The new Magpul DT Carbine Stock is a drop-in replacement buttstock for AR15/M16/M4 carbines (or comparable platforms) equipped with Mil-Spec profile receiver extensions. It merges the best features of the SL and CTR product lines with its new dual tensioning technology, which provides greater strength and security for a more rugged and stable platform that’s easy to adjust.

The new Dual Tension system produces additional tension on the buffer tube, providing extra-tight lockup on the buffer tube to minimize movement between the stock’s lock pin and receiver extension. The result is a stock that is significantly more durable, reliable, and easier to adjust.

By Chris A. Choat

Aimpoint T-1 QD Mount from GG&G

The new Aimpoint Micro T-1 is a great lightweight tactical scope, but the scope design does not accommodate flip-up lens covers. It comes with bikini lens covers that are not easy to remove, keep in place or reinstall and are easily lost. GG&G has now come up with a solution that is so unique, it has a patent pending. That solution is an Accucam Quick Detach T-1 Mount that includes a built-in provision that provides for the installation of a flip-up lens cover for the ocular end. Additionally, the kit includes a specially prepared flip-up cover that fits the objective lens. The Aimpoint T-1 easily and solidly installs onto the GG&G Accucam QD mount with four 3mm screws. The installation wrench is included in the kit. The ocular end of the T-1 scope fits perfectly into the small integral lens cover flange, and while providing the means to mount a flip-up lens cover, it does not interfere with the field of view. The T-1 mount is manufactured from solid billet 6061 T6 aluminum and is Type III hard coat anodized matt black per mil-spec. The new GG&G T-1 QD Mount is manufactured to mount directly to the AR-15/M16 integral rail. This will position the red dot just above the front sight post, yet is low enough to co-witness with the GG&G MAD, A2 or Spring Actuated A2 BUIS. The Accucam Quick Detach Locking Lever System provides the shooter with a solid method to quickly install or remove the T-1 from the weapon in just a few seconds. Unlike other QD systems, it is fully adjustable to fit either Weaver or MIL-STD- 1913 rails. The unique design also allows you to adjust tension to accommodate out-of-spec or worn rails. The finger loop on the mount is easily operated even with a gloved hand and its rounded edges are snag proof. For more information on this new mount as well as their full line of innovative firearm accessories, please contact GG&G, Dept. SAR, 3602 E. 42nd Stravenue, Tucson, AZ 85713. Phone: (800) 380-2540. Fax: (520) 748-7582. Their website is www.gggaz.com.

Magpul Introduces New Polymer PMAG

The Magpul Polymer Magazine (PMAG) fits the M16 series and other 5.56×45 NATO compatible weapons. It features numerous enhancements intended to improve reliability, long-term storage, overall durability and is designed to fit 30 rounds without any need for downloading. A loaded magazine inserts and locks easily in a closed bolt weapon or may be stored for extended periods with the unique Impact Cover in place. The PMAG also features a special anti-tilt follower that prevents binding and improves feeding consistency. An optional MagLevel Round Indicator System allows for visual identification of round count on either side of the magazine. The Impact Cover snaps firmly onto the top of the PMAG via interlocking tabs (unlike aftermarket dust covers) and can be quickly removed with one hand.Fitted into place, the Impact Cover provides impact protection for the feed lips, prevents dirt/dust intrusion, and eliminates distortion of the feed lips caused by longterm loaded storage. When separated, the Impact Cover serves as a magazine tool that facilitates unloading and disassembly. A lanyard hole is included to prevent part loss. The proprietary Anti-Tilt Follower works in conjunction with the magazine body to stabilize the loaded round stack. The PMAG body features a constant internal curve (unlike metal magazines with a curve-to-straight transition) and allows for consistent round stack regardless of round count. This configuration prevents many of the common feeding malfunctions seen in other magazines such as nose-diving and bolt-over head failures. The optional MagLevel Round Indicator System tracks the amount of loaded rounds remaining in the magazine. This dual window system is visible from either side of the magazine allowing for ambidextrous function. Unlike transparent magazines without this feature, the MagLevel tracks all the loaded rounds in the magazine from first to last including the final remaining rounds hidden by the magazine well. For more information please contact Magpul Industries Corp., Dept. SAR, P.O. Box 17697, Boulder, CO 80308. Phone: (303) 828- 3460. Fax: (303) 828-3469.
CTK Precision Introduces New P3 Mono-Grip

CTK Precision has just introduced their new P3 Mono-Grip; a vertical foregrip and a monopod all in one. The P3 Mono-Grip turns a vertical foregrip into a shooting rest with a simple turn of the wrist. The new Mono-Grip provides a rock solid support, but still gives you the flexibility and versatility when you need it most allowing you to immediately pivot your firearm from left to right to get on target fast. It is CNC machined from billet aluminum for high strength and light weight (only 6.4 oz.). Other features include a hard coat anodized finish and flat sides for attaching pressure switches. A collapsed height of 4.75 inches and an extended height of 8 inches allow the use of a 30-round magazine. The spring loaded, pop out design adjusts from a grip to mono-pod in seconds. The durable rubber foot on the bottom resists slipping and will not harm finishes. The new Mono-Grip fits all Mil-Spec 1913 Picatinny rails. For more information, or to place an order, please contact CTK Precision, Dept. SAR, E5861 Herzberg Road, Marion, WI 54950. Phone: (715) 754-2891.
Laser Devices Introduces New High Power Tactical Lasers

