Leupold & Stevens, Inc., provider of the world’s most rugged, lightweight, and clear sport optics, is pleased to announce the immediate launch of its brand-new Mark 4HD family of riflescopes.

No matter the use-case, the Mark 4HD’s optical clarity and lightweight design will get the job done at the range or in the field. The Mark 4HD series features a 4:1 zoom ratio and five magnification ranges, giving you an accurate and reliable option for close-quarter engagements, long-range dominance, and everything in between.

The new lineup includes:

Mark 4HD 1-4×24

Mark 4HD 2.5-10×42

Mark 4HD 4.5-18×52

Mark 4HD 6-24×52

Mark 4HD 8-32×56

The 1-4.5×24 and 2.5-10×42 models feature 30mm maintubes. All 1-4.5×24 models are Second Focal Plane, while the 2.5-10×42 model is available in first (FFP) or second focal plane (SFP). The three higher magnification options have 34mm maintubes and are all FFP optics. MIL or MOA adjustments and reticles are available throughout the line.

“The Mark 4HD family was designed to deliver incredible performance and versatility–there’s an answer in the line for every rifle, on every range,” said John Snodgrass, Tactical Product Line Manager for Leupold & Stevens, Inc. “While its features will allow it to immediately find a home on the rifle of even the most experienced professionals, we’re also excited that, right away, the Mark 4HD offers shooters across the board the opportunity to make the jump to premium performance optics.”

Illuminated reticle options are available. It is push-button operated and features Leupold’s Motion Sensor Technology (MST) which will put the illumination to sleep after five minutes of inactivity, reactivating it as soon as the scope moves.

The entire Mark 4HD family features Leupold’s Professional-Grade Optical System, which delivers the light transmission, glare reduction, and resolution that professional guides and shooters demand. The push-button ZeroLock dial system eliminates accidental dial movement and allows a rapid return to zero. Select models feature a similar ZeroLock windage turret.

New with the Mark 4HD is the PR3-MIL reticle. Building upon Leupold’s popular PR2-MIL reticle, the PR3 provides a clutter-free image for fast, accurate precision aiming.

“Since we rolled it out, the PR2-MIL reticle has been winning competitions around the world,” Snodgrass said. “The PR3-MIL is based on direct feedback from those very same competitive shooters. It utilizes the .25-MIL increment foundation of the PR2’s vertical and horizontal stadia lines, while removing the ‘Christmas Tree’ portion in the lower field of view. It’s incredibly fast and incredibly clear.”

The Mark 4HD is waterproof, fogproof, shockproof, and guaranteed to perform for life. Like all Leupold riflescopes, it is proudly designed, machined, and assembled in the company’s Beaverton, Ore., factory.

By Todd Burgreen

Many have become increasingly interested in the ability to see at night albeit with image intensifying night vision or increasingly popular thermal technology. This is for a variety of reasons…. tactical, hunting, surveillance, general principle (“because you can”), etc. Each system has its pros and cons.

To supplement the CR123 batteries, you should consider picking up the Sightmark Quick Detach Battery pack for use with the Wraith thermal. The rechargeable lithium battery stores 10,000mAh of current that offers 8-10 hours of runtime with the Wraith thermal.

The first Gulf War (1990-91) and subsequent involvements in Iraq and Afghanistan highlighted the crucial role night vision provided by removing the veil of darkness thus transforming the modern battlefield. Night vision is a crucial advantage over less well-equipped opponents. As often happens with advanced military technology, it trickles down to law enforcement and civilian users often becoming more economical over time as consumer sales increase and technology becomes more prevalent. The Sightmark Wraith Mini 2-16×35 thermal riflescope is an excellent example of this.

BUDGET BE DAMNED

With an MSRP of $2100, the Sightmark Wraith offers thermal capabilities to the masses—not only hunters, but also LE departments and security conscience citizens. The Wraith thermal is a must have for anyone who hunts at night—albeit for two- or four-legged quarry.

Sightmark has entered the optics market in force over the last several years with several innovative designs and new takes on established concepts. The company has evolved into a recognized industry leader in all types of optics such as red dots, magnified optics, night vision, and, recently, thermal optics with the Wraith Mini thermal. The Sightmark Wraith thermal stands out based on its performance to price point ratio.

