications and caliber offerings in the AR-15 system. ATI has a new .410 caliber shotgun based upon the AR-15 design. Unlike the USAS-12 12-gauge shotgun, the T-14 shotgun is the same size as an AR-15, and makes use of the same fire control parts found on the AR-15. Equipped with a 10-round magazine, the T-14 has an MSRP of $799.

For Glock owners, ATI has secured newly manufactured after-market 15-round and 17-round 9mm Glock magazines. Identical in fit and finish to the original Glock 9mm magazines, a pair of magazines is sold with a magazine pouch for $39.99.

PTR-91, Inc.

PTR, long known for its Heckler and Koch type .308 rifles, has a new rifle available for the U.S. civilian market. The new G3 based rifle is chambered in 7.62×39. Designated the PTR-32, the rifle is available with a 16-inch barrel, Navy-type polymer trigger group, HK-type birdcage flash suppressor, and either a standard or collapsible stock. Most importantly, the rifle reportedly accepts AK-type 7.62mm magazines which are easy and inexpensive to obtain. Suggested retail is $1,240 for the standard stock model, and $1,355 for the collapsible stock model.

The SHOT show is the largest domestic firearm trade show of the year, and visitors can expect to find many new product releases during the show. Please bear in mind that while the information within this article was accurate as of press time, changes within the industry and political climate may result in changes to the final retail price, product offerings, and configurations.

DoubleStar Introduces New “Oval” AR Handguards

With its trademark oval shape, this two-piece four-rail handguard system should prove to be a favorite among smaller-handed shooters. However, those with large hands will also find the handguard easy to grip and maneuver. People with smaller hands feel like the round handguard systems on the market today don’t fit their hands very well. The new AR oval handguard just fits and feels better in your hand. The oval handguard is made of aircraft-grade 6061 T6 aluminum extruded to provide a lightweight advantage that still offers extreme strength. The mil-spec 1913 Picatinny rails will accept attachments from nearly every manufacturer, so pack on your sites, grips, scopes, lasers – whatever you need. The handguards’ snap-on installation has a spring pressure that forces it against the front handguard cap. The tight fit allows no side-to-side movement. DoubleStar started working on the oval AR handguard back in November after a group of law enforcement officers complained about the current market offerings. The handguard currently is available only in a carbine AR version, but a rifle model should be available soon. A free-float version is expected to be available later this year. For more information please contact DoubleStar, Dept. SAR, P.O. Box 130, Winchester, KY 40391. Phone: (859) 745-1757. Fax: (859) 745-4638. They can be found on the web at www.star15.com.

ATI now has the GSG-5PK Variation of the GSG-5 Rifle

American Tactical Imports, Inc., the world wide importer and exclusive overseas representative for several manufacturers of high quality shooting sports and law enforcement products, introduces the new GSG-5PK pistol model. The new GSG-5PK pistol is a .22 Long Rifle HV caliber with a barrel length of 4.52 inches with a total length of 15.275 inches and a total height of 10 inches. It weighs in at a dainty 5.2 pounds. It has an alloy frame construction and features a magazine safety and click-adjustable target sight. At a MSRP of $549.95, the GSG-5PK pistol is the perfect partner to the original GSG-5 rifle model. The GSG-5PK is a remake of the H&K MP5K-PDW (Personal Defense Weapon). The MP5K-PDW is a compact submachine gun designed for vehicle operators, air crew members, security details, and others who require a small but powerful weapon. While comparable in performance to the full size GSG-5, the size and weight of the GSG-5PK make this weapon the ideal choice when a rifle or full-sized submachine gun is unmanageable and a handgun is a poor compromise. Because the GSG-5PK is chambered in .22 cal., it is the ideal choice for plinking or training without the high cost of ammunition. American Tactical is the exclusive U.S. importer of the GSG – German Sports Guns. The GSG-5 is a world innovation, the first semiautomatic rifle in the legendary design of the MP5. There has not been a more sought after product to hit the market in the firearms industry than the GSG-5, and now with the introduction of the GSG-5PK, things just keep getting better and better. For more information contact American Tactical Imports, Dept. SAR, 100 Airpark Drive, Rochester, NY 14626. Phone: (800) 290-0065. Fax: (585) 328-4168.
New “Universal” Bullet Puller from Forster

