Remington Upgrades M-24 Rifle with Leupold ER/T Scope

Remington’s latest upgrade of its Sniper Weapon System for the U.S. Army, the M-24E1, includes a new Leupold Mark 4 6.5-20x50mm Extended Range/Tactical (ER/T) M5 Locking Adjustment riflescope. Specially designed and built with the military sniper in mind, the scope has an auto-locking elevation adjustment. This feature ensures rock-solid reticle adjustment is maintained during rough going and stressful conditions on the battlefield. Other key features of the new ER/T include M5 windage and elevation adjustment dials with audible, tactile 1/10 (0.1) milliradian clicks to match the range-estimating, mil-based Horus reticle options. An elevation zero-stop helps prevent under-rotation in high-stress situations. With the battle-proven Horus H27 or H58 reticle in the front focal plane, the scope offers the versatility of a variable magnification optic and the ability to accurately range at all magnification settings (the reticle magnifies with the image). Leupold’s Xtended Twilight Lens System delivers an exceptionally clear, bright sight picture for outstanding target discrimination at all powers and in a wide range of lighting and environmental conditions. A lockable fast-focus eyepiece makes reticle focus simple to achieve and maintain. Other key features include side focus parallax adjustment for fast, easy parallax focusing from 75 yards to infinity, from any shooting position. The Mark 4 6.5-20x50mm ER/T M5 Locking Adjustment riflescope is waterproof, fog proof and shock proof. For more information contact either Remington Defense at www.remingtondefense.com or Leupold & Stevens at www.leupold.com.

New HK Super Long Low Profile Scope Mount from MFI

MFI has just introduced a new 14 inch long optics rail mount for the HK 91/G-3 series of weapons. The new mount was developed as a direct response to requests by the U.S. Military for a longer scope mount that will fit uniformly all HK 91/G-3 variants including the HK 21 (some modification may be required). In fact these new mounts are in the supply chains for all theaters of combat operations including Iraq and Afghanistan as well as law enforcement, SWAT teams and private military contractors throughout the world. This sleek design allows extended length for any of the HK guns in 7.62×51/.308 guns. There is plenty of room for a full size sniper scope and a PVS-22, which is slightly longer than the new PVS-24. Used in conjunction with MFI’s 30mm Tall Sniper rings or their 30mm Cantilever Scope Ring the new mount is a perfect match for the PVS-22 Night Vision height, which is also standard Mil-Spec height for all night vision optics that are to be used with and in front of regular daylight rifle scopes. Unlike competitors’ mounts, the new MFI mount takes less than 5 minutes to mount on the weapon. HK ejection port buffers or any device that rolls over the top of the gun’s receiver in the same location where the mount fits cannot be used along with the new mounts. The MFI Low Profile mount lies on the top of the receiver with near zero clearance. The mounts are made from 6061 T-6 aircraft grade aluminum with hardened steel legs and hooks. They are hard anodized flat black, weigh only 7 ounces and are 100% Picatinny/Mil-Spec 1913 correct. These low profile mounts are made so that they do not interfere with the iron sights when the scope is removed. The mounts are the real deal and made for live weapons. MFI now also has extended low profile mounts for the HK 33, HK 53 and the HK MP-5. For more information please contact them at MFI LLC, Dept. SAR, 2215 Via Dulcea, Fallbrook, CA 92028. Phone: (760) 728-7079. Their website is www.mfiap.com.

Arsenal, Inc. Introduces new 5 and 10-Round Magazines for AK Rifles

Introducing one of Arsenal, Inc.’s latest accomplishments, the 5 and 10-round 100% U.S, made magazines for 7.62×39 AK rifles. For the first time ever, there is a 100% U.S. made magazine with a steel lug insert. The solid steel lug allows for a precision fit and longevity for the magazine. Your magazine will not wear over time due to rubbing against the mag catch. The new double-stack magazine is perfect for all shooting enthusiasts who like to bench shoot or shoot from prone position. They are also great for those of you that live in a state that only allows lower capacity magazines. These magazines are made using the original Kalashnikov design. They are not reverse engineered and are made to the original specs. These are by far the highest quality, low profile magazines on the market today and pass the Russian Mil-Spec drop tests. The smooth body is made from the same high quality polymer and texture as the U.S. made furniture found on all Arsenal, Inc. firearms. The magazine will count as three (3) 922r compliance parts and is available in plum and black colors. The magazines come with a limited lifetime warranty. For more information or to place an order you can contact them at Arsenal, Inc., Dept. SAR, 3395 S. Jones Blvd. #331, Las Vegas, NV 89146. Phone: (702) 643-2703. Fax: (702) 307-2341.
Rudy Project Introduces New Tactical Eyewear