The technical aspects of the Sightmark Wraith Thermal must be discussed to fully appreciate what it offers. The best way I have heard thermal optic devices described is that thermals are not optics per se, but rather a digital camera feeding off infrared/heat waves with signal processor creating images for our recognition. An European-sourced thermal sensor from France is at the heart of the Sightmark Wraith mini thermal. The Wraith has a 384 x 288 pixel resolution sensor featuring a 17-micron sensor pitch allowing for sharp and crisp images. The 17-micron capability allows for increased magnification potential, as well. The Wraith thermal offers 2x optical and 1-8x digital zoom. It has a 50Hz frame rate; meaning the thermal core refreshes the image you see 50 times a second. All of this is crucial for successful observation, tracking, and engagement of moving targets.

The Wraith has five thermal color palette modes—traditional black-hot and white-hot along with green, rainbow, and magenta-hot for added background contrast and more precise heat detection. Ten reticle patterns are available along with nine reticle colors to choose from with its OLED display. The key advantage of OLED is that the screen is self-emissive – as in, it emits its own light. Each individual pixel operates with its own light source, instead of one large backlight like an LCD would use. This results in very sharp image quality with less eye fatigue. Images are just more vibrant with an OLED display. OLED displays refresh faster than LCD viewing displays. This is not only an advantage for moving targets, but also for better real-time recording. Other OLED advantages include perfect black background—something important for a thermal optic. LCD screens with their backlight find it difficult to show true black levels because the backlight is always on, leading to leakage of light to adjacent pixels. Perfect black allows for infinite contrast, so the difference between the darkest and brightest parts of the image is higher than what other display types are capable of. Energy consumption is also less by not needing a backlight to produce light. That makes them a good choice for smaller devices as they can last for a little longer than their LCD-based equivalents.

TALE OF THE TAPE

The Sightmark Wraith thermal is compact, measuring 6.6 inches long, 3 inches wide, and 2.9 inches tall. The squat Wraith thermal weighs in at 19.3 ounces with its aluminum body. It arrives on a Picatinny mounting rail for attachment to firearm. The Picatinny mounting method is handy to sit the Wraith far enough rearward on host firearm for proper eye relief. With that said, the Wraith’s size makes it feasible for use as a handheld unit, as well. This method was used a lot during a visit to Texas to explore what the Wraith offered, especially compared to its more expensive brethren. ATV rides along power line clearings and expansive fields confirmed the Wraith’s listed 1400-yard detection range with positive identification of deer out to 800 yards.

Two CR123A offer 3.5 to 4 hour run time. To supplement the CR123 batteries, we suggest picking up the Sightmark Quick Detach Battery pack for use with the Wraith thermal. The rechargeable lithium battery stores 10,000mAh of current that offers 8 to 10 hours of run time with the Wraith. The Sightmark auxiliary battery pack ingeniously snaps to a Picatinny rail section in front of the Wraith thermal with USB cord connecting the two.

The Wraith provides five configurable weapon profiles/zeros. This eliminates the need to re-zero the Wraith when shifting between different rifles. The scope also comes equipped with a built-in video/camera with audio recording capability on a user provided 256gb memory card. Diopter and focus adjustment levers are found on the front and rear of the unit, respectively.

It is best to familiarize yourself with the thermal’s controls in daylight, so operation is intuitive in the dark. All features such as sighting in, palette colors, magnification adjustments, reticle choice, etc. are chosen with a five button central toggle control on top of the thermal. Here, the analogy of digital camera more than traditional optic rings even more true. The screens that appear and that are toggled through are very similar to modern DSLR cameras. Initial reference to the user manual will guide you to the screen required. With that said, the controls are minimal, with functions controlled by short presses. After a few tries, the grouping of features is easily figured out. The Wraith thermal controls and shooter interface one of the most intuitive we’ve encountered to date. This is compared to numerous night vision and thermal units we’ve handled.

PERFORMANCE PARTNERS

The Sightmark Wraith thermal was mounted on a CZ USA CZ600 Trail rifle chambered in 7.62×39. We wanted to maintain the theme of handy-yet-potent. Any rifle using “Trail” in its name had better be handy—either strapped to a pack or slung over a shoulder. The CZ600 Trail weighs 6.1 pounds with an overall length capable of shrinking to 27.1-inches thanks to a collapsible PDW-style stock. With the stock extended, the CZ600 Trail measures 35-inches. A minimalist M-Lok handguard surrounds a 16.1-inch threaded, cold-hammer forged barrel keeping the rifle svelte with 10-round magazine not protruding below pistol grip. With the 7.62×39 Trail, a CZ Bren 2 magazine is used. Full length picatinny rails runs across the receiver down the top of the handguard. The adjustable stock and full length Picatinny rail are important features when using a thermal optic.

The choice of 7.62×39 may surprise some readers. It should not. The 7.62×39 is equivalent to the 30-30 in terms of ballistics. The real focus was on the Hornady 123-grain SST load and new Sub-X 255-grain subsonic in the CZ600 Trail. The availability of a 7.62×39 subsonic load from Hornady levels the playing field between the .300BLK and 7.62×39 calibers.

