The rifle submitted to SAR for test and evaluation is the LAR-47 Delta series, which included the MIL-STD-1913 quad rail.

By Christopher R. Bartocci

Over the years, there have been several manufacturers who have attempted to make (and some that still make) AR-platform rifles chambered in the 7.62x39mm caliber. It would only make sense since the M43 Soviet round has proven its mettle all over the globe. There are many out there who love the power of the 7.62x39mm round, but not the AK-series rifle that shoots it. Let’s face it, the AK is not known for its accuracy, human engineering or quality. Saying that, the rifles are nearly indestructible in terms of reliability. But putting that round into an AR-platform takes care of the accuracy, human engineering and quality issues. Reliability, well, the AK will still have that edge. In the commercial market, 7.62x39mm is inexpensive for target shooting purposes and is capable of taking down medium-size game, such as deer. Ballistics are quite similar between 7.62x39mm and the ever popular 30-30 Win cartridge.

Rock River Arms model LAR-47 Coyote. Notice the RRA NSP-6 pos CAR stock, Hogue grip, rifle-length RRA Deluxe extended free float rail and Smith Enterprises Vortex flash suppressor.

The biggest problem encountered in the industry with trying to put the 7.62x39mm cartridge in the AR-platform is the magazine well/magazine. The taper of the 7.62x39mm cartridge case is significantly more than that of the 5.56x45mm cartridge case. That causes a significant difference in the shape of the cartridge stack in the magazine. The “banana” appearance of the AK magazine is not designed for cosmetics, it’s shaped that way because of the way the cartridges stack in the magazine due to the taper on the cartridge case. When these rounds are put into the straight magazine of the AR family of weapons, the rounds tend to nose dive below the barrel extension or even in the magazine itself. Several companies have worked on this throughout the last 30 years or so. In this author’s opinion, nobody has been able to make a combat reliable 7.62x39mm magazine that will fit into a standard AR-type receiver. With all of this failure, why keep trying? Reed Knight of Knight’s Armament was the first to remedy this problem with the development of the SR-47. At the request of SOCOM, a couple of the industry partners developed rifles to shoot this caliber. Reed Knight changed the magazine well to take the standard AK magazine. From a logistical standpoint, it made perfect sense. Proper feeding from a combat tried and proven magazine (in a weapon the military would be familiar with) would give much more flexibility than the AK series. The soldier would be able to pick up ammo from the enemy on the battlefield and use the magazines and ammo in his rifle if resupply was not imminent. After the designs were shown to SOCOM they said thank you, ran some tests and then dropped the program. Reed Knight never put his SR-47 into production, but people saw what he did and saw the merits. There are now a few companies out there that are manufacturing lower receivers to accept the standard AK magazine including MGI (Hydra), CMMG MK-47 MUTANT and the Rock River Arms LAR-47.

Shown is the Rock River Arms model LAR-47 X- Series X-1 rifle. Notice the RRA Operator CAR stock, Hogue pistol grip, RRA TRO-XL Extended Free Floating Handguard and RRA BEAST muzzle brake.

At the 2012 SHOT Show, Rock River Arms showed the first prototypes to the industry. It would not be until early- to mid-2014 that they would ship the first rifles to dealers. The LAR-47 is a different rifle than what has been seen in the past. The upper and lower receivers are both designed specifically for the LAR-47. The lower accepts the AK-type magazine. The upper is slightly wider to accept the wider magazine. Early prototype rifles were designed with receivers manufactured from solid billets of 7075 T6 aircraft aluminum. For the rifles to enter production, the receivers would be manufactured from forgings of 7075 T6 aluminum. Rock River Arms felt that forgings were the way to go for high volume production of the rifle.

The first model was the LAR-47 CAR A4. This is a basic model with an MSRP of $1,270. The LAR-47 CAR A4 weighs 6.4 pounds and has an overall length of 36 inches. Beginning in the rear of the rifle and moving forward, the CAR A4 is equipped with the standard Rock River Arms Tactical Stock, which is a branded version of the standard military stock. The receiver extension has six positions for the stock. The lower receiver is the LAR-47 lower with a standard A2-style pistol grip. There is no bolt catch on the LAR-47. This does not work well with the standard AK magazine follower. Safety lever is the standard left side and the trigger guard is an LAR-47 specific version of the Rock River Arms Winter Trigger Guard. The magazine release differs from that of the AK. It is much easier to use and it offers the shooter two different way to actuate the magazine release. First, the shooter can use his trigger finger to push inward on the release to disengage the magazine. The shooter can also use his thumb to disengage the catch while grasping the magazine. The trigger provided is a Rock River Arms Two Stage Trigger. The test and evaluation rifle broke at 5 3/4 pounds. There was little to no creep on the second stage. The power of the hammer spring was sufficient to fire the hardest Russian primers. This has become a challenge for some of the AR-platform rifles firing the 7.62x39mm ammo. Both Tula and WOLF ammunition were fired without any issues of light strikes.

