The new rifle that just arrived was a combination of the latest high tech materials and design elements. Its full length Picatinny rail was topped with one of the newest sights on the market; the Aimpoint Mark 4. It also incorporated front and rear folding back-up iron sights, a folding, collapsible buttstock and a vertical foregrip mounted on a bottom rail. It was “camoed” in two different colors of tan to help break up its futuristic form. The Aimpoint’s red dot was settled on the chest of the camouflaged form quietly moving through the dry brush just ahead. He took a few more steps and then paused at an exposed spot in the terrain. The selector switch was moved to the full-auto position and the trigger squeezed. The rifle made a slight whining noise and “bullets” literally seemed to pour from the barrel. The man flinched as the rounds impacted, but then stood and said, “I’m out!!”

This scenario didn’t happen in some far away war zone, it happened here at home in what’s known as an airsoft skirmish. The rifle is actually an exact copy of a gun made by FN (Fabrique Nationale) and the official designation is the FN SCAR Light. The term SCAR stands for Special Operations Forces Combat Assault Rifle. The Light designation was given to the 5.56x45mm (.223) caliber rifle whereas FN also has a Heavy Model which is chambered in 7.62.x51mm (.308). The particular gun that is the subject of this article is called the CA SCAR Light. The “CA” stands for Classic Army, a Hong Kong based company that is the gun’s manufacturer. In fact, most of today’s airsoft guns come from China, Taiwan or Japan. The Classic Army brand is exclusively imported and distributed in the U.S. by Spartan Imports of California. Spartan carries a vast assortment of guns and accessories.

The gun is what’s known as an AEG, or Airsoft Electric Gun. Airsoft guns are nothing new, having been around for several decades. The guns of today basically have only one thing in common with the guns of the past; the ammunition they use. Airsoft guns fire 6mm plastic BBs. They are propelled by air which is generated by an electric motor that in turn drives a piston inside an air chamber. This is all done very rapidly and the cyclic rate of airsoft guns replicate their real counterparts. They have selector switches and do fire either full or semi-auto. Velocity of the fired BBs vary but run anywhere from 250 to 450 feet per second. Upgraded parts are available to boost velocity for almost any gun. Today’s guns are exact replicas of the real firearms that they copy sometimes right down to the manufacturers’ trademark markings. Since they are one-to-one copies, a lot of the accessories that are made for real guns will also fit on the airsoft models and, in some cases, this is also true vice versa.

The CA SCAR Light is one of the newest airsoft models to hit the market and it is a real beauty. Overall, the new gun has three distinct colors of desert camouflage on its surface just like the real SCAR rifle. The buttstock and lower receiver are desert tan, the upper receiver, pistol grip and magazine appear to be flat dark earth and the barrel, buttpad, iron sights, fire control parts and bottom and side Picatinny rails are black. When you pick up the CA SCAR Light the first thing that you notice is that the gun is not light; having some heft to it, and weighs the same as the real rifle at 3.5 kg (7.72 lbs.). This is due in part to the entire upper receiver being CNC machined out of aluminum. The upper receiver also has a full length Picatinny rail machined into it along the top. Rail slot positions are laser etched with numerals to make it easy to replace sights or optics in the same position. The gun also features machined metal Picatinny rails located on the forearm at the 3, 6 and 9 o’clock positions. They are removable and are held in place with machined Allen screws.

The buttstock on these guns is a marvel. It is not only collapsible but also folds to the right side and locks into place on a projection just behind the ejection port. On the real gun this projection also doubles as an ejection port buffer. On the top of the stock is a 2-position cheekpiece. By pressing a button on the gun’s right side the cheekpiece can be raised to an elevated position and locked there, which allows for the perfect cheek weld for higher mounted optics. The stock’s rubber buttpad can also be removed to reveal a small compartment for parts, tools or spare optic batteries. The stock also contains the gun’s battery compartment. The gun uses what looks like a standard M16 A2 pistol grip that houses the electric motor that powers the gun. Above the grip is the ambidextrous selector switch. It has three positions safe (marked with the letter “S”), semi (marked with the numeral “1”) and autolower receiver, stock and grip are all made from fiber reinforced polymer.