Rudy Project, long known for their sport line of eyewear, now has a line of tactical eyewear that is second to none. In case you haven’t heard of them they make the most technically cool eyewear there is. They have been used by athletes since 1985 and now they are making a line of tactical glasses and goggles that offer cutting edge eye protection as well as the most optically clear glasses that there are. They are also very good looking. The lenses used in the glasses are called Impacts and are made from the same material as Apache helicopter windshields. The material used in the lenses is stronger than any other lens material. It is stronger and 10% lighter than polycarbonate. The lenses are guaranteed unbreakable for life. They also have excellent resistance to abrasion and scratching. In fact, Rudy Project lenses are so scratch resistant that they are covered by a Replacement Lens Guarantee. They are so high tech that they have a Hydrophobic treatment that facilitates runoff of water droplets from the surface of the lens, maintaining vision free of typical distortion caused by wearing the glasses in a wet environment. The lens can be had in just about any color including several colors of Photochromic. The Photochromic lenses automatically darken within just a few seconds. Rudy Project glasses have very high tech frames as well. Some are made from plastic mixed with advanced carbon, others from advanced metal composites but all feature temple arms and nose pieces that are 360° adjustable, so you can literally shape the frame to your face. The frames fit comfortably under hearing protection even for extended periods. You can adjust the nosepiece so that the glasses fit either closer or farther from your face to control fogging. Rudy Project Tactical Eyewear features instantly changeable lens so the user can change colors to fit the requirement. All Rudy Project glasses can also be fitted with prescription lens. For more information on this outstanding eyewear you can contact them at Rudy Project North America, Dept. SAR, 3300 E. 17th Ave., Denver, CO 80206. Phone: (949) 272-2457. Fax: (949) 260-7851.
Pelican Deploys the 9440 Remote Area Lighting System

Pelican Products has announced that their Advanced Area Lighting Group has rolled out the 9440 Remote Area Lighting System (RALS), as an incredibly bright and extremely portable area light. The 9440 RALS features 10 next-generation LEDs and a beam spread of 120 degrees that effectively lights a large area. Additionally, it offers two brightness settings that shine 2,400 lumens for 3 hours in high-setting and 1,200 for 6 hours in low. The light is powered by the latest, maintenance-free, nickel metal hydride rechargeable battery. As a result, it runs silent and has no power cord which eliminates trip-hazards and emits no toxic fumes like bulky inefficient gasoline-powered lights. Setting up in seconds, and weighing in at a mere 16 lbs., the 9440 RALS is built with a streamlined, self-deploying tripod for easy site placement and a nylon shoulder strap for simple transport. The 9440 RALS also features a telescoping light tower which extends more than 7 feet and a light array that articulates 90 degrees. The 9440 RALS is available in either yellow or black and has an MSRP of $999.95. For more information you can contact Pelican Products Inc, Dept. SAR, 23215 Early Avenue, Torrance, CA 90505.

The SHOT Show is the world’s largest gathering of shooting, hunting and outdoor gear manufacturers. In fact the acronym SHOT stands for Shooting, Hunting and Outdoor Trade. Manufacturers display their wares for thousands of retailers, law enforcement, military and media types from all over the world. They also pick the SHOT Show to introduce their new products for the coming year. This year the show was located at the Sands Expo and Convention center in Las Vegas, Nevada. As the Venetian Hotel connects to the Sands Expo center there were booths in that hotel’s meeting rooms as well. The Sands/Venetian is probably not the best place for the show as this year it took two maps to try and find your way around. Even with the maps in hand, navigating the show was problematic at best. The show runs four days and even with that much time it is almost impossible to see everything. In covering this years show this author tried to uncover as many new products as possible, especially products that the readers of Small Arms Review would be interested in.