The LAR-47 Delta model is equipped with the Rock River Arms Two Stage Match Trigger Group.

The upper receiver is similar to the A4/M4 configuration. It has a flat top MIL-STD-1913 rail on top. The receiver has a forward bolt assist as well as a fired cartridge case deflector. The upper also features the standard ejection port cover. There is a new feature found on the upper receiver and bolt carrier: an indicator line on both. When aligned, there is a visual indication that the bolt is fully locked. If the indicator lines are not aligned, the bolt is not locked. According to Rock River Arms, this feature may be added to other product lines. The barrel is held on with a standard barrel nut with a Delta Slip Ring assembly. Standard single heat shield handguards are used on the CAR A4 model. The gas block has a MIL-STD-1913 rail on top and is held on by two bolts.

The barrel is manufactured from 4140 steel and button cut with a 1 turn in 10 inch right hand twist. The CAR A4 has a 16-inch barrel which is hard chromed. Although this is standard on most 5.56mm barrels, this is most important on these 7.62x39mm barrels due to the fact that there is still corrosive 7.62x39mm ammunition in circulation. The chrome plating assists with some corrosion resistance and also extends barrel life. The hard chrome-plated barrel is about 4 times as hard as the standard barrel steel. When asked if the bimetal Eastern Bloc ammunition prematurely wore the barrels compared to copper jackets, Rock River Arms claimed, “We have not worn any barrels out yet, so we cannot say with any certainty. Steel cased ammo is, in general, harder on the extractor (and to a lesser extent the chamber) and the sealants that often go hand-in-hand with steel cased ammo can have negative effects on the bore, gas system, and eventually the gas rings but proper cleaning and maintenance can go a long way to prevent that.”

The front of the top of the lower receiver. You can see the camming pin for insertion of the magazine.

The muzzle device is a standard A2-style compensator. The bolt and carrier are chrome plated. Designers at Rock River Arms designed it this way due to the corrosive nature of some of the 7.62x39mm ammunition still in circulation. They claim the chrome bolt and carrier help to offset this a bit by making them easier to clean and providing a protective layer over the actual bolt and carrier materials (bolt is Carpenter 158 and bolt carrier is 8620 tool steel).

The second model (the one sent to SAR for test and evaluation) is the Rock River Arms LAR-47 Delta Carbine. This rifle has a weight of 7.75 pounds and a overall length of 36.5 inches. There are three differences between this and the basic LAR-47 CAR A4. The first difference is the stock. Instead of the Tactical CAR stock, a Delta CAR stock is provided. This is a rather unique stock. There are two QD sling attachment points and a sling loop on the rear inside of the stock. On the lower tube of the sling is a MIL-STD-1913 rail for sling mounts or other accessories. On the lower part of the butt is a removable O-ring sealed cap for storage of batteries. The second difference is the pistol grip is a Ergo rubber grip. The third is a Rock River Arms two piece Quad MIL-STD-1913 rail. There are five QD sling attachment points. The vent holes are small so the shooter will not touch a hot barrel accidentally. The rifle comes standard with the Rock River Arms Two Stage Trigger. The MSRP is $1,545.

The third model is the Rock River Arms LAR-47 Tactical Comp. This differs from the CAR A4 because it has the Operator CAR stock. The ribbed butt plate can be slid downward, revealing two O-ring sealed battery compartments. There are four QD detachable sling points. The pistol grip is the Rock River Arms NSP Overmolded A2 grip. The rifle comes standard with the Rock River Arms Two Stage Trigger and the gas block is replaced with a Rock River Arms Flip Front Sight Gas Block Assembly. This assembly has an integral tactical rail in the location of the bayonet lug along with 3 sling swivels. The rail is the free floating Rock River Arms Quad aluminum handguard. MSRP is $1,500.

