By Todd Burgreen

The Smith & Wesson M&P 22 Magnum surprised many a firearm pontificator when it arrived earlier this year. Most didn’t see it coming since it doesn’t seem to fill a particular niche in the market. And, while it might be a gun without a clear role, it’s one that we can evaluate without any preconceived notions. Can it serve as an understudy to centerfire handguns? Sure. However, it does not directly mimic any other weapon out there besides its own M&P 5.7 stablemate, which is its own unicorn. How about outright personal defense? Sure. 30 rounds of 22 Magnum is not to be taken lightly, especially as ammunition potency is improved on. Trail gun? Sure. This is probably the most described role considering the M&P 22 Magnum’s light weight (22 ounces) and high capacity (30 rounds). Plinking or target shooting? Absolutely, considering its lack of recoil, flat-faced trigger, and ability to mount a red dot optic for further sighting enhancement. Any trigger time is good trigger time.

A loadout of 30 rounds of 22 Magnum is not to be taken lightly, especially considering the potency of modern, evolved 22 WMR ammunition.

Sometimes you just have to go with it and not ask why. That’s the sort of impression that the new M&P 22 Magnum semi-auto generates. Who doesn’t like thirty rounds in a lightweight handgun that can spit them out as fast as you can pull the trigger? The M&P 22 Magnum defies easy categorization. It rejects being labeled as an understudy. It easily separates itself from the competition with its 22 WMR chambering and ultra-high capacity.

While the M&P 22 Magnum’s muzzle blast will surprise you with a signature more typical of a centerfire cartridge, recoil is minimal, though, and thus manageable by all shooters. Though popular as a manually operated rifle and revolver round, few manufactures attempt to build a semi-auto rifle or handgun in 22 WMR. This stems from various reasons including 22 WMR cartridge length standards, case rim specifications, and variations in pressure levels of different brands of 22 WMR ammunition. Each of which provided S&W engineers a chance to shine in problem solving. S&W decided to tackle these issues in creating the M&P 22 Magnum. Additional features further adds credence to its uniqueness.

INNOVATION

S&W engineers had to pay special attention to magazine design with the M&P 22 Magnum. Afterall, what good is 30 rounds of firepower if not capable of being sent downrange when needed. The magazine can be described as pie shaped with the tapered end toward the bullet nose. S&W’s manual describes proper loading procedures to help in reliable operation. The requirements are not onerous. The rimmed case is inserted into a segment of the magazine lips before being pushed to the rear of the magazine. After every five or so rounds are loaded, the magazine is to be tapped on something solid such as palm or table to help seat the rims into the magazine without getting out of orientation sequence. The rim of the 22 Magnum round sitting on top of its neighbor must be kept in front. The magazine loading method is straightforward and does not take any more time to complete than random jamming of rounds into any other magazine.

The S&W TEMPO design used in the M&P 22 Magnum is a gas-operated, locked-breech operating system. A gas port near the muzzle funnels gas rearward between the barrel and the surrounding shroud/sleeve.

One of the potential issues with 22 WMR semi-automatic pistols is the wide range of pressures generated by factory ammunition. The S&W TEMPO operating system addresses this with its combination recoil/gas assist design. It allows the S&W M&P22 Magnum to reliably fire a wide variety of ammunition.

S&W cut-away illustration of the TEMPO gas system. The barrel resides inside a shroud with a gas port venting near the muzzle. (Smith & Wesson)

The S&W TEMPO design is a gas-operated, locked-breech operating system. It was initially unveiled with the S&W M&P 5.7 pistol. The TEMPO system is more of a hybrid recoil gas assist design. A gas port near the muzzle funnels gas rearward between the barrel and surrounding shroud/sleeve. The barrel is surrounded by a shroud. A gas port vents gas into the shroud to interact with the barrel. The barrel has six radial piston rings (three slim ones out by muzzle and thicker ones towards the breech) that regulate gas flow. After initial backward movement of slide, the port siphoned-off gas finishes barrel movement rearward, causing it to encounter a lug in the frame, unlocking the barrel from the shroud and slide to finish the recoil process.

DETAILS

The S&W M&P 22 Magnum is a semi-automatic, internal hammer fired pistol with a 4.3-inch barrel. The overall length is 8.4 inches, and the height is 5.9 inches. The empty weight is only 22 ounces. A loaded magazine weighs a mere 6 ounces. This means that a fully loaded M&P 22 Magnum weighs less than 2 pounds. S&W has installed green fiber optic front and fixed rear sights onto the pistol.

M&P 22 Magnum controls are minimal—flat trigger, ambidextrous safety, and slide lock levers. The dust cover features an integrated Picatinny style rail for attaching lights or other accessories. In front of the rear sight, one will find two screws indicating that S&W has tapped and threaded the slide to accommodate one of the many miniature red dot sights that use the Shield RMSc footprint. Each pistol ships with two magazines and a padded plastic case. As expected, the magazines are constructed of high-strength polymer, similar to the M&P 22 Magnum’s frame.

A BETTER WAY TO CONNECT

Smith & Wesson has embraced that we live in a red dot world by milling the M&P 22 Magnum’s slide to accept red dots using the RMSc footprint. (Smith & Wesson)

A Zero Tech Thrive HD Red Dot Micro Reflex optic was mounted on the M&P 22 Magnum and used for the majority of our evaluation. Weighing only 6 ounces, the Zero Tech Thrive HD Micro Reflex’s features advanced shake awake technology. The Thrive HD projects a 3 MOA dot with ten adjustable brightness levels while offering up to 150,000 hours of runtime with a CR2032 battery. Zero Tech has designed the Thrive HD to be recoil, fog, and waterproof.

The Zero Tech Thrive HD/S&W M&P 22 Magnum combo performed better than expected. The natural pointability of the M&P 22 Magnum comes into its own in this realm with the Zero Tech Thrive HD doing its part. The Thrive HD’s rectangular lens offers a superior field of view compared to other red dot options. The minimal frame of the Thrive HD disappears when focusing on the target with the red dot. The dot is crisp with no halos or disfiguration. The red dot was “there” and seamlessly located at first draw. This is a compliment to the S&W choosing a direct mount method (instead of an adapter plate setup) allowing the Zero Tech to sit as low as possible on the slide. The M&P 22 Magnum’s already low bore axis is further enhanced with a subtle beavertail and undercut trigger guard allowing for a very stable sight picture no matter how many or how rapidly rounds are fired.

TIME TO MAKE NOISE

It was a surprise to find the number of 22 Magnum loads directed towards the personal defense realm. Hornady and Federal offer prime examples of this in the form of Hornady’s 45-grain Critical Defense and Federal’s 45-grain PUNCH loads for the 22 Magnum.

The S&W M&P 22 Magnum was tested with a myriad of ammunition from Hornady, Winchester, Speer, and Federal, such as Hornady 30-grain V-Max, 45-grain Critical Defense, Federal 45-grain Punch, 40-grain JHP & FMJ, Speer 40-grain GDHP-SB and Winchester FMJ & 45-grain PDX 1 Defender JHP. S&W provides recommendations for ammunition to be used in the M&P 22 Magnum based on its own testing. Range time exhibited all positives in terms of performance and reliability. The trigger pull was a pleasant surprise with minimal creep and light weight required to initiate cartridge ignition. Out RCBS pull weight gauge showed an average of just over 4 pounds after multiple pull tests.

With a 30-round magazine, it did not take long to send large quantities of rounds downrange with many willing volunteers stuffing magazines and running the M&P 22 Magnum’s trigger. Out of over 400 rounds fired, there were a handful of malfunctions. Most of these were traceable to a volunteer not holding the M&P 22 Magnum firmly and high up on the grip. Another anecdote is the surprisingly loud report the M&P 22 Magnum emits. Ear pro should definitely not be ignored. This is based on the 22 WMR being primarily chambered in rifle length barrels, and thus, the use of slower burning powders that do not get consumed in the 4.3-inch barrel. This made firing the pistol more like firing a centerfire defensive handgun minus the associated recoil. Plate racks and other targets strewn around Echo Valley Training Center were engaged repeatedly, as were more traditional paper targets in an effort to get the full sense of the M&P 22 Magnum’s capabilities.

Accuracy with the rimfire S&W M&P 22 Magnum was more than acceptable and probably better than most users are capable of. It was no problem keeping rounds clustered together even at 25 yards.

Accuracy with the rimfire S&W M&P 22 Magnum was more than acceptable and probably superior to what most users are capable of when being fired from any non-bench position (which is its raison d’être to begin with.) It was no problem keeping rounds in the “A” zone of the IPSC targets back to 25 yards with the aid of the Zero Tech Thrive HD red dot. It’s very likely that accuracy applies to shots taken from further out as long as users resist the temptation to simple blast rounds downrange knowing thirty 22 WMR rounds are sitting in the magazine awaiting release. Recoil is minimal, though, and manageable by all shooters.