Laser Devices, Inc., manufacturer of state-of-the-art visible and infrared aiming lasers, handheld and weapon-mounted tactical lights and small arms training systems is pleased to announce the new high power models of the Inline and Offset Tactical Aiming Lasers-ITAL-HP and OTAL-HP. These two new models feature a high power focusable/defocusable infrared (35mW) (835nM) beam. When focused, the beam provides pin-point aiming and pointing. When defocused, the beam spreads to provide supplemental infrared illumination for use with night vision devices. Each device is also equipped with a low-power setting to reduce the output power to an eye-safe level for use indoors, at close range and for force-on-force training exercises. A focusing ring on the front of the housing allows the user to focus or defocus the laser depending on their mission requirements. Defocusing the laser provides supplemental spotlight illumination to search shadowed areas. When the laser is focused to a point it can be used for precise aiming of the firearm or as a target pointer. The ITAL-HP and OTALHP are activated using a remote cable pressure pad switch. This electronic switch allows the user to operate the laser in a momentary mode by pressing and releasing the switch or to instantly activate the laser in a continuous ON mode by tapping the switch twice. A built-in safety circuit automatically turns the laser off after five minutes of continuous activation. Like the original ITAL and OTAL the ITAL-HP and OTAL-HP are manufactured to meet MIL-STD-810F requirements for reliability under the most adverse environmental conditions from desert heat to arctic cold. Fully waterproof to 3 meters and precision machined from hard anodized aircraft grade aluminum, the ITA-HP and TOTALHP are virtually indestructible. Powered with a single AA battery, these devices are lightweight (6.1 ounces) and compact (3.7 inches long and 1.75 inches wide). ITAHP and TOTAL-HP are available with two mounting options: Quick Release Throw Lever mount or Knurled Thumb Screw mount and supplied with one AA battery and a remote cable pressure pad switch. Optional accessories include pattern generating optics and a diffuser to provide wide area illumination at close range. ITAL-HP and OTAL-HP are powerful infrared laser devices that are only available to law enforcement and military agencies. In addition, they are subject to U.S. Export control through the International Trafficking in Arms Regulations. For more information, please contact them at Laser Devices, Inc., Dept. SAR, 2 Harris Court, Suite A-4, Monterey, CA 93040. Phone: (831) 373-0701. Fax: (831) 373-0903. Website: www.laserdevices.com.

Wilson Combat Introduces the Elite Tactical Magazine for the 1911

Wilson Combat, developer and builder of the legendary 47 Series magazine, announces a completely new 1911 magazine for serious, particularly combat oriented, shooters: the Elite Tactical Magazine, or ETM. Designed from the start as an 8- round magazine, it is the ultimate single stack magazine. The ETM features a heavier, stainless steel tube that’s more resistant to spreading and lip failure than any previous magazine, by any manufacturer. The re-designed spring is new and is more reliable and longer lasting than anything previously available. Numbered cartridge observation ports are located on the rear edge of each side of the tube, 1 through 10 numbers are etched on the base pad for tracking your magazines, and an innovative base pad allows for a longer tube and less spring compression, with a perfect flare for a sure grip when removing a magazine under adverse situations. Every component is either stainless steel or super tough nylon, making the ETM impervious to the elements. For more information on this new magazine, as well as their complete line of guns and accessories, please contact Wilson Combat/ Scattergun Technologies, Dept. SAR, 2234 County Road, Suite 719, Berryville, AR 72616. Phone: (870) 545-8618. Fax: (870) 545-3310.
SAVAGE ARMS
Rascal Target

Like the original Rascal, the single-shot rifle cocks by lifting the bolt and unloads easily—without pulling the trigger. The design also builds superior shooting skills thanks to full-size rifle features, including Savage’s user-adjustable AccuTrigger™ system. The platform offers far better safety, functionality and accuracy than competing designs. savagearms.com

Streamlight Inc. added two new low profile models to its extensive line of TLR rail-mounted tactical lights, the TLR-7 and the TLR-8, which also features an integrated red aiming laser. Extraordinarily lightweight, the new lights are among the smallest rail-mounted lights in the TLR line; each delivers 500 lumens for a variety of tactical uses.

Securely fitting to a broad range of weapons, the new TLR lights feature a one-handed, snap on and tighten interface that keeps hands away from gun muzzles when attaching or detaching them. The lights also include a safe off feature, locking them so they cannot be turned on accidentally. A key kit is included to securely fit each light to the broadest array of hand guns of any light on the market.

The TLR-7 offers two lighting modes, LED-Only or LED strobe, each with a run time of 1.5 hours. The TLR-8 also offers a 640-660nm red laser that increases the user’s ability to focus on a target. The light can be deployed in Laser-Only mode to keep the gun on target; in LED-Only mode to provide bright, focused light; or in dual mode using both light sources. Run times are 1.5 hours in LED-Only, LED and Laser, and strobe modes and 18 hours in Laser-Only mode. The new models feature an IPX7-rated design, making them waterproof to 1 meter for 30 minutes. streamlight.com

Cleaning and adjusting just got easier with Spyderco’s fine-tuned Delica 4 model’s screw construction. The fiberglass reinforced nylon handles come molded with Bi-Directional Texturing for preferred traction and improved ergonomics. Inside the handle dual skeletonized stainless steel liners make the knife stronger without adding weight and make an anchor for all external and internal components to attach through adding sturdiness and rigidity.

Their VG-10 blades are flat saber-ground with a stronger tip and larger 13mm opening hole. Added to the blade’s spine is slip resistant jimping. Phosphor bronze washers smooth out the open/close action and the clip is upgraded to a four-way tip-up, tip-down, left- or right-handed clip. spyderco.com

The possibilities are endless and you can share your shooting or hunting adventures with your friends and family or use it for learning purposes. Attachment of the adapter on the rifle scope is very quick and easy with a screw-on system. Placing a smartphone on the G-Line plate is also quick and secure. It doesn’t leave any marks on the phone and it is secure enough even to hold .50 BMG recoil.

G-Line Adapter comes in two sets: With a dedicated plate (smaller, designed for each smartphone) or with a Universal plate (bigger, but you can use it with any kind of Smartphone–even with protective cases) www.jtqgear.com.

Shown is the author firing the Battle Arms Development lightweight rifle. Notice the Fortis rail and SHIFT™ vertical grip. Also the Israeli made Ultimag polymer magazine.

