Nowadays, what comes to mind when “bolt-action rifle” is mentioned? I’d venture to say an image of a 26-inch heavy-profile barreled-action mated to a stout stock appears in your thoughts—à la tactical sniper rifle. Or how about an even longer barrel inside a stock, perfect for attaching a bipod or laying on bags to adapt to barriers, along with an optic that looks like a converted spotting scope? Where are we going with this?

With “black rifles” dominating the gun media, it’s easy to forget that other types of rifles exist. It’s nice to have the opportunity to remind you that there are rifles that offer real world usefulness beyond the AR. My own initial interest in firearms began with bolt-action hunting rifles.

Ruger American Ranch

This article is inspired by the rifles carried by the guides and cowboys I spent time with out in Wyoming or down in Texas for multiple hunts over the years. I was fortunate to have been part of a select group to first hunt with the Ruger American Generation II (RA Gen2) Standard back in October 2023. We used the bolt action American Standard Gen2 chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor chasing after scimitar oryx down in Texas. The outfitter and guides all were excited when they were briefed at the time on the upcoming release of the shorter-barreled “Ranch” model. This experience left no doubt about wanting to try the compact Ruger American Generation II (RA Gen2) Ranch as soon as it became available. An American Gen2 Ranch chambered in 300 AAC Blackout (300 Blk) was used for this evaluation. Several other calibers are available.

The Ruger American Generation II is unrecognizable from its Gen I predecessor. (Ruger)

The Ruger American Gen2 is unrecognizable from its Gen1 predecessor. A new stock features a Monte Carlo-esq contoured, raised cheekpiece. Length-of-pull and comb height is adjustable. The ergonomics of the stock allow for a comfortable, repeatable cheek weld combined with hand and finger placement conducive to pulling the 3- to 4-pound Ruger Marksman adjustable trigger. Ruger designed the Gen2 stock so a section can be removed, and the length-of-pull reduced to 12 inches. This is ideal for smaller statured hunters.

As detailed in a previous article in SAR covering the American Standard Gen2, the American Gen2 Ranch also uses Ruger’s patented “Power Bedding” integral bedding block system. It secures the receiver and free-floats the cold-hammer-forged barrel for improved accuracy. The 16-inch spiral-fluted cold-hammer-forged barrel will raise eyebrows with its aesthetics. The well done Cerakote finish is easy on the eyes and provides superior, easy to maintain finish. Suppressors and muzzle brakes are gaining popularity. The barrel is threaded and arrives wearing a radial muzzle brake.

The Ruger Marksman trigger features a distinctive release lever on the trigger shoe. This is the secret to maintaining minimal, creep-free trigger weight while keeping the system safe. The release lever must be activated (by pulling the trigger) before the sear will move and fire the cartridge.

The RA Gen2’s steel receiver is topped with a factory-installed optics rail compatible with Picatinny-type scope mounting systems. This simplifies optic mounting. The single-piece, three-lug bolt cycles smoothly and features a full diameter bolt body, dual cocking cams and an oversized bolt knob that can be unscrewed and replaced by the end user. The bolt’s 70-degree throw keeps it clear of a mounted optic. Ruger has improved the finish on the bolt action for a smoother feel during manipulation. Tighter overall tolerances (including chamber) boosts accuracy potential. A 10-round, detachable Magpul P-MAG magazine feeds rounds into the chamber.

The Ruger American Generation II Ranch uses a single-piece, three-lug bolt. Ruger has improved finish on the bolt action for smoother manipulation. (Todd Burgreen)

A tang-mounted safety completes the action. The RA Gen2’s safety has three positions—forward (for fire), middle (where the bolt can still move), and rear (locks the bolt down). This is an important detail that Ruger listened to their customer base about and changed from the Ruger American Standard Gen1. If you have ever been afield in thick terrain or jostled around on an ATV, you know a bolt can be inadvertently opened, dropping round out and/or collecting debris in the action. This can pose a problem when the rifle needs to be deployed in quickly.

MISSION DRIVES THE GEAR

This is where 300 Blk comes into the story. The decision to go with a RA Gen2 Ranch chambered in 300 Blk may surprise some. 300 Blk is more associated with AR platforms. However, a better mixture of classic bolt with utilitarian cartridge would be hard to come by. 300 Blk was, essentially, a rebadging of J.D. Jones’ 300 Whisper cartridge that was introduced in a SAMMI-accepted package for use by U.S. Special Operation Command. Anecdotal information compares standard velocity 300 Blk 115- to 125-grain ammunition as exceeding the ballistic performance of the 7.62×39 mm and eclipses 5.56 NATO both in ballistic and terminal performance. At 300 yards, 300 Blk has approximately 17 percent more energy than 7.62×39 mm thanks to its higher ballistic coefficient (BC), more aerodynamically shaped bullets.

One interesting twist with the 300 Blk is the ability to choose factory loaded subsonic cartridges for optimal use with a sound suppressor. The ability to access a plethora of either supersonic or subsonic factory ammunition offers great flexibility to the 300 Blk user. A 300 Blk bolt action with a suppressor firing subsonic ammunition creates a combination capable of “Hollywood quiet” performance.

Mounting a suppressor for everyday use is growing more popular. I’m pleasantly surprised by the number of suppressors witnessed when I’m out hunting now. An Aero Precision Lahar-30 suppressor was chosen for use with the RA Gen2 Ranch. The Lahar-30 features a laser welded combination of 17-4 stainless steel blast chamber and secondary baffles with an Inconel blast baffle to provide increased performance under hard use. The Lahar-30 has no minimum barrel length restrictions and is full-auto rated. It is rated for calibers up to 300 Win Mag and weighs 15.4 ounces.

The compact RA Gen2 Ranch wearing an Aero Precision Lahar-30 suppressor is a true utility rifle riding horseback in a scabbard, secured to an ATV gunrack, or resting on a truck seat. Having a separate magazine with subsonic rounds is a good option to have. A close range shot of 50 yards and in can be taken without disturbing domesticated animals or alerting the animal being targeted, which is especially beneficial if more than one target is present.

SCOPING UP

I decided to use an optic basic with the RA Gen2 Ranch. I mounted a Leupold VX-Freedom 3-9x. My plan for the rifle was two-fold. First, was to use it according to its “Ranch” moniker at a piece of property in West Virginia. When on a 4-wheeler, ATV, and walk-about, it’s always nice to have a rifle brought along.

Ruger has equipped the Ruger American Generation II Ranch with a removable section of buttstocvk to length of pull can be reduced to 12-inches for shooters of smaller stature. (Todd Burgreen)

Second, was to turn the RA Gen2 Ranch into a better fitting hunting rifle for one of my daughters-in-law. Ruger has equipped the RA Gen2 Ranch with a removable section of buttstock. I took advantage of it to better fit her smaller stature. By reducing the length-of-pull to around 12-inches, she can manage the rifle much better, including finding quarry in the Leupold scope more easily by not have to crane her neck awkwardly.

AMMUNITION VARIETY

The Ruger American Generation II Ranch was tested from the bench for accuracy and around barricades and other obstacles to get a better appreciation of its handling and performance. The Aero Precision Lahar-30 suppressor was mounted for most of the testing. (Todd Burgreen)

Various ammunition was tested with the RA Gen2 Ranch including Hornady supersonic 125-grain HP and 110-grain GMX, subsonic 208-grain AMAX and 190-grain Sub-X, SIG SAUER Elite 120-grain HT, Black Hills Ammunition 110-grain TTSX and 220-grain OTM, and Federal Fusion 150-grain SP to name a few. Most of the range time, albeit bench or more dynamic use, included use with the Aero Precision Lahar suppressor.

I want to highlight Hornady’s Sub-X 300 Blk load. The unique load consists of a 190-grain bullet designed specifically to perform at subsonic velocities. A cannelure groove is present for a positive case crimp. The Sub-X bullet combines a lead core surrounded by a grooved metal jacket and tipped with the company’s patented “Flex Tip” insert. Long grooves scored into the Sub-X metal jacket combined with a flat base create conditions for reliable expansion. The Flex Tip insert placed in front of hollow point cavity kicks expansion off when striking a target. The Flex Tip also prevents material from clogging a hollow point, which sometimes prevents expansion. Hornady made sure the performance of the new load meets or exceeds the FBI requirements for terminal ballistic performance. Additionally, a low flash signature makes the ammo ideal for both suppressed and unsuppressed firearms when used in low-light environments.