PERFORMANCE

Avg.
LESS IS BETTER

The M&P 22 Magnum’s magazine can be described as pie shaped.

The 22 Magnum chambering will instantly give it a black mark in terms of terminal ballistic performance. I offer a counterintuitive thought—perhaps the 22 Magnum is an asset in such a lightweight package with so much firepower on board. Let me finish before snorting and scrolling on by.

Compact pistol sales outpace full size handguns and rifles many times over. Manufacturers have answered the call by placing 380 ACP and even 9 mm cartridges into platforms previously reserved for 22 LR, 25 Auto, or 32 ACP chamberings. The wave of new shooters is more than welcome; however, this is a recipe for a poor initial experience when combining such small weapons with stouter recoiling cartridges. Handy-to-carry does not translate into comfortable to shoot. A pistol chambered in 22 Magnum may be more appropriate option for certain sections of the gun-buying public.

Increased 22 Magnum ammunition performance (not an oxymoron) in the 80s was a major reason why 25 ACP chamberings in pocket pistols fell off. It was a surprise to find the number of 22 Magnum loads directed towards the personal defense realm. Hornady and Winchester offer prime examples in the form of Hornady’s 45-grain Critical Defense and Winchester’s 45-grain PDX 1 loads. Speer and Federal weighs in with 40-grain GDHP-SB and 45-grain PUNCH loads for the 22 Magnum. The M&P 22 Magnum chronoed loads across an RCBS chronograph in the 1125-1350 fps range, depending on bullet weights being fired.

MULTI-PURPOSE CAPABLE

With a 30-round magazine, it did not take long to send large quantities of rounds downrange with many willing volunteers stuffing magazines and running the M&P 22 Magnum’s trigger. Over 400 rounds were fired for this article.

As I brought up at the beginning of the article, is the S&W M&P 22 Magnum a candidate for personal defense, a trail/kit gun, target shooter, or dare we say, just for fun? Each user will have to decide what roles the M&P 22 Magnum will fill in their collection. The S&W M&P 22 Magnum’s high capacity and surprisingly light weight is extremely attractive in whatever role it is destined for. Overall, the M&P 22 Magnum is a valid tool offering real world application.

Derringers from Bond Arms make for an interesting topic. Derringers were the original pocket pistols dating back to Henry Deringer’s muzzle loading percussion cap variant made infamous with Lincoln’s assassination. The newspapers misspelled the name of Booth’s weapon with two “R”s thus why we have derringer as label. When metallic cartridges arrived, the term “derringer” stuck for any diminutive multiple barrel handgun that did not have an action i.e., revolver, semi-automatic, etc. Metallic cartridges allowed an additional barrel to be added, as opposed to a single barrel muzzle loader style. Size is minimized since rounds are loaded into a break open barrel design, giving access to the chambers.

Fast forward…incorporated in 1995, Bond Arms quickly found itself the flag-bearer of the derringer market. Bond Arms is the largest derringer manufacturer in the industry. Bond derringers are U.S.-made. Bond Arms did not merely imitate previous derringers, they innovated along with incorporating premium materials and finishing techniques with their derringers. Bond added a removable trigger guard on many models, a “rebounding hammer” design, retractable firing pins, and a crossbolt safety to modernize the derringer. Most of Bond derringers offer modularity in changing calibers via switching barrels and grip options. Calibers range from 22 LR to 45-70. A 45 LC/.410 shotshell option is also available. The Bond Arms “RS Stinger”, chambered in 38 Special, and the “Honey B” 22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire are used in our review to explore what current derringers offer.

The Bond Arms Stinger RS combines handgun chamberings such 38 Special (tested here) 380 ACP, and 9mm, in a squat compact package.

UNICORN

The Bond Arms Stinger RS and Honey B defy easy categorization. The Bond derringers’ single action manual of arms, trigger pull, controls, sights, grip angle, and other intangibles have no equivalent in handguns out there you can compare them to. Do not take this to mean derringers have no endearing value as a weapon.

The Bond Arms Stinger RS (left), introduced in 2022, and Honey B (right), in 2023, are departures from Bond’s typical high polished/finished offerings. Width and weight reductions were also implemented with the two models.

Derringers are a sub-set of pocket pistols. The case could be made derringers defined the genre from their inception. The argument against feasibility of derringers usually starts with derogatory leading questions such as, “what good is that toy pistol at more than three paces?” and “what do you expect to get from a miniature pistol with minimal capacity and crude sights?” The same derringer antagonists would urge getting a 380 ACP (or even 9mm) in one of the emerging ultra-compact semi-auto designs.

We will make a case that Bond Arms derringers are not merely novelties relying on nostalgic appeal. Deep cover concealment and SHTF backup weapon roles are as relevant now as they were on the frontier, albeit wielded by a card shark or a gentleman entrepreneur. Open carry, then as now, was often infringed upon by town ordinances. Card table distances with assurances of two rounds of firepower are the realm of the derringer. The same strong case for close range defensive weapons can still be made today.

The size of a derringer pistol is reduced since rounds are loaded into a break open barrel design, giving direct access to the chambers.

The Stinger RS, introduced in 2022, and Honey B, in 2023, are departures from Bond’s typical high polish finished offerings. For Bond Arms’ first 20 some years, they were fighting against derringer stereotypes of cheap construction. After getting the brand established, Bond realized less expensive options would be viable. The company recognized that a reduction in width and weight would also be appreciated by the market. There was no compromise on materials—the only expense reduction here is a result of bypassing time-consuming hand finishing. The Stinger RS and Honey B are constructed of 400-series stainless steel. The frames are investment cast. Any burs are knocked off before the frame is bead blasted. The barrels are machined from bar stock. The exterior of the barrel is also bead blasted with the flats receiving a moderate polish. Commensurate with this time savings, pricing is reduced approximately in half for the Stinger RS and Honey B when compared to other Bond models featuring a high degree of hand finishing. Another cost-saving measure, the Stinger RS and Honey B derringers do not have removable trigger guards as found on many of the Bond Arms derringers.

Bond Arms Stinger RS (left) is chambered in 38 Special and Honey B (right) in 22 WMR.

The Stinger RS combines handgun chamberings such 38 Special (tested here) 380 ACP and 9mm, in a squat, compact package. The Stinger RS weighs 16 ounces and measures 5 inches long. The twin 3-inch barrels are its defining aesthetic. The fixed sights are purposely minimal to reduce snagging for a handgun destined mainly for pocket or other types of deep concealed carry. The Honey B’s salient feature is the B6 grip. The B6 grip allows much more purchase on the Bond frame along with a palm swell. B6 grips are standard on the Bond Arms behemoths chambered in 45-70 and 45 Colt/.410. The Honey B is chambered in 22 LR, 22 WMR (tested here), 380 ACP, 9mm Luger, and 38 Special Weight for the Honey B is 17.5 ounces, measuring 5.5 inches with 3-inch barrels. Weight reduction is not the only nod to improved concealed carry for the Stinger RS and Honey B; the profile of the frame is significantly thinner than most other Bond Arms offerings.

TIME TO FEEL THE STING

Range evaluation of the Stinger RS and Honey B consisted of establishing reliability first, then getting into relative accuracy and handling characteristics. Several double barrels worth of Hornady, Federal, Winchester, Speer and CCI ammunition was spent engaging paper silhouettes, plate racks and man-sized steel targets with each. Engagement distances were primarily at 3 to 5 yards. More of a point-shooting method was utilized along with a one-handed firing grip. This was found to be a more realistic way of analyzing Bond Arms derringers’ capabilities considering the role it was designed for—deep concealment.

You do not want to grip your Stinger RS too high on the frame for a few reasons. Putting your finger top of the trigger shoe will negatively impact perceived pull weight. Pulling from lower on the trigger is suggested. This less likely to happen with the Honey B due to the B6 grips intuitively guiding your hand to the ideal location. The Bong Arms trigger is pushed or rolled downward toward heel of the butt rather than pulled straight rearward. Lastly, you do not want your hand exerting pressure on the cocked hammer, as this also negatively impacts trigger pull. I read about this during my research and verified this experience during my evaluation. When done properly, trigger pull is in the 6-pound range for each derringer.

Width comparison of the Stinger RS (left) and Honey B (right) with another Bond Arms offering, the Roughneck (center).

