It’s a complete kit made up of a B&T Hush Puppy suppressor, and a customised Glock 19, Gen5, non-MOS.

(Rob Curtis)

The Gen5 Glock included in the kit comes with a factory threaded-barrel and a couple of custom features from B&T. The first is a switch that immobilizes the slide, eliminating the sound of the semi-automatic pistol’s slide reciprocating for the quietest operation possible. The second feature is the custom milling for Aimpoint’s enclosed emitter ACRO mini red-dot optic. The beauty of B&T’s work is how deeply the ACRO is embedded into the slide. The bottom of the optic’s window is just about level with the top of the slide, offering co-witnessing with standard-height irons.

B&T USA’s Glock 19 Hush Puppy silencer features disposable, polymer wipes instead of metal baffles for the best sound suppression.
The B&T Hush Puppy silencer uses polymer wipes instead of conical metal baffles for the ultimate performance in noise reduction. The wipes will last a dozen rounds, or so, before they’re no longer able to trap gasses and suppress the noise of the host pistol. Replacing the wipes with a new set takes a minute and restores the can’s performance. B&T says the Hush Puppy is as quiet as it’s VP9 silenced, bolt-action pistol, which is pretty damned quiet.

The Hush Puppy includes a custom laser cut case, two boxes of 158-grain subsonic ammo, and tools to work on the pistol and suppressor.

B&T hasn’t released an official price, but a representative expects the kit to retail for between $2200 and $2500.

By Todd Burgreen

Striker-fired, polymer-framed handguns have evolved into the benchmark for personal defense, law enforcement, and military handguns. These handguns are simple to operate, reliable, accurate, and tough straight out of the box. While examples of striker fired polymer handguns predate 1982, this date is critical as the Glock 17 (G17) arrived on the handgun scene via Austrian police and military weapon trials. There can be little debate that current semi-automatic handguns were redefined by the 9mm G17 in terms of capacity, operation, and polymer construction. Glock handguns soon spread around the world. Other polymer, striker-fired models soon followed. The lack of skilled labor required to manufacture a polymer-framed pistol was also a major factor in establishing the Glock’s market dominance. Capitalism at work.

FORM DOESN’T ALWAYS FOLLOW FUNCTION

The term “Gucci Glock” has a derisive connotation. The term was likely coined to make fun of those that add aftermarket accessories to their Glocks more for flair than for any real functional gain. In short, it’s a way to make your utilitarian polymer handgun stand out. Personalize it. Never underestimate vanity as a selling point. But, when approached with performance enhancement guiding the way, aftermarket parts can be beneficial.

A stock Glock 19 with factory threaded barrel shown in comparison to our Gucci Glock project pistol. (Todd Burgreen)

Much attention seems to be focused on improving handgun platforms albeit with compensator, trigger, tweaked ergonomics, red dot optic, laser, or high intensity light. These upgrades not only provide enhanced functionality, but also increased flexibility in responding to a variety of threats. The direction of this article’s project was not so much about style, but performance enhancement. Everything we added, be it stippling, a compensator, a red dot sight, a tactical light/laser, or trigger was to increase functionality and capability. But, I will admit to succumbing to a little bit of individualism with the stippling design. More on this later.

A Glock G19 Gen5 MOS was my vehicle for exploring what aftermarket upgrades offered. Much of the impetus for this project stemmed from my recent re-entry into competition handgun shooting where high-end handguns are certainly appreciated for their ability to knock down steel plates or punch holes into cardboard targets at impressive rate. While not practical to carry your full-size 40-plus ounce match handgun concealed, what it offers performance-wise is duly noted. The goal was to get as close to this performance level as possible while preserving a reasonably compact, concealed carry handgun.

IF YOU AINT CHEATING — YOU AINT TRYING

The Gucci G19 is a compact handgun that pushes the performance envelope, while still maintaining real world application thanks to purposely chosen upgrades — Eotech EFLX, Radian Arms Afterburner+Ramjet, Timney Alpha trigger, stippling, and Crimson Trace tactical light/laser combo. (Todd Burgreen)

Personal defense has no responsibility to be a fair or an even contest. That’s why aftermarket products attract with promise superior performance. This is the incentive with the Radian Afterburner+Ramjet compensator combo for the G19. Compensators are expanding beyond competition applications and becoming more prominent with personal defense weapons. This is also contributing to the increased availability of smaller compensators that are still effective.

The Afterburner compensator connects to the Radian Ramjet match-grade fluted barrel using Radian’s Intra-Lok mounting system. The compensator is made from hardened 17-4 stainless steel. Intra-Lok is a securing method with a locking pin interfacing with an angled V-groove on the underside of the Ramjet barrel. This eliminates timing issues when a compensator is screwed on a threaded barrel. Concerns for jurisdictions prohibiting threaded barrels are also mitigated by using the Radian Afterburner+Ramjet system.

The Radian Afterburner+Ramjet is advertised as reducing recoil up to 44% when using 115-grain 9mm ammunition. This is with a compensator measuring only 0.47 inches long. The compact dimension is not random. An Afterburner+Ramjet-equipped G19 is the same overall length as the G19’s larger G17 brother, allowing for compatibility with G17 holsters. The angled front faces on the Afterburner aid in holstering.

The Radian Ramjet barrel is an accuracy upgrade over stock barrels, not just a vehicle for the Afterburner comp. The Radian barrel is crafted from 416R stainless steel with spiral flutes shaving ounces of weight. Rifling is conventionally cut 1:10-inch twist. Special attention is paid to the barrel lug and hood geometry to ensure concentric lockup that enhances accuracy. Both the Radian compensator and barrel are DLC coated. This imparts low friction, high hardness, and corrosion resistance, making overall durability and erosion from muzzle blast a non-issue.

Radian Arms Afterburner+Ramjet barrel and compensator combo for the G19. (Todd Burgreen)

A compensator was considered a crucial part of the Gucci Glock project. Part of the challenge of using a handgun involves controlling muzzle flip. Muzzle flip reduces the speed with which you can accurately fire multiple rounds on target, as well as hindering the efficient transition to adjacent targets. This is a crucial differentiator in a personal defense encounter. Recoil and muzzle flip also cause the pistol to move in the hand. To fire an accurate string of shots, the weapon must return to the target alignment point with the sights recovered before each shot. A compensator mitigates these effects.

DON’T FIGHT IT—EMBRACE IT

The most obvious personal defense handgun equipment upgrade over the last 10 years has to be red dot sights. An Eotech EFLX was mounted to the G19. The EFLX uses a top-mounted CR2032 battery offering 20,000 hours of run time. The EFLX mounted on the G19 featured a 3 MOA dot (with 6 MOA version also available). The EFLX features an aluminum housing that offers durability while keeping the sight weighing only 1.4 ounces.