The real SCAR uses standard M16 magazines and the airsoft version also uses any M-16-style airsoft magazine. The mag that comes with the gun is another small marvel. It is metal just like an original M16 magazine and concealed inside is a winding mechanism and a hopper that holds 300 of the 6mm BBs. These are loaded through a small sliding door located on the top. Once the BBs are poured into the hopper, the magazine is wound up by turning a small wheel that protrudes out the magazine’s bottom. A few turns of this wheel and the magazine is ready to fire. Load the magazine in the magazine well and the gun is ready. There is no need to cycle the charging handle, though the charging handle functions and is spring loaded to return to the forward position but doesn’t actually load the gun. When the charging handle is pulled to the rear it exposes a rotary dial. Turning the dial activates the “Hop-Up” mechanism. What this does is impart variable “back-spin” on the BBs as they travel down the barrel. The more you turn the dial the more spin is imparted. This backspin causes the BBs to fly more accurately as well as farther. This “Hop-Up” can also be adjusted for different weight BBs.

Magazines are changed just like on real rifles by pressing the ambidextrous magazine release. The magazine will not fire all 300 BBs without winding it. You seem to get about 150 rounds before it needs rewinding. Cyclic rate of the gun is right at 800 rounds per minute.

The gun uses a rechargeable, mini-type, 8.4 volt battery for power and is concealed inside the rifle’s buttstock. The stock is made so that a slightly larger 9.6 volt battery will fit as well. This larger battery ups the cyclic rate to around 1,000 rpm but caution should be used here as the higher rate of fire can wreck the rifle without a few other internal upgrades.Battery life is several magazines and it can be recharged in about 15 minutes with a fast charger. The rifle uses a quick disconnect plug so batteries can be changed in minutes to provide extended shooting time. The battery and charger are not included with the gun and must be bought separately.

6mm airsoft BBs come in weights from 12 grams all the way up to 30 grams. The 20 gram BB seems to be what most AEGs are designed around. This weight produces the best combination of high velocity and punch. A word of caution here: do not use the cheap discount store variety BBs in these guns. Spend a little extra and buy precision BBs. Precision BBs are just that – they are precision made and are of a consistent weight, diameter and are highly polished. They run smoothly in high grade AEGs and will not cause jamming or breakage of internal parts. These BBs are available on the internet or in local specialty shops and are well worth the slight increase in price. Just as in real firearms, if you use junk ammo you will have problems. Precision BBs cost around $12 for a 3,700 count bag of 20 grams so you can shoot all day for very little money. Remember these are made from high density plastic. Velocity of this gun was right at 340 fps with 20 gram BBs. They will not break glass or put dents in most metal (they will penetrate aluminum cans) but they will shoot through cardboard boxes as well as leave a nasty welt on your skin. They could also put an eye out; so as with any firearm don’t point it at anything you don’t intend to shoot. Also remember to be aware of potential ricochets as most shooting with these guns is done at less than 100 feet. Up to this range they are very accurate. The gun tested would shoot groups under 1 inch from a rest at 50 feet. At the same distance on full-auto it would shoot as many BBs as you wanted to shoot into about 2 inches. They seemto shoot forever and are very accurate even with open sights. The sights are click adjustable and very well made.

Simply put, these guns are a blast. They are well made and look just like the real thing. They accept all kinds of accessories, so there is no end to what you can add to them. The airsoft industry has definitely changed in the last few years and now includes just about any handgun, assault rifle, and sniper rifle you can imagine. There are also belt-fed M249 SAWs, M-60s in all variants and even an airsoft copy of the GE Minigun. It is 12 volt powered and shoots BBs by the pound. Also available in airsoft are hand grenades, 40mm grenade launchers with BB grenades, LAWs rockets and even Claymore mines that are bound to put a little excitement into a weekend wargame. Some of these are powered by CO2 and others are spring powered. These guns aren’t cheap but they are a lot cheaper than the real thing. The CA SCAR Light retails for $370 without the battery and charger. By the time you read this there will also be another version of the SCAR rifle on the market. It will be the SCAR CQC, close quarter combat version with a short barrel and will be available in tan or all black. If you can’t afford the real full-auto gun, or maybe you live in a state that prohibits ownership of them, try out an airsoft version. They are also great for pest control in your backyard without the use of deadly force. These guns are a lot of fun and the 6mm ammo is the cheapest thing you can shoot at today’s ammo prices. It would make a great birthday or Christmas present too.