Shown: Rock River Arms Delta CAR stock featured on the LAR-47 Delta model.

There are two newly introduced models in 2015. The first is the Rock River Arms Coyote Carbine. This rifle has an overall length of 38 inches and weighs 7.8 pounds. This differs from the CAR A4 in a few ways as well. The buttstock on this model is the Rock River Arms NSP stock and a Hogue rubber pistol grip. The rifle comes standard with the Rock River Arms Two Stage Trigger. There is a low profile gas block and a Rock River Arms Deluxe Extended Free Float handguard, which is rifle length. The muzzle device is the Smith Enterprises Vortex flash suppressor. MSRP is $1,740.

Second is the Rock River Arms X-Series X-1 Rifle, which uses a Rock River Arms Operator A2 or a Operator CAR stock and a Hogue rubber pistol grip. The muzzle device is a Hunter Muzzle Brake or a Rock River Arms BEAST. The rifle’s barrel is an 18 inch long, bead blasted, fluted stainless steel heavy barrel. The handguard is the TRO-XL Extended Length Free Float Rail with a low profile gas block. Also standard: the Rock River Arms Two Stage Trigger. This rifle has a weight of 8.2 pounds and an overall length of 39 inches. MSRP is $1,600 to $1,650.

The test & evaluation LAR-47 Delta was in excellent condition. Fit and finish were superb. The chrome plated bolt and bolt carrier is an excellent enhancement. The magazines tested were the Thermold magazine the rifle was supplied with and various Russian and East German steel magazines. A Soviet Bakelite and Chinese Bakelite were also tested. All went in and out of the magazine well without issue and locked securely. The rail was impressive in that it came with 5 QD sling mounting points including on the end of the bottom rail. While looking the rifle over, the only real critique this author could offer is the location of the charging handle. Most users of the M16/M4 series rifle only use the charging handle for initial loading and malfunction clearing. On all other reloads, the bolt catch is used. With the LAR-47, every time you want to reload you must un-shoulder the rifle, replace the magazine with a loaded one and then change your hand grip to retract the charging handle to load the rifle and then re-shoulder. If the charging handle was moved to the side of the bolt, same as the standard AK, time could be saved without having to un-shoulder and re-shoulder the rifle during reloads.

Shown is the RRA Delta Quad Rail. This is available in carbine as well as mid length. On the end of the rail is the A.R.M.S., Inc. #40L-F folding front sight.

Prior to test fire, two things were added: rail protectors and an optic. The handguard is manufactured from aluminum. Without a vertical grip, those handguards tend to heat up quickly. Added to the handguards were Manta rail protectors on the 3:00, 6:00 and 12:00 positions. The Manta rails covers are not your typical rail protectors. They insulate the shooter’s hand from extreme temperatures caused by continuous firing. The material is so strong that if you hold a cigarette lighter to its material directly, the material will not burn. One of their sound suppressor sleeves was subjected to the extreme heat of a propane torch. The material never caught fire. There was some ash on the surface of the sleeve, which was shaken off, and the sleeve worked as designed. When most people look at a rail protector they think just that, a protector. The Manta rail protectors do much more. They will also hide an IR signature. The suppressor sleeve works so well that one could fire 100 rounds out of an M4 on fully automatic and hold the rifle bare handed by the suppressor sleeve.

The optic chosen for this rifle was just introduced at SHOT Show 2015 by D.I. Optical USA. This particular model is their EG1 prism gun sight. This sight is mounted on an A.R.M.S., Inc. #17 throw lever mount. The body is manufactured from billet of aircraft-quality 6061 T6 aluminum and anodized black. The intensity of the red dot is adjustable by the large knob on the left side of the sight. The knob is large enough for one to be able to operate with heavy gloves on. The T&E model is equipped with two glare-reducing rubber hoods. The sight has passed MIL-STD-810G testing and is submersible to 30 feet. The lens is 30mm in diameter with 1x magnification. 1 click of adjustment is 24mm at 100 meters (Dot Only) / 1 MOA. The dot size is 2.5 MOA. The overall dimensions of the sight are 48mm x 53mm x 62mm. The sight is night vision capable. The range of adjustment is 150 clicks. Adjustment for elevation and windage are made on the right side with a coin or screwdriver.