A Radian Arms barrel and compensator and an Eotech EFLX red dot were incorporated into the Glock G19 Gen5 MOS slide. A C&H Precision plate was used to mount the EFLX on the slide. Suppressor height sights were also installed. (Todd Burgreen)

A C&H Precision V4 MIL/LEO adapter plate was used in lieu of standard Glock MOS plate. The C&H plate is more precise in connecting your red dot to the slide, while it also increases the amount of thread engagement connecting the red dot to the slide. With the factory Glock plate, you only get two threads from the two screws to hold the sight in place. The C&H plate features four recoil posts and two screws with seven to eight screw threads engaging for a more secure mount. The C&H Precision V4 MIL/LEO Optic Mounting Plate is machined from 6061 aluminum and treated with a hard-anodized finish.

A Crimson Trace CMR-207G light and laser combo was also mounted on the G19. The CMR-207G sports a compact, yet powerful, 400 lumen LED white light and 5mW green aiming laser in one unit. One often overlooked benefit of laser use is not requiring stereotypical presentation of the weapon or sight picture for effective use. Imagine crouching behind a car trunk with your head below the bumper with handgun held at arm’s length with Crimson Trace laser held on target, allowing for an engagement from such an untypical position. The CMR-207G light and laser literally keeps controls at your fingertips without having to change grip to activate either laser or light. A C&G holster was chosen to accommodate the Crimson Trace red dot/laser/light-equipped G19. The Radian Afterburner+Ramjet comp had no issue fitting the holster.

The frame of the Glock 19 was stippled, Timney trigger installed, and Crimson Trace CMR-207G mounted. (Todd Burgreen)

One last word on sighting arrangement. An important nuance of using a red dot sight on a personal defense handgun is to have co-witnessing iron sights. Anything electronic can fail, no matter how rugged. Another advantage of the co-witnessing using elevated suppressor-height iron sights is instant zero verification of the dot. If something is askew, it’s noticeable. XS Sights R3D Suppressor height night sights were fitted for this purpose.

GRIP IT AND RIP IT

Glock’s own modifications over the years—five generations of Glocks—indicate some tweaking has been needed at the factory to better bond the user to the weapon via grip and trigger. For example, the G19 Gen5 that is the basis of this article has done away with the previous Glock generation’s finger groove grip. However, more can be done with grip and trigger to enhance the shooter-to-weapon interface.

Stippling improves both the grip purchase and overall feel of the Glock in your hand. I prefer the random dot pattern style of stippling. You can vary the depth of the dots to customize the aggressiveness of the preferred grip texture. I prefer tacky versus ripping skin texture for a weapon like the G19 that may be used in an IWB holster. Stippling can be used to reduce material from the original polymer dimensions. This helps someone like me with average- to smaller-sized paws. Memory ledges of stippling were placed on the frame above the trigger guard for thumb and index finger resting points. The undercut of the trigger guard at the frame was also deepened, ever so slightly. This allows a higher grip on the pistol, putting the pistol lower in your hand and helping to limit muzzle flip.

Stippling, when coupled with a good outline and meticulous finishing of edges, provides improved overall aesthetics. Speaking of aesthetics, my stipple job was completed by a good friend who has performed his magic on several of my Glocks, as well as hundreds of others over the years. He could not resist adding a little sass to his work by including a Sasquatch outline on the grip. This was my one moment of weakness with the Gucci Glock project, when I gave into a bit of flash over substance.

Along with grip, the importance of a highly performing trigger cannot be overestimated. This is where the aftermarket area has really stepped up with improving Glock performance. A Timney Triggers Alpha Competition trigger was installed in the G19 Gen5. Timney has been an industry leader in aftermarket triggers since 1946 and their work on the Glock platform is well received. Their Alpha trigger offers their aftermarket drop-in performance to Glock users. An aluminum sear housing replaces the trigger return spring, but all other Glock internal safeties and firing pin spring stay put. The firing pin spring staying OEM is a big deal. Previous quests to lower the Glock’s trigger pull into the sub-4-pound range involved changing the firing pin spring to a lighter variant which induced light strikes. Timney lists the Alpha as offering a 3-pound pull weight. My Timney trigger was in the 3.5- to 4-pound range, as measured with my old-school RCBS trigger pull scale.

A Timney Alpha trigger installed in the Glock 19.
The Timney Alpha trigger finishes off the Gucci Glock project. It’s flat trigger shoe and trigger safety tab are machined in the USA out of aluminum alloy and affixed to an NP3-plated trigger bar. The trigger shoe and safety tab are both anodized. The broad, flat face of the trigger allows a straight rearward press. Pre-travel has been reduced by as much as 20% without compromising safety, resulting in a clean, crisp break, and reduced over-travel. A graph of the trigger pull would be interesting as there was something positive about it that is hard to describe using words. The reset length is minimal with a positive, tactile feel. This translates into a handgun that can send rounds downrange rapidly and accurately.

PERFORMANCE

BANG TIME WITH STYLE

The host Glock 19 was chosen for enhancement based on its ideal blend of carry-ability and performance. The Radian barrel/compensator, Eotech EFLX red dot, and Timney trigger produces capability exceeding most weapons of such compact size. My Gucci G19 is a carry handgun that not only holds its own tactically, but also on match days. I could not resist proofing my setup at Origin Shooting Outlaw Steel Matches as well as two-gun practice sessions. Faxon and Warne Tactical magazine extensions were used to ramp up typical G19 15-round magazines to 20 and 18 rounds, respectively.

The Gucci Glock G19 increases the effectiveness of a compact concealed carry handgun beyond what most thought capable thanks to judicious selection of upgrade components. The Gucci G19 came into its own for precise fire when placing the dot on the target and applying correct trigger control. (Todd Burgreen)

Magazines were loaded with ammunition from Federal, Speer, Hornady, SIG Sauer, and Black Hills Ammunition. The modified G19 was fired one handed, including use of the non-dominant hand, in order to detect orientation sensitivity that might be traced back to the compensator. The Gucci G19 showed it could digest anything fed to it. Premium self-defense JHP, target, and match 9mm loads including 115-, 124-, and 147-grain bullets were used.

The modified G19’s simplicity of operation, superior trigger, red dot, and compensator allowed for rapid engagement of targets. Performance is further accentuated with improved ergonomics thanks to stippling that ensures that the hand is near the optimum grip position as soon as the pistol clears the holster. Proper grip sets the stage for the most efficient use of a red dot-equipped handgun. Kinesthetic awareness is the body’s knowledge of the relative location and engagement of tension in its parts. A solid, repeatable grip is the key for tracking the red dot as it moves up and down under recoil during multiple round drills, as well as finding it quickly after the draw stroke.