Every reloader is eventually confronted with the problem of having to pull bullets from loaded cases either to correct an error or to modify a load using a different bullet or powder. Pulling bullets isn’t always as easy as it sounds, particularly when the only available bullet puller won’t fit the press or when the diameter of the loaded bullet won’t fit the puller. Forster Products now comes to the rescue. Their new Universal Bullet Puller fits not only Forster’s patented Co-Ax Press for which it was originally designed, but it will fit virtually any standard reloading press with a 7/8 x 14 inch thread. It makes pulling bullets much easier, quicker and safer than using a hammer style puller. To ensure true universal function, the Universal Bullet Puller uses diameter-specific Bullet Puller Collets to hold the bullet, which are available in twenty-one different sizes from .17 to .458. So, almost any caliber of bullet can be held securely by simply tightening the collet screw with a 9/16 inch wrench. Changing calibers is as simple as changing collets. Each Universal Bullet Puller is supplied with a modified version of Forster Products’ exclusive Cross Bolt Locking Ring which locks the puller securely into the Co-Ax press. Caliber-specific Bullet Puller Collets can be ordered separately. For more information or to place an order please contact them at Forster Products Inc., Dept. SAR, 310 East Lanark Avenue, Lanark, IL 61046. Phone: (815) 493-6360. Fax: (815) 493-2371.
Portable Tool Kit from SOG Knives

SOG Knives, maker of civilian, military, law enforcement and utility knives, debuts its latest high speed extreme power multi-tool. Thanks to SOG’s S.A.T. (SOG Assisted Technology) this is the only multi-tool in the world that features a one-hand power assisted opening system configured for two blades. Many times users in a working environment have only one hand available to operate a multi-tool. SOG has the solution. Once the blade is moved about 10-15 degrees by the user’s thumb the S.A.T. takes over and completes the opening. Now the user has two blades (one fully serrated for cutting cord and other slick surfaces and one with a conventional edge) to pick from (especially handy if the worker is wearing gloves). SOG’s PowerAssist features a unique robust internal gear drive system that multiplies the closing force of the pliers, cutter, and crimpers. Simply stated, it doubles the operator’s grip power. Finally, a handy sized robust utility tool that actually can do some serious work. Comfort plus robust construction: SOG’s PowerAssist multi-tool features a wide grip for comfort and incredibly tough industrial grade construction. The other tools and accessory blades lock safely and securely once opened. No more accidental closing yet one finger can easily release and close these accessory locks with light pressure thanks to SOG’s ingenious easy to use Piano-Lock blade locking system. The multi-tool market is extremely popular with consumers and professionals alike for their utility tool usefulness. This new SOG PowerAssist multi-tool comes armed with: combo pliers/wire cutter, utility blade, serrated utility blade, metal saw, can opener, flat and Phillips screw drivers, crimper tool, ruler, and handy V-cutter for line and industrial packing straps. The new tool weighs just 9.3 ounces and is only 4.6 inches long in the closed position. It comes in either stainless or black oxide over stainless finish. Retail prices of this new tool are $115 for stainless and $122 for the black oxide. You can contact them at SOG Specialty Knives & Tools Inc., Dept. SAR, 6525 212th Street Southwest, Lynnwood, WA 98036. Phone: (425) 771-6230. Fax: (425) 771-7689.
New Night Vision Monocular from NIVISYS Industries