During firing, there were no misfires or malfunctions of any form. 500 rounds of WOLF 122gr FMJ and 100 rounds of Federal American Eagle 124gr FMJ were used. Testing was conducted at the Van Road Gun Range in Houston, Texas. Firing at 50 yards revealed a just under 1.5 group firing from a rest with the D.I. Optical red dot sight. The best groups were all made with the Federal American Eagle ammunition.

Anyone who loves the 7.62x39mm cartridge but isn’t fond of all of the lower accuracy and the human engineering of the AK family of rifles now has a choice in an AR-type rifle that fires the cartridge they like and is in a proper magazine for the caliber. The AR-based 7.62x39mm magazines have always been a weak point in the reliability of the gun. With the use of the standard AK magazine, that problem is solved. The price is comparable to most high-quality black rifles as well.

The search for the “perfect” rifle and cartridge combination is the impetus of many gun designers and manufacturers; this search motivated Stoner himself back in the early 1960s. Of late, the most attention seems to be on “improving” the AR platform via developing piston-driven ARs in lieu of Stoner’s original gas-impingement design. Rock River Arms (RRA) has approached the AR from a different angle than just tweaking the AR operating system. One way Rock River Arms seeks to improve the AR platform rests on calibers chambered other than the 5.56mm. Rock River Arms features AR models chambered in 7.62x51mm/.308Win, 9mm, .40 S&W, 6.8 SPC, .458 SOCOM, and most recently 7.62×39.

Rock River Arms (RRA) was founded in 1996 by brothers Mark and Chuck Larson. The Larson brothers combine over 40 years of experience in the firearm business into RRA. Unfortunately, Mark passed away in early 2013. Their initial product focus consisted of custom 1911 pistols before turning their attention to AR style rifles. The attention to detail associated with creating Match-grade 1911s was soon transferred over to AR production methods. RRA’s goal with the AR style rifle is the utmost reliability combined with accuracy; thus wringing the most out of Stoner’s original design. These two objectives are often at odds with each other. The tight tolerances associated with accuracy can hinder reliability if not applied properly. By improving fit and finish, including the use of a forged receiver, RRA sets itself apart from the majority of AR manufacturers in existence today. RRA quality control was quickly rewarded within only a few years of emerging on the AR scene. RRA’s operating methodology was quickly brought to the forefront by winning contracts to provide RRA AR rifles to DEA and FBI law enforcement agencies. This has been followed since with other contracts with Federal, State, and local law enforcement entities.

Slight radius cuts behind where the firing pin rests in the carrier group are one difference with the chromed LAR 47 bolt carrier compared to a Mil Spec AR-15/M16 bolt carrier.

The exponential growth of AR popularity and Rock River Arms’ involvement in this progression is impressive. Rock River Arms definitely has “skin” in the AR game with numerous models and calibers in its product line-up. Our focus for this review is the RRA 7.62×39 LAR 47. Word emerged as early as 2012 about the RRA LAR 47 with product reaching dealer shelves in mid 2014. This delay was surely a result of the AR craze the industry went through during that time frame as well as Mark’s unexpected death.

RRA is an industry leader well known for producing a full line of high quality AR-15 style rifles. The LAR 47 is a hybrid design that combines the versatility and ergonomics of the AR-style platform with the popularity and hard hitting nature of the AK 7.62×39 chambering. Most importantly it accepts steel and select polymer AK47 magazines compared to other ARs chambered in 7.62×39 that take proprietary magazines. The RRA LAR 47 uses forged A4 upper and lower receivers. RRA decided to use the direct impingement (DI) AR operating method in lieu of the piston option with the LAR 47. This is intriguing as RRA features each operating method in its product line up. Some will have concerns with the DI operation and increased fouling in the receiver area magnified when using surplus 7.62×39 ammunition. This is addressed by Rock River Arms by chroming the barrel and bolt carrier group.

Multiple magazine types were tested for compatibility with the RRA LAR 47. Steel magazines worked without issue; polymer magazines were problematic with only the variant shipped with the rifle viable.

Two different model configurations of the LAR 47 are available: CAR A4 and Delta Carbine. This article features the LAR 47 Delta Carbine. The LAR 47 Delta uses a 16 inch chrome-lined HBAR profile barrel with 1:10 RH twist. The LAR 47 Delta Carbine is equipped with many standard RRA components that include an A2 flash hider (5/8×24 threads) and RRA 2-stage trigger group. Other features included are oversized trigger guard and centrally located ambidextrous magazine release. It is equipped with an RRA Delta CAR adjustable stock and Delta pistol grip, along with RRA propriety 2-piece quad rail handguard forend. The LAR 47 Delta Carbine weighs approximately 7.75 pounds with an overall length of 36.5 inches with stock extended. The package from Rock River includes polymer AK47 magazine, hard case, manual and RRA limited life time warranty. RRA lists MSRP for the LAR 47 Delta Carbine as $1,475.