LEARNED LESSONS

I have a few quick observations based on my time spent on the range with the Gucci Glock G19. Mind your hand placement when racking the slide. Do not grab too far forward on the slide, near the comp. Two negative things can happen — first, you can pinch your hand between the slide and the comp, and second, you might end up trying to rack the slide with your hand on the comp, which does not move rearward. The Gucci Glock G19 came into its own when placing the red dot on the target and applying correct trigger control. Groups with the Eotech EFLX red dot-equipped G19 were markedly smaller than those shot with iron sights. This statement became even more true as distances increased.

The modified G19’s simplicity of operation, superior trigger pull, red dot and compensator allowed for rapid engagement of targets. This is further accentuated with improved ergonomics thanks to stippling job ensuring that the hand is near optimum grip position as soon as the Gucci Glock clears the holster. (Todd Burgreen)

Lastly, concerns of blinding muzzle flash when using a compensator were NOT borne out. Slow motion videos and burst photography did not reveal this phenomenon. You could definitely see the gas cloud of muzzle blast directed upward which counteracts muzzle flips — but no ignition.

You cannot default into thinking it is only about the gear — no matter how nicely we appointed the Gucci Glock G19. Mindset and sound training are crucial. It’s safe to say red dots are not going anywhere and it seems the same can be said for compensators. A compact handgun such as the G19 stocked with full power 9mm +P rounds certainly benefits from the compensator for both the experienced and novice shooter for different reasons. The experienced shooter can run the weapon faster while maintaining accuracy, while the novice is provided a more controllable platform that allows easier application of the fundamentals of pistol control.

WITCHES BREW

We’re hoping our Gucci Glock will be recognized for its successful amalgamation of performance-enhancing aftermarket upgrades. It’s a compact handgun that pushes the envelope past established performance norms, while still offering benefits in a real-world application. The Gucci Glock G19 increases the effectiveness of a compact concealed carry handgun beyond what most thought possible.

By Todd Burgreen

Shadow Systems, based in Plano, TX, arrived on the polymer striker-fired handgun scene in 2016. The company quickly gained a reputation as a solid upgrade over other polymer framed striker-fired weapons on the market. Not only talking about the Austrian variation, but all offerings. This stems from Shadow Systems’ in-house manufacturing of slides, barrels, triggers, and internals. Shadow Systems also employs patented MIM and injection mold tooling for frames and small parts. An example is Shadow Systems own LCI extractor. It features proprietary geometry for extra reliability and consistent 3 o’clock brass ejection pattern versus brass back in your face you get with some other polymer striker-fired handguns.

The CR920P is great example of Shadow Systems’ innovation and ability to respond quickly to emerging weapon technology and trends. As we know red dots on personal defense handguns are here to stay. Most Shadow System models come standard with an optic-ready slide cut, including the CR920P. The Shadow Systems optic cut is unique thanks to its ability to accommodate multiple manufacturer red dots without need for adaptor plates. The Shadow Systems mounting method allows for a lower 1/3 co-witness with the Shadow System low-profile factory sights. The elimination of suppressor height iron sights protruding upward from the slide will be warmly received by anyone that has been gouged or had them snag on a cover garment during a draw stroke. Co-witnessing is important, as anything electronic can fail, no matter how rugged; thus, it’s important to have iron sights ready as a backup plan.

Shadow Systems CR920P shown with a variety of premium personal defense loads from Hornady, SIG Sauer, Black Hills, Federal, and Norma.

What sets apart the CR920P from its stablemates is the integrated compensator at the end of the slide. An earlier compensated model, the DR920P, showed Shadow System’s creativity. Merely screwing on a compensator was not good enough. In fact, the Shadow System compensator does not require a threaded barrel. This is good news for those living in jurisdictions prohibiting threaded barrels.

The CR920P takes this a step further. The CR920P employs a proprietary 3-lug muzzle that works in combination with a centrally located locking lever in the body of the compensator. The intent here was to keep the pistol as compact as possible. The compensator is machined in a way to give a unified appearance with the slide and frame. This allows the CR920P to fit into a wide array of holsters created for the Glock 43X/48 models from Austria by way of Smyrna, Georgia.

FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION

With the CR920P, Shadow Systems creates a superior covert carry handgun that excels in gunfighting, not just reactive defense most associated with smaller framed handguns. The CR920P is a slim, petite, sub-compact polymer handgun chambered in 9mm. Dimensions lend it to pocket, ankle, belly band, or other deep cover methods of concealed carry.

The CR920P is created from scratch. It is NOT a customized Glock. The CR920P benefits from Shadow Systems quality control and experienced gunsmiths pulling it all together. With that said let’s lay out what the CR920P consists of; Shadow Systems 1:10 twist conventional rifling 3.75-inch spiral fluted bronze TiCN coated match barrel made from 416-R stainless steel, distinct Shadow Systems slide machined from 17-4 stainless steel with enhanced serration all around, patent pending optic cut, black nitride finish on the slide, steel iron sights with green Tritium front, undercut trigger guard, stainless steel guide rod, integral railed dust cover, and a flat-faced trigger.

ATTENTION TO DETAIL

Shadow Systems slides are machined from 17-4 stainless steel. The CR920P’ slide is not just a hunk of steel meant to host barrel, sights etc. The slide is well thought out—from serration pattern to optic cut. Special attention is paid to the barrel lug and hood geometry to ensure concentric lockup enhancing accuracy. The serrations are not merely aesthetic. The purposely designed directional nature of the serrations provide an aggressive grasping surface when manipulating the slide… but they also reduce friction when coming out of the holster. The serrations combined with the window cut in the slide also reduces reciprocating slide mass. Lastly, the serrations contribute to minimizing weight. The CR920P weighs only 20 ounces.

The petite CR920P breaks down simply into five pieces—frame, slide, barrel, dual recoil spring and compensator.

The CR920P sits low in your hand for better recoil control. An extended beavertail and double trigger guard undercut assists with proper grip straight from the holster. Material is relieved from where the guard connects with the grip as well as under the center of the trigger guard. A nice touch usually only found on polymer frames sent out for custom stippling are the recoil ledges on both sides of the frame in front of the trigger guard for off-hand thumb placement as well as finger placement when not manipulating the trigger. Shadow Systems enhanced the CR920P’s polymer frame using a texturing pattern, lengthened backstrap skirt and a streamlined extended beavertail. These things were done so that the CR920P feels like a larger handgun when fired. Accurate strings of fire with multiple rounds placed on target bears out the Shadow Systems design philosophy.