Here’s a new Hornady Sub-X 300 Blk 190-grain cartridge alongside a recovered bullet showing its terminal performance. (Todd Burgreen)

Let’s point out the ballistic performance of subsonic 300 Blk loads resembles that of a pistol round. For comparison’s sake, a 230-grain 45 ACP generates 461 ft/lbs. of energy. The Hornady 190-grain Sub-X, 465 ft/lbs. All things being equal, a high sectional density (SD) bullet penetrates better than a low SD. BC is a measurement of how efficiently a bullet moves thru the air. Superior ballistic coefficients (.437 190-grain (300 Blk) bullet versus a .188 (45 ACP) bullet) and sectional densities (SD .286 versus .162) help the Hornady 190-grain Sub-X maintain energy and penetration characteristics further downrange than a typical pistol bullet. However, the use case for subsonic 300 Blk loads should be carefully considered since the round’s terminal effect isn’t as great as that of a typical supersonic rifle round.

BOOM TIME, QUIETLY

The RA Gen2 Ranch was tested from the bench for accuracy and around barricades and other obstacles to get a better appreciation of its handling and performance. The Lahar-30 suppressor was mounted for most of the testing. Steel targets were smacked with ease out to 150 yards using field expedient rests. While by no means rivaling a semi-automatic for fire power, the detachable ten-round magazines were handy to recharge the rifle after the last round. As expected from a bolt-action, no malfunctions were experienced. One note here is that when the last round was ejected, the bolt will not close on the empty magazine. The safety made no audible noise during manipulation, an important consideration for hunting or defensive use.

An Aero Precision Lahar-30 suppressor direct threaded on the Ruger American Generation II Ranch’s muzzle. (Todd Burgreen)

The Aero Precision Lahar suppressor was directly threaded to the Ruger barrel and weighs 15.4 ounces. This translates into minimal interference with the rifle’s handling characteristics while still offering a six-baffle design that drops the decibel level down to approximately 135dB. Recoil was not a factor, especially with the suppressor mounted, which was especially appreciated when set up for use by one of my daughters-in-law.

PERFORMANCE

Avg. (Todd Burgreen)

I chose a 150-yard zero after considering the caliber and the rifle’s role. Roughly speaking, a 150-yard zero with 110- to 125-grain 300 Blk loads shoot pretty flat out to 200 yards, dropping only 4.5 inches. Three-round groups at 100 yards were in the 1.25- to 1.5-inch range. Group size remained consistent with or without the Aero Precision suppressor. Shifts in point of impact were minimal, as well, which adds to the convenience of running the rifle with and without the suppressor.

Field testing consisted of Echo Valley Training Center’s Jungle Walk range. The ability to move through its varied terrain and engage randomly placed deer, coyote, and raccoon targets hidden within cover suited my RA Gen2 Ranch 300 Blk evaluation perfectly. Ranges involved were 35 to 150 yards with multiple shots fired at most of the targets. The emphasis was on working the Ruger American’s bolt without removing the rifle from my shoulder.

It’s hard to believe that a anyone using the Ruger American Generation II Ranch in 300 AAC Blackout is ever under-gunned when hunting deer size game or pressed into other duties. (Todd Burgreen)

I also loaded magazines with Hornady 190-grain Sub-X. The focus was making sure reliability was maintained and how far I could push the velocity-challenged subsonic rounds. Engagement distances were kept 100 yard and in, mostly with targets placed between 25 and 75 yards. The round’s trajectory was surprisingly flat out to 50 yards. 100-yard bullet strikes were approximately 7-inches low with the 50-yard, subsonic zero.

THE WALKBACK

The 300 Blk in the bolt action Ruger American Generation II Ranch offers .30 caliber performance in a compact, 6-pound rifle. The RA Gen2 Ranch is a solid working companion worthy of its “Ranch” designation. No need for a super-magnum rifle with a mega-zoom scope and hyper-complicated reticle. I find it hard to believe that anyone using the RA Gen2 Ranch 300 Blk is ever under-gunned when hunting deer-size game or pressed into other duties. I believe the Ruger American Generation II Ranch will find a niche among ranchers and outdoorsmen that will appreciate the rifle for its efficiency.

By Todd Burgreen

We all perk up when we hear something new is being introduced in the firearm world. However, how often are we disappointed when “new” turns out to be nothing more than a different color or some small added tweak. This is not the case with the Ruger American Generation II rifle. The Generation II is much more than a souped version of the original Ruger American bolt action rifle. So many enhancements have been made to the platform that the American Rifle Generation II stands as further proof of Ruger’s commitment and responsiveness to its customers, whether by consistently providing new products or by continually improving those already in its catalog.

In fact, Ruger could have chosen to go with an entirely different model nomenclature with the American Generation II, such is the departure between Generation I and Generation II models. The American Rifle Generation II is quite a leap forward. It is unrecognizable from its predecessor. The new stock features a Monte Carlo-esque contoured and raised cheekpiece. Length-of-pull and comb height is adjustable, as well. Length-of-pull can be reduced to 12 inches for smaller statured hunters. And likewise, the Generation II’s light weight (6.5 pounds) will appeal to smaller customers, it’s also sure to be appreciated by all shooters looking to lighten their load in the field.

The Ruger American Rifle’s re-birth in the form of the Generation II.(Todd Burgreen)

SUM OF ITS PARTS

Ruger’s patented Power Bedding integral bedding block system secures the receiver and free-floats the cold hammer-forged barrel for improved accuracy. The 20-inch spiral fluted, cold hammer-forged barrel will raise eyebrows with its aesthetics and put user on notice something new is at hand with this Ruger rifle. The well applied Cerakote finish is easy on the eyes and provides an easy-to-maintain finish. Suppressors and muzzle brakes are gaining popularity in the bolt-action world. The barrel is threaded and arrives wearing an effective radial muzzle brake. The ergonomics of the stock allow for a comfortable, repeatable cheek weld combined with hand and finger placement conducive to pulling the 3- to 4-pound Ruger Marksman adjustable trigger.

Without going into minutia, the Ruger Marksman trigger features a distinctive release lever in front of the trigger shoe proper. This is the secret to maintaining minimal trigger weight, without creep, while keeping the system safe. The release lever must be activated (i.e. pulling the trigger) before the sear will move and fire the cartridge.

The Ruger American Rifle Generation II is quite a leap forward. It is unrecognizable from its predecessor. The new stock features a Monte Carlo-esque, contoured, and raised cheekpiece. Length-of-pull and comb height are adjustable, as well. (Ruger)

The Generation II’s steel receiver is topped with a factory installed optics rail compatible with Picatinny-type scope mounts. This simplifies optic mounting. The single-piece, three-lug bolt cycles smoothly and features a full diameter bolt body, dual cocking cams, and an oversized bolt knob that can be unscrewed and replaced by end user. The bolt’s 70-degree throw keeps it clear of any mounted optic. Ruger has improved the finish on the bolt action for slicker manipulation. Tighter overall tolerances, including those found in the chamber, boost accuracy potential. A three-round, detachable, AI-style box magazine feeds rounds into the chamber. Optional 5- or 10-round AI-style magazines are available.

A tang-mounted safety completes the action. The Generation II’s safety has three positions—forward for fire, middle safe (where bolt can still move), and rear safe (where the bolt is locked down.) If you’ve ever been afield in thick vegetation, you know that a bolt can be inadvertently opened, dropping a round out of the action, when pushing through brush. This can pose a problem when finally encountering your prey. This is an important detail, and one that Ruger understood and accounted for after listening to its customers.

HANDS ON

I had the opportunity to handle the Ruger American Rifle Generation II chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor extensively in the field and at my home range. Ruger currently lists the rifle in other calibers with more on the way. Interestingly, 7mm-08, 450 Bushmaster, and 204 Ruger are some of the initial offerings. A Leupold VX-5HD 3-15×44 optic was mounted to the Ruger’s receiver. Hornady’s 143-grain ELD-X Precision Hunter loads proved a favorite in the rifle for its combination of accuracy and terminal performance.

The typical herd size of scimitar oryx encountered in West Texas. (Todd Burgreen)

My Ruger American Rifle Generation II experience stretched most of the fall starting with a West Texas hunt for scimitar oryx. A zero-confirming session upon arrival in the Backcountry Hunts Texas camp produced 1.5-inch three-round groups with the Hornady 143-grain ELD-X load and the Leupold VX-5HD optic. That’s certainly acceptable from the bench and for the first time firing the rifle. More formal range time showed the Hornady 143-grain ELD-X performing near 1-MOA accuracy levels. The Leupold optic and Hornady load stayed constant for the rest of the fall with the Ruger American Rifle Generation II when geography turned to the Mid-Atlantic and the quarry turned to deer.

PERFORMANCE

Avg. FPS

Avg. 3-Shot Group @100 yards (in.)