By Christopher R. Bartocci

Throughout the industry, many companies have come up offering “enhanced” components for the AR15/M16 family of weapons. One such company has experienced rapid popularity and growth is Battle Arms Development, Inc. or commonly referred to as BAD or Battle Arms. The company was officially launched on Independence Day, July 4th, 2009 as an online retail store. This 100% made American product company was founded by George Huang and Roger Wang. George has multiple patents either granted or pending. George’s background is really not what you would think of when you think about a firearms or firearms component designer. His degree in Architectural Engineering from Penn State University is not strange but the fact that he worked for twenty years on projects such as Disney’s Studio Paris, Disney’s California Adventure, LEGOLAND, Universal Studios Island of Adventure, Galaxy Casino Macau and Thunder Valley Casino is a bit odd in this industry. As it would be, George wound up designing lightweight carbines and other advanced small arms components because George was an avid firearms enthusiast. One particular pet peeve of George’s was not being able to find adequate firearms tools or components that suited his needs, so he went on to design his own. In 2013 George retired from the entertainment industry and went to work full time on BAD. He now spends full time designing the next level of AR components and other small arms products. One of George’s short term goals is to build a factory rifle with 95% of its components designed and manufactured by BAD, Inc. He is
well on his way.

Shown is the right side of the BAD Lightweight Rifle. Also take note of the Fortis charging handle, Magpul BUIS Offset rear sight, Strike Industries polymer ejection port cover , BAD-ASS (Ambidextrous Safety System) safety and BAD-EMR (Enhanced Magazine Release). Inserted is the Israeli Ultimag magazine.

The first product introduced by the newly formed Battle Arms Development Company was the BAD-T1 “The Armorer” multi-tool and gauge for the M14/M1A/M1 rifle. This multi tool is manufactured from 41L40 chrome-moly steel and brass and weighs .42 pounds. It actually fits in the storage compartment in the USGI M14 buttstock and commercial M1A rifles. This is truly a multi-tool which includes: trigger guard take down, .30 cal muzzle wear gauge, throat erosion gauge, M1 Garand throat erosion gauge, trigger group takedown tool, extractor removal tool, 3/8” hex gas nut wrench, bolt roller greaser, 1/4” hex socket for standard bits, gas piston holder, rear sight screw driver with torque handle, large flat head screw driver and flash hider alignment gauge, to just name a few of its functions. This product was quickly followed up by the BAD-T3 & BAD-T4 Gas Cylinder Lock Wrench for the M14/M1A/M1 Garand and Smith Enterprises Gas Lock Front Sight.

The next and perhaps the flagship product for Battle Arms Development, Inc. is the Ambidextrous Safety Selector BAD-ASS and the Combat Ambidextrous Safety Selector or BAD-CASS that is available in selective fire version. These are made in the traditional 0°-90° throw or the 0°- 50° short-throw variations. In recent years the short-throw lever has gained popularity. Lower receivers come marked for the use with this lever. These high quality components are manufactured from billet steel bars on a CNC Swiss machine. Some models are finished with manganese phosphate. The material was recently upgraded to 416 stainless steel for the center of the safety. Although this costs two times more than previously, it is worth the cost. This is coated in a PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) ZrN process with a gold finish which is ultra hard and lubricious to give the safety its buttery smooth operation. The levers are held on each side by a T10 torx screw. The levers can be changed to one of nine that are offered by BAD including shorter levers, crank levers and also different color levers. This popular accessory has been offered by Original Equipment Manufacturers such as War Sports Industries, Rainer Arms, Spike’s Tactical, San Tan Tactical, Remington Arms, Wilson Combat, Adams Arms, Aero Precision, Seekins Precision and Midwest Industries.

Left side view of the BAD Lightweight rifle. Notice the Magpul MIAD pistol grip, Seekins Precision Enhanced bolt catch, Norgon Ambidextrous magazine release, Aimpoint Micro T1 optic, BAD-ASS (Ambidextrous Safety System) and Israeli made Ultimag magazine.

The BAD-EPP (Enhanced Pivot Pin) and BAD-ETP (Enhanced Takedown Pin or collectively called the BAD-EPS (Enhanced Pin Set) are another popular offering. These pins fit all mil-spec lower receivers and have a patent pending pivot pin and takedown pin design, improved gripping surface and pull strength without the use of oversized heads. The low profile pin heads have low drag and have a lower profile than mil-spec pin heads. The pin tips are extended +0.030 over the mil spec pins which noticeably aids in pushing/pulling the pins, without any undue protrusion. There are bullet tip guides on the left side of the pins to aid in pushing out tight pins. These pins come with KNS hardened stainless steel detents, 17-7 nickel plated stainless steel springs and one high strength neodymium magnet for hassle free magnet assisted installation of the Enhanced Pivot Pin. These pins are also offered in Titanium and come in raw finish as well as matte black IONBOND PVD finish.

Shown is the left side of the rifle built with the BAD forged lower receiver. Notice the VLTOR VIS-KM9 KeyMod upper receiver/free float handguard, Faxon Firearms stainless steel fluted match barrel with VLTOR flash suppressor and VLTOR Modstock.

In August of 2014, Battle Arms Development Company entered the AR-receiver market with the introduction of their BAD-15 forged lower receiver. BAD did not want to come out with just another copy of the lower, only if they could present an improved one. The receiver is made from high quality aerospace grade 7075 T6 aluminum raw forging. No seconds or improperly heat treated forgings accepted. The magazine well is cut by way of ultra precise wire EDM process for consistency and reliability rather than traditional broach or CNC cut. This is an expensive enhancement which is usually a 30 minute process on a wire EDM machine that bills at $100 to $120 per hour. This costs more than some finished receivers on the market. The magazine well consistency will be identical from receiver number 1 to receiver number 10,000. Precision reamed-to-size holes for the pivot pin, takedown pin, hammer pin, trigger pin and safety selector holes, these are not simply drilled to size. The receiver extension threads are machined with high precision and low stress helical threading rather than drilled and tapped. The logo is 3D high power, deep laser engraved on a $150,000 German laser engraving machine that truly engraves, not superficially etches or burns only through the anodizing. Text and fire markings are engraved prior to anodizing and are razor sharp image quality. The caliber is marked “Multi” for build versatility. Legacy selector stops are removed. Pictogram selector markings are done for both 90° or 50° short-throw safeties. The receiver has a deep beveled magazine well and all sharp edges are de-burred by hand. The receiver is definitely a step above the rest in both fit and finish.