The CR920P’s compensator further accentuates the recoil control characteristics of the Shadow Systems design philosophy. It produces an extremely benign recoil impulse and lowered decreased muzzle flip due to the single-chamber comp using muzzle gases to drive the slide down after firing. This is key in keeping the handgun on target during multiple shot strings of fire.

WHY COMP?

Just as with red dot sights on handguns, compensators are expanding beyond competition applications and becoming more prominent in the realm of personal defense weapons. This drives the impulse to reduce compensator size while still retaining effectiveness. Why? Part of the challenge of using a handgun involves controlling muzzle flip. No one is saying a 9mm needs a brake. Do not confuse muzzle brake with compensator. However, controlling muzzle rise is a valid goal.

Muzzle flip reduces the speed with which you can accurately fire multiple rounds. The weapon must return to the sight alignment point before firing again. Recoil and muzzle flip also cause the pistol frame to move in the hand. A well-designed compensator allows for an easier job in firing the weapon under normal conditions, as well as under duress or with one hand. Most literature on compensators indicate 30% to 40% reduction of muzzle flip. Testing protocols can be somewhat subjective.

A size-equivalent non-compensated handgun was fired next to the CR920P. I not only fired the weapons but also volunteered students who were attending a concealed carry certification course at my home range Echo Valley Training Center. Many were new to handgun shooting which served my purposes perfectly. I loaded the same ammunition and have shooters engage a target 7 to 10 yards away. There was no prefacing what I was looking for; just questions after each handgun was shot asking about the perceived recoil and muzzle flip. The CR920P was unanimously judged as much more pleasant and easier to shoot accurately.

Accuracy test protocol consisted of three five-shot groups with each ammunition type. Group sizes were averaged. Velocity figures obtained by averaging five rounds fired over a Caldwell Precision Shooting chronograph.

NOTHING QUITE LIKE IT

The CR920P can be compared to a Glock 43 in terms of size. However, the CR920P arrives in a zippered pistol rug with two magazines that indicate something different is afoot—one, a 13+1 and the other, a flush 10+1 capacity magazine. This is a significant improvement over the G43’s 6-round magazine with the CR920P maintaining nearly the same dimensions of the G43, including height and width. This capacity increase is wrought by proprietary metal Shadow Systems magazines. The magazine redesign is necessary for the CR920 to achieve Shadow System’s higher capacity goal. With that said, you are not going to be jamming G43, G26, or any other GLOCK pattern magazine into your CR920 Elite. Calm your rising angst as extra Shadow System CR920 magazines are available for $26 to $28.

A variety of 9mm loads were tested with the CR920P, including Norma, Federal, Hornady, SIG Sauer and Black Hills Ammunition. The CR920P was fired one handed, including use of the non-dominant hand, to verify there was no sensitivity in terms of reliability. Premium self-defense JHP, target, and match 9mm loads including 108-, 115-, 124-, and 147-grain bullets were used. The CR920P digested anything fed to it.

ON POINT FOR CCW

The CR920P is a near perfect blending of concealed carry compactness while maintaining performance. The ability to mount a red dot only increases its appeal. With that said, I was somewhat surprised by my preference of keeping the CR920P iron-sighted. This stems from maintaining as compact a profile as possible. I found under the right circumstances the CR920P could be considered for pocket carry, especially without a red dot mounted. This is quite an upgrade over any of the miniature 380 ACPs on the market.

Galco’s Front Pocket Horsehide, Quicktuk Cloud, Blakguard belt, and Underwrap Elite belly bland allowed for exploring what the CR920 Elite offered as an ultra-concealable handgun.

Various Galco holsters were not only incorporated into range testing, but also incorporated inyou a daily concealed carry routine with the CR920P. Galco’s Front Pocket Horsehide, Quicktuk Cloud, Blakguard belt, and Underwrap Elite belly band allowed for exploring what the CR920P offered as an ultra-concealable handgun. I am not about to decide what is the best way to carry the Shadow Systems CR920P for others, as everyone has their own ideas on balancing concealment with practical carry.

Scenarios involving plate racks and dueling trees were run. Engaging targets from behind cover or on the move was incorporated into testing. Magazine changes were done for the dual purpose of getting a feel of manipulating CR920P and verifying how quickly it could get back on target. Speaking of magazines, Shadow Systems attention to detail is found here, too. The 13-round magazine’s extension features the same texture on its front pad as the grip providing a comfy spot for your pinky finger. The rear of the 13-round magazine’s basepad is notched to accommodate the lengthened backstrap. With the 10-round magazine, the backstrap extends below the rear of the magazine eliminating a possible pinch point.

Compensators are expanding beyond competition applications becoming more prominent with personal defense weapons. A well-designed compensator allows for an easier job in firing the weapon under normal conditions as well as under duress or with one hand.

The Shadow Systems CR920P balances size to firepower for the concealed carry practitioner. The ability to mount a red dot will only add to its appeal. The Shadow Systems CR920P is a compact handgun that pushes the envelope past norms, while still maintaining real world application. The CR920P increases the effectiveness of a compact handgun beyond what most thought capable.

By Dan Shea –

Most of us remember our first gun, first pistol, first rifle, etc., and I remember clearly my first Glock 17. I was a 1911 guy, and had experience with many firearms around the world. It had an AL serial number, and it was 1986. Well, I wasn’t hooked, didn’t like the safety on the trigger, and retired it from carry. Tried a lot of other handguns. I had been partial to my Hi-Power overseas. And then, in 1988, I was persuaded to give Glock another chance … there was a true paradigm shift occurring in handguns, and I’ve carried a variety of Glocks ever since.

In October of 2022 at the National Defense Industrial Association’s Future Force Capabilities Conference & Exhibition, the Small Arms Committee of the Armaments Division awarded Glock the prestigious Ambrose Award (named in honor of James R. Ambrose); recognizing the company for the incredible contributions it has made to small arms. The Glock pistol, with its polymer construction, moved the science and practice of handgun use in an entirely new direction globally, with polymer-based, striker-fired pistols now ruling much of today’s market.

Glock, Inc.’s Vice President of Marketing & Sales, Josh Dorsey, was there to accept the award, along with Shelby Lasater, Director of Government/Federal Programs. While at the exhibition, we continued our discussions on the new Glock 47 pistol, including the fact that U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) had selected a suite of three pistols to meet all of their needs. There was a 40,000-gun order. The U.S. Secret Service reviewed the system and also purchased these three models for their own agents.

CBP’s new range of pistols, bottom view, from top: Glock 26 Mod 1, Glock 19 Gen5 MOS, Glock 47 MOS capable.