Rock River Arms had to tweak the typical 5.56mm AR upper and lower receivers for the LAR 47. Interestingly, RRA was able to maintain length and width of 5.56mm AR receivers. The lower receiver’s aesthetics is impacted by being engineered to accept the AK magazine. One of the less appreciated aspects of the AK design is how the front of the magazine is hooked into place and kept steady behind a wide feed ramp allowing the bullet a smooth path to the chamber. This is one factor contributing to the AKs reputation for reliability. The LAR 47’s magazine well is angled to facilitate the AK’s magazine hook-and-latch system, i.e., you insert the front of the magazine in first before rocking it back and locking it in place. Rock River took into account the interaction of steel AK magazines with the LAR 47’s aluminum lower receiver by installing a steel crosspin for the magazine to interact with.

Manipulation of the ambidextrous magazine release can be done with either hand as dictated by user preference.

The LAR 47’s receivers had to be modified to make room for the wider and longer feed lips of the AK magazine. The same was done for the bolt carrier. The barrel extension feed ramps were tweaked to accommodate the 7.62×39 cartridge in the LAR 47. Rock River Arms dealt with the associated hard primer strike required for surplus 7.62×39 ammunition by using a heavier hammer spring and modifying the bolt carrier group geometry. The LAR 47 utilizes standard AR-15 buffer and spring.

Multiple AK magazines were tried with the LAR 47 including polymer US Palm, Magpul, Tapco, Bulgarian smooth and waffle, IO Inc., and surplus steel magazines. Even drum magazines were tested. Steel AK magazines worked without issue. On the polymer magazine front, only the AK magazine shipped with the LAR 47 functioned properly. The Magpul PMAG 30 AK inserted and removed smoothly, however this proved a false indicator as functioning was not possible due to the bolt group dragging along its feed lips. The other polymer magazines had issues inserting and locking into the LAR 47’s magazine well. Romanian and Chinese 75-round drum magazines were also a no go. The lesson here is to function test any magazine considered for use with the LAR 47. While there is definitely no shortage of steel AK magazines available for purchase, the inability to utilize multiple types of AK magazines will not be well received in many quarters of rifledom.

LAR 47. FIREClean CLP is a possible option for users concerned with direct impingement fouling.

Since typical AK magazines do not have a follower designed to hold the bolt open after the last round is fired, Rock River eliminated the bolt catch mechanism on the LAR 47. This eased design constraints associated with the magazine well area reconfiguration and alleviated the need to intrude into the trigger housing for space; thus enabling the use of Rock River Arms’ excellent two-stage AR trigger. The design approach further extends to the magazine release arrangement decided on by RRA. The angle of the AK magazine availed RRA the opportunity for a much larger trigger guard area. This allowed for a centrally located paddle release at the front of the trigger guard behind the magazine. The magazine release lever is ambidextrous.

It was decided to take full advantage of the RRA LAR 47’s flattop upper receiver by mounting a Trijicon TA 31 3x ACOG with horseshoe/dot reticle calibrated for 7.62×39 trajectory. The mounting of eye relief dependent optics is a weakness for the AK that the LAR 47 solves. A quick release mount was used with the ACOG. The mount is CNC machined from 6061 T6 aluminum and weighs only 2.7 ounces. The Trijicon ACOG offers the capability to engage multiple targets in rapid sequence compared to open sights, while at the same time providing accuracy at extended distances. The ACOG is a preferred optic for the U.S. Army and Marines. The Trijicon reticle superimposes an aim point on the target while not totally obscuring the target due to the center dot not being that large. The 7.62×39’s trajectory is conducive to making hits out to 300 yards without having to resort to excessive hold over; 3 inch high at 100 yards produces a 200 yard zero with 15 inches low at 300 yards.

