By Todd Burgreen

The Smith & Wesson M&P 22 Magnum surprised many a firearm pontificator when it arrived earlier this year. Most didn’t see it coming since it doesn’t seem to fill a particular niche in the market. And, while it might be a gun without a clear role, it’s one that we can evaluate without any preconceived notions. Can it serve as an understudy to centerfire handguns? Sure. However, it does not directly mimic any other weapon out there besides its own M&P 5.7 stablemate, which is its own unicorn. How about outright personal defense? Sure. 30 rounds of 22 Magnum is not to be taken lightly, especially as ammunition potency is improved on. Trail gun? Sure. This is probably the most described role considering the M&P 22 Magnum’s light weight (22 ounces) and high capacity (30 rounds). Plinking or target shooting? Absolutely, considering its lack of recoil, flat-faced trigger, and ability to mount a red dot optic for further sighting enhancement. Any trigger time is good trigger time.

A loadout of 30 rounds of 22 Magnum is not to be taken lightly, especially considering the potency of modern, evolved 22 WMR ammunition.

Sometimes you just have to go with it and not ask why. That’s the sort of impression that the new M&P 22 Magnum semi-auto generates. Who doesn’t like thirty rounds in a lightweight handgun that can spit them out as fast as you can pull the trigger? The M&P 22 Magnum defies easy categorization. It rejects being labeled as an understudy. It easily separates itself from the competition with its 22 WMR chambering and ultra-high capacity.

While the M&P 22 Magnum’s muzzle blast will surprise you with a signature more typical of a centerfire cartridge, recoil is minimal, though, and thus manageable by all shooters. Though popular as a manually operated rifle and revolver round, few manufactures attempt to build a semi-auto rifle or handgun in 22 WMR. This stems from various reasons including 22 WMR cartridge length standards, case rim specifications, and variations in pressure levels of different brands of 22 WMR ammunition. Each of which provided S&W engineers a chance to shine in problem solving. S&W decided to tackle these issues in creating the M&P 22 Magnum. Additional features further adds credence to its uniqueness.

INNOVATION

S&W engineers had to pay special attention to magazine design with the M&P 22 Magnum. Afterall, what good is 30 rounds of firepower if not capable of being sent downrange when needed. The magazine can be described as pie shaped with the tapered end toward the bullet nose. S&W’s manual describes proper loading procedures to help in reliable operation. The requirements are not onerous. The rimmed case is inserted into a segment of the magazine lips before being pushed to the rear of the magazine. After every five or so rounds are loaded, the magazine is to be tapped on something solid such as palm or table to help seat the rims into the magazine without getting out of orientation sequence. The rim of the 22 Magnum round sitting on top of its neighbor must be kept in front. The magazine loading method is straightforward and does not take any more time to complete than random jamming of rounds into any other magazine.

The S&W TEMPO design used in the M&P 22 Magnum is a gas-operated, locked-breech operating system. A gas port near the muzzle funnels gas rearward between the barrel and the surrounding shroud/sleeve.

One of the potential issues with 22 WMR semi-automatic pistols is the wide range of pressures generated by factory ammunition. The S&W TEMPO operating system addresses this with its combination recoil/gas assist design. It allows the S&W M&P22 Magnum to reliably fire a wide variety of ammunition.

S&W cut-away illustration of the TEMPO gas system. The barrel resides inside a shroud with a gas port venting near the muzzle. (Smith & Wesson)

The S&W TEMPO design is a gas-operated, locked-breech operating system. It was initially unveiled with the S&W M&P 5.7 pistol. The TEMPO system is more of a hybrid recoil gas assist design. A gas port near the muzzle funnels gas rearward between the barrel and surrounding shroud/sleeve. The barrel is surrounded by a shroud. A gas port vents gas into the shroud to interact with the barrel. The barrel has six radial piston rings (three slim ones out by muzzle and thicker ones towards the breech) that regulate gas flow. After initial backward movement of slide, the port siphoned-off gas finishes barrel movement rearward, causing it to encounter a lug in the frame, unlocking the barrel from the shroud and slide to finish the recoil process.