The Honey B 22 WMR’s muzzle blast is surprising with a visual signature more typical of a centerfire cartridge than rimfire. This is based on the 22 WMR being primarily chambered in rifle length barrels and thus the use of slower burning powders that do not get consumed in the Honey B’s 3-inch barrel. Recoil is minimal, though, and thus manageable for all shooters. The 22 WMR chambering will instantly give it a black mark in terms of terminal ballistic performance. I offer a counterintuitive thought—perhaps the 22 WMR is an asset in such a diminutive package. Let me finish before snorting and scrolling onward.

“Handy to carry” does not translate into “comfortable to fire.” A derringer chambered in 22 WMR may be a better or more appropriate option for certain sections of the gun buying public. Increased 22 Mag ammunition performance (not an oxymoron) in the 80’s was a major reason why 25 ACP chamberings in pocket pistols fell off. The Honey B was tested with a myriad of 22 WMR ammunition from Hornady, Winchester, Federal Premium, and Speer. It was a surprise to find the number of 22 WMR loads directed towards the personal defense realm. Hornady and Winchester offer prime examples of this in the form of Hornady’s 45gr Critical Defense and Winchester’s 45gr PDX1 loads. Speer weighs in with 40gr GDHP-SB loads for the 22 WMR.

Recoil is minimal with the Honey B 22 WMR and, thus, manageable by all shooters.

The 22 WMR has been labeled as the “poor man’s” 5.7x28mm handgun in reference to the FN FNH introduction. Don’t let this mislead—the 22 WMR does not compete with the 5.7×28 in terms of velocity achieved in either a handgun or rifle and was never intended to when it was designed. For example, Hornady 45-grain Critical Defense and Speer 40-grain GDHP-SP clock slightly over 1000 fps out of the Honey B’s 3-inch barrel.

The Stinger RS fits the hand better than expected with its diminutive grip. Recoil was more subdued than anticipated with the 38 Spl even with slimmer, lighter Stinger RS frame. One worthy sidenote with the Stinger RS is the ability to access CCI 38 Spl shot shells. This is awful handy when encountering a snake or other vermin unexpectedly. Effective range would be as close as you can get without being attacked by your quarry. It is much easier to hit small target with shot pattern than single projectile. CCI also offers shot shells for the 22 WMR chambering. However, experience has shown the smaller #12 shot and 52-grain weight with the 22 WMR is not as effective as the 38 SPL throwing 100 grains of #9 shot.

Rimmed revolver cartridges are my preference for Bond derringer use. While certainly no speed load, the rims found on the 38 SPL and 22 WMR interact more positively with the manual Bond extractors found on the side of the twin barrels. Bond derringers chambered for rimless cartridges have notched chamber openings for fingernail or a pick of some kind to extract spent casings.

The Bond Arms derringer’s twin barrels are not regulated. The top barrel is the closest to the sight picture. The over/under barrels produced approximately 4-inch, two-round groups at 5 yards when using the same point of aim. Once reloaded, the respective upper and lower barrels placed rounds within an inch of each shot fired. Bond Arms literature indicates that firing order automatically swaps from one barrel to the next every time the hammer is pulled back, whether a cartridge is in the chamber or not. If you need to know which barrel is going to fire, look at the position of the hammer head. When the hammer head is close to the hammer, the top barrel will be firing. When the hammer head is further away, the bottom barrel will fire.

FACTS OF LIFE

The Bond Arms Stinger RS and Honey B defies easy categorization being unique compared to other handguns. However, ancillary items such as holsters are readily available.

In terms of personal defense, Bond Arms derringers seem anachronistic, especially when compared against polymer-framed, high-capacity semi-automatic pistols that continue to compress in size in response consumer personal defense needs. However, mindset, awareness and making sure you have a weapon when needed is the true goal. The facts of life often intercede making carry of your go-to handgun impractical either by weather, clothing restrictions, non-permissive environment, etc. Handguns, by nature, are accepted as a compromise in terms of lethality traded for portability when compared to rifles or shotguns. Bond Arms’ derringers certainly reside on specialized side. Let me be clear—I’m not advocating that a Bond Arms Roughneck be your primary choice for self-defense. However, a Bond Arms derringer could certainly fill a role in your overall defensive plan and posture.

By Todd Burgreen

Terminology is just not an exercise in word play. Modern Sporting Rifle (MSR) is an accurate description of what the AR has evolved into. You can no longer assume a rifle sports an M4 profile or is even chambered in 5.56mm anymore when you refer to an AR rifle. Yes, modern sporting rifle is a more appealing term than assault rifle in describing AR rifles, especially in the context of the one-sided media. It is also a more accurate description.

MSR parlance for the AR is an industry attempt to help define the growing role that AR-type rifles have assumed, which extends beyond the strictly tactical realm. AR rifles are versatile, easily accessorized, and suitable for a wide variety of recreational, hunting, sport shooting, and professional applications. While ARs were quickly embraced for varmint hunting, caliber expansion has steadily grown in popularity with hunters for larger sized game, as well. The Stag Arms Stag10 Pursuit is a great example of the growing potential of ARs in the hunting arena. The Stag Pursuit highlights all of the AR platform’s positives in its MSR form, especially when combined with the 6.5 Creedmoor cartridge.

STAG ARMS

Stag Arms arrived on the scene in 2003. Their commitment to offering left-handed AR rifles as well as right-handed weapons helped create a market niche for them. Stag Arms gained a solid reputation for manufacturing quality AR rifles that often offered more than their price suggested. A lifetime transferrable warranty and “Infinite Shot Barrel” guarantee make strong statements about Stag Arms commitment to quality.

A change of scenery can spark innovation. This works with corporate entities as well. Stag Arms’ relocation to Cheyenne, WY in late 2018 from Connecticut certainly rejuvenated their creative juices. The recently introduced Stag10 Pursuit is proof. Stag Arms is serving notice they are not going anywhere and are here to compete.

The Stag Arms Stag10 Pursuit is worthy of consideration based on innovative design, attention to detail and quality of materials used in its manufacture.

THE DEVIL IS IN THE DETAILS

Without a doubt, the Stag Arms Pursuit rifle will change users’ thoughts on how an AR10-style rifle can be configured. Often the AR10 is associated with unwieldy profile, weighing substantially more than nine pounds. Stag Arms made a conscience effort with the Pursuit to harness the 6.5 Creedmoor’s potential in a more hunter-friendly form. But, the Stag Arms Pursuit’s profile leaves no doubt it is an MSR.

The Stag Arms leather cheek piece is a unique attribute offering distinctive looks with excellent functionality.

The Stag10 Pursuit is evidence that conscientious attention to detail can pay big dividends for the overall package. You do not have to reinvent the wheel to offer consumers something out of the ordinary. For example, the Pursuit’s Midnight Bronze Cerakote is not merely for aesthetics. This color chosen to compliment the user’s camouflage efforts when afield. No matter the pattern chosen, the Pursuit will not be out of place. The adjustable Magpul CTR buttstock minimizes weight but allows the user to lock it down once the length chosen. The Stag Arms leather cheek piece a unique attribute offering distinct looks with functionality. Stag Arms ambidextrous Breach charging handle is another nice touch. Anyone who has operated an AR10-style MSR knows the extra leverage needed to manually operate the bolt group, especially if a variable powered optic is mounted (limiting the ability to “grip and rip” the charging handle). Magpul MOE K2+ pistol grip features rubber overmolding for secure purchase, even with gloves on, along with more vertical 17-degree angle placing shooters hand in superior position to interact with Timney Triggers “Curved Short 2-Stage Trigger.”

Stag Arms ambidextrous “Breach” charging handle is another nice touch.
A Stag Arms Slim Line aluminum 16.5-inch forend surrounds an 18-inch Ballistic Advantage Hanson profile barrel made from 4150 CMV steel that’s then nitride coated. The BA Hanson barrel is a major distinguishing component of the Stag Arms Pursuit package. The BA Hansen profile barrel wears a VG6 Precision Gamma hybrid muzzle break compensator. The 18-inch barrel is a good compromise between performance and portability. A 24-inch barrel may wring the most out of the 6.5 Creedmoor cartridge but something that long and heavy will probably be left home when it is time to carry for a hunt. A 24-inch barrel for PRS competition? Sure. A 24-inch barrel for scrambling up and down hills or making your way through thick terrain, not so much. The Stag Arms Pursuit 6.5 CM weighs in at 8 pounds, 4 ounces with its 18-inch tube. Also, the 18-inch barrel maintains the feasibility of mounting a suppressor without totally destroying its handling, if a user desires.

The Pursuit’s BA Hansen profile barrel wears a VG6 Gamma hybrid muzzle break compensator.