Aimpoint T-1 QD Mount from GG&G

The new Aimpoint Micro T-1 is a great lightweight tactical scope, but the scope design does not accommodate flip-up lens covers. It comes with bikini lens covers that are not easy to remove, keep in place or reinstall and are easily lost. GG&G has now come up with a solution that is so unique, it has a patent pending. That solution is an Accucam Quick Detach T-1 Mount that includes a built-in provision that provides for the installation of a flip-up lens cover for the ocular end. Additionally, the kit includes a specially prepared flip-up cover that fits the objective lens. The Aimpoint T-1 easily and solidly installs onto the GG&G Accucam QD mount with four 3mm screws. Magpul Introduces New Polymer PMAG

The Magpul Polymer Magazine (PMAG) fits the M16 series and other 5.56×45 NATO compatible weapons. SHELL SHOCK’S REVOLUTIONARY 9-MM NAS3 CASES AND RELOADING TOOLS NOW AVAILABLE

Reloaders may find that NAS3 cases also require less crimping than conventional brass cases. Unlike conventional brass cases, NAS3 cases were designed to enable the highest possible number of reloads. Conventional reloading tools are not suitable for use with NAS3 cases. NEW KOOL HAND SUPPRESSOR COVERS

When shooting suppressors on rifles, especially long range precision rifles, most shooters want to install a thermal suppressor cover. These covers offer hand and rifle case protection from extremely hot suppressors. But in the long range precision game the suppressor does more than offer protection. If you are a long time gun enthusiast, as this author is, you have probably owned a virtual gamut of various types and calibers of firearms. I started out owning a .22 rifle, followed by bolt-action centerfire rifles, progressing through all sorts of semi-auto handguns and rifles, then moving on into the Class III realm of submachine guns and heavy machine guns. It seems like the pinnacle of firearms ownership is a full-auto firearm and then on past that is a belt-fed full-auto. In years past if you owned a select-fire weapon whether it be magazine or belt-fed, if you could afford the gun, the price of ammunition needed to feed it should be no problem. At today’s ammunition prices feeding “the beast” is a very expensive proposition. This has made owning a belt-fed gun (either semi or select-fire) out of the range of most shooters. Things have now changed dramatically with the introduction of a new accessory for the AR-15/M-16 series of weapons called the FM-9 from Freedom Ordnance.

The unit comes complete with everything you need to change either one of these guns into a belt-fed!! It also allows the shooter to be able to actually go out and shoot it regularly without breaking the bank because this new unit is chambered in 9mm! That’s right. It is a drop-in, no gunsmithing unit that allows your mil-spec AR or M-16 to fire disintegrating metal-linked 9x19mm ammunition. With some 9mm ammunition priced at or slightly below the $200.00 per 1000 round price, this is a unit that you can afford to go have fun with. Not only that, the entire unit sells for about the price of a high quality AR style gun. More on that later.

The Freedom Ordnance FM-9 started life as an idea, a 3-D printer and a Tormach CNC Milling machine. Within a few months the designers had some handmade links and the first 3 shots were fired in one of their backyards. Once the initial concept was proven they acquired a 10,000 square foot building to turn into their production facility. Production milling machines, lathes and other machines were ordered and were received and set in place in February of 2015. The design team then worked over 80 hours a week from February to the first of September of 2015 working out any bugs and making sure that they had a product that was perfectly reliable. They also wanted a product that would feed the most popular (and inexpensive) brands of 9mm 115 grain ammunition being produced. They started out testing many brands and ended up finding out that Tula steel case, PMC and Winchester White Box ammunition worked the best and surprisingly were the most inexpensive. The project was kept very tight-lipped until the end of August 2015 when they released a 15 second video teaser on YouTube. The video made the rounds on the popular internet forums where some claimed that it was vaporware or that it might be in production in “a few years”. The company set up a website with a pre-order page accepting orders, but no advance money, and 4 weeks later the first units were shipping. And the rest is, as they say, history. This author respects a company that does business this way instead of accepting money and then taking maybe years to get a new product into production.