Shown is the Blitzkrieg Hydraulic Buffer being removed from the BAD Lightweight lower receiver. Notice the SABERTUBE™ receiver extension. Attached is the BAD-LBS or Lightweight Butt Stock to the rear of the receiver extension, BAD-ASS (Ambidextrous Safety System) safety and BAD-EMR (Enhanced Magazine Release).

Battle Arms Development also offers a lightweight receiver set, the BAD556-LW. This comes with matching upper and lower receivers. Both are precision machined via CNC from solid billets of 7075 T6 aircraft grade aluminum. The lower receiver weighs just 6.84 ounces and the upper 6.31 ounces. Both receivers are patent pending. Both receivers have a MIL-A-8625F, Type III, Class 2, hard anodized flat black finish and laser engraved logos. Both receivers are compatible with any industry standard upper or lower receiver. All sharp edges are de-burred by hand. The lower receivers use pictograms for safety/selector markings and are set up for both 90° and 50° BAD-ASS/BAD-CASS selector levers. The magazine well is flared and beveled for easy magazine changing. The bolt catch has a screw instead of a pin, making for easier, non-marring installation. The rear takedown pin is held by a screw as well. The detent pin spring is trimmed down, inserted and the screw holds it in the receiver. The trigger guard is integral with the lower receiver. The upper receiver has machined T-marks and M4 extended feed ramp cuts. To save on weight, the upper receiver does not accept a forward assist. Not only is this good for weight reduction but a forward assist is not necessary on the rifle. Gene Stoner himself testified in front of a congressional defense subcommittee (Ichord Hearings) in 1968 to the fact it was not necessary nor desirable. If the bolt does not lock, a round should never be forced into the chamber. It should be removed. By forcing it into the chamber you are asking for bigger problems.

Along the same lines with the concept for a lightweight rifle, BAD introduced a new concept in a stock for the AR platform. It is the BAD-LBS-MIL or Lightweight Butt Stock – military specification receiver extension. This is the first of its kind. It’s such a simple idea to have a “Fixed” stock to attach to the standard carbine 2, 4 or 6 position receiver extension (buffer tube). The BAD-LBS-MIL uses an available component and allows the end user to switch out their heavier stock for a lightweight 3.0 oz butt plate (probably at least half the weight of a standard stock) for specific needs and to have the ability to return to a telescopic stock. With the use of heavy body armor, the extended stock is less practical. The LBS can even be placed on a longer A5 length receiver extension. The BAD-LBS-MIL is patent pending.

To go along with the BAD-LBS is the optional SABERTUBE™ receiver extension which is thicker in diameter than the Mil-Spec receiver extension for added strength and is dimpled to help reduce the weight. On average the SABERTUBE™ is .2 oz lighter than the Mil-Spec receiver extension. The SABERTUBE™ does not require a heavy steel receiver extension nut nor receiver extension end plate. It is also 1-inch longer than the Mil-Spec receiver extension but has better length of pull. BAD calls it a mid-length and a one size fits “most”. The SABERTUBE™ and the BAD-LBS are also sold as a kit.

Used on the BAD Lightweight barrel is the VG6 Epsilon muzzle brake. This is an extremely effective muzzle brake. Also notice the Magpul MBUS Offset front sight mounted to the Fortis Switch™ rail system.

Along with the lightweight, there is a really nice Titanium gas block, the BAD-LGB-Ti-625. Based on research, this 0.48 oz gas block is the lightest in the industry. This is actually lighter than the gas tube. The gas block is .625 inch diameter and is held in place by two hex screws. The one sent for test and evaluation is raw titanium.

As far as accessories go, another interesting gadget is the BAD-EMR or the Enhanced Magazine Release button. These are CNC milled from a billet of 7075 T6 aluminum. It is offered in anodized black, red, OD green, silver/clear, yellow lime, blue and light bronze finish. Also offered are Cerakote coated options in Magpul FDE and Smith & Wesson Red.

Battle Arms Development in collaborative efforts with Northtech Defense (NTD) have produced the LIGHTRIGID™ line of barrels. These are .223 Wylde chambered barrels (1 turn in 8 inch Right Twist) manufactured with a manufacturing process developed by BAD and NTD from tooling, gun drilling, contouring, reaming, etc. Every BAD barrel is double heat-treated/stress relieved, cryogenically treated and is meant to be a competition grade barrel. The barrels are dimpled to assist in location of the gas port, with the port on the gas block. The LIGHTRIGID™ line of barrels have a .625” diameter gas block journal and a mid length gas system designed around the BAD light rifle concept. As of this writing the barrels are offered in 14.5 and 16 inches. Soon to be released are 10.5 and 18 inch versions. Currently on the drawing board are .750 inch diameter gas block journal barrels with both rifle and carbine gas systems. Other calibers are in the works as well, including .308 Win, .300 Blackout and 6.8mm SPC II. BAD guarantees the sub-MOA accuracy capability of the barrel. Of course you cannot guarantee the shooter’s skill, proper installation and proper ammunition. BAD achieves consistent dime size accuracy at 100 yards, according to Huang.

Shown is the Fortis HAMMER™ charging handle with a black Teflon finish. This aggressive and robust charging handle is easy to manipulate with and without gloves. It is made from a billet of 7075 T6 aluminum.

Two rifles were built using Battle Arms Development components. One was based on the BAD lightweight rifle concept which utilized the billet receiver set, barrel and every component in the BAD Product line. The second was built on the forged lower receiver with BAD components.