The Law Enforcement section of the show seems to grow tremendously every year. New products in the tactical and military field are driven by the need for them in places like Iraq, Afghanistan and mean streets the world over. Manufacturers of military and law enforcement firearms have been producing civilianized versions of the same firearms because of public demand either for self defense, sporting competition or simply collecting. If you don’t think that these guns are popular just take a look at the cover of any firearm related magazine. Small Arms Review has been known for covering these types of firearms since day one.

New firearms exhibited at the show always seen to create the biggest buzz. This year Bushmasters new rifle was probably talked about the most. The ACR (Adaptive Combat Rifle), which is a joint product of MagPul, Bushmaster and Remington Defense, has been in the works for several years. It is now finally scheduled for production, starting with the first Basic models in March and followed by the Enhanced version in May of this year. This rifle has several noted features that include a totally modular design with major components being able to be swapped out in seconds to include barrels of different lengths, stocks, forearms and even the trigger group. This piston drive rifle is adaptive for any situation with four different barrel lengths, two stock options and even different calibers. With the ability of changeable barrels and a bolt that is multi-caliber, the rifle can be switched from one caliber to another in minutes. The rifle will initially be available in 5.56 and 6.8 SPC. Other calibers will follow at a later date. The ACR is fully ambidextrous and accepts standard AR-15 magazines. (www.bushmaster.com)

LaRue Tactical introduced their new OBR Light 5.56 rifle. The new rifle will feature a MagPul CTR stock, MagPul Miad grip and 12 inch barrel with a SureFire flash hider. The OBR Light will use the same type of forearm rail system as the .308 OBR but overall weight of the 5.56 version will be right around 5 pounds. (www.laruetactical.com)

LWRC International was on hand with their full line of fine rifles. New this year is the R.E.P.R. (Rapid Engagement Precision Rifle), a short stroke piston driven 7.62mm that can be configured for a variety of roles. It can be used with a 12 inch barreled upper in an assaulter role or by switching to a 20 inch barreled upper it can be used as a sniper rifle. The theory here is that carrying another upper in a backpack is more convenient that carrying two rifles. The rifle has a side-mounted charging handle that enables the operator to reload without removing his eyes from the target. Also, with a side-mounted charging handle the rear of the upper receiver has no opening that might allow gas to be blown into the shooters face when the rifle is equipped with a sound suppressor. The R.E.P.R. will be available in four models: the standard with either a 12 or 16.1 inch barrel, the Designated Marksman with an 18 inch barrel or the Sniper with a 20 inch barrel. (www.lwrci.com)

The author fires the RONI from EMA Tactical at the Media Range Day on the day before the SHOT show opened. The RONI is a chassis into which a handgun can be installed to turn it into a short barreled carbine. Watch SAR for an in depth test and evaluation of this exciting product. (www.ematactical.com)

POF (Patriot Ordnance Factory) USA was on hand to introduce their new P-416 PDW. This gun is a 7 1/4 inch barreled piston driven .223 rifle that weighs right at 6 lbs. This tiny gun is just over 20 inches long with the stock collapsed. The gun features the MMR (Modular Railed Receiver), a free float barrel and a 3/4 inch shorter buffer system. Also new for POF this year is their new 25-round .308 magazines that will fit not only their P-417 series guns but also the Remington, DPMS, LWRC and the SR-25 rifles. Another new product from them this year is their Roller Cam Pin kit. This kit contains a new cam pin with a rolling head, a modified bolt carrier key which allows the new cam pin to be removed without removing the carrier key and new screws as well. The complete kit will retail for just $45. (www.pof-usa.com)