The Ballistic Advantage Hanson profile barrel is not just about a weight. Much more thought is put into the Pursuit’s barrel besides shaving metal from it. It’s a medium contour barrel with more weight and material near the chamber to help dissipate heat. The most noteworthy aspect of the barrel is lack of a right angle (shoulder) at the gas block journal. (The “journal” being where the gas block rests on the barrel.) The theory is that, by removing the shoulder, barrel whip/harmonics are reduced, thus increasing accuracy potential. As the barrel transitions from the journal to the muzzle, it tapers down to a smaller outer diameter reducing the overall weight of the barrel.

The added weight of most AR10 platforms (compared to the smaller AR15) negates the inherently good handling qualities of an AR in many users’ minds. Not the Stag Arms Pursuit. The combination of the great handling Stag10 Pursuit platform with the increased power provided by the 6.5 CM cartridge is the key to its allure as a versatile performer afield. The Pursuit headlines what the MSR offers as a hunting package. This is speaking in terms of lethality and effective range while still allowing for easy carrying. The accuracy potential of a quality AR15 or AR10-type weapon is on par or exceeds that of a bolt action. The Stag Arms Stag10 Pursuit reinforces this assumption.

PREMIUM SUPPORTING CAST

The 6.5 CM cartridge was introduced by Hornady in 2007 for long range target shooting applications. The 6.5 Creedmoor typifies the short and efficient cartridge principle. 6.5mm bullets have a reputation for high ballistic coefficient (BC) rating as well as sectional density (SD). SD is the ratio of a bullet’s mass to its cross-section. All things being equal, a high SD penetrates better than a low SD. BC is a measurement of how well a bullet moves thru the air. Velocity loss and impact of wind drift is minimized the higher the BC rating as the round travels downrange. The final sweetener is how the 6.5 CM provides mild recoil. 120-140 grains bullets have always attracted hunters/tactical/target shooters. It’s hard to beat 130 grains moving at nearly 3000 feet per second!

A Burris XTR III 3.3-18x optic was mounted to the Stag10 Pursuit using a Burris AR-Signature QD P.E.P.R. Mount. The Burris mount is almost as impressive as the optic.

I agonized over scope selection. I did not want to put an anchor on the top rail; yet still wanted magnification range to take advantage of an MSR chambered in the potent 6.5 CM. We are talking about true multipurpose roles…. stalking game while maintaining long range punch across a clearing. An important part of the accuracy equation is a quality optic to go along with cartridge and rifle. A Burris XTR III 3.3-18x optic was mounted to the Stag10 Pursuit using a Burris AR-Signature QD P.E.P.R. Mount. The Burris mount is almost as impressive as the optic. The Burris QD mount ensures 0.25 MOA re-mount capability, and includes Burris’ Signature polymer ring inserts, which provides adjustment from 5 to 40 MOA without using windage/elevation knobs.

The Burris XTR III 3.3-18x’s versatile, nearly 6-times zoom, provides a larger field of view at close ranges and better target acquisition at long ranges. The XTR III utilizes front focal plane reticle. Burris has equipped the XTR III with eleven red and green illumination settings. The XTR III is built with a 34mm nitrogen-filled body tube for increased strength and extended adjustment range. Elevation adjustments up to 120 MOA on the 3.3-18x50mm take the 6.5 Creedmoor past one mile and expanded side parallax adjustment on both models allows fine-tuning focus at shorter distances. Premium glass and optical designs, including a smaller eyepiece signature and larger eye box, provide best-in-class field-of-view, deeper depth of focus, and outstanding light transmission.

RANGE TIME

Stag Arms Pursuit was tested with a variety of ammunition types to determine innate accuracy potential.

The Stag Arms Stag10 Pursuit was initially sighted in at Echo Valley Training Center’s (EVTC) Range #2 with a 100-yard zero. Different 6.5 CM loads were fired from the bench to determine a base accuracy level. Various loads from Hornady and Federal consisted of a mix of hunting and match loads to illustrate the ballistic flexibility inherent in both the Pursuit and the 6.5 CM cartridge. These specific loads were Federal Premium 120-grain Trophy Copper and 140-grain MatchKing. Hornady was represented by the 129-grain SST, 140-grain ELD Match, and 143-grain ELD-X. SIG Sauer 120-grain HT and 130-grain CET were also included. This is just a small splattering of the 6.5Creedmoor loads available from each company with other companies offering even more. Overall, accuracy was impressive with no load producing groups over 1.5 inches at 100 yards with most hovering in the 1.25-inch range. The Timney trigger is a real treat with the Stag10 Pursuit. It provides a short take up and a 3.75-to-4-pound break per our RCBS Trigger Gauge.

LOAD

VELOCITY AVG.

AVG@100yd

Federal 120 grain Trophy Copper

2774 fps

1.66 in.

SIG Sauer 130 grain CET

2731 fps

1 .25 in.

Hornady 129 grain SST

2793 fps

1.33 in.

Hornady 143 grain ELD-X

2682 fps

1.25 in.

SIG Sauer 120gr HT

2804 fps

1.5 in.

Performance: Stag Arms Stag10 Pursuit

After the strong 100-yard accuracy performance, the 300 yard and 550 yard tests were eagerly anticipated. In conjunction with individual training bays, EVTC features a multi-stepped target berm that are strewn with reactive steel targets at ranges varying from 150 yards out to 350 yards. A 750 yard known distance (KD) range is also available. Firing the Stag Arms Pursuit from the prone position produced consistent hits on the quarter-scale man steel targets placed at 350 yards. Firing at paper targets produced 2.5 to 3.5-inch groups at 300 yards, depending on load used. EVTC’s KD range allows for up to 750-yard target engagements. The accuracy exhibited at 100 yards proved invaluable at extended ranges. As long as I did my job reading wind conditions, the Stag Pursuit produced solid strikes on the steel targets. The premium ammunition along with Burris XTRIII optic certainly assisted with such high-level performance.

These groups represent some of the first shots fired with the Pursuit. The target shows potential as groups got tighter as my familiarity with MSR Pursuit grew over numerous range sessions.

THE QUINTESSENTIAL AR

Many contend that the 6.5 CM chambered in an accurate semi-automatic like the Stag Arms Stag10 Pursuit is the epitome of a MSR. A trained marksman will definitely be able to put to good use the ballistic advantages offered by the 6.5 CM Stag Pursuit with its precision semi-automatic firepower. Yes, first round hits are paramount. However, do not underestimate the importance of fast follow up shots after observing initial impact or if more targets are available.

Stag Arms did not enter into the MSR market without serious forethought and conscience decision to try and separate their rifle from other offerings in a cluttered market. The Stag10 Pursuit succeeds in this mission.

By Todd Burgreen

CZ-USA is the U.S. subsidiary for the CZ Corporation based in the Czech Republic. CZ dates back to 1936, when, based on a political decision of the National Defense Council, it was established as a branch plant of Ceska zbrojovka (translates to Czech Armory) located in the town of Strakonice. In January 1937, production of military and civilian arms commenced. The first products were aircraft machine guns, military pistols, and rifles. During the Nazi occupation, the plant was forced to produce and repair military arms. Events leading up to and through WWII, combined with the subsequent Cold War between the West and East, saw the removal of the CZ name from the U.S. market for the last half of the 20th Century.

In 1990, state-controlled production for the Czechoslovakian armed forces ceased with the newly available capacity turned to expanding production of arms for hunting and sporting purposes, as well as exports for police and military units. CZ is one of the largest firearm manufacturers in the world with numerous subsidiaries such as CZ-USA located in Kansas City, Missouri, as well as Dan Wesson and, recently, Colt. Dan Wesson became part of the CZ group of companies in 2005. CZ acquired Colt in 2021, further expanding its corporate girth.

Prior to the CZ acquisition, Dan Wesson Dan Wesson Firearms began working on the development of a 1911 style pistol. The objective for this product line was the same as Dan Wesson revolvers—to make the most accurate and reliable out-of-the-box 1911s on the market with features dictated by customers. Operating under the CZ corporate umbrella gave Dan Wesson the financial backing and corporate resources to once again pursue the quality products Dan Wesson was known for with its innovative revolvers in the 1980s.

The Dan Wesson DWX allows a user to indulge oneself by having something not so typical.

Where is all this going? Well, not so obviously, the Dan Wesson DWX. It takes an operation like CZ to bring a weapon on the market that combines features of the original iron curtain “Wonder Nine” CZ75 with the American icon 1911 (the modern rendition is the 2011) with aspects of other well-known firearm models sprinkled in for good measure. The DWX tantalized the market at the 2019 SHOT Show with two variants previewed—full size and compact. However, the world shutting down soon after with the COVID crisis impacted supply chain and production. Only recently has the full size DWX started to arrive on shelves.

Too Good To Be True?