As stated before the FM-9 is a complete upper unit. The unit contains the upper receiver and belt feed mechanism, bolt assembly, feed chute, top cover and barrel extension along with the barrel and quad-rail forearm. The unit’s top cover is hinged at the front with a release latch at its rear. This allows it to hinge up and forward just like most other belt-feds. The top cover has a short 6-slot length of Picatinny on its top rear that allows for optic mounting. The forearm also has Picatinny rails at the 3, 6, 9 and 12 o’clock positions. The quad rail’s top rail is extended in height so that it co-witnesses with the rail mounted to the top cover. The rails are all laser engraved with positioning numbers.

The unit’s barrel is entirely free floated and is held into the barrel extension with a quick attach mechanism. The FM-9’s barrel can be quickly removed by the mere push of a release lever just in front of the top cover hinge. You just push the release lever and rotate the barrel about 1/4 turn with its attached handle and pull it forward out of the upper receiver. This works perfectly for changing out a hot barrel or changing out the barrel for one of a different length. Barrels are available in either 11 or 16.5 inches. There is also now a complete pistol upper which features a 6 inch barrel and a shortened quad rail. The unit that I tested came equipped with an 11 inch barrel as I intended on testing it on a select-fire post sample M-16 lower receiver. If you are going to use this size barrel on your semi-auto lower be sure to register the lower as an SBR first.

The FM-9 uses a proprietary bolt and carrier. The unit’s bolt carrier interfaces with the lower receiver’s existing 5.56 buffer and recoil spring without having to swap them out. The rear of the bolt carrier is hollow much the same as a 5.56 bolt carrier but it contains a removable weight. This weight can be installed or removed as needed to tailor the upper to the ammo used. For instance, if you are using hotter ammunition you can leave the weight in to limit cyclic rate as well as eliminating advanced wear in internal parts. The included owner’s manual tells the procedure for doing this based on the ejection pattern of empty brass thrown from the unit. Being able to use everything in your existing lower without having to swap out any parts is a great added feature. The bolt will work in either semi or select-fire guns.

The only other part that is needed to complete the conversion is a block that is inserted into the lower receiver’s magazine well. This block comes with the kit and is inserted from the top of the receiver and locks into place with the lower’s magazine release. Being inserted from the top, this block cannot be accidently dropped out if the shooter hits the magazine release button. This block also houses the ejector. The block also is used to attach a belt bag onto the completed gun. This block as well as a 150 round belt bag and 150 links also come with the unit. The included black Cordura bag holds 150 rounds of linked ammunition and has a zipper along its bottom to allow for easy insertion of a loaded belt. The top part of the bag is riveted onto an aluminum block that features a mating dovetail attachment that locks into the magazine well block. A spring loaded ball detent holds the two blocks firmly together but allows for instant removal of an empty bag and insertion of a loaded bag. The finish on the entire upper, barrel and belt bag attachment block is a hard anodized matte black that matches the finish on almost all of today’s AR style black rifles.