FNH USA chose the SHOT Show to introduce several new firearms as well as a couple of new less than lethal guns. The gun that drew the most attention was their new semi-auto version of the SCAR Heavy designated the SCAR 17S. Following last years introduction of the SCAR 16S that is the civilian version of the .223 Special Operations Combat Assault Rifle, the SCAR 17S is the .308 version. This piston driven rifle is totally ambidextrous with a magazine release and fire controls on both sides as well as a reversible charging handle. The SCAR 17S also has a folding, collapsible stock with a 2-position cheekpiece that allows the shooter’s eye to be aligned higher for optics or lower for iron sights. The gun can also be fired with the stock folded. Also new this year was FNH’s series of handguns called the FNX. The FNX is available in either 9mm or .40 S&W. The pistols feature either double or single action and have a decocking lever that allows the pistol to be carried either cocked and locked or hammer down in the decocked mode. A modular grip is another feature of the FNX and comes with several backstraps with different checkering and different profiles to fit just about any size hand. These new pistols were designed with a different grip angle and position so that the bore sits lower in the hand thus producing less recoil and reduced muzzle flip.
Smith and Wesson has supplied duty weapons in the form of handguns for just about as long as anybody can remember. In recent years they have enhanced their line of law enforcement firearms with the M&P 15 series of rifles. The M&P logo designates Military and Police. This year they expanded the M&P 15 line with several new versions of this rifle. The first will be equipped with the MagPul MOE stock, MOE grip, MagPul P-Mag, MagPul folding sights and the Troy Industries TRX Extreme rail forearm. The new rail is very thin and light and only comes with a top Picatinny rail. There are mounting points located in various positions along the forearm to add rails. This allows the shooter to place rails just where they are needed and still have a smooth forearm gripping surface without the need for rail covers. This gun is equipped with a 14.5 inch barrel with a permanently attached muzzle brake to bring it to legal length. Another new model of the M&P 15 is their new piston driven rifle which will be available with either a standard M4 forearm or a railed forearm. The new rifle uses the excellent Adams Arms piston conversion that has a railed gas block. Adams Arms has a proven design that is well made and works every time. Smith & Wesson has also updated the M&P 15-22 that was introduced last year and is their entry into the .22 LR black rifle market. It features polymer upper and lower receivers and a full sized .22 LR magazine that makes the gun look just like its full-sized counterpart. The new model of the M&P 15-22 now has a railed forearm, MagPul stock and pistol grip and now also a threaded muzzle that will accept different muzzle devices as well as a suppressor. The M&P 15-22 has had rave reviews and now this upgraded model is bound to be a winner as well. (www.smith-wesson.com)

Several companies picked the show to break the news of their new .22 rimfire guns. Among them, Umarex USA will be bringing to market a new line of Heckler & Koch licensed .22’s. These will include semi-auto rimfire copies of the H&K 416 battle rifle and the H&K MP-5 submachine gun. Two versions of both will be available. There will be a standard MP-5 with a dummy suppressor shroud that will cover its 16 inch barrel and also a model with what appears to be an MP-5 SD with an integral dummy suppressor covering its long barrel. As far as the 416 goes, it will be produced in a standard rifle configuration as well as a pistol version with a dummy suppressor. Both models are sure to be hot sellers.
Barrett Firearms announced their newest heavy hitter. They are now producing their Model 82 A1 in .416 Barrett caliber. Their original Model 82 A1, in .50 BMG, has become feared the world over as the shoulder fired cannon that can reach out and touch someone or something at extraordinary ranges. Now this same platform will be produced in their latest caliber. This .416 caliber alternative further adds to the mystic of the Model 82 A1. With enhanced accuracy and stability, not to mention a significantly higher muzzle velocity, the .416 offers extreme long range accuracy. Like the original M82 A1 this rifle comes with a 29-inch chrome-lined barrel, carry handle, optics rail, flip-up iron sights, detachable bipod and cleaning kit all in a fitted Pelican case. If you want a heavy caliber rifle but live in a state that doesn’t allow it, this is your rifle.
New accessories abound at the SHOT Show and many retailers visit the show for just that purpose to have the newest and neatest accessories that the industry has to offer. With over 1,800 exhibitors plying for the business, most dealers will run out of money before they run out of things to stock up on.