Multiple 7.62×39 loads were tested with the RRA LAR 47 from Hornady, Wolf and Century’s Red Army Standard. A 50 yard accuracy test was chosen due to the ACOG’s 3x magnification. Wolf and Red Army Standard loads grouped into an inch at 50 yards. The Hornady 123 grain SST loads delivered accuracy in the 5/8 inch range at 50 yards. The RRA LAR 47 combined with quality optic mated to quality ammunition is a prime candidate for use as a general purpose rifle.

A Trijicon TA 31 3x ACOG was mounted via a quick release base.

Range testing commenced with functionality consisting of dumping multiple magazines at targets arrayed along Echo Valley Training Center’s (EVTC) multi-stepped berm in rapid fashion once the ACOG TA 31’s was zeroed. Iron sights are not part of the RRA LAR 47 package. If so desired, Magpul flip up sights are a solution and easily mountable on the upper rail. No problems were encountered with the Wolf and Red Army Standard 7.62×39 ammunition. While the RRA LAR 47 fired Hornady 123 grain SST the most accurately compared to other loads, the rifle had issues functioning with it. Fired rounds were ejected, but fresh rounds were not picked up and chambered. It can be surmised that the bolt was not cycling back far enough to strip the next round from the magazine. The same magazines were tested with the other ammunition with no issues encountered. After initial functioning test, the LAR 47 was then put through its paces on different courses of fire. Magazine changes, shooting from the non-dominant shoulder and unconventional positions around barricades helped to evaluate the LAR 47. Strings of fire ranged from 15 to 80 rounds with target distances measured in feet out to a couple hundred yards. A major focus with the direct impingement LAR 47 was maintaining reliability after hundreds of rounds fired, including magazine dumps and breaking contact drill scenarios. The Rock River Arms LAR 47 paid several visits to Echo Valley Training Center with several hundred rounds fired. As mentioned earlier in the article, particular attention was paid to fouling and carbon build up and if reliability was compromised. Purposely, the LAR 47 was used as it emerged from the box and not cleaned or lubed for the duration of this review. The only issues encountered with the RRA LAR 47 in terms of reliability centered on AK 47 magazines chosen for use and the Hornady ammunition.

A High Speed Gear patrol belt with their TACO magazine pouches supported T&E of the RRA LAR 47.

Further evaluation of the LAR 47 was based on training experiences derived from attendance at various training courses such as Pat McNamara, Suarez International, and Tactical Response. Team Tactic exercises involving moving to and from a designated target area using cover while either changing magazines or engaging targets when a partner is reloading are excellent weapon evaluation drills. One gets a good sense of the way a weapon handles along with reliability due to the sum of ammunition expended in short time frames characteristic of these types of drills. The full gamut of rifle manipulations are encompassed in Team Tactics training evolutions – handling around cover while engaging designated targets, accuracy to effectively strike at both distance and CQB ranges, magazine changes, and reliability once a weapon gets heated up.

High Speed Gear (HSG) Sure Grip patrol belt and TACO magazine pouches assisted with keeping steel AK magazines available. Many train and operate with multiple calibers either by choice or necessity. Others are tasked with training different weapon systems as part of their job description. The logistics of maintaining different belt systems or switching magazine pouches on one belt repeatedly is daunting. Imagine having to accommodate AR magazines one day, AK47 magazines the next, AR-10/SR-25 magazines, or AK74 magazines another time and so forth. Just as important in any transition between gear systems is making sure nothing affects magazine draw stroke muscle memory, pistol presentation or obtaining medical equipment. Accessing gear must remain seamless with no hitches caused due to different feel or location of pouches. High Speed Gear’s TACO magazine pouch was developed with this set of circumstances in mind. The HSG TACO magazine pouch eliminates the need for different gear per weapon magazine used and just as importantly keeps your items in familiar instinctual locations.

The Rock River Arms LAR 47 is a rifle that many will be interested in. This is based on the increasing popularity of the 7.62×39, especially when fed via AK47 magazines. Further supporting this is the better quality ammunition coming on line from manufactures combined with ability to securely mount optics on the railed upper receiver facilitating wringing the most out of the cartridge and platform.