None other than the late Jeff Cooper heralded the CZ75 as the finest 9mm service pistol made. This is a strong statement considering Mr. Cooper’s well-known affinity for the 45ACP 1911. Few original CZ75 pistols made their way to the U.S. during the Cold War; with the handful available from whatever means held onto tightly by the fortunate individuals so blessed, as the CZ75 commanded an artificially exorbitant price tag due to import restrictions. The end of the Cold War combined with rescinding of the ridiculous and misguided high-capacity magazine ban led to the rebirth of the CZ “Wonder Nine” as well as CZ Incorporated.

For many, there is no debate over choosing a personal defense handgun. Any discussions of preferred weapons start and stops with John Browning’s 1911. The association between the 45ACP cartridge and the 1911 platform is seamless—though this has given way to more acceptance of 9mm 1911s in recent years—especially as capacity increases with the 2011 frame. Most will admit to the proclivity for carrying eight rounds of 45ACP in the classic single-stack 1911 frame over ten rounds of 9mm. This opinion changes for many once the 9mm count reaches 15+ rounds, especially as case studies and growing experience derived from force-on-force training has come to light. Consideration of handguns chambered in 9mm becomes more feasible as capacity increases.

Platypus Effect

The CZ75 grip frame and 1911-like slide profile with single action “cocked and locked” trigger aesthetics make the DWX CZ75/1911 combo analogy an easy leap of the imagination. An oversized trigger guard makes the DWX easy to operate while wearing gloves. An integral Picatinny rail under the pistol’s frame readily accepts lights, lasers, and other accessories. A more detailed study of the DWX will shine even more light on the DWX’s firearm family tree.

The CZ75 grip frame and 1911-like slide profile with single action “cocked and locked” trigger aesthetics makes the DWX CZ75/1911 combo analogy an easy leap of the imagination.

Yes, the DWX operates via Browning’s short-recoil principle as templated by the 1911. However, Dan Wesson chose to go with SIG Sauer’s version that became predominant with the SIG P220’s arrival in 1975 versus the original 1911 style. For the record, the CZ75 also used Browning’s original lug design, as well. With the DWX, the locking lugs have been removed from the barrel as well as interacting slots in the slide that interface with the lugs. Instead, SIG used the forward edge of the barrel chamber to lock into the slide’s ejection port. A much simpler manufacturing method that can be held to tight tolerances in our age of CNC machining.

The use of Browning plug/bushing capturing recoil spring and surrounding barrel is dispensed with. The DWX uses a full length guide rod that fits into the slide’s integral barrel bushing. A 1911-style spring is used, making adjustment (spring weight tinkering) simple. The DWX barrel is machined to sit flush with the slide. An external extractor is fitted on the DWX , just as well to get away from the finicky internal extractor design of the original 1911.

Dan Wesson DWX field stripped.

The DWX’s double stack frame is contoured to maintain CZ75 characteristics while accommodating high-capacity CZ P09/P10F magazines with a 19-round capacity right out of the box. The DWX exudes a “steely” feel thanks to its grip being created from metal from versus the polymer found with most high capacity frames including the 2011 double column 1911 variants. This will warm the hearts of many who do not care for the polymer revolution.

Thanks to 1911-style dovetailed front sight and adjustable CZ Shadow 2-style rear sight, sights are easily customized if the end user desires something different. Target acquisition is fast due to the fiber optic giving a fast and clear “flash” at close range, yet allowing for more precise aimed fire at distance. You will automatically focus on the most important part of your sighting system—the front sight. In a perfect world, the DWX would have arrived with an optic cut for mounting a red dot. However, considering production issues dating back to 2019, we should be glad the DWX wasn’t delayed longer to provide this option. The word is, an optic cut DWX model is in the works… as well as a compact DWX version.

Living Up To Expectations

DWX shown with Versacarry holsters.

All of these DWX enhancements mean little if it feels like an unwieldy paperweight in ones hands instead of a natural pointing handgun stemming from esteemed lineage such as the CZ75 and 1911. The majority of range testing with the DWX took place at Echo Valley Training Center. Two main evaluation priorities were the focus—make sure that DWX’s reliability was beyond reproach and determine if the DWX offered something beyond the other handguns on the market. Of first concern, the Dan Wesson DWX handled several types of ammunition without a problem. Firing began with basic drills to get acclimated with the trigger, sights, and overall feel. The sights were zeroed out of the box for 25 yards using the classic six o’clock hold. Various bullet profiles and weights were used to ensure nothing interacted with the DWX to cause malfunctions. A wide range of 9mm loads were tested including 115-, 124-, and 147-grain JHP and FMJ loads from Black Hills, Federal, Hornady, and Winchester.

Several magazines’ worth of ammunition was spent engaging plate racks and man-sized steel targets. Drills quickly moved past stand and deliver drills to more dynamic drills involving movement, magazine reloads, and firing from behind cover. The DWX’s world class ergonomics and trigger allowed for rapid engagement of targets combined with well thought out ergonomics positioning the hand near optimum position, starting with the presentation from the holster. Approximately 500 rounds were fired while compiling this article without encountering any issues.

The DWX did not disappoint, regularly producing 2.5-inch groups at 25 yards when fired from standing, unsupported positions. Bench testing could not be resisted after witnessing the unsupported accuracy results. Sub-2-inch groups at 25-yard were not unusual. The advantage of the single action trigger option was quickly evident during the bench testing where accuracy was the goal. As can be expected recoil impulse was minimal in a 45-ounce handgun chambered in 9mm, especially one with the ergonomics of the DWX.

Thinking Inside the Box

Even though the Dan Wesson DWX is more intended to be a sporting or competition handgun from the manufacturer’s point of view, it is easy to envision it in a more basic role as personal defense weapon. The 19+1 capacity mated to low recoil and the capability to deploy from condition one “cocked and locked” carry certainly compares well to the numerous 2011 9mm models hitting the market.

A DWX sitting in a SecureIt HG2 handgun safe is a potent and secure home defense solution.

A DWX sitting in a SecureIt HG2 handgun safe is not hard to envision. A nightstand weapon is not concerned with on body carryability or concealability. Heavier, larger frame weapons with accessories such as light and/or laser are all more practical for a nightstand choice than daily carry.

The SecureIT HG2 is a compact hybrid design combining a gunbox with quick digital finger code access. A spring-loaded top door flips open allowing for easy access with an illuminated, padded interior where your handgun rests. A pouch under the door allows for storage of extra magazine, flashlight, etc. The patented HG2 handgun safe has pre-drilled holes for mounting, with popular locations including your nightstand, kitchen drawers, closet shelves, dressers, or under the bed. The HG2 is reassuringly stout weighing 10 pounds. The HG2 follows SecureIt’s concept of decentralize firearm storage locations taking advantage of a criminals limited available time on the scene. SecureIt HG2 is far better than hiding your weapon in a sock drawer or hidden with coats. SecureIt products are made from hardened steel providing lockable solutions preventing thieves, unauthorized members of your home or guests to access a firearm. This is superior to any sort of “hide and seek” solutions.

That Is A Wrap

The CZ 75 and 1911 designs are too well known to attempt any new expose story, however The Dan Wesson DWX tested here serves as reminder why the CZ75 and 1911/2011 designs still hold a prominent place in the world. Many will argue that the CZ75 and 1911 are the finest service pistols created, with both also having distinguished competition careers, as well. The Dan Wesson DWX allows a user to indulge oneself by having something not so typical.

Shadow Systems, based in Plano, TX, arrived on the polymer striker-fired handgun scene in 2016. The company quickly gained a reputation as a solid upgrade over other polymer framed striker-fired weapons on the market. Not only talking about the Austrian variation, but all offerings. This stems from Shadow Systems’ in-house manufacturing of slides, barrels, triggers, and internals. Shadow Systems also employs patented MIM and injection mold tooling for frames and small parts. An example is Shadow Systems own LCI extractor. It features proprietary geometry for extra reliability and consistent 3 o’clock brass ejection pattern versus brass back in your face you get with some other polymer striker-fired handguns.

The CR920P is great example of Shadow Systems’ innovation and ability to respond quickly to emerging weapon technology and trends. As we know red dots on personal defense handguns are here to stay. Most Shadow System models come standard with an optic-ready slide cut, including the CR920P. The Shadow Systems optic cut is unique thanks to its ability to accommodate multiple manufacturer red dots without need for adaptor plates. The Shadow Systems mounting method allows for a lower 1/3 co-witness with the Shadow System low-profile factory sights. The elimination of suppressor height iron sights protruding upward from the slide will be warmly received by anyone that has been gouged or had them snag on a cover garment during a draw stroke. Co-witnessing is important, as anything electronic can fail, no matter how rugged; thus, it’s important to have iron sights ready as a backup plan.