Ashbury International Group manufactures high end rifles that offer extreme accuracy for any mission.
Suppressors have become big business with the tactical market expanding the way that it has. A relatively new suppressor company called Silencerco was there explaining the merits of their new suppressors. Classified as their Osprey line, the new handgun suppressors utilize a revolutionary eccentric design which means that the internal bore of the suppressor does not run exactly through the center of the outer tube but instead runs through the top of the tube. This allows for a slimmer, flat sided suppressor tube that still has the internal volume of a round tube. Because of its slimmer form it can be holstered while still attached to the host firearm. Another feature of these suppressors is a Nielsen device that is integrated with a cam-lock mounting system. Interchangeable pistons in the locking system allow one suppressor to be used with multiple host weapons. With an eccentric design these new suppressors allow an unobstructed sight picture without having to use extremely tall sights. They also offer safe hearing protection without the use of water or grease. The Osprey suppressors are available in 9mm, .40 S&W and .45 ACP. (www.silencerco.com)

For the military and law enforcement community was this full-auto 30mm grenade launcher from Heckler & Koch. This gun can be carried in a backpack configuration by a two man team or mounted on a vehicle or helicopter.
Gemtech has long been known for their line of fine suppressors and this year they have added some new 100% titanium suppressors. These new suppressors still provide the optimum sound suppression but with the substantial weight reduction and strength of titanium. These include the PSR (Precision Sniper Rifle) in .338 Lapua, the QUICKSAND in 7.62 NATO, the G5-Ti in caliber 5.56mm and the TREK in 5.56mm. Also new for 2010 is their G5-22, a .22 LR suppressor that has been designed to be correctly proportioned for the .22 caliber full-sized copies of famous assault rifles. It looks just like their 5.56mm G5 but made for .22 rimfire. It can be 100% user disassembled and has zero first round pop. They also have now introduced their new ALPINE .22 LR suppressor. This suppressor was designed for shooters who wanted a suppressor for their .22 rifles and pistols that could be taken apart. The only tool needed for disassembly is a U.S. coin. Gemtech is also now providing suppressors in Realtree and Desert Digital camouflage. (www.gem-tech.com)

Leatherman introduced one of the neatest accessories for all of the AR shooters out there. It is a new multi-tool called the MUT that functions as both a tactical as well as a practical tool for military, law enforcement and civilian shooters. It comes in either a utility model or the EOD model. The utility model has 18 tools plus a 3 piece bit kit and the EDO model is equipped with 17 tools as well as the 3 piece bit kit. The MUT has several tools specially designed for servicing the AR-15/M16 rifle. There is a bolt override tool, a firing pin removal tool, a takedown and retaining pin removal tool, a bronze bolt carrier carbon removing tool, cleaning rod brush attachments and optic mounting and adjustment tools. Both tools feature a removable pocket clip and a MOLLE Sheath. Everyone that owns an AR-15 or M16 needs to have one of these. (www.leatherman.com)

Midwest Industries introduced their new Browning M2/M3 Optics Mount this year. (www.midwestindustriesinc.com)

Optics have not been left behind when it comes to the tactical arena and several of the major players have introduced “Tactical” lines of their scopes. This year Leopold brought out their new Tactical Optics line. This new line features the newest Mark 4 ER/T riflescopes. Leupold’s Mark 4 Extended Range/Tactical M1 Front Focal riflescopes are designed to let you take advantage of the reach and power of today’s long-range hunting, target and tactical rifles. At 20x or even 25x, you’ll have the superior clarity needed to positively ID targets, and the generous range of windage and elevation adjustment that gives you the accuracy and precision that you need at the most extreme distances. They also now have a full line of tactical mounts and bases so that mounting these new optics to any rifle is not a problem. (www.leupold.com)

All in all, this years SHOT Show proved to have just about anything that anyone in the industry would have an interest in. This article in no way covers every new item that was represented there. It would take hundreds of pages to cover them all. Just be sure to watch future issues of Small Arms Review as we cover a host of new and interesting products from the shooting industry.

Text & Photos by Jeff W. Zimba

Arsenal, Inc. has been well chronicled in the pages of Small Arms Review for almost six years reviewing their latest developments, including their long company history and their role today in building and importing the only original Bulgarian AK47 variants in the USA. With a product line that continues to grow at an amazing pace, their latest offering is certainly a configuration that will please many.

As we have been following and testing these new rifles as they were introduced, we began with the SLR 105 series chambered in 5.45x39mm. The next variant introduced was the SLR 106 series chambered in 5.56x45mm offered in three versions, and catering to those who prefer the Short Barreled Rifle (SBR) configuration. The latest rifle introduced, and the subject of this article, is the SLR 107CR. The 107 series is chambered in the more traditional and extremely popular 7.62x39mm cartridge.