Blackheart International Makes AR-
15 Handguard System

A fully loaded AR-15 forend may have a visual “cool” factor, but in the real world of tactical rifle deployment, overweight and Overburdened hand guard and rail systems can create serious problems. Excessive rails and attachments aren’t required for every operation. They add unneeded weight, minimize grip control and comfort, and add unnecessary surface area that can hang up on your gear when exiting a vehicle, clearing a room or deploying your backup weapon. Blackheart International’s new freefloat BHI-15 Hand Guard System offers a better solution: use only the accessory rails you need, when you need them. The improved BHI-15 Hand Guard System delivers additional features that make it simply the best AR-15 hand guard on the market today. It has a very slim profile of just 1 7/8 inches in diameter. It weighs just 9.16 ounces for the carbine model and 14 ounces for the rifle length unit. Made of billet aluminum, the BHI-
15 Hand Guard keeps the weight down when accessories are needed. Its freefloat design offers enhanced accuracy and cooling. The BHI-15 Hand Guard mounts directly onto the barrel nut allowing the entire barrel to free-float for maximum accuracy and heat dissipation.
It also features an aggressive GatorGrip checkering design along the grip portion of the tube that is both comfortable and provides
the most secure, sticks-likeglue grip you’ll find anywhere. The unit also has a Co-witnessed Top Rail so that it is now co-witnessed
(level) with the standard A3 upper receiver Picatinny rail. Backup sights can now be adjusted with no possibility of run-out on the
front post or rear peep. Other features include dual QD sling mount positions, and rail mounting slots at 45°, 90°, 135° and 180°. Several Picatinny rails are available for the BHI-15 Hand Guard: 1.5-, 2-, and 4-inch accessory rails, and 8.625-, 10.5- and 14-inch top
rails (depending on the hand guard model used). This allows the operator to select the exact rail size needed to accommodate lights, vertical grips and other accessories. The BHI-15 Hand Guard System is available in carbine-length (8.625-inch), mid-length (10.5-inch) and rifle-length (14-inch) configurations. The BHI-15 Hand Guard System is a universal fit on most 5.56mm NATO contoured barrels featuring a low-profile gas block. Simply remove the standard Delta ring and spring assembly from your conventional AR-style rifle and install the BHI-15 Hand Guard using the supplied two-piece clamp assembly.
New Products for AUG and MSAR from Manticore Arms

If you are tired of scraping and bloodying your knuckles trying to charge your Steyr AUG or MSAR rifle with an optic mounted, the Raptor Charging Handle by Manticore Arms solves this issue and provides benefits not found in the traditional charging handle. Manticore Arms, Inc., a developer of original firearm products from concept to market, has developed the Raptor Charging Handle as a specific solution for those tired of injuring themselves on the standard charging handle on the Steyr AUG and MSAR series of rifles. The horizontal design of the Raptor permits plenty of hand clearance even with a large optic such as an EOTech mounted on the low-height top Picatinny rail. The clearance is such that it can be pulled fully rearward and then folded upward to lock the bolt back, unlike the conventional handle. A quick slap of the Raptor levers it out of the rear lock back position, and the bolt goes home. The Manticore Arms Raptor Charging Handle projects horizontally to allow a more natural, ergonomic grip, and is sized for two fingers or gloved hands to grip the handle comfortably. Made in the USA of fiber reinforced polymer and weighing less than two ounces, the Raptor Charging Handle has no sharp edges to cut or tear, and is lightly textured. Best of all, just like the conventional handle, the Raptor Charging Handle retains the ability to fold safely out of the way when pressed against the body or any other object.

Also new from Manticore is their Brass Buster brass deflector. When shooting a Steyr AUG or MSAR rifle off your weak shoulder there is a very real risk of injury from ejecting brass striking you in the face or eyes. As a solution to this problem, the Brass Buster as an ambidextrous/reversible brass deflector designed to facilitate weak side shooting for all Steyr AUG and AUG clone rifles. It also facilitates safe shooting for those using a rifle not ejecting the proper direction for their dominant hand or eye, such as a left handed shooter using a rifle with a right side ejecting bolt. It can be installed or removed in seconds without any need for tools, adhesives, or Velcro. The Brass Buster is reversible and works whether your rifle is set up for right or left side ejection. Simply install the deflector “T” shield on the ejection port side of the gun. Both new products are compatible with all Steyr AUG rifles and clones including the, MSAR STG-556 (all generations) and E4. For more information you can contact them at Manticore Arms, Inc., Dept. SAR, 902 South Randall Road, Suite C #318, St. Charles, IL 60174. Phone: (603) 715-0334.
Rock River Arms Announces PDS Pistol

The Rock River Arms PDS Pistol is the first of a new generation of firearms employing Rock River Arms’ patent-pending Piston Driven System (PDS). Utilizing a purpose-designed bolt carrier, an adjustable gas piston and an over-the-barrel spring and guide rod arrangement, the Rock River Arms PDS is able to completely eliminate the traditional recoil system associated with AR-style firearms, making for an extremely versatile weapon platform. The design of the upper receiver and guide rod base prevents gas blow-by to the back of the receiver. The two position adjustable regulator is conveniently positioned on the right side of the regulator housing.