Best 3-Shot Group @100 yards (in.)

Hornady 129-gr SST

2767

1.66

1.33

Hornady 143-gr ELD-X

2643

1.33

1.25

Federal 140-gr Accubond

2686

1.5

1.33

There’s no better field test for a hunting rifle than pursuing a herd animal like the scimitar oryx. The males weigh 310 to 460 pounds and the females 200 to 300 pounds. Typical of African animals, the hide is surprisingly thick. This is important to know when selecting a rifle and bullet combo. With multiple pairs of eyes on you, stalks are challenging and generally long affairs involving lots of walking, even crawling, to shrink every yard of distance before taking your shot. Typical engagement range is 200 to 300 yards. A rifle needs to be well balanced, portable, hardy, and accurate to excel in this type of hunting.

Hornady 6.5 Creedmoor 143-grain ELD-X Precision Hunter loads proved up to the task with the Texas scimitar as shown from the three recovered bullets nestled into opposite side hide. (Todd Burgreen)

With the West Texas camp at an elevation of 5035 feet, the Ruger American Rifle Generation II proved ideal with its well-balanced sub-7-pound weight, especially considering the ever-changing terrain of plateaus, canyons, ridges, and rocky outcrops. The new splatter patterned stock provides excellent grip for miles of carry along with outstanding ergonomics when shouldering. The American Generation II’s forend is contoured in a way that guides your offhand fingers into subtle grooves on each side for a positive grip. The Leupold VX-5HD reticle was “there” and ready to go when shouldered, no matter how out of breath I might have been.

Based on previous experience in Texas, I came well-equipped in the glass department.
MOUNTAIN MOMMA

The rugged and steep terrain of northeastern West Virginia was another challenging setting for the Generation II. Here, a rifle is needed that features accuracy from tree stands or ground blinds, yet also provides the handling characteristics that enable still hunting techniques. This puts the onus on scouting and choosing the best ambush position. Most people don’t realize that, even with the relatively short ranges involved in thick timber hunting, pinpoint accuracy is crucial when working in a three-dimensional, vegetation-constrained shooting lane. Of course, if a 300-yard shot presents itself as the only option, having the ability to successfully place the round where needed is an asset.

Still hunting is where the Generation II comes into its own. As the name implies, still hunting is walking stealthily through an animal’s habitat, stopping frequently, sometimes for long periods, to look and listen for game. As a rule, its common to spend at least ten times longer being still than walking. Still hunting is stalking your prey on its own terms. The Generation II’s superior handling and natural shouldering attributes make quick, well-placed shots possible when an animal presents itself.

The Generation II was an asset in Texas where a large scimitar oryx bull was taken after a long stalk. Multiple rapid shots cemented my respect for the Ruger American Rifle Generation II. Similar successes followed in West Virginia and Virginia for whitetail. My son and I both took deer with it. He nabbed a fine nine-point mountain buck that was a close-range affair. The buck exploded from cover in pursuit of a doe, allowing my son only a few seconds of decision making and engagement time. My harvest was a more typical scenario of sniping a doe from a trail 100-or-so yards away. She was not aware of my presence while I was standing a behind a tree monitoring the crossing.

RECAP

Scimitar oryx taken with the Ruger American Rifle Generation II in West Texas. (Todd Burgreen)

Any hunter should consider the Ruger American Generation II for their needs. The specific role to be filled is up to the end user. The American Rifle Generation II excelled in the West Texas expanse, as well as the steep woodlands of the inland Mid-Atlantic. The Ruger American Rifle Generation II bolt-action rifle, equipped with Leupold’s VX-5HD optic and Hornady’s 143-grain ELD-X Precision Hunter load, proves you don’t need a multi-thousand-dollar rifle to have an accurate and potent hunting rig. Ruger incorporated as many features as possible in the American Rifle Generation II while maintaining affordability. The moderate price of the American Rifle Generation II is only a sweetener considering we found Ruger made no cost-cutting compromises that could affect the rifle’s performance. I expect hunters to reward Ruger with their patronage based on my experience with the American Rifle Generation II.

Sturm, Ruger & Company, Inc. is pleased to announce the latest addition to its modern sporting rifle lineup, the Small-Frame Autoloading Rifle, or SFAR. Chambered in 7.62 NATO / .308 Win., the SFAR combines the ballistic advantages of .308 Winchester with the size of a traditional MSR. The smaller of the two initial configurations of this rifle features a 16-inch barrel and weighs in at just 6.8 pounds unloaded. By using superior materials and engineering, the SFAR is bigger and stronger where it needs to be and remains smaller and lighter than comparable .308-sized rifles.

Ruger SFAR Model 5610

Using many mil-spec-compatible components and fitted with the Ruger Elite 452 trigger, the construction and operation of the Ruger SFAR will be familiar to the millions of Americans who have already adopted traditional modern sporting rifles. The upper and lower receivers are both CNC-machined from 7075-T6 forgings and feature an oversized magazine well, forward assist, dust cover and brass deflector. Barrels are cold hammer-forged with 5R rifling, a 5/8″-24 muzzle thread, and finished with black nitride for accuracy, longevity and easy cleaning. CNC-machined from high-strength super alloy steel, the bolt and barrel extension feature tapered lugs that strengthen the breech by adding material in key areas.

“Over the course of this rifle’s development, we fired hundreds of thousands of rounds to assess and enhance real-world performance and wear,” noted Ben Parker, the lead design engineer for SFAR. “The proprietary design and material selection of the bolt and barrel extension help deliver a rugged, reliable, and safe rifle that we are proud to call a Ruger.”

Ruger SFAR Model 5611

SFAR rifles are fitted with a 4-position regulated gas block to achieve ideal function across the wide range of ammunition available in the marketplace today, whether running the rifle dirty or clean, suppressed or unsuppressed. The included, on-board 3/16-inch ball-end wrench makes for easy regulator adjustment, while the 2-port Boomer muzzle brake makes the SFAR exceptionally soft shooting.

The handguard features Magpul M-LOK accessory attachment slots at the 3:00, 6:00, and 9:00 positions and sockets for QD sling swivels on both sides. Model 5610 features a 16-inch barrel, a mid-length gas system and a 15-inch Lite free-float handguard whose top rail has been docked in the middle for improved grip access and lighter weight. Model 5611 has a 20-inch barrel, a rifle-length gas system and a 15-inch handguard with a full Picatinny top rail. Both models feature Magpul MOE SL stock, MOE grip and ship with one, 20-round Magpul PMAG magazine.

CDNN Investments is like kryptonite for gun geeks. I was busy at work and glanced at my daily email blast from CDNN between medical tragedies. Amidst the sundry gun parts, rifle specials, trinkets, widgets and sundry ballistic baubles was an adorable Ruger Wrangler .22 pistol. I had been pondering one for a while. This copy was on sale NIB for $169.

Wow. $169 is really a pretty awesome deal for a brand new quality factory firearm. Ruger is a trusted brand, and the Wrangler is the spitting image of Colonel Sam Colt’s remarkably timeless Roscoe. I figured I couldn’t go wrong. I linked the order to my favorite local FFL and put it on the plastic. When the gun arrived it was like pouring kerosene onto a campfire.

Life Imitates Art

The man’s face was weathered and deeply lined from a lifetime spent exposed to the elements. He had been in town less than a day after punching a herd up from the border. Now he stood in a muddy street facing a professional gambler, his right hand twitching above the graceful curved butt of his powerful Peacemaker revolver.

The gambler had taken him for an easy mark, a trail-beaten simpleton with whiskey in his gut and cash in his pocket. However, it turned out that punching cows was not the limit of the hard man’s skills. When the game had not gone to the gambler’s liking words were exchanged and accusations unlimbered. Now the two men stood still as statues and comparably silent. The sundry townsfolk cleared the street in moments. They had a lot of experience with such as this.

The man had previously been buzzed on cheap whiskey and cheaper perfume from the fair tarts who plied their trade in the establishment he had just departed. However, the intensity of the moment cleared his head like a dip into a frigid feeding trough. The man was one with the moment and one with his gun.

The gambler made for his hogleg, or tried to scratch an itch or had a nervous twitch or was about to sneeze. In the end the details didn’t matter. The hard man’s gun jumped from its holster like a live jackrabbit from a stewpot. At a range of 15 yards his first round hit center of mass. The next three were a blur. Time stood still for a pregnant moment. The gambler moved not a whisker.