Beginning from the rear of the Lightweight BAD build is the SABERTUBE™ pistol receiver extension tube with QD Endplate and BAD LBS Lightweight Buttstock. This was a very lightweight setup compared to the norm. Inside is a standard carbine buffer with a Blitzkrieg KynSHOT hydraulic buffer (P/N RB5000). This author has been testing these buffers for quite some time and has had very good experience with them. They do slightly lighten the field recoil impulse. Due to the light weight of the rifle this appeared to be a good fit. The BAD-EPS (Enhanced Pin Set) was used on the lower receiver. Both the rear takedown pin as well as the front pivot pin are black and well made. The Magpul MIAD pistol grip is this author’s pistol grip of choice. Normally the backstrap has the beavertail on it but due to the shape of the receiver the straight backstrap insert had to be used. The Norgon ambidextrous magazine is used along with the BAD-EMR (Enhanced Magazine Release) button in the Black variation. On the other side of the receiver is the Seekins Precision Enhanced Bolt Catch. This had a larger surface with dimples making for better no-slip surface. The trigger chosen for this rifle is the Hipertouch® EDT. This trigger is their Enhanced Duty Trigger. It has 2-user adjustable trigger weights which are changed by replacing the hammer spring. They are 4 1/2 and 5 1/2 pound trigger springs. There is a “hint” of creep, slightly shorter travel to break at the moment of reset with a very clean break. The trigger also has 25 to 50% faster hammer lock-up, Mil-Spec strike energy. This trigger is US Patent pending.

The Israeli made polymer Ultimag. Shows some similarities to the Magpul Maglevel magazine but a totally different feel. This magazine proved to be completely reliable in all testing thus far.

The charging handle is the FORTIS HAMMER™ charging handle which manufactured from a billet of 7075 T6 aluminum. This particular one is black Teflon. This is a robust charging handle designed to be used with and without gloves. There are grooves that work great with gloves yet do not cut up your hand. The charging handle has a roll pin/latch design key to stop the stress on the roll pin. The bolt carrier group is from WMD and is NiB-X coated. The carrier is polished prior to coating for a very smooth and slippery feeling.

The upper receiver has the BAD lightweight upper with the 16” BAD ULTRAMATCH LIGHTRIGID™ barrel chambered in .223 Wylde. This barrel is manufactured from 416R stainless steel with a 1 turn in 8 inch twist and a .625” gas block diameter which is dimpled for the BAD titanium gas block. This barrel uses a midlength gas system. It is cryogenically treated, double heat treat stress relieved, magnetic particle inspected and weights 24.6 ounces. The muzzle brake is the VG6 Epsilon stainless steel muzzle break. The handguard is the Fortis Manufacturing SWITCH system released in 2014. This 14.75 inch, 9.8 ounce rail was designed to have ease of switching from one configuration to another without a complete upper. One rail could be configured with an optic and bipod and another just with an optic and flashlight. This also makes for ease of cleaning and easy access to an adjustable gas block. Having multiple handguards eliminated the need for multiple uppers. This handguard is manufactured from 6061 T6 aluminum and is a truly unique handguard.

Also added to the rifle is an Aimpoint Micro T-1 2 MOA red dot sight and Magpul MBUS PRO Offset front and rear sights. At the same time this rifle was being tested, a new magazine was received. The Israeli Ultimag polymer magazine which is imported by FAB Defense. Very similar to the Magpul Maglevel magazine, but in its own way different. The texture and feel are quite different. The window on both sides is larger. The magazine holds 30 rounds and is Patent Pending. This magazine is very high quality and very durable.

The second rifle uses the Battle Arms Development forged lower receiver. This receiver is also equipped with the BAD-EMR, BAD-EPS, BAD-ASS, Norgon ambidextrous magazine release and Seekins Precision Enhanced bolt catch. Added to this is the VLTOR receiver extension and buffer and Modstock. Then a Magpul MIAD pistol grip and Geissele High Speed National Match trigger group complete the setup. This trigger is designed for high power match rifle competition. The trigger’s adjustability, lighter 1st and 2nd stage pull weights and fast lock-up time enhances the trigger control and accuracy while the hammer spring provides uniform primer ignition for more consistent bullet velocity.

Close-up view of the receivers you can clearly see the BAD forged lower receiver, BAD-EPS, BAD-ASS, BAD-EMR and Magpul MIAD grip. Also notice the Bushnell AR Optic 3-9×40 mm scope on a 1-inch Aero Precision mount. There is a ARMS #40L rear back up sight.

The upper receiver on this rifle is the VLTOR VIS-KM9 with Keymod. The upper with integral rail weighs 21.4 oz with a handguard length of 8.82 inches. The overall length is 16.49 inches with an interior diameter of 1.25 inches. The upper has a forward assist, fired cartridge case deflector and ejection port dust cover. The lower handguard is removable for cleaning and also an M203 grenade can be attached. Any Keymod rail panel may be used. The receiver is manufactured from 6061 T6 forging and the handguard is made from the same material but is an extrusion. They upper receiver assembly is hard coat anodized, black per MIL-A,8625 TYPE III Class 2. The charging handle, also manufactured by VLTOR, is the Gunfighter ambidextrous charging handle which is manufactured from a forging of 7075 T6 aluminum. The extended latches are internally redesigned to direct the force off the roll pin and into the body of the charging handle during “support hand only” manipulations, making the charging handle stronger and less prone to breakage. The bolt carrier group is a standard LMT bolt carrier group.

The barrel is manufactured by Faxon Firearms. This 2 pound, 18 inch heavy fluted barrel is chambered in 5.56mm with a 1 turn in 8 inch twist and utilizes a midlength gas system. The barrel is manufactured from 416R stainless steel and button rifled. The inside of the barrel is raw stainless with the outside being matte blasted. The gas block has a diameter of .750 inches. The barrel features M4 extended feed ramps on the barrel extension and an 11-degree target crown. Quality control testing includes magnetic particle inspection and air-gauge testing. These barrels are manufactured in-house at the Faxon Firearms plant in Cincinnati, Ohio. Attached to the muzzle is a VLTOR flash supressor.

Both rifles were test fired with IMI 5.56x45mm M193 ammunition. This is Israeli made 55gr full metal jacket ammunition. Each was tested with 200 rounds of this ammunition with no malfunctions. The Lightweight rifle was tested at 25 yards off hand, due to the Aimpoint optic, which was designed for close range. With the combination of VG6 muzzle brake and the hydraulic buffer the rifle did not move off target. Quick and accurate follow up shots were easy. Off-hand groups were consistently under 1 inch. The second rifle with the heavy barrel was tested for accuracy with Black Hills Ammunition Mk262 Mod1 ammunition, this 77gr OTM is the standard which any 5.56mm/.223 Rem cartridge is compared for accuracy. At 100 yards all groups were sub MOA.