Along the same lines of performance, a Rugged Suppressors Alaskan360 was mounted to the CZ600/Wraith combo. The Alaskan360 can be used with 9mm pistols/SMGs AND rifles up to 338 Lapua.

Zeroing the Wraith was easy with no drama. The ability to operate a thermal during the day helps with the sighting in process, as did the mounted Rugged Suppressors Alaskan360 suppressor. The intent was to make sure the Rugged Alaskan was mounted on the CZ600/Sightmark Wraith combo whenever it was taken afield, so it might as well be used when sighting in. The thought was to limit the need for hearing protection when out and about.

One nuance with the sight-in procedure was stapling a small hand warmer on the target to give an aiming point when viewing through the thermal since a paper target provided no real center reference. The Wraith thermal’s simple sight in procedure had the unit sighted-in within three rounds. Previous work with the CZ600 with a Sightmark Citadel 1-10x mounted had showed how accurate the CZ600 was. Three round groups at 100 yards were in the 1.25 to 1.5-inch range. Most will raise an eyebrow at this. 7.62×39 is not known for accuracy. However, the Hornady SST load is not your typical 7.62×39 imported surplus load that most are familiar with. CZ barrels are also superior to AK tubes. The Wraith impressed us by maintaining accuracy standards established by magnified optic before being bumped off by the thermal.

The ability to operate a thermal during the day helps with the sighting-in process. A small hand warmer packet is visible at the center of the target.

NO LIGHTS…. THERMAL…. ACTION

Immediately several night forays were set up in pursuit of predators and general usage to get a sense of what the Sightmark Wraith thermal offered. The compact Wraith thermal delivered surprisingly detailed imaging performance out to 250-yards-plus depending on conditions. There was no issue identifying deer, coyotes, raccoons, and foxes. The polarity contrast of heat made detection easier in certain areas compared to merely using binoculars during the day. The amount of heat signature of vegetation was surprising in thicker/denser areas. However, the ability to adjust palette settings maintained the ability to observe quarry effectively. The preferred method was to keep the Wraith at a low magnification setting for observation purposes. White-hot and black-hot was the go-to palette choice.

One huge advantage of a thermal is its ability to be used during the day. Image intensifying night vision optics are not so flexible. With a NEDT (Noise Equivalent Temperature Difference) of less than 40mK, the Wraith has a temperature differentiation of .04-degree Fahrenheit! The more refined temperature differentiation means the more detailed the provided image can be even—when the sun is out.

Sightmark Wraith Mini 2-16×35 thermal riflescope.

The Sightmark Wraith thermal will have crossover appeal to LE and personal defense users. Officers using thermal optics have a range of abilities not available with flashlights or even image intensifying night vision. While a weapon-mounted thermal sights is not necessarily the forte in the LE realm due to uncompromising need to positively identify a target before engaging, the Wraith thermal offers unsurpassed surveillance capability. This is a huge assistance in fugitive searches—both day and night—in urban or rural settings. Dark or camouflaged clothing worn by a suspect can make it very difficult for officers to use light or night vision technology to distinguish him from his surroundings. With a thermal, officers can see the suspect’s body heat, which makes it very difficult for the suspect to conceal their position, whether they are hiding inside a structure or outdoors. Imagine rolling up to a situation and being able to assess potential problems quickly and discretely in terms of individuals hiding or even animals that may be encountered.

With MSRP of $2100, the Sightmark Wraith offers thermal capabilities to the masses—not only hunters but also LE departments and security conscience citizens.

Another capability tailor-made for thermal optics is search and rescue. The Sightmark Wraith thermal’s handheld capacity can assist in exploring large areas quickly. There is no hiding a person’s body heat, even if incapacitated and unable to move/signal for help. The Wraith thermal eases search efforts in large fields, parks, near roadways, and wooded areas. Searches near bodies of water also offer opportunities to use a thermal imager. As long as the victim is not completely submerged, body heat should be detected by the thermal imager.

The Sightmark Wraith mini thermal is an awesome piece of equipment at a great price point. The image clarity and detail are impressive. With the Sightmark Wraith mini thermal, day or night, nothing can hide.

When speed is paramount, there’s no substitute for a rangefinding binocular. The BX-4 Range HDTBR/W 10x42mm fuses Leupold’s DNA engine and ballistics software with the optical performance diehard hunters and shooters demand.