Let’s pause for a moment. Reality was seldom if ever like that. Wild Bill Hickock nailed Davis Tutt in Springfield, Missouri, back in the summer of 1865 with a single shot from his 1851 Colt Navy at 75 feet. When Luke Short killed Charlie Storms at contact range with his Colt Peacemaker in Tombstone, Arizona, in 1882 he actually set Storms’ coat ablaze. In 1881 in El Paso, Texas, Dallas Stoudenmire unlimbered his matching Smith & Wesson revolvers and shot his would-be assassin Bill Johnson eight times, blowing the unfortunate man’s testicles off in the process. Real life is seldom quite so tidy as the movies.

Regardless, in this particular case the gambler in question stood stock still because he wasn’t really a gambler at all. He was actually just the Big Rubber Man wearing a hat. The Big Rubber Man is what we call my realistic 3D target from Rubber Dummies. He’s made of recycled tires and shrugs off bullets better than Arnold Schwarzenegger in a cheesy 1980s action film. My wife stumbled into him in the dark in the house one time and scared herself to death, so now he lives on the back porch.

No matter, turns out I’m not a cool chiseled gunfighter, either. I’m just a middle-aged gunwriter with diagnosable maturity issues. However, pick a nice day when it’s not too hot, drop a .22-caliber Ruger Wrangler into my gunleather and give me plenty of inexpensive Winchester blasting bullets, and I could stay on the range till I starved. The Ruger Wrangler is the chemical formula for serious rimfire fun.

Origin Story

Oliver Winchester was an extroverted salesman without an excess of mechanical talent. Benjamin Tyler Henry was an introverted inventor and an easy mark for an opportunist tycoon like Oliver Winchester. By contrast, Samuel Colt was that rare combination of mechanical genius and master marketer. While Rollin White actually first contrived the bored-through cylinder on a revolver, it was Sam Colt who spread the wheelgun around the world.

Born in 1814, Sam’s first two ventures involved building firearms and underwater mines, both of which proved ultimately fruitless. However, beginning in 1847 his fortunes improved when the Texas Rangers ordered a cool 1,000 copies of his legendary handgun. By the time of his death in 1862 at the young age of 47 Sam Colt was one of the wealthiest men in America.

The .22-caliber Colt Frontier Scout on the right was designed as an inexpensive stand-in for the large-bore original.

A busy youngster, Sam went away to boarding school but was expelled when he set the place alight. Determined to help him channel his prodigious energies toward something productive Sam’s father signed him up as an apprentice seaman on the brig Corvo. While on a voyage out of Calcutta/Kolkata, young Sam was enthralled by the operation of the ship’s ratcheting capstan. By the time his vessel got back to North American young Master Colt had carved a model of his proposed revolving handgun out of wood.

Of all of his several offerings it was the 1873 Colt Single-Action Army that made the biggest splash. The world came to know the graceful curving weapon as the Peacemaker. I have no idea what kind of secret sauce Colonel Colt sprinkled over his 19th century contrivance, but it fits the human form in a way that borders upon unnatural. Something about that wonderful curved grip accommodates my mitts better than any Information Age plastic pistol.

Untold hundreds of thousands of the guns rolled off the lines from 1873 until the present. Colt still produces them sporadically today, though most of the commercial Peacemakers these days come from Italy. Cowboy Action Shooting provides an unquenchable thirst for these timeless old pistols.

The Plinking Version

Colt launched the .22-caliber Frontier Scout in 1956. Westerns dominated screens both large and small across our great republic, and Ruger’s .22-caliber Single-Six® had been a reliable seller since 1953. The Frontier Scout was a seven eighths-scale version of the larger Single-Action Army chambered for .22 rimfire. Out of the chute those first copies had an MSRP of $49.50. That’s about $480 today.

The Colt Frontier Scout .22LR revolver was designed to take advantage of America’s enthusiasm for Western movies back in the 1950s and 1960s.

The Frontier Scout went through a variety of frame materials, finishes and barrel lengths. Convertible versions with two cylinders for .22LR and .22 Win Mag debuted in 1964. The .22 Magnum barrels would stabilize .22LR bullets but not the other way around. At a glance you can tell the difference by looking at the crown. .22 Magnum barrels feature a recessed crown. .22LR tubes are cut flat.

The Scout uses a separate spring-loaded firing pin and black synthetic stocks came standard. Walnut grips were available as an upgrade. The standard removable retention pin for the cylinder pin on the larger SAA was now a simple screw on the Frontier Scout. The new guns included a screwdriver to assist in removal. A one-piece grip frame made the gun easier and cheaper to manufacture than the full-bore pistol.

Both the Ruger Wrangler (right) and the Colt Frontier Scout shoot plenty straight. These tiny groups were printed at 7m from a simple rest.

By 1986 the world was consumed by noisy hair bands and Star Wars Blasters, so the classic Western guns fizzled and died a natural death. A fun fact is that the barrels of Frontier Scouts were finished out on the same machinery that produced high-end Python tubes, so the quality was impeccable. Original Frontier Scout pistols remain popular today.

My Frontier Scout was made in 1968 and holds a special place in my heart. Back when my boys were young we always enjoyed hitting the regional gun show together when we had a little cash to burn. I was a medical student and broke as a skunk but had a few guns I could trade. My second son was maybe eight years old and had some cash saved up between Christmas and birthdays. We pooled our resources and traded my old Ruger Single-Six and a little of his cash for this well-preserved Frontier Scout. We have burned a zillion rounds through that little gun over the years together, and the fact that we own it jointly now makes the gun extra special.

The Modern Treatment

Introduced in April of 2019, the Ruger Wrangler taps into a particularly rich vein. The Wrangler perfectly captures the timeless spirit of the Colt Single-Action Army at a simply breathtaking price point. Designed from the outset to be reliable and robust yet inexpensive, the Wrangler is the cowboy Western pistol for the Common Man.

The frame of the Wrangler is formed from inexpensive aluminum and zinc castings. The cylinder is left unfluted for ease of manufacture, and many of the internal components are formed used metal injection molding techniques. The end product is finished in Cerakote, so there are several color options. The synergistic result is a gun that is plenty durable for its intended mission. The cost savings are passed on to the user.

The Wrangler weighs 30 ounces and is 10.25 inches long. The standard barrel is 4.62 inches long. The gun carries six rounds in its unfluted cylinder. The cylinder pin retention catch is spring-loaded like that of the original SAA, so disassembly is a snap without tools. The Wrangler uses a transfer bar ignition system for safety.

How Do They Compare?

The manual of arms is the same for both weapons. They both load via a pivoting loading gate on the right. The ejector rod rides underneath the barrel and is used to punch out empty cases. Placing the hammer of the Frontier Scout in the half cock position allows the cylinder to ratchet freely in a clockwise direction for loading and unloading. The Wrangler, by contrast, has no half cock position. However, opening the Wrangler’s loading gate releases the cylinder to spin freely in either direction. There is a scant step-off between the grips and the frame on both guns.

The Ruger Wrangler disassembles easily without tools.

My Frontier Scout has more than half a century on its trigger, so apples-to-apples comparisons are not really fair. The trigger and hammer on the Colt gun run like warm snot across glass. The deep blue finish is worn just enough to give the gun character.

My able opponent was actually just the Big Rubber Man, our long-suffering target from rubberdummies.com.

The action on the Wrangler feels just a tiny bit tight and gritty. Additionally, with the hammer cocked the transfer bar rattles audibly when you shake the gun. However, the action will undoubtedly loosen up over time, and I likely would not have even noticed it had I not been comparing the gun side-by-side to my nicely aged Frontier Scout. Lockup and mechanicals on the Wrangler are perfect. Like most superlative Ruger guns, just because it is inexpensive doesn’t mean it’s cheap.

Trigger Time

Both guns occupy the same general geometric footprint. As a result, they both ride comfortably in the same low-ride Western fast draw rig I use for my full bore SAA pistols. The shell loops are obviously worthless for packing rimfire rounds, but that’s kind of the reason God made pockets.

The barrel on the Scout is perhaps three eighths of an inch longer than that of the Wrangler, but the two guns handle exactly the same. If these were precision Olympic target pistols we could split hairs over accuracy, but they’re not precision Olympic target pistols. These are the guns that you tote for snakes or use to help keep the empty aluminum beverage can population in check.

Neither gun features sights that are adjustable in any way, but they both shot plenty straight and to point of aim without any ancillary molestation. Unlike their big-bore brethren, you can kill a couple hours behind either of these adorable little rimfire pistols without having to hock a kidney to cover the ammo. These two nifty little wheelguns are the perfect plinking pistols. Running them on an afternoon that’s not too hot and not too cold is pure recreational ballistic relaxation. Dual wielding them both at once will put hair on your chest no matter your gender.