To date, no substantive articles have been produced on the Glock 47; but there has been a lot of re-hashing of the publicly-released information, lots of extrapolation. It is the desire of this publication to give a much deeper view into the Glock 47 and this suite of pistols that was chosen by not just CBP, but also the U.S. Secret Service. They are also being considered for purchase by other government groups. As an aside, after shooting the Glock 47, I’m hoping that Glock follows through and offers it to the public.

The cliff notes version? CBP wanted to have a suite of three pistols with many interchangeable parts to simplify supply train, common training techniques; one for each of their defined agent roles. The Glock 47 is an MOS (Modular Optic System) ready full size 9x19mm Glock pistol, similar in size to the Glock 17. This is for tactical agents and can be accessorized with an MOS and integrated flashlight system. The Glock 19 is a 5th generation Glock pistol with MOS mounting capability, smaller in size than the Glock 47 … perfect for everyday carry and duty use for uniformed CBP officers. For those CBP officers in subdued roles (undercover, plainclothes, etc.) the Glock 26 Mod 1 fills out the suite and has an 11-round magazine that is unique to this model – an extra round in the same package size.

There are some interesting side benefits for Glock users in general and those who have these issued.

The Glock 47 frame is the same as a Glock 45 frame.
The Glock 47 slide with recoil spring will work on a Glock 19 Gen 5 frame.

View of the size difference: Top to bottom: Glock 47 MOS, Glock 19 Gen5 MOS, Glock 26 Mod 1.

This means that with a Glock 19 Gen 5 and a Glock 47, you have four pistol variants available to you … three of which are new to the end user. The Glock 47 (the size of a G17) is the first one, and what is basically a Glock 45 the second, then the Glock 19 Gen 5 MOS is the third, and finally—one that Glock doesn’t make, but the Glock shooters have always wanted—you can make a Glock 19L (long slide) for your fourth. This is because the recoil spring is the same for all (not the 26 variant). These two basic Glocks in the CBP suite give the operator versatility to decide which size is needed for carry for the mission.

A note from Shelby Lasater of Glock:

“With the shorter recoil spring that is in the G47, when you shoot it, you have a softer recoil, not weaker but softer, which enables better control and faster re-engagement on the target. It can also enhance on the competition side for those who feel the G34 is too long of a pistol.”

This author had already fired a Glock 17 next to the Glock 47 for several magazines, and my observation was that the recoil impulse was stretched out a bit longer … I found the Glock 47 a “smoother” shoot than the Glock 17. It was interesting to read Shelby’s take reinforcing that impression.

Glock 47 utilizing the MOS mount system for the Trijicon RMR (RMO2) with the 3.25 MOA red dot reflex sight. The end results can be seen in the target pictures later in this article.

I’ve tried to cover the details in the pictures and comparisons, so let’s consider the live fire testing. First, we needed to choose ammunition, and Glock has very specific detail on this. For 9mm 115 grain (7.5 gram) bullets, the maximum velocity should be 1180fps (350m/sec) and the maximum chamber pressure should be under 43,500PSI (3000BAR). This should give a guideline. Federal 147 HST has a heavier bullet (147 grain) but is within the velocity (1000fps) and pressure guidelines, and besides, that is what the CBP has matched these guns with for duty. Thus, that is what we tested with.

It takes decades of experience to test a firearm properly, and self-deception is the enemy of many a wannabe writer. I know my limits, I’m hell on wheels with submachine guns, rifles, machine guns, and grenade launchers, but modest with handguns. I asked two of the most knowledgeable and experienced pistol instructors in Nevada to help: Chuck Bolding and Scott Leonard. Both have more than 50 years’ experience and both are expert-level handgun trainers, armorers, and shooters. Both also have a soft spot in their holsters for Glocks. Chuck is an aficionado of the Weaver stance; Scott uses Modified Isosceles.

Chuck: “All three of the Glock models were monotonously reliable, pretty much as expected. That’s a good thing, not a bad thing. No issues at all in the whole test. We cleaned and prepped with a bit of Royal Purple lube and inspected the firearms. At the range we set up course of fire, and prepared a good selection of basic factory range ammo to work the guns out, get the feel of them, before going into testing with the issue type ammunition. Neither of us had too much experience with the RMR-type sights, so it would take a thousand rounds or so to build the natural “go-to” on the red dot, not the iron sights. After the initial tests, when we put the RMR on, we burned ammo until we could get natural with it. It was a beautiful day at Boulder Rifle & Pistol Club Range, with a pile of ammo and some interesting guns so, a good day. When it came down to testing, we let the guns cool down, did other things, then came back and tested with the issue type ammo. Both Scotty and I found that the RMR was a very good feature to use. Not sure about holstering but it certainly brought the groups in as seen. We fired one 10-inch group at 40 yards with the Glock 47, pretty impressive. Center of mass. All three Glocks did their jobs and that’s pretty much what we expected and the reason so many agencies are using them – they work.”

All in all, it’s an impressive lineup that Glock has to begin with, and the carefully chosen pistols in this suite give a multitude of advantages to the officers who are issued them or have to work with them. Here’s hoping Glock brings the Glock 47 to the civilian market in 2023, along with the Glock 26 Mod 1.

The Shock Shield is the simple solution to reducing recoil in a variety of rifles and shotguns. No need for different size pads, as its one size design stretches and contours to a variety of stock shapes and dimensions. Filled with a pocket of soft gel, felt recoil is greatly reduced. Easy on and easy off. Simply stretch it over the butt of your firearm. Keep one in your range bag so you always have it handy! lymanproducts.com

The Profile Holster was designed to be an ultra-concealable, minimalistic, appendix carry holster without the drawbacks. Distinct features such as the matte-edge finish and minimal material used facilitate in a comfortable fit providing maximum concealment for concealed carry. Each AIWB Profile holster is formed to the Springfield Hellcat for a snug fit with low drag. The adjustable retention along with the inherent positive retention “SNAP” ensures the firearm is secure when holstered.