“The BX-4 Range HD combines the industry’s fastest ranging solution with Leupold’s unparalleled optical performance,” said Product Line Manager Eric Overstreet. “It’s easy to use, it’s incredibly fast, and it offers a clearer display than anything else in its price class.”

A true hybrid of tech and optical performance, the BX-4 Range HD combines Leupold’s DNA laser engine and ballistics software with the company’s award-winning BX-4 binocular, allowing hunters and shooters to spot and range targets at the same time without wasting valuable seconds switching between gear. Its high contrast red OLED display delivers visible readouts in any light, and its edge-to-edge resolution makes glassing sessions easy on the eyes.

The BX-4 Range HD is built around Leupold’s Elite Optical System. It delivers excellent dawn-to-dusk light transmission for a bright image when it matters most, elite-level glare reduction in harsh light, and the resolution and clarity diehard hunters and shooters demand. Compare it to other rangefinding binoculars in its class, and you’ll notice a significant difference, especially in low light.

Looking for a ballistic solution that promises something as simple as range, dial, shoot? Leupold’s True Ballistic Range/Wind (TBR/W) technology takes precision to the next level by offering 25 selectable ballistics groups that account for your preferred cartridge, helping you dial in the exact range of your target. Using the rifleman’s rule on an angled 600-yard shot could result in a 10-15-inch margin of error when compared to the dead-on accuracy of Leupold’s TBR/W. And with TBR/W’s 10-mph wind holds, you’ll have all the information you need to experience more first shot hits. Combine that accuracy with Leupold’s Custom Dial System and you’ll be on target in seconds. The BX-4 Range HD ranges reflective targets at 2,600 yards, trees at 1,600 yards and deer-sized game at 1,100 yards.

“Hunters and shooters have been asking us to develop a rangefinding binocular for years,” said Tim Lesser, Vice President of Product Development and Marketing for Leupold & Stevens, Inc.

“We weren’t going to come to market until we had the product that Leupold consumers both demand and require. The BX-4 Range HD is that product. Its rangefinding solution and optical performance are the best in its class, hands down.”

Further, it is ambidextrous. Left-handed consumers can access the easy-to-use menu and configure the unit to be operated with the left hand.

The BX-4 Range HD delivers superior ruggedness and is tested for extreme climates. It is waterproof and fogproof.

Introducing the all-new ROMEO-X series of optics from SIG SAUER Electro-Optics; inspired by the recently released mil-spec ROMEO-M17 the ROMEO-X delivers military grade performance, reliability, and durability for civilian everyday carry. The ROMEO-X series of red-dot sights is offered as a ROMEO-X Compact for micro-compact pistols to include the P365 and a ROMEO-X Pro for full-size pistols to include the P320.

“The ROMEO-X family of red dot sights is completely optimized for everyday carry and built using the same technology and testing standards of our mil-spec optics that are designed to withstand the rigors of the battlefield,” said Andy York, President, SIG SAUER Electro-Optics. “The ROMEO-X Series is designed for ease of use beginning with the side battery placement leading to an overall low deck height of the sight. This profile gives the optic an extremely low position when mounted to the slide for a full sight picture and co-witness with the existing standard-height iron sights. The ROMEO-X Compact and ROMEO-X Pro are engineered, tested, and built-in Oregon to be the ultimate aiming solution for EDC.”

The SIG SAUER Electro-Optics ROMEO-X Series red-dot sights are available in a compact version (ROMEO-X Compact), to fit micro-compact pistols, and a Pro version (ROMEO-X Pro), to fit full-size pistols, featuring a distortion-free aspheric glass with a patent-pending Beryllium Copper flexure-arm adjustment system, in 7075 aircraft-grade aluminum housing with machined anti-reflection grooves on shooter facing surfaces.

The ROMEO-X Series optics incorporate a high-efficiency point source red LED emitter with 2 MOA dot / 32 MOA circle reticle, side independent brightness adjustment buttons, 15 brightness settings including night vision settings, and a side-mounted CR1632 battery compartment with a threaded battery cap so the optic does not need to be removed from the pistol for battery changes. Additionally, the ROMEO-X Series offers a low deck height for standard-height iron sight co-witness, has a minimum continuous runtime of 20, 000 hours at medium brightness setting and utilizes MOTAC (Motion Activated Illumination), MAGNETAC (Magnetic Activation), and D.A.R.C. (Dark Adaptive Reticles & Coatings) technologies.

More shot-calling precision. Less juggling devices. Whether setting your sights on a Western trophy or ringing steel out to 4000 yards, the Razor HD 4000 GB delivers all the range, ballistic, and environmental data you need for absolute accuracy when opportunity happens.