NIVISYS Industries announces their military grade night-vision system is now available for public purchase. NIVISYS is a name new to many but they have been around for some time. NIVISYS makes an extensive line of ultra-quality military specification infrared, laser, and night vision systems for military and law enforcement. Due to NIVISYS’ advanced technology, these systems have been restricted to government use, require proof of U.S. citizenship, and restricted outside the U.S. unless State Department approved. Finally, NIVISYS has a system they can sell to civilians. It’s a Generation III unit designated MUM-14 (Multi-Use Monocular) that also meets all U.S. military specifications for combat use. The MUM-14 is a top level high-resolution piece of gear. The MUM-14 is ideal for security and covert work and is fun for any night recreational use or any situation where seeing what can’t be seen is desired. The MUM-14 is the smallest and toughest system available anywhere. It is designed for hand-held operation, helmet mount, head-mount, and firearm. As a head-mount unit, it affords users night vision while keeping their naked eye available for observation and/or gun-sight acquisition. For use even in total darkness it features a built-in infrared flashlight emitting light only visible through the MUM-14. The MUM-14 uses a single AA battery for 20-plus hours of use or a single CR-123 three-volt battery for 40-plus hours of operation. NIVISYS products are ruthlessly tested in altitude, heat, cold, water, and humidity chambers. NIVISYS is making the MUM-14 available in a special package containing the MUM-14, quick detachable Picatinny weapon mount and complete night-vision head-mount system with a retail of $3200. For more information they can be contacted at Nivisys Industries LLC, Dept. SAR, 400 South Clark Drive, Suite 105, Tempe, AZ 85281. Phone: (480) 970-3222. Fax: (480) 970-3555.
American Tactical Imports Introduces MP-5 Look-A-Like in .22

American Tactical is the exclusive U.S. importer of the GSG (German Sports Guns). The GSG-5 is a world innovation, the first semi-automatic small caliber rifle in the legendary design of the MP-5. The GSG-5 is a .22 Long Rifle High Velocity Caliber gun with an overall length of 26.7 inches. The rifle has a 22 round magazine capacity and weighs just 4.9 pounds. The gun features a shrouded barrel that resembles an MP-5SD. Other features include an ambidextrous safety/selector, adjustable sights, paddle magazine release and built-in “notches” for scope mounting. The gun combines the high-technology, reliability and appeal of the H&K MP-5 submachine gun series with the tactical accessories mount so popular these days. At a MSRP of $499.95, the GSG-5 is perfect for plinking, varmint or small game hunting. Watch for an in depth test on this new .22 in an upcoming issue of SAR.
Buffer Technologies Introduces New Buffer for SIG P229

Responding to demands from law enforcement professionals, Buffer Technologies recently introduced an addition to its extensive line of recoil buffers. The newest member of the buffer family is for the SIG P229. Like Buffer Technologies’ other SIG and Beretta buffers, the SIG P229 includes a new stainless steel guide rod with a high-density, shock-absorbing polyurethane buffer. The factory spring is retained. The stainless steel rod is a stronger, non-corrosive improvement over factory rods. Recoil buffers eliminate the metal-to-metal impact of the slide as it hits the frame. Over time, this continued force and impact can weaken the slide and jar internal workings of the gun, which can lead to cracks or potential malfunction. Law enforcement weapons can get heavy use, so the SIG line of buffers can help extend service life. The Buffer Technologies SIG P229 recoil buffer retails for $24.95 – a cost less than half that of many other after-market buffer products. The company also offers buffers to fit SIG 220 and 226 models, including the 9mm, .357SIG, .40 S&W and .45 ACP. Recoil buffers also are available for the Ruger 10/ 22, Ruger Mini-14/30, M1A/M14, FN/ FAL L1A1, SKS, HK G3/91 93, Model 1911 and clones, MAC-10/11 and all Kalashnikov-style weapons. For more information contact them at Buffer Technologies, Dept. SAR, P.O. Box 105047, Jefferson City, MO 65110. Phone: (573) 34-8520. Fax: (573) 634-8522.
Taurus Introduces Their New 800 Series Pistols