Removal of extra material between the muzzle and retention screw adds to a layer of comfort without digging into the body or thigh. The trigger guard is intentionally undercut to promote a higher grip on the Springfield and allow for a magazine release while the firearm is fully holstered. From the injection-molded belt clip to the soft loop option, the cant settings are easily adjustable from 0-15 degrees to allow for a perfect grip on the Hellcat. tulster.com

SAVAGE ARMS
Rascal Target

The industry’s safest micro rimfire has come of age. The Rascal Target is built for accuracy and adaptability, thanks to a precision hardwood stock, heavy 16 1/8-inch barrel, one-piece Picatinny rail and threaded (1/2-28) muzzle. Like the original Rascal, the single-shot rifle cocks by lifting the bolt and unloads easily—without pulling the trigger. The design also builds superior shooting skills thanks to full-size rifle features, including Savage’s user-adjustable AccuTrigger™ system. The platform offers far better safety, functionality and accuracy than competing designs. savagearms.com

Caldwell now brings the same revolutionizing ammo loading process of the AR-15 Mag Charger to the AK platform by introducing the new AK (7.62×39) Mag Charger that is designed to hold 50-rounds from any common 50-round ammo box. Simply align the bullet tips with holes in the Mag Charger and dump them in. Specially designed indexing tabs align all the rounds in the loader at the same time. No need to handle each round. Then insert your AK magazine into Mag Charger, operate the plunger back and forth and with each stroke 5 rounds are loaded until the magazine is full. Now you can load 50 rounds into two AK magazines in less than 15 seconds. Made from a highly durable polycarbonate, the loader is compatible with all 7.62×39 ammo. The loader allows the user to load AK magazines in just seconds and is compatible with all AK platform mags. The loader loads 5 rounds per “stroke” with an auto advance feature. Caldwell also introduces their new Mag Charger Ammo Boxes. The Mag Charger Ammo Box is optimized to drop ammo into the AR-15 and AK-47 Mag Chargers. The AR ammo box will hold 50 rounds of .223, 5.56 and .204. The AK ammo box will hold 50 rounds of 7.62×39. The durable polymer design is proven to be extremely tough and great for long term storage. The lid can easily be removed for use when loading. They are available in 5 Pack.
For many years, Lone Wolf Distributors (LWD) of Oldtown, Idaho has built a reputation providing high quality parts and accessories for Glock handguns at reasonable prices. Most notably is their diverse catalogue of aftermarket barrels that include a number of conventionally rifled alternatives for all Glock models. These can be had in stock lengths, extended lengths to satisfy Canadian legal requirements or handgun hunters, extended threaded versions for sound suppressor owners, and conversion barrels that permit the firing of alternate ammunition (such as 9mm in a .40 pistol). They have also built a quiet reputation of innovation that has included their own versions of popular Glock items and those not available from the original manufacturer such as extended slides for certain models.

LWD unveiled their latest innovation at the 2010 SHOT show in Las Vegas, NV; a replacement polymer frame with modular interchangeable grip back straps to accommodate shooters with smaller grip preferences. This new frame is called the Timberwolf, and like an original Glock frame, is a serial numbered part that must be transferred like any other firearm. The first of these were produced as prototypes and distributed in the summer of 2010 to customers willing to give them an immediate 1,000 round test drive. The Timberwolf is intended as a replacement for the original frame while making use of all original slide and internal components from the host gun. The one tested for this article was assembled with a LWD slide and barrel in .40 S&W, and further tested with an original slide and barrel from a Glock counterpart (Model 22).

Some of the Timberwolf features include:

Oversized magazine release button (previously available from LWD as a user modification for existing Glock models)

3 channel accessory rail that fits most existing Glock compatible lights and mounts

Extended beavertail

Two grip back strap panels (one straight, one curved)

Textured grip sides and front strap finger grooves with trigger guard undercut

Tapered frame to match beveled face of LWD slides

LWD slide showing the logo, extended beavertail, and smaller back strap seam fit.

When assembling the Timberwolf, the only specialized parts required are a trigger/ejector housing from a slim frame model and a late generation locking block, which are available from LWD if the host Glock is of an earlier vintage. Otherwise, it accepts all original parts and most qualified Glock armorers should be able to assemble the finished product easily. The Timberwolf looks well designed cosmetically and internally. The seams and fit of the back strap panels are snug and there are locking block cutouts absent from earlier Glock models where tiny frame cracks were known to develop.

The grip texture on the front is excellent allowing for good retention but not so sharp as to be uncomfortable. The rear of the grip is significantly smoother and could be improved if retextured to match the front. The back strap panels are removed by pressing the hook internally within the magazine well and pushing downward. The early versions could also be removed with a sharp impact to the bottom of a seated magazine while firmly gripped by overcoming the hook tension with direct force. The downside of this fact was that a sharp magazine seating motion could dislodge the back of the grip. This was more likely with the smaller of the two grip panels initially tested but not a problem with the larger one for some reason and subsequent versions seem to work flawlessly. The larger panel was meant to feel similar to a SIG Sauer grip shape and the smaller panel is simply the smallest grip you can find for a Glock handgun: no grip reduction could ever do better.

Test firing the Timberwolf was accomplished with both a Glock slide and barrel and a LWD slide and barrel. Accuracy was good for each but slightly better with the original Glock parts. Reliability was excellent with either slide when using the original Glock barrel; however, most reloaded ammunition and a few varieties of factory ammunition had feeding problems using the LWD barrel. This includes reloaded ammunition specifically tested by hand chambering the cartridges in the barrel in lieu of a chamber gauge prior to their use. LWD barrels are known to have tight chambers that fully support the case and this makes them less forgiving when it comes to feeding and chambering reliability. For customers with problems shooting reloads, LWD offers a number of suggestions and remedies including chamber modifications they’ll do to customer specifications.

Most factory ammunition functioned reliably with the occasional stoppage just short of achieving a full lock up in battery and one failure to fully eject a fired case in 700 rounds. This should not be a problem once the parts are sufficiently broken in and/or appropriate lubrication is applied. This pistol was assembled dry and thoroughly tested without lubrication for the first 1,000 rounds. No other cycling problems were identified, although ejected cartridge cases tended to have a diverse distribution and a number went to the left (a few even struck the shooter in the forehead). When the ejector was replaced with one intended for a .40 S&W Glock pistol, the ejection pattern normalized.

Name and serial number markings on the inside of the LWD slide.

When reloading the pistol, the magazine seated and was locked adequately by the release button, although there appeared to be some up and down slop in the final seat position when locked into place, but no reliability consequences of this were identified. The magazine fit in the well is snug to the point of not allowing the loaded or unloaded magazine to drop free unless generation 4 magazines are used; however, LWD has assured the author that this issue was rectified for the final production models. A cutout on the lower front area of the grip gives access to the magazine to grip and remove it but no such cutout exists in the back so this task requires more dexterity than one would like. Because the thickness of the grip sides is greater than the width of the stock magazine floor plate, gripping the magazine from the side is not easy unless an extended floor plate is installed.

Original ejector provided with slim frame ejector and trigger connector housing (left) and standard frame version with .40 S&W ejector (right) that normalized ejection.