The New PDS Pistol has a full length top mounting rail from the rear of the receiver to the regulator housing, allowing flexible placement of numerous optics, lights, lasers and other accessories. The folding ambidextrous, non-reciprocating charging handles may be used independently or in unison to charge the RRA PDS Pistol. The RRA PDS Pistol features a Mil-Std 1913 rail on the rear receiver adaptor as well as a Mil-Std 1913 rail on the regulator housing that allows sling or weapons mounting capabilities. The handguard features an integral Operator Safety Flange to help prevent support-hand movement/slippage towards the muzzle. For more information please contact Rock River Arms, Inc., Dept.
Ruger Introduces SR-556 Piston Driven Rifle in 6.8 SPC

Sturm, Ruger & Co., Inc. is pleased to announce the new Ruger SR-556/6.8, a new chambering in the popular SR-556 two-stage, piston-driven, AR-style rifle. The new SR-556/6.8 brings the power and downrange authority of the 6.8 SPC cartridge in a two-stage piston rifle that runs cooler and cleaner than traditional gas-driven, AR-style rifles. Packaged with one five-round magazine and two twenty-five round magazines, the SR-556/6.8 is an ideal hunting rifle for those who appreciate the versatility of the customizable and ergonomic AR-style platform. The 6.8 SPC has ample power for hunting medium-sized game, and the greater muzzle and downrange energy enhances the capability of the SR-556 in defensive or tactical roles as well. The SR-556/6.8 retains all the features of the original SR-556 that make it an outstanding value in the AR-style rifles. The patent-pending, two-stage piston delivers a smooth power stroke to the one-piece bolt carrier, which softens recoil, aiding both shooter comfort and durability of the rifle. The four-position gas regulator allows the shooter to tune the rifle to the ammunition being fired and environmental conditions present. A chrome-lined, cold hammer forged barrel provides accuracy and longevity, Troy Industries folding battle sights, quad rail and rail covers add considerable value to the package, as does the Hogue Monogrip, six-position stock, sight adjustment tool, and the padded carry case, all included with the SR-556/6.8. The SR-556/6.8 maintains the mid-length gas system and the heavy (.850″) barrel contour under the handguard of the original SR-556. The 1:10 twist barrel has a standard SAAMI 6.8 SPC chambering, is 16.12 inches long, is threaded 5/8-24, and is capped with the effective and distinctive Mini-14/SR-556 flash suppressor. The SR-556/6.8 weights 7.75 pounds without a magazine. For more information you can contact Sturm, Ruger & Co., Inc., Dept. SAR, 200 Ruger Road, Prescott, AZ 86301. Phone: (928) 541-8893.
New Black Gun Shooting Rest from Hyskore

Hyskore has just introduced their new Black Rifle Shooting Rest. This shooting rest was designed specially for black rifles with pistol grips and extended magazines in mind. It is constructed with two parallel rails that leave a gap in the center so that long magazines and pistol grips fit into the rest. This allows the gun so set lower in the rest so it can be shouldered easily. The solid, lightweight rest disassembles with a convenient self-storage feature. By undoing only 2 hand-knobs, the front leg brace can be moved to the top side of the rest where it can be reattached for transit and storage. This reduces the foot print of the rest by 60%. It also features 3-point leveling, a magnetic spirit level, front leather rest bag, rear rest platform and auxiliary buttstock strap. Many shooters like to use a rabbit ear rest bag to support the rear of the gun. With that in mind, the Black Gun Shooting Rest has a 4 inch by 5 inch ear platform beneath the removable padded yoke. This gives the shooter a wide range of options for supporting the gun. The rear elevation adjustment knob can be placed on either the left or right hand side of the rifle. The rest will accept guns with magazines up to 40-round capacity. For more information on this or any of their fine line of rifle rests please contact Hyskore, Dept. SAR, 193 West Hills Road, Huntington Station, NY 11746. Phone: (631) 673-5975. Fax: (631) 673-5976. Website: www.hyskore.com.