We started the T&E test by naturally having to load ammunition into the links to make the belts. As stated before, the FM-9 is fed with disintegrating metal spring steel links. The links are truly a marvel. Remember you are dealing with a straight walled cartridge case, not a tapered or bottlenecked case like most other belt-fed guns use. The links for the FM-9 are made especially for it. They are not existing links that have been modified to work with this unit. The manufacturers told me that designing and manufacturing the links was almost as big a challenge as building the upper itself. The links are spring steel, parkerized and have a tab that locks into the rim of the 9mm cartridge. I proceeded to load 100 rounds of steel cased Tula 115 grain FMJ ammunition into 2-50 round belts. This was done by hand which can be accomplished, but loading the two belts took me almost 30 minutes. Not only that, both of my thumbs were still sore two days later. I remembered that a friend of mine had e-mailed me a press release about a new product that had just been introduced. It was a belt linker made just for the FM-9. A call to Shepard Bruner at www.triggerjockey.com and one of his Belt Loaders was on its way to me. The loaders that he makes are precision made units machined on CNC equipment. With his loader you can load 10 cartridges into links in about 30 seconds. You merely lay 10 links onto the linker, put 10 rounds of ammunition into milled slots and pull the handle. Do this 5 times and you have a 50-round belt and no sore thumbs.

With a supply of loaded belts I headed to the range. According to the manual that comes with the FM-9, loading the unit is a little different than loading most belt-feds. The manual states that you should load the upper with the top cover closed. It says to lock the bolt open and insert a belt up through the feed chute. Push the loaded belt up until you feel it lock over the belt retaining pawls and seat firmly against the cartridge stop. Give it a gentle pull to ensure that it is locked into place. When you are ready to fire, hit the bolt release or pull and release the charging handle to make the gun ready to fire. The FM-9 unit fires from the closed bolt position.

The upper was installed on a Colt M-16 post-sample lower receiver. The unit fit the lower perfectly with no rattle or play. I started out with the gun on semi-auto and proceeded to fire a few rounds. After about five rounds the gun stopped just as the bolt was pushing a round out of the belt. The top cover was opened, the gun cleared and we started to shoot again this time on full-auto. At about 10 rounds the gun stopped again with the same malfunction as before; a round just partially pushed out of the belt. The gun was cleared and this time a few drops of lube was put on the feed mechanism as well as the bolt. The gun then ran the rest of the belt with no issues what so ever. Not only that, it continued to run several more belts without any malfunctions. The upper unit was shipped to me without lubrication and that coupled with the fact that the links were all brand new must have attributed to the stoppages. The FM-9 unit has, to this date, continued to run perfectly with no malfunctions as long as the recommended ammunition was used. During the testing the ammunition used was Tula 115 grain FMJ and PMC 124 grain FMJ. They both ran without issues but we fired a lot more of the Tula as it was cheaper and more readily available. With Tula ammunition the unit ran like a sewing machine. The cyclic rate was checked with a PACT timer with rate-of-fire option and it averaged 820 rounds per minute as did just about all ammunition that was fired. With a cyclic rate like this and very low recoil you can literally write your name on the target.

I did fire the gun with some of my own 147 grain hollow point reloads. I installed a Thompson Machine suppressor for use with this ammo as it was a subsonic load. As long as velocities were kept in the 1000 to 1050 feet-per-second range the ammunition ran fine and was very quiet. The FM-9 is amazing with a suppressor attached and using subsonic ammunition. You can literally hear the bullets hitting the target as well as the empty brass and links hitting the ground. Empty brass is thrown from the unit at the 3 o’clock position about 6 to 8 feet from the ejection port and the links land about half that far from the gun. The links land in a small pile for easy collection but we always managed to lose a few. This wasn’t considered a big deal as links are only $59.95 per 1000 directly from Freedom Ordnance. The company originally said that the links had a lifespan of about 8 loading and firing cycles but now they have refined their heat treating process and the links now have an almost infinite lifespan. Depending on where you shoot you will probably lose the links before you wear them out. (Just as this article was going to press the author received a new brass catcher from Tactical Brass Recovery for testing. This catcher attaches to the host gun with an American Defense quick attach lever mount that fastens to the right side rail on the quad forearm. The lever is incorporated into a spring loaded, hinge mechanism that allows the entire catcher to pivot out away from the gun to access the charging handle or to clear a malfunction. It has a rigid frame made from lightweight polymer as well as a top pate with holes to see inside. It features a black Cordura catch bag with a zippered bottom for easy emptying and will hold well over 150 brass and links. This unit is extremely well made and never missed catching a piece of brass or a link in over 500 rounds of testing.)