Both the LWD slide and barrel are stainless steel with a black oxide coating that matches the frame nicely. LWD barrels are conventionally rifled with 6 sharp lands/grooves and a left hand twist. For unknown reasons, this particular barrel would come to rest in battery in one of two positions: normal (fully parallel with the top of the slide) or slightly below. In the normal position, direct pressure to the top of the barrel would snap it into the lower position but not unlock the action in any way. This occurred with either slide and the only noticeable effect from this condition is a slightly off center firing pin impact that never caused a misfire.

A number of brands of ammunition were test fired in the Timberwolf.

The LWD slide has fine sharp serrations both front and back and a tapered forward contour that matches the Timberwolf frame and is similar to the subcompact Glock pistols. The loaded chamber indicator extractor functioned perfectly and the slide shape conforms to the most current ejection port profile with the 15 degree rear angle. The only exterior markings are a small Lone Wolf logo on the right rear portion of the slide; internally the slide is marked “LONE WOLF” with the designated caliber. Front sight cutout and rear dovetail match standard Glock sight dimensions.

The Timberwolf with TLR-1 tactical light fitted to the Picatinny rail.

As with any new product, some improvements are likely in the near future and Lone Wolf’s beta-test marketing strategy should help this process considerably. After 2/3 of the first 1,000 rounds, a small crack developed on one side of the frame by the left rear corner of the locking block. A similar problem was common in 1st and early 2nd generation Glock pistols and like those early Glocks, this presented no problem with functionality and did not appear to worsen. Because this was the first of that kind, LWD requested a return of the frame for immediate replacement and study. It was later discovered by LWD staff that the cause was the installation of an older locking block by the author – in other words, operator error. The subsequent replacement frame with correct locking block showed no such faults in subsequent use.

My list of desired changes is short and includes a looser magazine well for drop-free reloading with early magazines, improved grip back strap texture, and some kind of rear magazine well cutout so that the magazine can be pinched between two fingers and removed if stuck. Regarding the LWD barrel and slide, chamber modifications to improve feeding reliability and wider slide serrations that are not quite as sharp would round out the list. The barrel modifications were already completed for this particular barrel and the results are enhanced reliability.

Removeable Timberwolf back straps in 2 sizes.

Extended height suppressor sights serve as back up and the threaded barrel is also a Lone Wolf product.

Firearm evolution is a slow tedious matter at times with breakthroughs and improvements coming in bits and pieces influenced by a multitude of factors such as manufacturing techniques, metallurgy, cartridge improvements, technology, market forces and countless other factors as experienced in individual countries and cultures. The firearm development path covers centuries of time. One of the most basic concepts that has remained constant, or stagnant depending on point of view, are handgun sights. The earliest muzzle loading pistols feature sights that we can recognize today in the form of a front post and some sort of rear notch that it is aligned with. Modern open sights are more refined, but the basic form is the same – align front post within rear notch. This is now undergoing a change with the advent of installing red dot sights (RDS) in lieu of the traditional iron open sights for everyday personal defense weapons, law enforcement and military weapons. Competition handguns have sported enhanced sights, albeit red dots or magnified optics, for decades now; however a subtle movement is underway to incorporate red dots into everyday concealed carry or personal defense handguns. The previously applied red dots were big and ungainly affairs with complex, often times, custom mounts utilized for a “gaming” application and less than hardy for everyday carry. This is not the case with the current RDS offerings coming on line.

The ever rising groundswell of RDS on handguns is evident with multiple manufacturers offering options of mounting RDS to the frames of their semiautomatic handguns. Most of these examples are large and put one in mind of an offensive handgun more than an inside-the-waistband concealed carry weapon. Other offerings are custom in nature in terms of configuration and cost. An emerging leader driving the concept both in theory and application producing red dot sights for defensive handguns is the Technical Services Division (TSD) of One Source Tactical. Gabe Suarez is both the owner of One Source Tactical and Suarez International a worldwide training organization. Mr. Suarez is a controversial figure within certain circles for various reasons; some of which are his “out of the box” thinking when it comes to personal defense methods and tools that best serve this mindset. No matter preconceived opinions, one can be sure that any ideas presented by Mr. Suarez and then backed up with products are well thought out and proofed during numerous training cycles and personal application in the field under the most rigorous conditions. TSD’s Advanced Combat Glock slide is an excellent example of this.

While models such as Smith&Wesson M&P and Springfield XD are offered via TSD, the starting point for TSD’s development of the red dot handgun began with the Glock – and for good reason. Many consider Glock the standard which fighting pistols are held based on capacity, weight/firepower ratio, ruggedness, and reliability. Glock handguns enjoy a reputation second to none. After exploding on the scene in the early 1980s with the Glock 17, Glock pistols quickly evolved into the benchmark for personal defense handguns. One Source Tactical literature is quick to point out that they were not the first to conceive the red dot mounted handgun. As alluded to earlier, competition circles have been using red dot sights on their handguns for a decade. Those rigs however use very large optics and as such, they were unsuitable for daily carry. One of the first credible accounts of actual use of a “mini” red dot sight on a defensive pistol is Kelly McCann, who used a RDS on his well worn and traveled Glock 19 pistol.

TSD and Suarez International first began work on the Advanced Combat Glock concept when seeking an answer to questions posed by many of their students as to how best to enhance what was for many their primary method of defense – the handgun. The obvious answer was training and practice. Suarez International will never be confused with advocating gear as a substitute for skill ingrained by training and practice. However, Gabe felt gear enhancement could assist in the quest. Proficiency with a handgun is one of the most perishable weapon skills and is impacted as we get older due to changes in our vision causing difficulty seeing iron sights and the target at the same time, or difficulty transitioning focus between sights and target. The solution arrived at was the same as most had already opted for with their rifles: add a red dot sight to your AK or M4 and your shooting skill generally improves in terms of accuracy, speed, and proficiency engaging moving targets. While a little more challenging due to size restrictions, this is what Suarez’s TSD decided on as the best course of action with handguns. What TSD finally arrived at with trial and error in product development not only assisted their students but enhanced the basic ability of the personal defense handgun platform as a whole.

Different packages are available from Suarez’s TSD consisting of customer’s slides being milled/modified to mount the Trijicon RMR to offering replacement slides pre-milled from Lone Wolf Distributing for mounting the TMR along with threaded barrels, all which simply install to an existing Glock frame.