DETAILS

The S&W M&P 22 Magnum is a semi-automatic, internal hammer fired pistol with a 4.3-inch barrel. The overall length is 8.4 inches, and the height is 5.9 inches. The empty weight is only 22 ounces. A loaded magazine weighs a mere 6 ounces. This means that a fully loaded M&P 22 Magnum weighs less than 2 pounds. S&W has installed green fiber optic front and fixed rear sights onto the pistol.

M&P 22 Magnum controls are minimal—flat trigger, ambidextrous safety, and slide lock levers. The dust cover features an integrated Picatinny style rail for attaching lights or other accessories. In front of the rear sight, one will find two screws indicating that S&W has tapped and threaded the slide to accommodate one of the many miniature red dot sights that use the Shield RMSc footprint. Each pistol ships with two magazines and a padded plastic case. As expected, the magazines are constructed of high-strength polymer, similar to the M&P 22 Magnum’s frame.

A BETTER WAY TO CONNECT

Smith & Wesson has embraced that we live in a red dot world by milling the M&P 22 Magnum’s slide to accept red dots using the RMSc footprint. (Smith & Wesson)

A Zero Tech Thrive HD Red Dot Micro Reflex optic was mounted on the M&P 22 Magnum and used for the majority of our evaluation. Weighing only 6 ounces, the Zero Tech Thrive HD Micro Reflex’s features advanced shake awake technology. The Thrive HD projects a 3 MOA dot with ten adjustable brightness levels while offering up to 150,000 hours of runtime with a CR2032 battery. Zero Tech has designed the Thrive HD to be recoil, fog, and waterproof.

The Zero Tech Thrive HD/S&W M&P 22 Magnum combo performed better than expected. The natural pointability of the M&P 22 Magnum comes into its own in this realm with the Zero Tech Thrive HD doing its part. The Thrive HD’s rectangular lens offers a superior field of view compared to other red dot options. The minimal frame of the Thrive HD disappears when focusing on the target with the red dot. The dot is crisp with no halos or disfiguration. The red dot was “there” and seamlessly located at first draw. This is a compliment to the S&W choosing a direct mount method (instead of an adapter plate setup) allowing the Zero Tech to sit as low as possible on the slide. The M&P 22 Magnum’s already low bore axis is further enhanced with a subtle beavertail and undercut trigger guard allowing for a very stable sight picture no matter how many or how rapidly rounds are fired.

TIME TO MAKE NOISE

It was a surprise to find the number of 22 Magnum loads directed towards the personal defense realm. Hornady and Federal offer prime examples of this in the form of Hornady’s 45-grain Critical Defense and Federal’s 45-grain PUNCH loads for the 22 Magnum.

The S&W M&P 22 Magnum was tested with a myriad of ammunition from Hornady, Winchester, Speer, and Federal, such as Hornady 30-grain V-Max, 45-grain Critical Defense, Federal 45-grain Punch, 40-grain JHP & FMJ, Speer 40-grain GDHP-SB and Winchester FMJ & 45-grain PDX 1 Defender JHP. S&W provides recommendations for ammunition to be used in the M&P 22 Magnum based on its own testing. Range time exhibited all positives in terms of performance and reliability. The trigger pull was a pleasant surprise with minimal creep and light weight required to initiate cartridge ignition. Out RCBS pull weight gauge showed an average of just over 4 pounds after multiple pull tests.

With a 30-round magazine, it did not take long to send large quantities of rounds downrange with many willing volunteers stuffing magazines and running the M&P 22 Magnum’s trigger. Out of over 400 rounds fired, there were a handful of malfunctions. Most of these were traceable to a volunteer not holding the M&P 22 Magnum firmly and high up on the grip. Another anecdote is the surprisingly loud report the M&P 22 Magnum emits. Ear pro should definitely not be ignored. This is based on the 22 WMR being primarily chambered in rifle length barrels, and thus, the use of slower burning powders that do not get consumed in the 4.3-inch barrel. This made firing the pistol more like firing a centerfire defensive handgun minus the associated recoil. Plate racks and other targets strewn around Echo Valley Training Center were engaged repeatedly, as were more traditional paper targets in an effort to get the full sense of the M&P 22 Magnum’s capabilities.