The author mounted a Lucid M-7 Micro red dot sight to the Picatinny rail on the top cover as the FM-9 comes without sights. This little sight is just right for the FM-9. It automatically varies its intensity according to ambient light but can also be user adjusted for 7 levels of dot intensity. It also features an automatic shut down to prevent draining the battery from leaving the sight on. It will run for literally thousands of hours on a single AAA battery. The sight features a 2 MOA dot, is recoil proof (up to .458 SOCOM) and waterproof down to 80 feet. All this in a sight that retails for under $200.00.

The author also got to try out a pre-production model of Crimson Trace’s new LiNQ™ sighting system. The LiNQ consists of an AR pistol grip and a combination light and green laser module that communicates wirelessly. This allows the laser/light module to be placed anywhere on the weapon and be activated by pushing an instinctive activation button mounted in the front of the grip. This is done wirelessly without having to have cables or wires running anywhere on the weapon. There is nothing to catch on or get tangled up with. The LiNQ has 4 modes; light only, laser only, light and laser or laser with strobing light. The unit has a master on/off switch mounted on the side of the grip. It operates on a unique closed wireless system with each unit having an individual wireless signature. That way several operators can use LiNQ mounted weapons without interference from other LiNQ units. The laser is a very intense green that can be seen even in daylight. The white light in the new unit is a very powerful 300 lumens which will light up objects well over 100 yards at night. The unit runs continuously for over 2 hours on two CR2 batteries (one in the grip and one in the light module). The LiNQ gives the user point and shoot capability in any light.

Accuracy from the FM-9 unit was truly amazing. It was sighted in at 50 yards and shot from a shooting bench. Once the optic and the laser were dialed-in the upper would group under an inch on semi-auto. This from a belt-fed gun with a quick-attach barrel is really amazing. In fact, at that same distance entire 50 round belts could be fired into a 6 inch by 6 inch target. The unit is just that controllable.

During the test the gun was carried around quite a bit which began to be a chore. A complete gun with upper installed and with 150 rounds of 9mm ammunition in the belt bag weighs in at 16 pounds. It wears on you packing it around for any length of time. During the testing I had a chance to try out a new sling from Blue Force Gear that appears to be made just for an FM-9 equipped gun. It is their Padded Vickers Sling. The Patent Pending Padded Vickers Sling combines the tactical sling versatility of the Vickers Sling with the added comfort of a padded rear section. The 2” wide inline pad doesn’t move up or down the sling and is made from closed cell foam that won’t separate or gain water weight. The front section, with the Quick Adjuster, allows the user to instantly shorten or lengthen the sling for any mission. It allows very quick transitioning from a “hands-free” carry to a shooting position with a simple pull of the Adjuster. This sling is the most comfortable, easy to adjust sling this author has ever had a chance to use. It is outstanding and comes in two hardware variations; metal or nylon.

In conclusion, the FM-9 upper is one serious piece of equipment. I would not hesitate to recommend it to a police tactical unit or a VIP protection detail as it has shown outstanding reliability other than the first two hiccups when the unit was fired without any lube. That said, in subsequent tests after the upper was throughly cleaned it then ran fine without any lubrication whatsoever. Maybe two failures were even ammo related. Whatever it was, it never happened again in over 1000 rounds put through it.

By the way, the unit was not cleaned until after about the first 500 rounds were put through it. Even then the only thing done, was the top cover was opened up and the feed mechanism was swabbed out with some RamRodz swabs. Then the gun was put back into action. While I’m on the subject of cleaning, the unit is a pleasure to clean instead of a chore. The top cover and the feed block are held in place by a detent pin that can be easily pushed out with the tip of a cartridge. This allows the top cover and feed block to both be removed from the unit for cleaning. This coupled with a quick detach barrel and a bolt that is removed the same way a standard AR bolt is removed, makes the entire unit very easy and quick to clean. In fact, I merely dropped the parts in an ultrasonic cleaner for a few minutes and they were as clean as when they were new.