At the range and especially in the mountains, keeping your pack-out simple is huge. Opportunities to fill your tag can come quickly, but advanced ballistic solutions often require a lot of scrambling between pieces of gear.

It looks like a standard reflex sight, but Thales’ new XTRAIM weapon sight has a couple of very cool tricks in store. First off, it is a reflex sight at heart. But instead of using a laser holograph (like an EoTech) for its reticle, it uses a projected digital reticle that’s configurable to show a dot, a circle, or any of about five other choices in its 30x24mm viewing window.

Second, the sight features a built-in thermal that presents a white-hot, black-hot, or outline image over the top of the direct-view image.

Lastly, the sight’s thermal superpowers are compatible with NODS through the clever use of a prism in the optic’s light path. So, for the first time, guys running night vision goggles have access to on-demand thermal fusion imaging by just raising their rifle optic up to their eyeline. Used this way with a set of panos, the operator maintains complete I² situational awareness without distraction and augments his detection capability with a thermal outline in thier rifle optic. Check out the video below to see how the thermal overlay looks.

The view through Thales’ XTRAIM using it’s thermal imaging overlay.

On the thermal side, the uncooled, NUCless IR sensor has a 12µm pitch, a resolution of 640×480 pixels, and runs at 60Hz, so there’s little lag, flicker, or dragging of moving subjects. The thermal overlay has two options, a traditional full thermal image or an outline mode, as shown above.

Examples of the XTRAIM display in several operating modes.

The unit is about the size of an old EoTech 512 and weighs 18.7 ounces. It runs on a set of two CR123 batteries that provide about seven hours of thermal operation and about 500 hours when powering only the direct view reticle. Fully hardened for battlefield use on carbines and light machine guns, the XTRAIM is also compatible with 3x magnifiers, a rail-mounted remote control, and offers a unique set of observational and targeting benefits for infantry, operators, and paramilitary/law enforcement units.

Unfortunately for civilians, Thales is only offering the XTRAIM to military and law enforcement at this time. If you’re interested, learn more at www.thalesgroup.com or reach out to solutions@thalesdsi.com.

Meopta Sports Optics is pleased to introduce the MeoSight IV. This new red dot reflex sight is Meopta’s smallest, weighing just 1.2 ounces. Its ultra-low profile makes the MeoSight IV ideal for handguns. It can also be mounted to a primary riflescope for fast and accurate close-quarter target acquisition or mounted directly to an accessory rail.

“We designed the MeoSight IV to significantly increase shooter accuracy and speed whether used in handgun competitions, for personal defense, or in law enforcement situations,” said Erik Muller, Product Specialist, Meopta Sport Optics. “This newest generation MeoSight features premium, scratch-resistant optics and a wide sight picture for such a compact sight, facilitating fast and accurate shooting on the move.”

Featuring 1x magnification, a 3 MOA dot, and highly durable, aircraft-grade aluminum body, the MeoSight IV has 120 MOA range of elevation and 120 MOA of windage adjustment.
Holosun’s newest SCS (Solar Charging Sight), the SCS-MP2-GR was designed to fit the Smith & Wesson M&P-M2.0 full size and compact, 9mm and 40 S&W handguns (will not fit 1.0 or Shield models). It is designed to attach directly to the slide without an adapter plate and uses our innovative solar charging system with multi-directional light sensors to automatically adjust brightness in dynamic situations.

The SCS-MP2 features our Multi-Reticle System (MRS) that displays a 32MOA Circle or a 2MOA dot or both and is available only in a Green (540nm) color option. For best zeroing, a 30+/- MOA travel adjustment with 1 MOA click adjustment can be set by adjusting the windage and elevation on the top and side of the optic housing. No matter what reticle choice, automatic ambient lighting reticle intensity is incorporated. The SCS-MP2 is parallax-free with unlimited eye relief for the best possible target acquisition.

The Holosun SCS-MP2

Having a large optic window is important and never more so than on a pistol reflex optic. Built into the 1.93×1.03×0.91 housing is a 0.77×0.58 window. This is a massive window-to-housing ratio and has helped to keep the weight down to 1.3 oz. The window has been coated with various filters and anti-reflective properties to ensure visual acuity. This helps reduce glare, limit streaking, and improve optic quality when acquiring a target.

The SCS can potentially operate indefinitely using an internal, rechargeable 20,000-hour power reserve, meaning under even moderate exposure to bright light, you will never need to change batteries again. The SCS also includes an intensity override function which locks the optic into a high brightness mode for 30 minutes and a low power indicator, which will signal if charging is needed upon system startup. From the safe to range and range to duty weapon, the SCS-MP2 can handle it all.