When looking for a viable red dot sight, TSD examined several available optics. They wanted something with a bright, clearly defined dot that was visible in the greatest variety of lighting conditions. Another consideration was reasonable battery life and waterproof enough to be submerged in a bucket of water. No dials, adjustments, or on-off switches were another must as the possibility of the unit becoming mis-adjusted or turned off during holster carry was totally unacceptable. An RDS with a minimal footprint to fit as many different types of slides as possible was another desired feature so as not to confine the concept to a Glock-only idea. TSD obtained various samples for testing; while all of them share similar characteristics, all were found lacking except for one: the Trijicon RMR. Reflective of the real world input through their training division sister company; TSD desired a viable back up sighting system with the Trijicon RMR, because as tough as the RMR is, anything man-made can fail. After experimenting with various systems from dot and bars cut into the RMR unit, TSD opted for the simplest, yet most sound solution. The iron sights were left exactly where they were and just made taller as represented by available suppressor sights to use over the Trijicon RMR unit.

TSD equips the Advanced Combat Glock with extended height suppressor sights that serve multiple functions such as back-up iron sights if RMR goes down and assists in orientating red dot into user’s view in initial training.

Users of the TSD Advanced Combat Glock find that they no longer have to switch focus from target to sights and invariably eliminate the “front sight focus” so difficult for older shooters. They can now do as nature intends for them to do, focus on the threat. Moreover, because the indexing of a small red dot is far easier and sharper than the same task with three pieces of steel, they find they can take shots beyond what was considered possible with iron sights. Hitting steel at 100 yards on the first shot is very possible with the TSD modified RDS Glock, as well as running CQB drills at times that were considered impossible to achieve before – all simply because the concept uses the eyes in a more normal manner.

What sets apart the Suarez TSD effort with the RDS Advanced Combat Glock is the amount of product development, field trials, and cross over support it receives from its sister companies. For example, One Source Tactical already stocks real world carry applicable holsters along with literature and training for the Advanced Combat Glock. This is far different compared to other manufacturer’s more limited experimentation with the concept. TSD offers various packages to further cater to customer needs and budgets. One package includes a Lone Wolf Glock Slide milled to accept a Trijicon RMR of choice. The RMR is secured with two machine screws directly into the slide providing for RMR remaining solid through thousands of rounds and return to zero should you ever need to remove your sight. The kit includes all the slide parts (except barrel and recoil spring unit) and finished in a matte black moly finish. Another option is to send your Glock slide (any model) and TSD will cut a dovetail for the Trijicon RMR sight, or other red dot sight of your choice.

The Suarez Advanced Combat Glock as offered via One Source Tactical’s TSD shop is a simple modification to an existing Glock frame.
Range testing of the TSD Advanced Combat Glock took place at Echo Valley Training Center. Two main T&E priorities were the focus and to make sure that Glock reliability was not compromised and the Trijicon RMR as installed by TSD proved a worthy addition by increasing capability beyond what was expected from a normal iron sighted Glock. Of first concern was being able to find the Trijicon RMR dot just as quickly as what is expected with the traditional iron sight front post. Suarez’s TSD orientation of the suppressor style rear iron sights behind the RMR acts as both back-up sights and quickly orientates the shooter’s eye to RMR dot stationed above the front post. This uses existing skill sets of acquiring sights by placing the dot visually on top of the front sight requiring zero learning curve and matches same sight system most already have on their M4 or AK set up with co-witnessed sights (RDS between the irons). A little time on the range with the Suarez TSD modified Glock exploits that existing skill set to put the dot on target without any delay. Lastly, yet another advantage of the TSD decision to retain elevated irons around the RMR is that it provides instant verification of zero and if not there instant back up in the event the dot is out.

It was determined that the Trijicon RMR red dot sight assisted in engaging targets at close distances with the red dot easy to pick up rapidly. The RMR red dot sight offered the capability to engage multiple targets in rapid sequence compared to open sights, while at same time providing adequate accuracy out to at least hundred yards due to the red dot superimposing an aim point on the target while not totally obscuring the target due to the dot not being that large. As many “maturing” shooters can attest to, the single focus plane with the red dot is easier to shoot accurately than coordinating front and rear sights. The RMR sight withstood the recoil and heat generated by repeatedly long strings of fire. The RMR only weighs several ounces, which aids its ability to withstand the inertial forces experienced as the slide operates. The dual illumination model RMR was chosen so that there was reliance on batteries.

Range testing purposely included several types of holsters so as to determine if the TSD Advanced Combat Glock was worthy of being considered for daily concealed carry duties; not to mention reinforcing if the RMR dot was easily picked up as the Glock was extended at speed engaging either paper or steel targets. Standard belt, inside the waistband, and thigh holsters from Comp-Tac Victory Gear, BlackHawk, DeSantis, and Galco had no problems accommodating the RDS Glock. Other drills consisted of various scenarios engaging targets from behind cover or on the move. Magazine change drills were done for the dual purpose of getting a feel of manipulating the Glock with RDS installed and making sure the red dot was seamlessly picked up after the Glock was reloaded and back engaging targets. A standard 4th generation Glock 17 was used as a control to help better quantify if the RDS Advanced Combat Glock offered an advantage over standard iron sights. It was quickly determined that the RDS Glock has great potential in terms of accuracy, speed, and extending effective engagement distances. Perhaps counter-intuitively, CQB distances were more of a concern with how the TSD Advanced Combat Glock would perform. 5 yards and closer is the true realm of the defensive handgun for any practitioner of concealed carry.

As stated at the beginning of the article the use of the TSD RDS Glock as an everyday carry handgun is what sets it apart from other similar endeavors incorporating red dots on pistols. Point shooting with the TSD Glock is still very possible via using the RMR window as a ghost ring – albeit large ghost ring – if forced to react spontaneously to a threat. The RMR came into its own for precise fire at any range desired with placing the dot on the target and applying correct trigger control. Groups with the TSD Advanced Combat Glock were markedly smaller than the control G17 at all distances with the ability to hit steel man popper targets at 50 yards with amazing efficiency and even out to 100 yards with regularity. Speed drills involving plate racks and dueling trees were run with times more similar to a pistol caliber carbine than a handgun. The advantage offered by use of red dot sights in the competition environment is well known. The ability to place the RMR dot on the plate and not having to align front and rear irons proved much more adept at moving rapidly from plate to plate. Another subtle advantage of the Advanced Combat Glock concept is it allows for easy incorporation of a suppressor to the threaded Lone Wolf barrel if so inclined while maintaining the same sight picture.

Overall, it does indeed seem that the Advanced Combat Glock is a valid tool offering real world application and is beyond merely being considered a concept. Most practitioners of concealed carry employ handguns for 95% of their defensive needs with long arms such as shotguns and rifles not as readily accessible. The Suarez TSD Glock extends the effective range of the handgun beyond what most are capable with iron sights. As with most things involving weapons, especially ones that are pushing the envelope past “safe” norms such as the Advanced Combat Glock from One Source Tactical’s TSD shop, it will be individual bias and needs that determine if the Advanced Combat Glock is worthy of consideration.