This author would be hard pressed to not recommend the FM-9 unit to anyone with an AR-15 or M-16 rifle. It is an accessory that is extremely well built, runs just as promised right out of the box and is reasonably priced. With an introductory retail price of just $1895.00 it is by far the most inexpensive way to own a belt-fed!

At the January 2015 SHOT Show, CZ-USA introduced two new firearms to the US market. The first was their civilian, pistol version of the CZ Scorpion submachine gun called the Scorpion EVO 3 S1 pistol. This pistol, chambered in 9mm, looked just like the submachine gun version but of course had no stock and was not capable of full-auto fire. The new pistol was the talk of the Show with an advertised retail price of $849.00. This author covered that firearm in depth in an earlier issue of Small Arms Review (see SAR V19 No 6 ). The second firearm introduced was their Bren 805 S1 Pistol in 5.56/.223. This gun is also being brought into the US as a pistol. It is basically a pistol version of their Bren 805 A2 select-fire carbine. It too lacks the folding collapsible stock and select-fire components of its brother carbine. SAR recently received one of these pistols for testing and it may just be one of the best .223 pistols on the market today.

The Bren 805 pistol is a short stroke pistol driven gun that features a monolithic upper receiver/forearm with a top Picatinny rail running its full length. It has a detachable bottom rail and places on each side of the forearm for side mounted rails. The side mounted rails don’t come on the gun but are available as an option. The screws that hold the side rails on can also be used to remove the barrel. Yes, the gun has a relatively quick-change removable barrel but more on that later. The upper receiver also has a side-mounted charging handle that can be moved to either side as the shooter prefers, making it ambidextrous. The upper receiver’s top rail has a set of all metal ruggedly built sights. The front sight contains a standard AR style post, adjustable for elevation. The rear sight has a rotating drum that offers 4 different diopters for use at varying ranges. It is also adjustable for windage. Both sights are affixed to the top rail by Allen head clamping screws and have serrated rear surfaces that eliminate any glare.

The pistol uses a polymer lower/pistol grip that houses all of the fire control parts in an internal metal housing. This lower has ambidextrous controls for both the safety and magazine release. The entire polymer lower can be removed from the gun by simply removing one quick detach pushpin. The lower also houses a button that can be used to lock the bolt open. The bolt remains locked open when the last round is fired from the magazine. Unfortunately the bolt hold open button does not release the bolt, you have to pull back on the charging handle for the bolt to release on a loaded magazine.

The new pistol is chambered for 5.56/.223 and is fed from any STANAG type AR-15/M-16 magazine. The guns come with two 30-round metal magazines. The magazines lock into the gun through a beveled magazine well. The metal magazines supplied had a slight wobble to them when locked into the gun. They worked fine but the wobble was just annoying. Several other magazines were tried such as the MagPul P-mag and the Lancer L5 Warfighter magazines and they locked up solidly with no movement. The backstrap of the lowers pistol grip is removable and different size backstraps can be ordered to fit any shooters hand. The lower is actually two pieces that are pinned together. The front part is the magazine well and contains the magazine release and the bolt hold open button. The rear part contains the fire control parts and the grip. With the gun designed this way, magazine wells for different calibers as well as different magazines can be interchanged. For instance in the Czech Republic the Bren 805 is also produced in 7.62 X 39 and takes AK magazines.

The pistol has an 11-inch barrel that is threaded 14 x 1 left hand and has a very effective 2-port muzzle brake/flash hider. The guns’ gas piston/gas block is permanently pinned directly to the barrel and is removed along with the barrel when it is removed. It also features a machined-in bayonet lug but with the 11-inch barrel of the pistol a bayonet won’t lock on correctly. The gas block has a user adjustable 2- position gas system. The only tool needed is the tip of a bullet. The first gas position is for standard conditions and the second position is for use in adverse conditions.