Shadow Systems CR920P shown with a variety of premium personal defense loads from Hornady, SIG Sauer, Black Hills, Federal, and Norma.

What sets apart the CR920P from its stablemates is the integrated compensator at the end of the slide. An earlier compensated model, the DR920P, showed Shadow System’s creativity. Merely screwing on a compensator was not good enough. In fact, the Shadow System compensator does not require a threaded barrel. This is good news for those living in jurisdictions prohibiting threaded barrels.

The CR920P takes this a step further. The CR920P employs a proprietary 3-lug muzzle that works in combination with a centrally located locking lever in the body of the compensator. The intent here was to keep the pistol as compact as possible. The compensator is machined in a way to give a unified appearance with the slide and frame. This allows the CR920P to fit into a wide array of holsters created for the Glock 43X/48 models from Austria by way of Smyrna, Georgia.

FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION

With the CR920P, Shadow Systems creates a superior covert carry handgun that excels in gunfighting, not just reactive defense most associated with smaller framed handguns. The CR920P is a slim, petite, sub-compact polymer handgun chambered in 9mm. Dimensions lend it to pocket, ankle, belly band, or other deep cover methods of concealed carry.

The CR920P is created from scratch. It is NOT a customized Glock. The CR920P benefits from Shadow Systems quality control and experienced gunsmiths pulling it all together. With that said let’s lay out what the CR920P consists of; Shadow Systems 1:10 twist conventional rifling 3.75-inch spiral fluted bronze TiCN coated match barrel made from 416-R stainless steel, distinct Shadow Systems slide machined from 17-4 stainless steel with enhanced serration all around, patent pending optic cut, black nitride finish on the slide, steel iron sights with green Tritium front, undercut trigger guard, stainless steel guide rod, integral railed dust cover, and a flat-faced trigger.

ATTENTION TO DETAIL

Shadow Systems slides are machined from 17-4 stainless steel. The CR920P’ slide is not just a hunk of steel meant to host barrel, sights etc. The slide is well thought out—from serration pattern to optic cut. Special attention is paid to the barrel lug and hood geometry to ensure concentric lockup enhancing accuracy. The serrations are not merely aesthetic. The purposely designed directional nature of the serrations provide an aggressive grasping surface when manipulating the slide… but they also reduce friction when coming out of the holster. The serrations combined with the window cut in the slide also reduces reciprocating slide mass. Lastly, the serrations contribute to minimizing weight. The CR920P weighs only 20 ounces.

The petite CR920P breaks down simply into five pieces—frame, slide, barrel, dual recoil spring and compensator.

The CR920P sits low in your hand for better recoil control. An extended beavertail and double trigger guard undercut assists with proper grip straight from the holster. Material is relieved from where the guard connects with the grip as well as under the center of the trigger guard. A nice touch usually only found on polymer frames sent out for custom stippling are the recoil ledges on both sides of the frame in front of the trigger guard for off-hand thumb placement as well as finger placement when not manipulating the trigger. Shadow Systems enhanced the CR920P’s polymer frame using a texturing pattern, lengthened backstrap skirt and a streamlined extended beavertail. These things were done so that the CR920P feels like a larger handgun when fired. Accurate strings of fire with multiple rounds placed on target bears out the Shadow Systems design philosophy.

The CR920P’s compensator further accentuates the recoil control characteristics of the Shadow Systems design philosophy. It produces an extremely benign recoil impulse and lowered decreased muzzle flip due to the single-chamber comp using muzzle gases to drive the slide down after firing. This is key in keeping the handgun on target during multiple shot strings of fire.

WHY COMP?

Just as with red dot sights on handguns, compensators are expanding beyond competition applications and becoming more prominent in the realm of personal defense weapons. This drives the impulse to reduce compensator size while still retaining effectiveness. Why? Part of the challenge of using a handgun involves controlling muzzle flip. No one is saying a 9mm needs a brake. Do not confuse muzzle brake with compensator. However, controlling muzzle rise is a valid goal.

Muzzle flip reduces the speed with which you can accurately fire multiple rounds. The weapon must return to the sight alignment point before firing again. Recoil and muzzle flip also cause the pistol frame to move in the hand. A well-designed compensator allows for an easier job in firing the weapon under normal conditions, as well as under duress or with one hand. Most literature on compensators indicate 30% to 40% reduction of muzzle flip. Testing protocols can be somewhat subjective.

A size-equivalent non-compensated handgun was fired next to the CR920P. I not only fired the weapons but also volunteered students who were attending a concealed carry certification course at my home range Echo Valley Training Center. Many were new to handgun shooting which served my purposes perfectly. I loaded the same ammunition and have shooters engage a target 7 to 10 yards away. There was no prefacing what I was looking for; just questions after each handgun was shot asking about the perceived recoil and muzzle flip. The CR920P was unanimously judged as much more pleasant and easier to shoot accurately.

LOAD

VELOCITY

AVG.
Accuracy test protocol consisted of three five-shot groups with each ammunition type. Group sizes were averaged. Velocity figures obtained by averaging five rounds fired over a Caldwell Precision Shooting chronograph.

NOTHING QUITE LIKE IT

The CR920P can be compared to a Glock 43 in terms of size. However, the CR920P arrives in a zippered pistol rug with two magazines that indicate something different is afoot—one, a 13+1 and the other, a flush 10+1 capacity magazine. This is a significant improvement over the G43’s 6-round magazine with the CR920P maintaining nearly the same dimensions of the G43, including height and width. This capacity increase is wrought by proprietary metal Shadow Systems magazines. The magazine redesign is necessary for the CR920 to achieve Shadow System’s higher capacity goal. With that said, you are not going to be jamming G43, G26, or any other GLOCK pattern magazine into your CR920 Elite. Calm your rising angst as extra Shadow System CR920 magazines are available for $26 to $28.

A variety of 9mm loads were tested with the CR920P, including Norma, Federal, Hornady, SIG Sauer and Black Hills Ammunition. The CR920P was fired one handed, including use of the non-dominant hand, to verify there was no sensitivity in terms of reliability. Premium self-defense JHP, target, and match 9mm loads including 108-, 115-, 124-, and 147-grain bullets were used. The CR920P digested anything fed to it.

ON POINT FOR CCW

The CR920P is a near perfect blending of concealed carry compactness while maintaining performance. The ability to mount a red dot only increases its appeal. With that said, I was somewhat surprised by my preference of keeping the CR920P iron-sighted. This stems from maintaining as compact a profile as possible. I found under the right circumstances the CR920P could be considered for pocket carry, especially without a red dot mounted. This is quite an upgrade over any of the miniature 380 ACPs on the market.

Galco’s Front Pocket Horsehide, Quicktuk Cloud, Blakguard belt, and Underwrap Elite belly bland allowed for exploring what the CR920 Elite offered as an ultra-concealable handgun.

Various Galco holsters were not only incorporated into range testing, but also incorporated inyou a daily concealed carry routine with the CR920P. Galco’s Front Pocket Horsehide, Quicktuk Cloud, Blakguard belt, and Underwrap Elite belly band allowed for exploring what the CR920P offered as an ultra-concealable handgun. I am not about to decide what is the best way to carry the Shadow Systems CR920P for others, as everyone has their own ideas on balancing concealment with practical carry.

Scenarios involving plate racks and dueling trees were run. Engaging targets from behind cover or on the move was incorporated into testing. Magazine changes were done for the dual purpose of getting a feel of manipulating CR920P and verifying how quickly it could get back on target. Speaking of magazines, Shadow Systems attention to detail is found here, too. The 13-round magazine’s extension features the same texture on its front pad as the grip providing a comfy spot for your pinky finger. The rear of the 13-round magazine’s basepad is notched to accommodate the lengthened backstrap. With the 10-round magazine, the backstrap extends below the rear of the magazine eliminating a possible pinch point.

Compensators are expanding beyond competition applications becoming more prominent with personal defense weapons.
The Shadow Systems CR920P balances size to firepower for the concealed carry practitioner. The ability to mount a red dot will only add to its appeal. The Shadow Systems CR920P is a compact handgun that pushes the envelope past norms, while still maintaining real world application. The CR920P increases the effectiveness of a compact handgun beyond what most thought capable.

By Todd Burgreen –

There is no doubt about the popularity and acceptance of polymer striker-fired handguns. It seems end users and arms makers both win. The quick adoption of striker-fired weapons for LE and military use bears this out. From a manufacturer perspective, polymer-framed, strike-fired handguns are less expensive to produce and require minimal hand fitting while still offering impressive performance.