Battle Arms Development is without at doubt one of the industry leaders in high quality enhanced components and is very quickly becoming a respected manufacturer of complete firearms. As of this writing, short of a bolt carrier group, BAD manufactures enough components to build a complete rifle. BAD President George Huang assures SAR that many new products are on the way. This author will be anxiously waiting to see what comes next.

A Marine rifle team leader scopes out suspicious activity while on a dismounted foot patrol in Nadi Ali district, Helmand province. This Marine has the Viking Tactical Two Point sling and has opted for a Magpul angled grip, which he isn’t even utilizing to balance his rifle. He has also opted for placing his magazines on a patrol belt instead of his front to leave his chest free. This allows for a much better prone position.

By Miles Vining

(Editor’s note: Marines are not authorized to carry unauthorized equipment. Sounds obvious, but the way it’s worked in combat from history’s day one is that the guys will choose what they like, and will always try to solve problems. SAR is neither condoning this nor encouraging this, but the reality is that combat use by Marines gives some interesting feedback for the potential buyer of products. The author is a true “gun guy” and we found his observations quite enlightening).

Almost more so than the traditional hunting bolt action rifle area of interest, today the AR or “Black Rifle” accessory business is huge and booming in the United States. The majority of these parts are intended for the civilian and law enforcement markets, which is ironic considering that this spawned out of the M16A2/A4/ M4 primarily in use by the U.S. Armed Forces. Some products are highly regarded and raved about in the States by civilians but reviews of how these products actually work in combat are very few in number. Peaceful conditions or competitions are quite contrasted when actually used under fire.

The author’s issued M4/M203A2 with all the extra attachments taken off minus the LMT buttstock. Currently shown with the Two Point Vickers Tactical sling because of the garrison status, there would normally be a One Point attachment clip with the adapter. One can clearly see where the right side of the adapter is worn down almost to nothing and the opposite side is brand new. This is because the previous user was right handed and used a metal clip instead of a plastic one. The black adaptor to the left of the RCO is a Wilcox mount and is used for clipping a thermal sight called a UTM to be used in line with the RCO. These were extremely essential to night operations, complimenting Kevlar mounted PVS14s.

Between the months of September 2013 to May 2014, the author was a Marine Infantryman with 1st Battalion, 9th Marines, deployed to Helmand Province, Afghanistan. There the battalion used helicopter borne raids, dismounted and mounted patrols to take the fight to the Taliban. At this stage of the war most of the missions were centered around going into far off districts to hit Taliban command and control centers, and to protect the security of BLS (Bastion, Leatherneck, Shrobak, three combined bases that are ISAF’s front line in Helmand Province). These weren’t the days of Operation Mushtarak and pushing through the stronghold of Marjah, or the deadly districts of Sangin and Musaqula in which battalions of Marines fought the Taliban on a daily basis. But there was plenty of kinetic action with 1/9 in which the unit was engaged.

The following review of certain accessory items is strictly the opinion of this author. Some may agree or disagree. Regardless, it is worth repeating that these are the opinions of one soldier. This review is going to be on items that are T/O to an 0311 as well as items that the author personally supplemented to help in combat operations. Being well versed in the AR market, the author had some of the accessories that are often sought after in the civilian world and used them on deployment.

The author was issued an M4 carbine made by Colt. All Marine M4s are made by Colt and our M16A4s were on the FN Herstal contract. His billet was that of a team leader and the company made it a policy to get M4s to every Marine in a leadership position, as well as a new “Grenadier” position. As an SOP, a T/O Marine fire team has the team leader with an M4, a gunner with a SAW (although this is changing to the M27 IAR since its adoption in 2011), a grenadier with an M203A2 40mm
grenade launcher, and a point rifleman with an M16A4. But this changes from unit to unit to contend with operational tempo. For example in my former company it would be the team leader with an M203A2 but new TTPs switched it to a separate grenadier Marine.

A squad leader with 1/9 takes a break while on a dismounted foot patrol. Notice the Magpul grip on the rifle as well as a loaded cartridge in the pen flare launcher on the reverse side of the weapon. He has taken the Vickers Tactical sling off in favor of more maneuverability on patrol. A standard Marine loadout is to have 7 magazines, with one inserted. Usually these are mounted on the front portion of the flak jacket as is shown here but ultimately it is up to what that individual Marine feels comfortable with.

Trijicon RCO

The Trijicon 4x Rifle Combat Optic (RCO, aka the ACOG) is a phenomenal scope. The way we operate in theater, we cannot afford to be gentle with our weapons as much as we care for and constantly clean them. They are going to get dirty and they are going to get tossed around in MRAPs and MATVs over extremely intense terrain. They are going to be launched skyward when IEDs detonate. This harsh treatment is going to take place and it’s all part of the work hazard.

Nevertheless, our RCOs are extremely rugged and I have yet to see one break. They might shift their zero every once in a while if they take a severe beating but it isn’t by that much. To counter this we have held a BZO range every month in country and this has helped alleviate that wandering zero problem. As for the fighting, the 4x magnification is outstanding. The ROE has become increasingly restrictive every year the war has dragged on and making sure the enemy to be engaged has a weapon or not has been a strategic priority for ISAF forces. An EOTech would have been great in Iraq but most engagements in Helmand take place at 300 meters or further. As for the actual RCO, there’s some different uses of it.

Many RCOs are being issued with the plastic honey comb designated as the “Anti Reflection Device” or the ARD. The effectiveness of this piece is a moot point. Our dismounted patrols are usually 5 or more Marines per patrol. Already a huge target, spread out 15-20 meters apart, a little reflection from an RCO is not going to add to this target rich environment for the Taliban. Snipers have a much better use for this device as any target indicator from a hide site can mean the team is compromised. The plastic piece is held into the RCO by a taut elastic band wrapped around the base of the RCO. Eventually it gets knocked out of alignment and completely off and sometimes lost. Although it is a great idea of an addition to the weapon, its actual use through experience somewhat negates it entirely.