The Bren 805 series of firearms are all modular. By removing two takedown pins the pistol can be disassembled into its basic modules. These include the barreled upper receiver, the lower receiver/pistol grip, the captive recoil spring assembly, the bolt assembly and the receiver rear end cap. The rear end cap is quickly removable and contains an ambidextrous sling mounting point. This rear end cap also can also be replaced with an optional adapter that will accept either an arm brace or an AR style buffer tube. If the user should decide to register the gun as an SBR (short barreled rifle) a shoulder stock can be added to the gun very easily. In fact, CZ-USA will be offering the original side-folding, collapsible stock such as is used on their select-fire carbine, as soon as the 922r compliant parts are available.

As stated earlier the gun has a removable barrel and gas piston. By removing 6 Torx #25 screws from the 805’s forearm the complete barrel and gas system can me removed from the front of the monolithic upper receiver much the same as the FN SCAR rifle. This makes changing barrel lengths very easy and by changing the barrel and gas system, the magazine well assembly and the bolt head the gun can be changed to any number of calibers. This author would like to see a 300 Blackout conversion. To reinstall the barrel, it is merely inserted into the front of the upper receiver and the 6 Torx screws replaced. They then need to be torqued to 8 N/m (Newton meters) or 70.8 inch-pounds. The operator’s manual that was received with the gun did not have the torque or the proper sequence pattern for tightening the screws but there is an online manual on CZ-USA’s website for the select-fire Bren 805 which lists the torque specifications. It can be downloaded for free.

The testing of the Bren 805 pistol was done at various yardages to see what kind of accuracy the gun was capable of. With the pistol supported in a two hand hold, accuracy was about what you would expect from an almost 7 pound handgun held at arm’s length. It wasn’t anything to brag about. Not that the pistol is not capable of great accuracy, it is. It’s just not when held like a regular pistol. By adding a sling or an arm brace to the Bren, things changed dramatically.

Adding either one gives the shooter a 3-point purchase on the gun that makes it viable for hitting targets at extended ranges. This was also proven when the pistol was fired from an MTM Predator Shooting rest which is made for rifles as well as pistols. With the pistol equipped with an arm brace and a quality optic it would easily shoot ½ inch groups at 50 yards. This kind of accuracy continued through all of the different types and brands of ammunition used in the testing. The pistols trigger pull is excellent with the test gun’s trigger pull measured at exactly 4.1 pounds. It is a two-stage trigger with a short take-up and a very crisp break. It also has a very short reset which allows the gun to be used in rapid fire scenarios. In other words this pistol would make a perfect self-defense weapon. Its small size makes it perfect for carrying in a vehicle or even a backpack. The gun ejects its empty brass into a small pile about 10 feet straight out, 90 degrees from the ejection port. Empties came out of the gun looking clean enough to reload without polishing.

The gun was taken apart after the first 150 rounds and as expected was very clean inside the upper receiver and around the chamber area. This is common with most piston driven guns. As this is written, the gun has fired over 500 rounds of ammunition without cleaning it. The gun is still very clean inside. There has not been a single issue with the pistol. It fed, fired and ejected every round of ammunition perfectly and with authority. This is a gun that truly goes bang every time you pull the trigger. Recoil from the 11-inch is hardly noticeable even for recoil sensitive shooters. The guns muzzle brake is very effective and kills all the flash expected from the short barrel.

The only complaint this author has about the Bren 805 pistol is that, as this is written, the original collapsible, folding stock is not available yet as I want to SBR this one as soon as possible. Retail price for the Bren pistol is just shy of $2000.00. This may seem high but remember, this is for a gun that is modular and can be changed to several different calibers as well as being able to use different barrel lengths and even different style magazines. When the Bren’s price is compared to other guns of its kind such as the FN SCAR or the Bushmaster ACR it is not out of line. This author can see a multitude of accessories being available for this gun from CZ-USA as well as third party manufacturers.

IWI US LAUNCHES HIGHLY ANTICIPATED TAVOR X95

IWI US, Inc., a subsidiary of Israel Weapon Industries (IWI) Ltd., proudly debuts the compact, modern designed TAVOR X95 bullpup. IWI US introduced the X95 select-fire bullpup to law enforcement customers last year and now our civilian customers can buy a commercial version.