Ruminations

Everybody needs one of these guns. Whether your proclivities sway toward long-range shooting, running a black rifle indoors as part of your day job, or IPSC pistolcraft, these beautiful little guns are pure unfiltered fun. They aren’t the first pistols you’ll grab when you hear glass breaking downstairs at two o’clock in the morning, but stocked with rat shot, they would certainly put paid to any venomous serpents with the poor grace to show up in your personal space unannounced.

Gunbroker.com lists vintage Frontier Scouts from $250 for a beater to $750 for a pristine example in the box. Special commemorative versions are more expensive. By contrast, as I mentioned earlier, my Wrangler set me back $169 on special to my dealer. At $169 I would feel comfortable storing the gun in the bottom my tackle box if need be.

The Korth NXR .44 Magnum on the left looks like something out of the movie “Blade Runner” and will set you back a cool $5,500. The Ruger Wrangler, by contrast, was $169 wholesale. You could buy 32 Wranglers for the price of a single Korth.

I’ve spent way more on much stupider things. Chances are you have as well. As I peruse my gun collection the Ruger Wrangler might just be the best value in the safe. Accurate, reliable, inexpensive and cool, my trusty Wrangler and a brick of cheap Winchester blasting bullets will kill an afternoon at the range just as well as it might drop a nearby tree rat or send a venomous serpent straight to snake heaven (not a real thing). With an MSRP of just $250 and street price that’s lower, it’s a fistful of fun.

Ruger Silent-SR Series Suppressors

Sturm, Ruger & Co., Inc. is the quintessential example of American capitalism at its best. The company was founded with a meager $50,000 investment by William B. Ruger and Alexander M. Sturm in a small, rented machine shop in Southport, Connecticut in 1949 for the purpose of manufacturing firearms. At that time, there were serious doubts within the industry with insider experts saying that “it can’t be done,” and that the entire industry was in decline. It was assumed that the large established name gun makers would continue to dominate the market.

What the industry didn’t count on was that this new company was guided by a number of innovative concepts, not the least of which was William B. Ruger’s desire to build each product “to a standard so that I would want one even if it was made by our competitors.” These basic principles of innovation, quality and value have earned the company the position of pre-eminence in the firearms industry over the past 68 years. Ruger, which is one of only two firearms manufacturers traded on the New York Stock Exchange, produces millions of firearms each year for hunting, target shooting, collecting, self-defense, law enforcement and government agencies.

Composite of 11 consecutive frames from high-speed video of firing a shot from a Ruger MK-II with the thread mounted Silent-SR suppressor. Frame rate was 5,000 frames/second, and these 11 frames cover the first 24 inches of bullet flight. The slight yaw after approximately 20 inches is normal (see text).

Ruger’s first product was the Ruger Standard pistol in .22LR. With some design innovations inspired by the Japanese Nambu and cosmetics/ergonomics of the German Luger, it became wildly popular—it was comfortable to hold and shoot. A retail price in the 1950s of $37.50 (representing fewer than 40 hours minimum wage effort), decent accuracy and good reliability were winning factors. Designed with manufacturing economy in the forefront, it had a 4.75-inch barrel and fixed sights. Many a bullseye match shooter had one in the bottom of his bag to permit finishing a match when his finely tuned target gun malfunctioned. It was also found tossed in the bottom of fishermen’s tackle boxes. Its popularity (and that of the 10 /22 rifle) started an ever growing industry of accessory makers.

Ruger is no stranger to the National Firearms Act weapons, having developed and built several machine guns. In the late 1980s Ruger purchased the rights to the UZI and what became the MP9 from Uziel Gal, its designer. In 1995, Ruger introduced its MP9 9mm submachine gun. Although recognized as an improved UZI, the weapon never became popular or even well known. Bill Ruger held the belief that civilians should not have access to machine guns and established the company policy that no Ruger machine guns would ever be sold to civilians, including Class 3 firearms dealers. The market was to be domestic law enforcement and international military. However, noted in the company’s law enforcement catalog, marketing to law enforcement requires personal demonstrations by local Class 3 firearm dealers. The MP9 was discontinued in 1996. Ruger’s other venture into the machine gun market was a variant of their 1973 Mini-14, the AC-556, which looked exactly like the Mini-14 but had a selector switch (semi, burst, full-auto) at the receiver right rear. The standard AC-556 was offered in both blued and stainless versions as well as a shorter weapon with a folding stock and 13-inch barrel (AC-556K or AC-556F) in blue or stainless. With marginal sales (although far better than the MP9), production was discontinued in 1999 and support terminated 10 years later. Until William B. Ruger’s death in 2002, no Ruger machine guns were sold to civilians. The civilian marketplace was through sale of police trade-ins.

Part of Ruger’s success has been through good market research, outstanding engineering and production of innovative products without significant bureaucratic impediments to slow down development. Part has been financing through reinvestment of profits rather than using traditional debt structure. And part has been by doing manufacturing in-house. Ruger’s Pinetree Casting (Nashua, NH) is one of the foremost investment casting facilities, and in addition to many Ruger weapon receivers, does casting for golf clubs. In 2014, the company purchased Megamet Solid Metals Inc., based in St. Louis, Missouri, to add metal injection molding (MIM) casting capability not only for increased production capacity, but to markedly reduce development time for new products. Unlike many of its competitors, Ruger has not acquired related companies, either competitors or accessory makers.

The use of silencers has become mainstream over the past 4 to 5 years, a fact not overlooked by Ruger. Although their 10 /22 rifles sold in the international market were routinely threaded 1 / 2-20 for European rimfire silencers, it wasn’t until several years ago that domestic Ruger .22 rifles and pistols came threaded 1 /2-28 for the US market. Ruger looked at possible acquisition of a silencer company but after due diligence decided to start building suppressors in-house at their New Hampshire facility.

Approximately a year ago, Ruger introduced two sound suppressors designed for rimfire cartridges: the “Silent-SR” thread mounting muzzle suppressor and the “Silent-SR ISB” integrally suppressed barrel for their take-down 10 /22 rifle.

Both suppressors are attractively packaged in boxes with a fitted foam insert. Any necessary tools are included: a cast composite spanner wrench for removing the endcaps of the Silent-SR and a hex wrench for disassembling the integral Silent-SR ISB. All suppressors are supplied with a 12-page, well written and profusely illustrated manual that covers legal and safety aspects, specifications, attachment to the host weapon, use, disassembly and cleaning instructions. Disassembly for cleaning is simple, and it is virtually impossible to reassemble incorrectly. Both are finished in black Cerakote.

Testing Protocols

The first question posed by most users relates to sound performance since that is the stated goal of a sound suppressor. There are a number of ways to evaluate sound levels, starting perhaps with Mitch WerBell of Sionics fame in the 1970s where he lined up the office staff and shot two different suppressors behind their backs asking which was quieter. While this has merit in distinguishing suppressed from non-suppressed weapons, subtle differences are distorted by the individual hearing damage of different observers.

A more objective method is to use sound measuring equipment that meets the requirements of MIL-STD-1474D. Not all sound meters are capable of accurately measuring the short peaks of firearm sounds, and even some industrial precision meters do not have the necessary peak detector. There are two classic field portable sound meters that meet all the requirements of MIL-STD-1474D: the B&K 2209 and the Larson-Davis 800B with their appropriate ¼-inch pressure microphones. Originally costing in the $5,000 range, both are currently out of production but are frequently available at reasonable cost. Factory service and recertification services are still available. For testing both Ruger suppressors, two of the L-D 800B meters were used, both of which were recertified by Larson-Davis 4 months prior to this test.

Silent-SR on bolt action rifle in Lead Sled for accuracy testing.

MIL-STD calls for a number of measurement locations. For the purposes of the most meaningful and familiar results, sound levels were measured simultaneously at the standard Reference Location (1.6 meters above grass, 1 meter left of the muzzle 90O to bore axis) and at a simulation of the shooter’s left ear (SLE). The Reference Location gives an indication of how the target or down range observer will perceive the gunshot, and the SLE will give one of the better indications as to potential hearing damage. While some advocate using the shooter’s right ear, close contact with a rifle stock confuses weapon action noise with muzzle blast reduction. The simulated SLE positioning of the microphone is 8 centimeters rearward of the back of the receiver (70 centimeters in the case of a handgun) and 18 centimeters left of the bore axis. By measuring both locations simultaneously for each shot, variations in individual rounds are minimized.