Insight AN PEQ 16B LED

Back in the early Iraq War days, Marines were issued the AN PEQ 1, basically just a IR and visible laser emitting module. This was upgraded in the early 2000s to the AN PEQ 15, which was smaller, had some more enhanced features when it came to adjusting lasers, and had the option of different types of IR lasers. Usually this was issued along with a massive Surefire flashlight. Then the AN PEQ 16 came around and it included a white light LED which made the separate weapon mounted Surefire light not required. Some units still use the PEQ 15, namely rear echelon units and Sniper Platoons. For a Scout Sniper Platoon, the PEQ 15 is favored because of its contoured design to the handguards, less weight and battery requirement, and because Snipers are generally not searching houses so don’t need the LED light as much as a line platoon that is constantly searching dark compounds or clearing buildings at night. The addition of the LED made rifles lighter as the flashlight was not present but one of the downsides is that the light itself takes up a lot of battery power. The PEQ 15 ran on a single 123 volt battery while the PEQ 16 runs on two, and even with this added power, the light will drain it rather quickly in a matter of a few hours. But if the user doesn’t use the light and just uses the IR or visible lasers, the unit will last a good while, a month or so of constant use on patrol.

Both models came with a slot that a remote ON/OFF button could be attached to. Marines generally attached this button to the magazine well via Velcro, directly in front of the trigger for quick activation. Holding down the PEQ 16 ‘s ON/OFF button will place it in momentary mode, while double tapping it will turn it to constant on and single tapping will turn it off.

The most vulnerable part about the PEQ 16 itself is the LED. Although there is a cover affixed by an elastic cord that protects the lens, this cord often breaks or rips off after prolonged periods of time and thus leaving the lens or bulb open to being smashed. Replacement of said part is easy to take care of at an armory, but if Marines are at a remote Patrol Base, this can take weeks of waiting to get to an armory in the rear at a FOB. Since the PEQ 16 has been in use for some time, various SL3 gear is in place to support it such as laser boresights and target sheets. These sheets are placed 10 meters away from the shooter in a prone position and have markers on them for various weapons

Blue Force Tactical Sling

The Blue Force Vickers Tactical Two Point sling was introduced to the Marine Corps via a back door in the form of the M27 Infantry Automatic Rifle (IAR). The Marine Corps liked it so much with the M27 that it was decided to adopt it en masse. Before this Two Point, the Marine Corps was using the Three Point combat sling, which in the authors opinion was perfectly fine and was better than the Vickers Tactical. The Vickers Tactical is very thin, holds the rifle too tight to the body and almost impossible to wear while actually on patrol with gear on. In fact some Marines forget the sling altogether and go unslung when on patrol. The benefits it does have are in the quick adjustment tab and the quick release clip on the stock. Something the author did while in Camp Leatherneck was he utilized the sling as a Two Point as per regulations. But when out on patrol, he took the sling off the weapon and married the clip on the rifle to a clip he had on his plate carrier, turning it into a One Point. This worked extremely well while on patrol.

Magpul BAD Lever

In the current market there are a number of bolt catch assistance devices that make operation of an AR much quicker than using the traditional palm slap to the side of the weapon. The specific aftermarket accessory that the author chose before the deployment was the infamous Magpul BAD lever, for no particular reason than its reputation and simplicity. The author locked it on the bolt catch at the start of the eight months and there was no need to retighten it as it didn’t come loose during the duration. While clearing the weapon it was especially useful as when all our gear is on, manipulation of just about anything at all becomes cumbersome and the ability to lock the bolt back or send it home with one hand was very helpful. During firefights was when it really shined. With one particular fight, one of the author’s magazines was faulty and caused a double feed – a very bad situation when rounds are cracking overhead. With the BAD lever the author simply locked the bolt back, dropped the magazine, swept the two rounds out and inserted a fresh source of ammunition, getting the rifle back in the fight.

Badger Ordnance Charging Handle

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the standard charging handle. The author chose a larger one though out of convenience, and personal preference. A technique mostly used in the infantry is to use the palm or fingers of the left hand to rack the charging handle to the rear. This proves a lot faster than indexing the T shaped handle with two fingers and breaking a cheek wield. When only using the palm, a shooter can also stay on target and movement of the weapon is minimized.

There are a number of companies that make oversize charging handles. The author went with Badger Ordnance because they have a good reputation and used some of their accessories before in the scope rings on the M40A5 sniper rifle. The only issue would be that the square design of the handle sometimes gets snagged on bits and pieces of gear but this is rare.

Usually issued by itself, the unit received a Picatinny rail adapter as is pictured so the devices could be mounted to the rifle’s forward rails. The actual cartridge is a silver block the size of a .308 round that screws on to the front of the launcher and is fired by pulling back on the tab and released. The propellant ignites and has a range of about 100-200 meters. The empty cartridge is unscrewed and a fresh one is mounted.

One Point Adapter by Viking Tactical

One of the author’s biggest pet peeves in the service was that of using One Point slings on M4s mostly but also M16s. When used correctly, the One Point sling is an awesome addition to a carbine sized weapon. But when used incorrectly, it can damage the weapon, and make a shooter complacent. The specific problem with One Point slings is the adapter to the weapon. Since the service M16/M4 was not produced to take a One Point, Marines have to use adapters that usually fit around the buffer tube of an M4 near the charging handle. These adapters are great for a standard M4 type carbine but Marines use more than the standard M4 – they attach PEQ16s, RCOs, pen flares, and M203 grenade launchers to it, which adds more weight than the adapter was designed for.

Over time, some adapters slide up the buffer tube from constantly being pulled down by all the weight. The other problem with these adapters is that many Marines don’t care to think of how they are attaching their slings to the weapon. Most One Point slings are attached via a metal clip. Bear in mind the adapter is made out of metal, and the rifle is constantly pivoting on that adapter because that is how the sling is connected to it. All that metal on metal friction does is grind away the adapter and in some extreme cases cuts through the entire swivel ring and makes it useless. The answer to this dilemma is to use cloth or some soft but tough material that won’t create friction. BOTach makes a plastic covered metal soft loop that attaches quite well. The author used plastic clips for the connection between sling and rifle. These served extremely well for the duration of the deployment.