Arsenal, Inc. by the Numbers and Letters

The three model numbers most recently tested by SAR coincide with the caliber of the firearm. The easiest to understand is the standard prefix used in all model numbers. The letters “SLR” simply signify Self Loading Rifle. The suffix (the letters that follow those model numbers) also signify something very important, mainly the barrel length and configuration. The 3 most common current configurations are the “F”, the “C” and the “U”. The “F” model is a standard, full-length configuration with a traditional 16.25-inch barrel. The “C” model, while utilizing a full-length gas system and standard handguards, incorporates the gas block into the front sight with standard Bulgarian 24mm threads directly in front of the sight. These come standard with a removable 24mm muzzle attachment allowing the 16.25-inch barrel to easily be cut down to 12.5 inches and still utilize all factory accessories if the end user desires a registered Short Barreled Rifle. The “U” model has a shorter “Krink-Style” gas system located directly in front of the much shorter handguards. A shortened front sight block necessitates a front sight that also doubles as a hinge on the top-cover. Although it is shipped with a 16.25-inch barrel, the front sight and 24mm threads are placed in a location allowing the user to easily cut the barrel at 8.5 inches if a registered Short Barreled Rifle is desired. Just like the C model, all factory 24mm accessories can be accepted after shortening the barrel. In all of these models, the letter “R” added in the model suffix designate a factory scope rail mounted on the left side of the receiver. Since the model designations have been explained, it is easy to tell that the test rifle at hand, the SLR 107CR is a 7.62×39 rifle, complete with scope mount and a 16.25-inch barrel, that can be easily registered and modified to a 12.5-inch barreled rifle.

Business at Hand

Since the first of the SLR rifle tests, many have asked the manufacturer when a 7.62×39 caliber variant would be available in some or all of the new configurations. Arsenal has responded with a real Bulgarian SBR variant in the correct caliber for a traditional AK47 series rifle. The rifles are available, in stock and shipping, and the MSRP on the SLR 107CR is $979.

In its factory configuration, the overall length of the SLR 107CR is 34.5 inches with the stock extended and 25.25 inches with the stock folded. The location and design of the gas block/front sight combined with the lengthened muzzle brake give the illusion of a much shorter rifle, even with the 16.25-inch barrel.

The trigger mechanism is the same 2-stage trigger used in the later SLR rifles. It is a fairly smooth trigger in its length of pull during the first stage, and leaves no doubt when the second stage is engaged. From that point on, the travel is extremely short and the pull is in the 5 to 7 pound range to break.

The furniture is the same US made, high-quality black plastic as used on the previous 105 and 106 series of rifles. The left-side folding stock reduces overall length and locks tightly against the receiver. Since the stock folds to the left side instead of the right side, the gun is fully functional with the stock in either position. A slight inset in the stock accommodates the scope mount on the left side of the receiver.

The metal is phosphate treated and finished with a black baked-on paint like the standard finish used on all Bulgarian commercial production rifles.

At the Range

Having a short window to get the testing done before article submission, we were forced to shoot during some weather conditions where many would have chosen not to venture out. Our facility in the North East is in Maine and due to an unusually heavy snowfall, most of the regular ranges were closed so we were not able to do any bench-style shooting for accuracy. At 11 degrees above zero during a snowstorm, accuracy testing doesn’t always work that great anyway. Fortunately, there is a local shooting spot that one of our subscribers is kind enough to open occasionally during the winter so we are never without a place to shoot.

Testing this day consisted of function testing and muzzle velocity testing. While there, we did engage in a little off-hand shooting at some 50-yard targets and were quite impressed with the performance, especially under all the adverse conditions. Ammo utilized consisted of Wolf 7.62x39mm 122-grain FMJ. The magazines were of the original 30-round Bulgarian (Circle 10) variety. This combination never skipped a beat and the only time a “click” could be heard upon squeezing the trigger was when the magazine was empty.