Accuracy with the rimfire S&W M&P 22 Magnum was more than acceptable and probably better than most users are capable of. It was no problem keeping rounds clustered together even at 25 yards.

Accuracy with the rimfire S&W M&P 22 Magnum was more than acceptable and probably superior to what most users are capable of when being fired from any non-bench position (which is its raison d’être to begin with.) It was no problem keeping rounds in the “A” zone of the IPSC targets back to 25 yards with the aid of the Zero Tech Thrive HD red dot. It’s very likely that accuracy applies to shots taken from further out as long as users resist the temptation to simple blast rounds downrange knowing thirty 22 WMR rounds are sitting in the magazine awaiting release. Recoil is minimal, though, and manageable by all shooters.

PERFORMANCE

Avg.
LESS IS BETTER

The M&P 22 Magnum’s magazine can be described as pie shaped.

The 22 Magnum chambering will instantly give it a black mark in terms of terminal ballistic performance. I offer a counterintuitive thought—perhaps the 22 Magnum is an asset in such a lightweight package with so much firepower on board. Let me finish before snorting and scrolling on by.

Compact pistol sales outpace full size handguns and rifles many times over. Manufacturers have answered the call by placing 380 ACP and even 9 mm cartridges into platforms previously reserved for 22 LR, 25 Auto, or 32 ACP chamberings. The wave of new shooters is more than welcome; however, this is a recipe for a poor initial experience when combining such small weapons with stouter recoiling cartridges. Handy-to-carry does not translate into comfortable to shoot. A pistol chambered in 22 Magnum may be more appropriate option for certain sections of the gun-buying public.

Increased 22 Magnum ammunition performance (not an oxymoron) in the 80s was a major reason why 25 ACP chamberings in pocket pistols fell off. It was a surprise to find the number of 22 Magnum loads directed towards the personal defense realm. Hornady and Winchester offer prime examples in the form of Hornady’s 45-grain Critical Defense and Winchester’s 45-grain PDX 1 loads. Speer and Federal weighs in with 40-grain GDHP-SB and 45-grain PUNCH loads for the 22 Magnum. The M&P 22 Magnum chronoed loads across an RCBS chronograph in the 1125-1350 fps range, depending on bullet weights being fired.

As I brought up at the beginning of the article, is the S&W M&P 22 Magnum a candidate for personal defense, a trail/kit gun, target shooter, or dare we say, just for fun? Each user will have to decide what roles the M&P 22 Magnum will fill in their collection. The S&W M&P 22 Magnum’s high capacity and surprisingly light weight is extremely attractive in whatever role it is destined for. Overall, the M&P 22 Magnum is a valid tool offering real world application.

The Kentucky Rifle

One of the first truly iconic arms of America was pioneered by German and Swiss gunsmiths who immigrated to the Colonies in the 18th century. Popularly known as the Kentucky Rifle or Pennsylvania Rifle, the American Long Rifle allowed accurate shooting up to 200 yards or more, a decisive advantage to backwoodsmen while hunting in the western wilderness or sniping Red Coats during the Revolutionary War and War of 1812.

Colt Model 1851 Navy

A personal favorite of Samuel Colt, the Model 1851 Navy was one of the most prevalent sidearms on both sides of the American Civil War, even serving as the basis for numerous Confederate produced brass-frame revolver styles like the Griswold & Gunnison Revolver and the Leech & Rigdon revolvers. The sturdy sixgun’s impressive production numbers, widespread use on the American frontier, and status as the favored revolver for Western legends like Wild Bill Hickok, Buffalo Bill Cody, and countless early gunslingers elevate the 1851 Navy to one of best American guns of all time.