For each weapon-suppressor combination, three rounds were fired non-suppressed, and the results averaged. This was followed by a five-round string with the results averaged. It has been found that this number of rounds is statistically significant. For each location, the averages and reduction are noted. In addition, first round pop is calculated by subtracting the average of the last four rounds from the first round. First round pop is caused by a secondary detonation of partially burned powder particles encountering oxygen in the suppressor. MIL-STD permits the use of weighting scales. For a number of years dating back into the 1970s, A-weighting was used. In recent years, a number of manufacturers have changed to C-weighting, which is more accurate for the sound levels encountered with firearms.

Both OSHA and MIL-STD-1474D state that hearing protection is required for short duration peak sound levels greater than 140 dB at the shooter’s ear.

40-yard targets showing group size and point of impact changes of the 10 /22-TD with the standard factory barrel and the Silent-SR ISB suppressed barrel. See text for explanation of group sizes.

A second item of concern in evaluating a suppressor is whether there is any degradation in accuracy (group size) when the suppressor is mounted. There is often a shift in point of impact which can be corrected by sight adjustment. Rifles were used in a solid rest (Lead Sled) for group size measurements both with and without the suppressor at a range of 40 yards.

For handguns, high speed video was performed looking for excessive yaw or tumbling with the suppressor in place. Frame rate was 5,000 frames/second with a shutter speed of 30 microseconds to provide stop action of the bullet in flight during the first 2 feet of travel. The high-speed camera used was a monochrome Olympus iSpeed FS.

A third concern primarily of military importance is night-time recognition of the shooter’s location from flash or heat signature visualization. Because these suppressors are designed only for rimfire, flash signature was evaluated using high-speed video and only when mounted on the MK-II pistol (generally the worst case scenario).

With either suppressor, it is necessary to utilize standard velocity or subsonic .22LR ammunition to avoid the ballistic crack found with high-velocity ammunition. This crack has been measured with CCI Mini-Mag ammunition at 142 dB 1 meter to the side of the bullet flight path. In the case of .17HMR or .22 Magnum ammunition, the ballistic crack of the supersonic projectile is acceptable, and live targets are confused because the suppressor masks the origin of the shot.

Test Conditions

November 4, 2017, was a bright, sunny fall day in Boise, Idaho. The temperature was a chilly 50F with a relative humidity of 37% and a station pressure of 686 mmHg. Wind gusts were less than 3 miles per hour. The speed of sound calculated to 1,107 feet/second.

The ammunition chosen for testing was CCI Standard Velocity .22LR with the 40 grain bullet. This was chosen because it is commonly available, accurate and remains subsonic in almost any barrel length chambered for .22LR.

The Silent-SR thread-mounting suppressor was tested on two weapons. One was a Ruger MK-2 pistol with a bull barrel shortened to 4.5 inches and mounted in a Ransom Rest. The other was a Ruger 77 /22 with the barrel shortened to 16 inches. The Silent-SR ISB was tested on a Ruger 10 / 22-TD, its normal host weapon.

Silent-SR Thread-Mount Suppressor

The Silent-SR is packaged inside a black ballistic nylon pouch with a convenient belt loop. The suppressor length is 5.4 inches, outside diameter is 1.05 inches, and the weight is 6.4 ounces. It is rated for .22 Magnum and .17HMR in addition to fully automatic .22LR. The length of the threads in the mount is .43 inches, standard for the industry, with a .12-inch thread relief in the mount for safe use with barrels not having a thread relief. The threaded mount is a part of the entrance chamber. There are a total of six baffles (type 17-4 stainless steel), all having a bore aperture of .25 inch. The front end cap functions as a seventh baffle. The rear (blast) baffle is symmetric, and the remaining baffles have significant asymmetry. All baffles have a general conical shape with integral spaces. The tight bore aperture requires barrel threads with a true 90O shoulder for alignment.

Sound measurement levels were obtained on both a Ruger MK-II pistol (4.5-inch barrel) and a Ruger 77 /22?bolt action rifle (16-inch barrel). Both of these weapons are used routinely by the author for rimfire sound measurements. Sound performance was excellent as shown in Table 1 with the absolute sound level at the reference location of 120 dB on the MK-II and 116.7 dB on the 77 /22 rifle.

Disassembled Silent-SR ISB showing baffles, front end cap and the stacking screw. The far left baffle is symmetrical followed by six asymmetrical baffles and the front end cap.

It is important to remember that there will be day-to-day variations in the sound levels that appear to vary with location, humidity and ambient air temperature. Measurements made in a coastal location do not always correlate with those made in a high desert location such as Boise, Idaho. As a rule, five-round strings are statistically valid (standard deviation <1.5), which is why the tables include the standard deviation for the five suppressed measurements. The one exception was measurement at the reference location where the 8 dB first round pop increased the standard deviation. However, calculating excluding the first round resulted in an average of 118.4 dB and a standard deviation of 1.1, which is in line with all other measurements.

Although what is normally asked is the reduction, the more important measurement is the absolute sound level, both for far field and for hearing risk evaluation. First round pop can be eliminated with either an inert atmosphere (nitrogen, carbon dioxide, etc.) or a tiny amount of oil or grease in the entrance chamber. Absolute sound levels for the rifle are considerably lower than for the pistol, but the degree of reduction is significantly less. This is simply because the non-suppressed level on the rifle is significantly lower than on the pistol.

Accuracy and bullet stability were checked differently on the two weapons. With the Silent-SR mounted on the 77 / 22 bolt action rifle, a target was shot with and without the suppressor at a range of 40 yards. Adding the suppressor moved the point of impact down .176 inches (.421 MOA) but tightened the group from .795 inches (1.9 MOA) to .688 inches (1.64 MOA) with three shots touching. See Target 1.

A check of bullet stability on the MK-II pistol was considered difficult lacking optical sights. Instead, a high-speed video (5,000 frames/second) was performed. Lighting was difficult lacking bright sunlight, so two compromises were accepted: 1) a shutter speed of 30 microseconds (instead of the preferable 2 microseconds and 2) image enhancement (which decreased resolution). Eleven consecutive frames showed the bullet in the first 24 inches forward from the end of the suppressor. These 11 photos were superimposed to show the progress of the bullet traversing this distance as shown in the photo. Starting at the 20-inch region, there is slight yaw, which is normal as the bullet transitions from rotating about its physical center to rotating about its center of gravity. There was no visible flash detected.

The manufacturer’s suggested list price for the Ruger Silent-SR thread mounting suppressor (model 19000) is $449.

Silent-SR ISB for the Takedown 10/ 22-TD

The Silent-SR ISB is a complete replacement barrel with integral suppressor assembly for the Ruger 10 / 22-TD rifle. Unlike similar offerings, the Ruger suppressor includes all hardware and the forend composite handguard. The suppressed barrel is 16.12 inches long, making it .5 inch shorter than the standard barrel, and weighs 41.9 ounces as contrasted to the 30.7 ounces of the standard barrel. The suppressed barrel bears a resemblance to the over/under double-barreled shotgun with a width of .925 inches and height of 1.52 inches. The bore aperture throughout the baffle stack is .280 inch.

Silent-SR ISB integrally suppressed barrel mounted on Ruger 10 /22-TD. The stacking and retaining screw passes through the lower chambers and requires a simple 5 /32 hex wrench for disassembly/reassembly.

The suppressed barrel is alloy steel and 10.62 inches long. The aluminum suppressor outer housing has been permanently attached to this barrel to make the overall length in compliance with BATF regulations. The front end cap and baffle stack are easily removed by loosening the assembly bolt, a process well described in the manual. The blast baffle is symmetric, and the remaining six are significantly asymmetrical. All are type 17-4 stainless steel.

Sound measurements were made using the same host 10 / 22-TD receiver and comparing the original non-suppressed barrel with the Silent-SR ICP integrally suppressed barrel. The results are shown in Table 2. The suppressed barrel measured an impressive 114.7 dB at the reference location, which is only approximately 4 dB louder than the hammer falling on a spent cartridge case.

Accuracy testing was performed in the same manner as for the thread mounting suppressor on the rifle. The range was 40 yards, and the weapon was shot using the Lead Sled rest. A fixed 10x scope was attached to the Weaver base supplied with the rifle. Five shot groups were fired with both the standard and suppressed barrels. The target is shown in Target 2. The suppressed barrel tightened the group from 2.9 inches (6.92 MOA) to 2.05 inches (4.9 MOA) and dropped the group center by .77 inches (1.84 MOA).

The group sizes, both suppressed and non-suppressed, were considerably larger than with the thread-mounted suppressor on the 77 /22. There are several reasons for this, not the least of which is a re-worked 2.5-pound honed trigger on the 77 /22 with no over-travel as compared to a rough 6-pound trigger on the 10 /22-TD with significant over-travel.