Hammer-fired single action only “cocked and locked” handguns have not faded quietly into the sunset, though. In fact, the case can be made this format is actually flourishing. Why? The mystique of a well put together single action semi-automatic handgun is hard to deny in our current polymer striker-fired age. A trigger with minimal-to-no-creep, limited travel/reset, and a break like the proverbial “glass rod” is hard to resist. All of these things become magnified as knowledge and skills are gained in the quest to run a handgun with ruthless efficiency. The performance offered in these aficionado weapons justify their place as a valid choice.

The SIG P229 Legion SAO is similar in size to commander-sized 1911s and performs out-of-the-box reliably with a high degree of accuracy. (Photo: Todd Burgreen)

While SIG Sauer has become a standard-bearer for the polymer striker-fired genre with its P320 and P365 series, SIG is still representing with 1911, P210, and P220/226/229 family of metal-framed hammer-fired weapons. A little-known SIG Sauer decision made circa 2006 was to offer a single-action-only trigger option to shooters with certain models of the P220/226/229 family. The P229 Legion SAO is one such example and the focus of this article.

Legion Features

The SIG P229 Legion SAO RXP is a compact variant of SIG’s classic P226 model. The Legion designation carries extra weight in SIG world. Legion nomenclature indicates SIG upgrading of an established product based on feedback from SIG Sauer’s elite professional clients around the world. A Legion weapon is intended for customers who rigorously use their gear.

What sets the P229 Legion SAO apart from its other P229 stable mates? First, is the Cerakote Elite Legion gray coating covering the stainless-steel slide and aluminum frame. This is not merely window dressing; the coating improves durability. Custom G-10 grips with a Legion medallion are also present. The single-action-only (SAO) trigger is what focused my attention on the P229 Legion SAO. The P229 Legion SAO offers the best of the P229 design with preferred trigger profile. Icing on the cake is the P229 Legion featuring a flat style trigger shoe versus curved. This offers a 90-degree lever for better geometry and lowers the probability of pulling to the right or left during shots.

SIG XRay3 day/night irons arrive on the P229 Legion SAO RXP. The slide is factory milled if user wants to mount a red dot. (Photo: Todd Burgreen)

The superior SIG XRay3 day/night irons arrive on the P229 Legion SAO. Don’t worry, the slide is factory milled if you want to mount a red dot. Ambidextrous manual safeties are present on the P229 Legion SAO in lieu of a de-cocking lever that’s usually found on the P226/9 models. There’s some strong nostalgic feelings attached the P229 Legion SAO’s exposed cocked and locked hammer. The swiping down/deactivating of safety the lever brought me back to my early days of training with a single action handgun.

Compact Without Compromise

SIG realized that a more compact P226 design would help them attract even more consumers, especially considering the expanding concealed carry laws spreading across the country. Thus, the P229 was born. The P220/6’s history and track record of proven performance on the battlefield (and the street) grant the P229 Legion SAO instant credibility. The P229 Legion’s compact profile makes it ideal for concealed carry, especially with inside-the-waistband carry techniques. Someone who is a practitioner of concealed carry quickly realizes that length, grip size, overall weight, and width of a pistol are the key defining parameters for discrete carry handguns.

The P229 Legion’s aluminum frame, stainless slide, and 3.9-inch barrel add up to a weight of only 31 oz. While the safety lever is located within natural thumb swipe distance, the slide lock sits further toward the rear of the frame compared to other weapons. This all but eliminates the chance of unintentionally engaging the slide lock during strings of fire as can happen when shooters rest their thumb on the lever with other designs.

The SIG P229 Legion SAO is a compact variant of the classic P226 model. (Photo: SIG Sauer)

Another nod to the P229 Legion SAO’s more modern design when compared to the 1911 is the safety’s ability to stay engaged while manipulating the slide. The P229 Legion features a contoured reduced profile beavertail allowing for better hand placement on the frame while limiting the concern of printing through cover garments. The beavertail’s protrusion from the frame guides one’s hand to the optimum grip position during the draw stroke and aids in recoil management. More aggressive front strap checkering and additional checkering under the trigger guard enhance grip purchase. An undercut has been applied below the trigger guard, allowing for a higher grip and more control when firing, especially during rapid shot strings.

The P229 Legion’s shorter barrel/slide maintains optimum mix of sight radius, concealment, balance, and reliability. The SIG XRay3 day/night irons compliment the P229 Legion’s intended role as a concealed carry weapon. The P229 Legion’s SAO’s 3.9-inch cold hammer-forged barrel and short reset, single-action trigger combined with near perfect lock-up in the stainless-steel slide ensure maximum reliability and accuracy performance. The SIG single-action trigger pull measured 3.5-4 pounds. The aluminum frame features a Picatinny rail-equipped dust cover for tactical versatility in the way of lights and laser target designators.

Range Time

No weapon’s reliability should be blindly trusted without confirming its function, especially if used for personal defense. The SIG P229 Legion SAO had no issue performing straight out of the box. The first range session consisted of over 200 rounds without cleaning or adding lubricant. Firing was at a relatively steady pace with different shooters running the P229 Legion thru its paces on plate racks, dueling trees, and other drills. Considering that the P229 Legion’s design intent as an everyday carry handgun, we decided to dedicate some time evaluating around vehicles, breaching facades, door entries, and other CQB activities. Echo Valley Training Center’s onsite Hesco Shoot House and 360 Range were ideal test locations. The natural pointability of the P229 Legion comes into its own in this realm. The single-action only trigger is a key component in this equation. The single action trigger aids in rapid target engagement with minimal trigger reset. The SIG slide/barrel combination contributes more mass, aiding in increased muzzle control for double taps or longer strings of fire.

PERFORMANCE

LOAD

VELOCITY AVG.

ACCURACY@25yds

Federal 124gr HST

1070fps

1.75 in.

SIG SAUER 124gr V Crown

1164fps

1.25 in.

Hornady 147gr XTP

915fps

1.33 in.

Black Hills 115gr JHP EXP

1140fps

2 in.

A variety of 9mm loads were tested with the P229 Legion including Federal HST, Speer Gold Dot, Hornady XTP, SIG V-Crown & FMJ, and Black Hills Ammunition JHP & FMJ. An ammunition can featuring a smorgasbord of random brands and types was also used. Loads fired spanned 115- to 147-grain. The P229 Legion SAO handled all brands, bullet types, and weights with equal aplomb. P229’s ergonomics and handling characteristics are quickly appreciated and make a user understand why the P229 is well thought of. The overall balance of the P229 Legion SAO made recoil no more an issue than a full size P226. Even under the induced stress of drawing against a timer and engaging multiple targets, the manual safety was always positively disengaged. No malfunctions were experienced while test firing over 650 rounds during range visits.

A variety of 9mm loads were tested with the P229 Legion, including Speer Gold Dot, Hornady XTP, SIG V-Crown, and Black Hills Ammunition JHP. (Photo: Todd Burgreen)

The SIG P229 Legion SAO did not disappoint, regularly producing 2- to 3-inch groups at 25 yards when fired from standing, unsupported positions. Bench testing could not be resisted after witnessing the unsupported accuracy results. Under 2-inch groups at 25 yards were not unusual.

The P229 Legion SAO was tested in various holsters from VersaCarry and Galco. Flexibility is the key to effective carry practices with Inside-the-Waistband (IWB) Concealable from Galco and Comfort Flex Deluxe from VersaCarry. The SIG P229 Legion did not feel out of place or uncomfortable in either the VersaCarry or Galco IWB even when carried for lengthy stretches of time going about daily business. The Decree belt holster from VersaCarry and Royal Guard from Galco had the P229 Legion riding comfortably on the hip.

Inside-the-Waistband (IWB) Concealable from Galco and Royal Guard belt holster from Galco had the P229 Legion riding comfortably.
Hammer Fired Single Action Only Evolution

One could argue the single-action only SIGs such as the P229 are the natural evolution of the 1911 design, especially with the number of high-capacity 9mm 1911s becoming available. The P229 Legion SAO is at a price point many custom-tuned 1911 aficionadas can appreciate.

The P229 Legion SAO easily fits the concealed carry and personal defense roles, especially if a polymer-framed, striker-fired model is not your thing. For example, the P229 Legion equipped with a light/laser on its forward rail is as good a nightstand handgun as there is. Size comparison of the P229 Legion SAO to the commander-sized 1911 should quell any concerns of those that may think the SIG is too large. The SIG P229 Legion SAO is ideal for anyone wanting to capitalize on the SIG Sauer reputation for out-of-the-box reliability and accuracy combined with single action trigger for utmost control and precise shot placement.