Derived from the company’s popular Taurus OSS model designed for U.S. Armed Forces, this new series of pistols boasts many new customer requested features including an added external hammer. The 800 Series, available in .45 ACP, .40 cal. and 9mm, features Taurus’ industry changing Strike Two capability. Firing normally from single action mode, if the primer ever fails to ignite, the gun reverts to double action mode to provide a potentially life-saving second or third try at a faulty cartridge. Research indicates an 88 percent or better chance the round will fire on re-strike. The pistol will then automatically revert back to single action mode. When field stripping the 800 Series, which is achieved quickly with unique take-down levers, users will be impressed with the firearm’s rugged construction including a forged slide and captured recoil spring with stainless steel guide rod. These components help create incredibly balanced spring pressure that allow for record-setting cycle times capable of firing ten rounds in under a second.

The series also features true ambidextrous magazine release buttons and extended magazine bumpers that double as a finger rest and helps prevent damage to the magazine when ejected in rapid-fire situations. Included with each firearm are three of Taurus’ exclusive magazines, which fit into guided wells for record-setting reload times. Each magazine is double stacked for hi-capacity and features witness holes for easy round count. The 800 Series offers ultimate exclusive protection with three internal safeties, unnoticed by the shooter when firing. True ambidextrous safety and decock lever allows the user to leave a live round in the chamber and safely decock or leave a round in the chamber and apply the safety with the left or right hand. The series also comes standard with a visual loaded chamber indicator and the unique Taurus Security System that allows users to securely lock the gun using an inconspicuous onboard key-lock. Each caliber is available in either blue or stainless steel. For more information please contact Taurus International Manufacturing, Inc., Dept. SAR, 16175 Northwest 49th Avenue, Miami, FL 33014.
GunTec USA Introduces New AR-15/M16 Armorers Wrench

A new combination Armorer’s Wrench for the AR-15/M16 series of rifles has just been introduced by GunTec USA. This new wrench combines many of the functions necessary for anyone building or repairing an AR-15 or M16 rifle. It is a two sided wrench. At one end, it attaches either multi-point or peg style barrel nuts on barrels up to 1 inch in diameter, and a torque wrench can fitted into the 1/2 inch square slot opening. This wrench also works well with installing free floating handguards. The other end fits CAR/M4 stock locking nuts, and a large flat head screwdriver blade is also included for use on full-size A2 buttstock screws.
Spikes Tactical Introduces Two New Products

Spikes Tactical has just introduced two new long awaited products. The first is their new STZ “HAVOC” 37mm flare launcher. This new launcher features the latest in design and manufacturing technology. Parts are CAD designed and CNC machined from solid billet material rather than the typical stamped and welded construction of other launchers. The 6061 T-6 aircraft grade aluminum components are anodized in a non-glare matte black finish for maximum durability and ease of maintenance. This color also matches most AR finishes perfectly. Additional components are built from 1018 cold rolled steel and plated with a mil-spec black oxide finish. The proprietary STZ push button cylindrical breech lock design is three times stronger than existing lever locking systems. The HAVOC is designed to mount on any rail system that is carbine length or longer. Installation simply requires sliding the launcher onto the bottom rail of the handguard and tightening two set-screws which are included. The HAVOC also features a one piece launcher tube and hand grip design for the ultimate in strength. The launcher has an extended tube opening which will accept even the 5 3/4 inch long cased USCG approved munitions. Retail price of this new launcher is just $299.

The other new product from Spikes is their SL-15 lower receivers for AR-15 rifles. These new receivers are fully machined from forged 7075 T-6 aircraft quality aluminum and have a very durable black anodized finish. What really sets these lowers off from others is that they can be ordered with pictogram bullet markings. They are available with just safe and fire markings or also with safe, fire and fullauto markings. Spikes also offers color filled markings for a very unique look. Specially marked lowers can also be ordered on a custom basis. The fit and finish on these lowers is first rate. For more information on these or the full line of other AR uppers, lowers and accessories, please contact then at Spikes Tactical, Dept. SAR, 2593 Clark Street, Suite 103, Apopka, FL 32703.