Hogue AR Pistol Grip

The stock M16/M4 pistol grip is a simple and rugged part of the rifle that has worked flawlessly since Vietnam and continues to do so. As for personal preference, it is not a grip that the author favors in terms of weapon handling. It is much too narrow and rigid for the author’s tastes. Because of this he ordered a Hogue pistol grip with beavertail extension. Between Ergo, Magpul, and Hogue there were a host of choices in regards to a grip but the author went with Hogue because of their superior reputation in quality. The most attractive feature was the palm swells and finger grooves. As mentioned previously, the stock grip is rather narrow and the Hogue’s larger size and palm swells greatly improved handling. Stock grips have only one finger groove whereas the Hogue has three, thus much improving purchase on it while on the move or firing.

Although the Hogue is certainly a worthy grip, most Marines that do modify their pistol grips opt out with a Magpul grip due to its mainstream popularity. For personal preference, the Magpul grip is a fine grip in its own right but it just comes down to what is most useful to the individual shooter.

The author’s M4/M203A2 fully put together. The pen flare launcher is mounted on the opposite side of the weapon. The rubber membrane around the RM Equipment grip is a bicycle inter tube, placed there for a more secure grasp. The RCO has its ARD taken off as it just gets lost or broken while on operations.

Grip Pod and Issue Broomhandle

The grip pod was designed with good intentions and is a good concept by combining a grip and a bipod so accuracy can be improved fleet wide instead of limiting bipod mounted weapons to just designated marksmen or machine
gunners. Unfortunately, in reality that does not play out and the author has a very negative opinion of the grip pod. It’s too large/bulky as a grip and too fragile as a bipod. It’s absolutely great if all a shooter is doing is gently setting the weapon on level ground while he’s attending to some trivial matter. But using it as a legitimate shooting support, in the rough and unforgiving space of a live fire range or in a gunfight, it is worthless and the legs will eventually break – and it is not adjustable for height. The author has no idea what the rage is with these things in the AR market in the States. But they seem to have caught on because they’re in such wide use by the military.

While on the topic of bipods, not many infantrymen use bipods with their M16A4 service rifles. But on designated marksmen rifles such as the 5.56x45mm Mk12 or M27 IAR, Harris bipods are issued with the rifles and these are especially useful. The only problem with them is that Harris bipods are designed for a specific role and that is to be used with long range rifles that are often carefully taken care of. When they are with a weapon such as the M27 that sees rough use, they start breaking down, screws come loose,
and springs wear.

The standard issue grip (otherwise known as a “broomhandle”) is prefect for operational use; it locks in tight from the bottom instead of from the side and provides a good basic grip. Some of the other commercially used grips in use by Marines are the Magpul MOE, the Viking Tactical grip, or discontinued M249 SAW forward grips are somewhat popular. Some Marines try the Magpul angled grip although it doesn’t suit the type of missions that infantry Marines in Helmand are tasked with. This grip is aimed at competition shooters or urban combat uses where when the rifle is pulled out it is used specifically for this intended purpose and put back. Infantry Marines take their rifle everywhere they go, and spend most of the time outside the wire patrolling from checkpoint to checkpoint with maybe kinetics occurring some of the time while on patrol.

LMT SOPMOD Butt Stock

The LMT stock was originally produced for use by Navy SEALs in the Naval Special Warfare Center in Crane, Indiana. LMT started producing it commercially and it has taken off from there. For simplicity and ruggedness, this stock beats out every other commercial M4 stock on the market, even the excellent Magpul ones. The best part about it is the extended cheek piece and narrow butt plate so it can fit snugly between a shoulder and body armor. Most M4 stocks, to include the issued ones, lack an extended cheek piece and this makes it hard to acquire a solid cheek weld. This isn’t an issue with the SOPMOD stock. All the British Special Operations troops used these stocks on their LMT or Diemaco M4 carbines. This is where some of the Marines got them from as they would have extra and would trade or give them to Marines occasionally.

RM Equipment M203 Grip

This grip doesn’t increase the effectiveness of the M203 40mm grenade launcher but is more for ease of handling. Carrying an M4/M203A2 is simple enough but it is nice to have a solid grip when on patrol or walking around a base overseas. The RM Equipment one is very well made and extremely durable. The profile of an M203 is already low enough that adding a Picatinny rail to it and then a broomhandle grip is almost absurd in how much lower that sticks out. RM Equipment’s grip latches right on to the launcher’s ribs and is short but not short enough that a shooter’s hand isn’t gripping air.

Survival Pen Flare Launcher

The pen flare launcher isn’t necessarily a true weapon accessory but due to operational requirements, it was adopted by Marines in 1/9. The reason for this was because of the strategic problems faced by ISAF forces at this late stage of the war. Zero tolerance for civilian casualties became an absolute necessity because of the Bi-Lateral Security Agreement between the government of Afghanistan and the United States.

As a stand-alone launcher, the MK31 is an excellent tool; it fires pen flare cartridges out to around 100-200 meters. Its primary intent was as a survival signaling device but 1/9 began using it as an Escalation of Force tool. But when mounted on a combat rifle they become banged up rather quickly as they are everywhere the rifle goes. In its survival role it is stored away in an escape and evade kit and only taken out
when necessary.

Magazines

Before 2013, the Marine Corps had no issue with Marines using polymer magazines in their rifles. An entire battalion from Hawaii even purchased a full supply to outfit the entire unit. But as of 2013, Marines are no longer allowed to use them as per regulations. The reasoning behind this is because the most popular polymer magazine, the 30 round Magpul Pmag, cannot be interchanged with the M27 IAR because of how that rifle’s magazine well is shaped. At the same time these regulations came out, Magpul also came out with their Gen 3 Pmag that could be used in the M27 IAR – very ironic indeed how that timing worked out. So for the most part, Marines with 1/9 used issued aluminum magazines throughout the deployment.

As mentioned previously the AR market in the United States is huge, it is quickly becoming the most popular rifle for hunting, target shooting, and law enforcement application all over. The author hopes that this essay will shed some light on how some of these aftermarket parts fare downrange for those readers that are heavily invested in ARs back home.