Stoeger has been in the firearms business since after WWI when Austrian immigrant Alexander F. Stoeger opened his shop on 5th Avenue in New York City. What started as a mail order enterprise for firearms and accessories – ahh, the good ol’ days of gun ownership in the U.S. – turned into the largest retailer of firearms and accessories in New York City. Between WWI and WWII, Stoeger was the exclusive importer of Mauser bolt-action rifles, as well as Luger handguns. Stoeger also dabbled in manufacturing with .22LR conversion kits for Colt 1911s and other items.

Brand Story

An interesting footnote is how Stoeger’s comprehensive mail order catalogue morphed into the yearly industry reference guide known as The Shooter’s Bible. By the mid-1950’s, Stoeger had closed its New York City retail showroom and moved operations to New Jersey. Stoeger was busy with publishing efforts as well as importing Finnish Sako, Brazilian IGA, and Spanish Llama brands of weapons. Stoeger became well known for its firearm manufacturing and importing. These efforts gave U.S. consumers opportunities to own types of weapons that would not normally be available from domestic manufacturers or other importers.

In 1994, Finnish firearm-maker Sako became Stoeger’s majority owner. When Sako was bought by Beretta in 2000, Stoeger was moved to Accokeek, Maryland, joining another Beretta Holding company, Benelli. Stoeger’s line of shotgun imports melded well with Benelli, Franchi, and Uberti products. The Beretta acquisition did end Stoeger’s publishing efforts – a major aspect of Stoeger’s business up to that point. The Shooter’s Bible and other Stoeger publications continue under different ownership today.

More Than Just Shotguns

While inertia-driven shotguns from Turkey are some of Stoeger’s most well-known products, in 2019 Stoeger began offering consumers a polymer, striker-fired handgun option with their STR-9 series. The STR-9s pistols are made and imported from Stoeger’s Turkish factory connection. With the STR-9 models, Stoeger has embraced the obvious popularity of polymer-framed, striker-fired, high-capacity, semi-automatic handguns. We are going to focus on one of the most recent pistols in the Stoeger STR-9 lineup, the STR-9C Optic Ready (STR-9COR). This is not the 1980’s when people doubted the staying power of the Austrian Glock. Looking back, this sentiment seems absurd; especially considering how quickly striker-fired handguns came to dominate the law enforcement and civilian personal defense market.

Layout

Stoeger’s imported STR-9C Optic Ready with ability to easily mount a red dot (Ameriglo Haven shown here) is a viable modern candidate for personal defense with a price that makes it even more attractive.

The STR-9COR follows the common operating path shared by most polymer striker-fired handguns – a polymer frame with a pinned steel chassis that interfaces with the slide during reciprocation. The STR-9COR’s nitride-treated slide has wide front and rear serrations aiding in slide manipulation, no matter the conditions. Fixed 3-dot sights come as standard. (More on the sighting system options to follow.) Molded finger grooves and modular backstraps allow the end-user to better fit the STR-9COR to their hand. Grip texture on the backstrap is more aggressive than typically found on competing pistols – a positive. The magazine release button is reversible and the slide stop lever is found, predictably, on the left side of the frame. Stoeger has undercut the trigger guard allowing for a lower center of gravity in your hand. This helps minimize muzzle flip. A squared-off trigger guard and Picatinny rail dustcover for mounting lights/lasers finishes off the aesthetics. The weight is 24 ounces and overall length is 6.9-inches. A 13-round magazine comes as standard. An MSRP of $399 is impressive considering the features present on the pistol.

Action

The Stoeger STR-9COR employs the familiar Browning locked-breech short-recoil tilting-barrel operating method. The 3.8-inch barrel locks up tight when in battery. As is the case with modern semi-autos, Stoeger slightly modifies Browning’s design by moving the locking recess from the barrel, instead milling a single locking lug above the barrel chamber and using the slide’s large, overhead ejection port as its mating locking recess. The front contour of the barrel lug cam slot has been cut square to direct counter-recoiling forces up and forward into the barrel itself. This reduces stress on the lug.

Optic Ready

The Stoeger STR-9C Optic Ready continues the evolution of the Stoeger handgun product line here in the U.S. The pistol offers the ability to mount various red dot sights straight from the factory without having to resort to a gunsmith to mill the slide. This is accomplished with four adapter plates.

The pistol embraces the growing trend of mounting red dot sights on personal defense handguns. It offers the ability to mount various red dot sights straight from the factory without having to resort getting the slide milled. This is accomplished with four adapter plates that accommodate various red dot footprints such Trijicon’s RMR, Vortex’s Venom, Leupold’s DeltaPoint, SIG Sauer’s ROMEO1PRO, and more. A blank plate covers the rear receiver when no red dot is used. The plate mates seamlessly to the slide. Having a slide milled for specific sight limits your flexibility in choosing various red dots. The Stoeger’s mounting plate method is a great solution that provides mounting options for many of the most popular pistol optics.

The ability to easily mount a red dot separate the STR-9COR from other entry level striker-fired handguns. There is no resisting the momentum of handguns featuring red dot sights. Competition handguns have sported enhanced sights, albeit red dots or magnified optics, for decades now. These competition examples featured red dots that were big and ungainly affairs with complex, often custom mounts resulting in a package that’s less than ideal for everyday carry. This is not the case with the current state of RDS offerings. A perfect example of this is the Ameriglo Haven red dot mounted on the STR-9COR.

Ameriglo Haven

Ameriglo’s Haven red dot optic uses a Trijicon RMR footprint. The side-loading battery is a nice touch, meaning you don’t have to remove the Haven from the slide to change its CR2032 battery. This eliminates the need to sight back in after battery replacement. Smart electronics offer a 12-hour runtime followed by a 12-hour, motion-activated auto-on and provide up to two years of battery life at a mid-level brightness setting. A large viewing window with an upward-curving concave housing with highlighted vertical white post on the rear of Haven sight aids in faster dot acquisition. The Haven used for this T&E featured a 3.5 MOA dot. A 5 MOA dot is available, as well.

The Ameriglo Haven’s large viewing window with upward curving concave housing with highlighted vertical white post on the rear of Haven sight aids in faster dot acquisition.

Users of the Haven-equipped will find they no longer have to switch focus from target to sights and invariably eliminate the front sight focus that’s so difficult for older shooters to naturally maintain when using iron sights. Handgunners with a red dot-equipped weapon can now do as nature intended – focus on the threat/target. Moreover, because the indexing of a red dot is far easier than two separate protruding pieces of steel, you’ll find you can take shots beyond what’s considered possible with iron sights. Hitting steel at 75 yards is very possible with this setup, as well as running CQB drills that were once considered impractical to run, all simply because the RDS concept uses the eyes in a more normal manner. The Stoeger’s trigger pull is what we have come to expect from factory striker-fired weapons — 6 pounds with a consistent break.

Range Time

The Stoeger STR-9COR with a red dot optic is a great answer to the concealed carry practitioner wanting a handgun with maximum capability.

Range testing of the Stoeger/Ameriglo combo took place at Echo Valley Training Center. The Haven red dot offered the capability to engage multiple targets rapidly with faster target transition compared to open sights… while providing superior accuracy at ranges beyond normal iron sight engagement distances. Longer shots are possible thanks to the precision afforded by the sight’s small dot not obscuring the target. As many shooters can attest, working with the red dot’s single plane of focus is easier to shoot accurately than coordinating front and rear sights. The Stoeger’s mounting bracket mechanism and the attached Haven sight withstood the recoil and heat generated by repeated, long strings of fire. The Haven weighs only 1.6 ounces which contributes to its ability to withstand the inertial forces of the reciprocating slide.

We evaluated the STR-9COR using several shooting drills, included working around breaching facades, door entries, and other CQB activities. In these drills, a premium is placed on a quick-handling, accurate handgun with multiple rounds fired in quick succession. The natural pointability of the STR-9COR comes into its own in this realm with the Haven red dot proving advantageous. Both eyes open with a red dot superimposing “on target” information is hard to beat.

First round hits were the norm on the various steel targets, plate racks, and dueling trees. The STR-9COR combined with the Ameriglo Haven regularly produced 3.5-inch groups at 25 yards when fired from standing unsupported positions. Ammunition from Black Hills Ammunition, Remington, Speer and SIG Sauer was used. The ammunition fired spanned 115- to 147-grain and included hollow point and FMJ loads. Significantly, no malfunctions were experienced while firing more than 320 rounds.

Conclusion

The ability to easily mount a red dot optic on the Stoeger STR-9C Optic Ready increases the effectiveness of a handgun beyond what most thought capable.

Stoeger’s STR-9C Optic Ready pistol offers a reasonably priced platform that allow users to explore the benefits of red dot optics on a legitimate concealed carry platform without remorse in terms of cost. If the decision is made against pursuing the red dot path you still have a potent, compact, striker-fired weapon at your disposal.