The consistency of the ammo and rifle combination was extremely impressive. With an extreme spread of only 52 feet per second (fps), the average muzzle velocity at a distance of 8 feet from the muzzle was 2,224.7 fps. Muzzle flash was not apparent even with the lack of an actual flash hider. The sky was dark on this stormy day and had there been an abundance of flash it would have been quite obvious.

Conclusion

The SLR 107 is the series of original Bulgarian rifles that many people in the recreational shooting community have been waiting for. Chambered in the familiar 7.62x39mm round, accessories and ammunition are plentiful and (except for the recent increase in ammo), usually affordable. Magazines for some of the less common AK variant calibers can be frustrating to find, but magazines for 7.62x39mm are available in several styles, types and of varying capacities. For some people, an AK just isn’t an AK unless it is in this caliber. Arsenal, Inc. saw the flood of interest and reciprocated by bringing them to the market. Another important niche in the custom AK market has been addressed with the introduction of the SLR 107CR and we are happy to see that the 107UR was introduced early in the planning to complete the entire line. For this, the recreational AK collector and military-style firearms enthusiast (especially those who enjoy registered SBRs) will be thankful for these latest offerings.

This package not only offers a unique look, but it demonstrates a high level of functionality as shipped from the manufacturer. Giving the illusion of an actual Short Barreled Rifle, the 16-inch barreled factory rifle is actually less than 2 inches longer than a registered SBR when fitted with the popular 4-piece “Krink” style flash hider. Some will want to register the rifle as a real SBR and delete the additional barrel length, but many people will also choose to leave the rifle a Title I firearm, as shipped, and enjoy the performance and style as it is, without incurring the additional Title II manufacturing fee or transfer tax.

The test rifle functioned and looked great, which has proven to be common of anything manufactured by Arsenal, Inc. Not a single round failed to feed, fire, extract or eject and the muzzle velocity was extremely consistent showing a good rifle/ammo relationship. A scope mount will be ordered prior to any further testing and a CQB style sight will be added to this rifle to complete it. The finish is the typical Bulgarian commercial baked-on, black paint, and is extremely durable with a deep and even amount of coverage.

The Arsenal SLR 107CR should make a welcomed addition to the family of any serious AK collector. This writer is pleased to recommend the 107CR without any hesitation at all. It has the ability to function in several roles from professional to recreational. Based on this early testing, combined with that of another identical model previously purchased by a friend in the Law Enforcement community, it should fill any role it is given as a task.
Arsenal Inc., located in Las Vegas, Nevada, has become a benchmark for quality manufactured AK variant firearms. Their rich company background and their historic involvement in the firearms industry over the past 127 years was chronicled on the pages of Small Arms Review in the November, 2002 Issue (Vol. 6 No. 6). Since that article was published, Arsenal, Inc. has introduced several new variants to their lineup; and the expiration of the 1994 Clinton Assault Weapon Ban has opened the doors to even more desirable designs.

The SLR-105 rifle is a gas operated, magazine fed, semiautomatic rifle, utilizing the long stroke gas system designed by Mikhail Kalashnikov. The SLR-105 A1 R rifle represents the first time a real AK-74 rifle made on original Bulgarian tooling has been offered for sale in the United States. Chambered in the desirable 5.45x39mm round, it is now available with a stamped receiver, AK-74 front sight block, bayonet lug, standard and original 24mm muzzle brake, a NATO buttstock and side-mounted scope rail. These rifles are manufactured in Bulgaria and they are modified in the United States to be compliant with 922 (r). Given the number of American made parts utilized, the rifles are actually considered to be “Made in USA” for purposes of this law.

The SLR-105 A1 R Rifle is the first authentic example of the Bulgarian AK-74 to be available in the United States.

With the traditional quality we have come to expect from Arsenal, Inc., this latest offering is again a leader in craftsmanship, fit and finish.

The NATO buttstock measures 10.5 inches in length and includes a sling swivel on the left side of the stock in the traditional AK-74 fashion. The stock has a spring-loaded trap door in the rear to accommodate a standard cleaning kit. All furniture on the SLR-105, including the stock, pistol grip and upper and lower handguards are black, synthetic material.