The second issue is with barrel lockup on take-down weapons. The 10 / 22-TD tensioning ring has to be adjusted when one barrel is replaced with another. The tension at lockup is not totally consistent, and there is the potential for almost imperceptible flex at the barrel/receiver joint. Even simple removal and replacement of the same barrel can cause a minor point of impact shift. The most accurate way to mount an optic on a take-down rifle is to mount it on the barrel rather than the receiver. In contrast, the 77 /22 barrel is mounted in a far more rigid manner using a V-block and torqued mounting screws.

The manufacturer’s suggested list price for the Ruger 10 /22-TD Silent-SR integral suppressed barrel (model 19001) is $629.

Comments

Both suppressors have their strong points, including excellent sound performance, tightening of the shot groups and obvious quality. The Silent-SR ISB for the 10 /22 Takedown is definitely the more compact weapon due to the requirement for a 16-inch minimum barrel length. What would be a worthwhile improvement to the integral Silent-SR ISB would be to supply a rail contoured to the .920 diameter of the steel portion of the barrel for barrel mounting of an optical sight. The thread mounting Silent-SR has the advantage of a wide variety of weapon platforms and the strength to hold up to multiple rimfire cartridges. While both are outstanding, the author has a bias for thread mounting suppressors because of their versatility.

The stainless-steel-constructed RYDER 9-MP5 is a duty-use suppressor for the H&K MP5 sub-machine gun. The suppressor attaches to a standard three lug barrel via our patented Fast-Attach mechanism, similar to the way our best-in-class SOCOM Series suppressors attach. The suppressor is easily disassembled for cleaning, and the baffles are indexed and numbered for ease of reassembly. Designed for duty use, the RYDER 9-MP5 does not affect bullet performance or increase point of impact/point of aim as is the case with other sub-machine gun suppressors. When it comes to durability, performance, and ease of maintenance, the RYDER 9-MP5 is the clear choice for suppressing the MP5. www.surefire.com

The M.A.R.S. DM (directly mounted) is the lightest and shortest assault rifle suppressor B&T produces. It´s screwed directly on the muzzle. This lack of any mounting system allows it to be almost 300 grams lighter and 50mm shorter than other suppressors with a mounting system. Therefore the impact on the balance of the weapon and the extension of the gun is negligible and not perceptible in combat. Despite its small size the M.A.R.S. is a full gown up suppressors when it comes to muzzle flash and sound reduction. www.bt-ag.ch

Nosler Inc. announced the release of the 22 Nosler, a new cartridge designed to transform any standard AR-15 into the fastest, most powerful .22 caliber available for the platform, with the least amount of modification. The new addition to Nosler’s cartridge family delivers 30% more energy and is nearly 300 fps faster than a 223 Remington/ 5.56 NATO.

Born from the idea of creating the most powerful .22 caliber centerfire cartridge that would readily function in the AR platform, the 22 Nosler’s case design takes advantage of the AR-15’s unparalleled modularity, making the conversion from a standard 223 Remington/ 5.56 NATO to the 22 Nosler simple, requiring only a swap of the upper to the new chambering and switching out to a 6.8 Rem SPC magazine. This effortless two-step retrofit will allow shooters to experience the 22 Nosler’s lightning fast, hard-hitting performance, while still being able to use their existing 223 bolt carrier group.

Approaching 22-250 velocities in a significantly smaller package, the 22 Nosler yields nearly 25% more capacity than the 223 Rem/5.56 NATO making the round capable of pushing a 55gr. Nosler Ballistic Tip bullet at 3,350 fps out of an AR-15 fitted with an 18-inch barrel and a 77gr. Custom Competition bullet at 2,950 fps. Complete uppers and magazines for 22 Nosler conversions will be available at major sporting goods retailers nationwide. www.22Nosler.com

B.E. Meyers & Co., Inc., announced the release of a revolutionary new optics and accessory rail system called the BOARS-M2 (B.E. Meyers Optics & Accessories Rail System) for the M2, M2A1, M3 series .50 caliber heavy machine gun platforms. The BOARS-M2 mount is a low-profile mounting solution that offers a quick-disconnect with true return-to-zero reattach. The BOARS-M2 represents a solution to the shortcomings of current M2 platform heavy machine gun optics and accessories mounting systems.

Key features for the BOARS-M2 include: a quick detach optics/laser rail, snag free design, non-marring installation, low height-over-bore, and oversized pass through aperture for use with iron sights.

The BOARS-M2 is comprised of two parts: the lower base and a quick-detach optics/accessory rail. This allows for quick and effective changes between day and night optics without any loss of zero. In addition, cleaning and maintenance of the M2 Weapon platform with an optics mount is simplified with the BOARS-M2. Legacy systems require the complete removal of the optic and mount (resulting in a complete loss of zero), whereas the BOARS-M2 only requires the quick-detach optics/accessory rail to be removed, thus preserving optic zero once all components have been re-installed. www.bemeyers.com

The Hi-Point is ergonomically and tactically designed with useable top-side and forearm bottom Picatinny rails with more than enough space for various day and night options.

Chambered in 9mm Luger, .40 S&W, .45 ACP and a totally new 10mm carbine scheduled for January 2018. The longer than pistol length barrel will add 100-250 feet per second higher-velocity and more energy over like-chambered handguns—especially if using +P loads.
Compact, light, reliable, accurate and affordable, these robust carbines can sling lead with much more expensive patrol carbine counter-parts all day long.

A simple blow-back design reliably feeds ammunition from the single-stack, 10-round magazine—a new high-capacity magazine is available in 9mm. www.hi-pointfirearms.com

White River Knife & Tool GTI 4.5 tactical/utility knife is designed for LEO and combat use.

A primary feature of the GTI 4.5 is the high-traction, textured olive drab hefty 5-¼ inch long Micarta handle. The deeply textured handle design provides a no-slip grip, regardless of conditions or use of gloves.

Along with the no-slip, high-traction leverage Micarta handle it has a finger cutout forward of the guard for extra-heavy cutting chores. A wide lanyard loop will fit either cord or a strap (web gear), and the rear is notched for secure no-slip striking use if needed. The top of the handle is engineered for a better hand grip with a slight rise for the thumb.

The full tang 4.5-inch blade is a stout 3/16-inch-thick CPM S35VN steel at a 60 Rockwell C scale hardness. This knife has a fairly wide modified fighting blade design featuring a wider cutting surface leading up to the spine of the knife.

The black finish is Ionbond, a process which deposits incredibly robust diamond-like carbon through a molecular vapor deposited technique that will not peel, crack or chip and adds no thickness to the blade.

This unique knife includes a sheath made of a heavy leather with tough Tactical Tailor Mallice clips for attachment to Molle webbing, conventional pack webbing as well as a wide military belt loop for conventional waist wear. www.whiteriverknives.com

The suppressor was chosen because of its reliable functioning, ease of use and long service life.
FA Machine Works Minuteman TI and Grenadier suppressors have revolutionized modern suppressor design with Gas Indexing Technology (GIT), Patent No. US9,410,761 B2. GIT allows for the rotational orientation of baffles by the user so as to take advantage of the differences in pressures between handguns and rifles of the same caliber and thereby, providing optimum sound reduction for each. These lightweight, titanium suppressors also utilize Total Breakdown Technology (TBT) providing complete serviceability using common tools.

Equally at home on pistol hosts, or pistol-caliber carbines, the Poseidon is a must-have piece of kit for ultra-compact suppression.

Built completely in the U.S., the MOD*X Rifle is a lightweight, affordable bolt-action rifle featuring the Remington Model 700 SPS Tactical AAC-SD barreled action housed in the A*B Arms MOD*X GEN III Modular Rifle System.

The MOD*X Rifle offers advances in rifle chassis design that have already paved the way for future chassis designs as they relate to increased modularity, decreased weight, as well as improved affordability; all important benefits and features to the firearms enthusiast.

“The MOD*X Rifle was designed around the extremely popular MOD*X GEN III Modular Rifle System,” says Jason Combs, President and Founder of American Built Arms Company. “Along with our recent relationship with Remington Outdoor Company, we were able to merge the Model 700 SPS Tactical AAC-SD in both .308 and 6.5 Creedmoor to create one outstanding, bolt action rifle.”