There are currently 7 major parts made in the USA that count towards compliance of 922 (r), allowing the sale and possession of the original, un-importable configuration. These USA manufactured parts include the stock, pistol grip, upper handguard, lower handguard, trigger, hammer and disconnector. Arsenal has just released a new disconnector that totally eliminates any sensation of “trigger slap” common in many AK variants. Arsenal will also soon have a new fire control group available allowing the operator to have a double stage trigger in conjunction with the new disconnector. The trigger in the rifle supplied to Small Arms Review was extremely smooth with no feeling of creep. It would break clean every time with the slightest amount of rearward pressure with no excessive travel nor noticeable feeling of “trigger slap.”

On the left, 30 rounds of 7.62x39mm with an AK-47 magazine. On the right, 30 rounds of 5.45x39mm with the AK-74 magazine. The shape of the cartridge dictates the curvature of the magazine necessary for proper feeding.

As in all their rifles, where available, the suffix designation “R” signifies the addition of a left-side, receiver-mounted scope-mounting rail. This Bulgarian side rail mount can be used with any standard mount for this receiver including the K-VAR KV-04 optimized AK scope mount. These mounts are sturdy and are attached to the side of the receiver for much greater stability than any of the aftermarket mounts that attach to the detachable top covers.

To clear up some possible confusion, earlier Arsenal firearms with the side mounted scope rail had the designation “S”. The designation “S” was typically used in Bulgarian rifles to signify the use of a folding stock. Now, and in the future, the designation “R” will be used to signify the addition of the scope rail and the correct designation “S” will be used for any future rifles that may be offered in the configuration of a folding stock.

The rear sight is a standard Kalashnikov style sight, field adjustable for elevation in 100-meter increments, from 100 meters to 1,000 meters. The front sight is a protected post, also adjustable for elevation with the use of the supplied combination tool. When test firing the rifle for the first time, if any elevation adjustments are necessary, they should be made by adjusting the front post to match the distance markings on the rear sight. This will allow the shooter to make quick and accurate range adjustments while in the field without the necessity of any additional tools. Windage adjustment is set at the factory and the SLR-105 should not need further windage adjustment.

The muzzle is finished with a right-hand, 24mm thread, which is standard for many Russian, Bulgarian and West German guns in this family of firearms. There are several flash hiders and muzzle brakes that are manufactured for this thread giving the end user several choices of accessories.

Range Performance

The SLR-105 lived up to the author’s expectations at the range. Having past range time with some of Arsenal, Inc.’s other offerings, these expectations were already elevated. The first thing the shooter will notice is the comfort of the NATO stock. Measuring at an additional 1-1/4 inches longer than the standard stock on the authors Maadi 7.62x39mm AK series rifle, the extra length was immediately recognizable. The cheek weld is a little more natural and the extra length keeps the shooter from crowding the receiver. As mentioned earlier, the trigger was extremely smooth, especially when compared to a standard, unmodified AK variant. The recoil was quite light in comparison to the 7.62x39mm cartridge, making follow-up shots a little faster. The author was able to shoot an off-hand, 19-shot, rapid-fire group at 50 yards that measured under 6 inches. A disciplined shooter with a steady rest should be able to expect excellent groups with the SLR-105 rifle.

This rail will accept the standard KV-04 mount supplied by K-Var.

The 5.45x39mm Cartridge

The 5.45x39mm round, designated the M74 cartridge, was developed in response to the US 5.56x45mm (.223 Rem) round. Currently, the majority of the AK style rifles are chambered in 7.62x39mm, the M43 cartridge, developed and utilized by the Soviet Union during the Second World War. The 7.62x39mm round remains the most popular and common ammunition for this family of firearms worldwide. The M74 cartridge and an entire new family of firearms started to replace the M43 system in the Soviet Union in the 1970s and started making appearances in many of the countries surrounding Soviet Union in the late 1980s. The attraction of this new round was the seemingly lighter recoil and increased accuracy. Ammunition utilized for this testing pf the SLR-105 consisted of WOLF, 60-grain, 5.45x39mm FMJ. For comparative purposes we used WOLF 122-grain, 7.62x39mm FMJ ammo in the Maadi variant. The following ammunition specifications were provided by the manufacturer and include their 62-grain .223 Remington FMJ specifications for comparison.