Due to the modularity of the MOD*X GEN III chassis, the MOD*X Rifle will be able to accept a variety of after-market products such as the A*B Arms MOD*X GEN III Side Folder Mechanism, KeyMod accessories, etc. The MOD*X Rifle comes standard with extras like the A*B Arms Urban Recoil Pad, the Ergo 4009-BK pistol grip, the A*B Arms Xtreme 13.5-inch aluminum hand guard and a heavy, threaded barrel. The MOD*X Rifle will be sold through A*B Arms Distributors and Dealers across the U.S. www.abarms.com

Featuring the Ruger Elite 452 AR-Trigger, Magpul MOE SL stock and Magpul MOE grip, the AR-Lower Elite is a premium platform for those wishing to assemble their own modern sporting rifle. The AR-Lower Elite is built from the same hard-coat anodized, CNC-machined, 7075-T6 forged lower receiver as the Ruger AR-556. This lower receiver ships with an upgraded trigger and furniture and is fully assembled to include the pivot and takedown pins, bolt catch, magazine release, trigger guard, mil-spec buffer tube, buffer and spring. The addition of a complete, mil-spec upper receiver assembly of the consumer’s choice will complete this custom modern sporting rifle. www.Ruger.com

Firearms training in general is challenging in of itself, and training new students who are not familiar with the AR rifle proves even tougher. After 24 years as a firearms instructor for the U.S. Department of the Treasury, Edgardo Tolentino knew there had to be a way to train with and handle the AR more safely. That’s why he developed the Modified Bolt Catch (MBC).

The MBC is a Drop-In Modification that will fit all Mil-Spec AR firearms. It converts the mechanical operation of an AR firearm from semi-automatic/auto-loading/self-loading to single-shot/manual loading. An AR firearm fitted with an MBC makes an excellent training platform.

Try out the MBC so you can see for yourself the wide range of benefits it provides. Whether you install it in your personal AR rifles or in a law enforcement agency’s AR rifles, it makes an excellent training platform. Since the MBC is made to Mil-Spec standard measurements, aftermarket accessories sold for use on standard bolt catches to allow ambidextrous operation can be utilized. At a Manufacturer Suggested Retail Price of less than $40.00, it is a very affordable option even if you have multiple AR firearms. www.tier5solutions.com

Powered by an AAA battery, the CompM5 can remain constantly on for over 5 years depending on the intensity setting. Aimpoint sights are designed for the “both eyes open” method which greatly enhances situational awareness and target acquisition. Thanks to the optical design, the red dot follows the movement of the user’s eye while remaining fixed on target, eliminating any need for centering. www.aimpoint.com

Sighting-in the new 3-9×50 is made easy with precise ¼-inch@100 yards reticle adjustments and Spring-Loaded Instant Zero-Reset turrets, which can be returned to the zero-mark after sight-in for enhanced confidence. The BUCKMASTERS II 3-9×50 also has a fixed 100-yard parallax setting, generous eye relief and is waterproof, fogproof and shockproof. NikonSportOptics.com

CMMG
MkG45 GUARD

CMMG has announced the release of the MkG45 GUARD—a new AR15 rifle chambered in the iconic .45 ACP caliber. The GUARD is offered in five different configurations, operates on CMMG’s new, patent pending Radial Delayed Blowback system and is fed from Glock magazines.

While the straight blowback system found on most pistol-caliber AR carbines utilizes a non-rotating bolt assembly, the Radial Delayed Blowback system used on the GUARD has a bolt carrier group (BCG) that appears similar to that found on a direct impingement AR15 but operates completely differently. The rotating bolt is the key to the Radial Delayed Blowback system. It is the act of the bolt being forced to rotate and unlock that slows down the BCG just enough to safely cycle .45 ACP while keeping the BCG and buffer lighter than 9mm AR15’s.

The MkG45 GUARD comes with one 13-round factory Glock 21 magazine. For optimal reliability, CMMG recommends using factory double-stack GLOCK .45 ACP magazines. Bolt weight kits will be sold separately for those who wish to fine-tune the GUARD for +P ammunition or suppressor usage. MSRP: Prices vary depending on model www.cmmginc.com

FN America, LLC, is pleased to announce the latest addition to the FN Military Collector Series—the semi-auto FN M249S Para or Paratrooper model, originally developed for airborne troops. Building on the company’s unique tradition of offering semi-automatic variants of the most popular military-designed firearms, the rifle will join the full-size FN M249S Standard and the FN 15 Military Collector M4 and M16. The M249S Para is the fourth in their series of classic, semi-automatic FN military rifles, and like the Standard, the Para is authentic to the last possible detail. You’ll notice only two major differences between the semi- and full-auto versions—the barrel length and reconfigured internal components to change the rifle’s operation from open-bolt to closed-bolt. Authenticity was critical in this series, and they changed as little as possible. The rifle features a machine-gun-grade, 16.1-inch, cold hammer-forged barrel, closed-bolt for semi-automatic-only operation, classic M249 flip-up feed tray, integrated steel bipod, robust gas-piston system and the iconic telescoping and rotating buttstock, making it lighter and more compact. The rifles will be available in either black or Flat Dark Earth (FDE). The guns will accept either 30-round M-16 style magazines or 200-round plastic ammo boxes.
Battle Rifle Company has announced its all-new 2017 BR4 Cutlass rifle. The Cutlass is based on Battle Rifle Company’s best-selling Spectre Rifle and is specifically designed for MARSEC (Maritime Security) operations and shipboard usage. The Cutlass is built with care to ensure long-lasting life in extreme conditions. Its extended rail and low-profile gas block allow for more accessories to be installed, making it well-suited for shipboard, coastal and all-weather operations. They built the Cutlass so that no direct ferrous, metal-to-metal contact is made throughout the entire rifle, ensuring corrosion-free operation, even after months at sea. This rifle is perfect for shipboard operations, both coastal and riverine. If you live or work on the water, this gun is perfect for you! Additionally, Battle Rifle Company is introducing a new color for 2017. The MARSEC rifles will be available in the all-new Battle Rifle Ocean Blue—a marine gray-blue which provides a great contrast for this special rifle.
Gemtech has just introduced its first new suppressors for 2017. The first is their new LUNAR-45. The Gemtech Lunar-45 is the culmination of decades of silencer innovation. They have created the lightest and quietest modular .45 suppressor available that is able to be taken apart and cleaned. The Lunar-45 is crafted from military-grade aluminum and titanium for the utmost in durability and strength. The modular suppressor is available in either a short length (6.9 inches) or a long length (8.5 inches), depending on the shooter’s needs. The short suppressor is said to have a 136 dB noise reduction, and the longer version has a 129 dB reduction. Gemtech offers a variety of mounting options for the Lunar-45 allowing it to be used with a variety of platforms and calibers. The new suppressor is also full-auto-rated.

The other new suppressor is their INTEGRA, which is an AR-15 integrally suppressed upper receiver. The new suppressed upper will be available in both 5.56 and 300 BLK. Gemtech has teamed up with NEMO Arms to create the smallest and easiest-to-maintain package the shooting world has ever seen. The INTEGRA utilizes Gemtech’s proven G-Core Technology that is removable, cleanable and replaceable while still bringing the best sound reduction of any similar-sized package. The NEMO Arms patented gas block eliminates blowback, making this upper more comfortable to shoot. The barrels of both units offer either 10- or 10.5-inch lengths with integrated lengths of 16.1 inches overall.
Sturm, Ruger & Co., Inc., is proud to announce the addition of the Ruger American Pistol Compact in .45 Auto. This newest compact model is offered in the “PRO” configuration with no external manual safety. Originally introduced in December 2015, the feature-rich Ruger American Pistol was designed with the latest U.S. Military standards in mind and was tested in the harshest environments to ensure the rugged reliability consumers have come to expect from Ruger. Ruger polled law enforcement and military trainers throughout the country to select the form, function and features of the Ruger American Pistol. The resulting pistol combines a recoil-reducing barrel cam (which better spreads recoil over time) with a low-mass slide, low center of gravity and a low-bore axis to provide better balance, less felt recoil and less muzzle flip than comparable pistols. The Ruger American Pistol also features a pre-tensioned striker system, which allows for a short take-up trigger with positive reset, and a modular wrap-around grip system that adjusts palm swell and trigger reach to fit a wide range of hand sizes. With a 3.75-inch barrel, overall dimensions of 7.25 inches long, 4.65 inches high and a weight of 28.6 ounces, the Ruger American Pistol Compact model shares all of the features and rugged reliability of the duty-size gun in a smaller, lighter, more concealable package. It ships in a hard case with medium and large replaceable grip modules and two nickel-Teflon-plated steel magazines (one 10-round extended magazine and one 7-round compact magazine). The American-made Ruger American Pistol is built on a rigid, one-piece, precision-machined, stainless steel chassis with integral frame rails and fire control housing. Additional features include genuine Novak LoMountCarry three-dot sights, a stainless steel slide with a non-reflective, black nitride finish, a one-piece, high-performance, glass-filled nylon grip frame and a mil-standard 1913 accessory rail.