The Sharps Rifle and Carbine

The various models of Sharps rifles and carbines earned a reputation as iconic arms of America in the Civil War, the Old West, and in popular culture thanks to films like ‘Quigley Down Under’ and ‘True Grit.’ Produced from the Antebellum Era through the late-19th century and noted for their exceptional accuracy and reliability, the Sharps filled a key role during the Civil War when the Union purchased approximately 80,000 Sharps carbines and almost 10,000 rifles. Specially ordered Sharps rifles were famously fielded by the 1st and 2nd U.S. Sharpshooter Regiments (the Berdan’s Sharpshooters) to great effect.

The Springfield Model 1861 Rifle-Musket

The Springfield Model 1861 rifle-musket became one of the most prolific Northern rifles issued during the Civil War, taking the field in quantity from 1862 onward, from Shiloh to Appomattox. With over 1 million being produced during the conflict by Springfield Armory and two dozen other firearm producers, the dependable .58 caliber rifle improved precision over infantry traditional musket. This percussion powerhouse finds a worthy spot on our list of America’s best guns of all time thanks to its role in winning the Civil War, protecting workers on the Transcontinental Railroad, and serving as the material platform for a line of Springfield breechloading rifles that would culminate with the 1873 Trapdoor.

As the most widely used single shot military breechloader of the 19th century, the Remington Rolling Block’s service record is expansive. The gun was produced in a variety of calibers, both rimfire and centerfire, and its action was sturdy enough to easily accommodate the increased pressure of new smokeless powders hitting the market in the late 1890s.

The Colt Single Action Army revolver is a no-brainer inclusion for any best guns of all time list. The classic lever gun’s accuracy, simplicity, and rugged resilience earned it a place in millions of gun racks across America. In WW1, the Model 1897 was officially adopted as the U.S. “Model of 1917 Trench Shotgun” and modified with a bayonet lug, a heat shield, and a shorter barrel for maneuverability in the trenches of Western Europe.
Not all iconic arms of America were born in the Land of Stars and Stripes. Initially chambered in .30-03, the rifle suffered from poor trajectory and excessive barrel wear. However, by chambering a lighter, spitzer bullet and a cooler burning propellant, a legend was born in the .30-06 cartridge, and battlefield and deer stand would soon feel the wrath of the mighty Springfield Model 1903.

The inventor subsequently marketed the weapon to everyone from law enforcement to ranchers, but the deadly submachinegun found an unexpected niche with organized crime. On the eve of WW2, the Thompson submachine gun was adopted by the U.S. military and employed by the British as well, with over 1.5 million of the new military-issued M1928A1 and M1A1 produced. This earned the weapon international recognition through German and Japanese propaganda posters that portrayed the U.S. and her allies as Tommy-toting gangsters.

Though the refinement of the M16 was not without its hurdles, the rifle’s updates and successors soon stepped up to the challenges of modern warfare and became the longest-serving infantry long arm in U.S. military history, a contemporary defender of Lady Liberty, and one of the indisputably iconic arms of America.

“The team at Smith & Wesson aimed to design a pistol carbine that was compatible with various M&P series pistol magazines,” said John Myles, Senior Manager of New Products. “We exceeded that initial desire by introducing side-folding mechanics that deliver a unique compact feature and allow the user to keep their sight system mounted on the gun both in the folded and extended positions. Extra magazine storage in the buttstock, familiar M&P fire controls and reliable palmswell grip adaptors all make this new pistol carbine a great addition to the M&P family.”

Additional features include a handguard with an upper Picatinny rail and M-LOK slots for accessory mounting capabilities, a flat-face trigger design that offers a crisp single-action trigger break, and four interchangeable palmswells for maximum comfort. The M&P FPC also comes with a carrying bag designed with multiple Velcro storage compartments to secure additional equipment for easy transport. This new folding pistol carbine is proudly made in the U.S.A. and has an MSRP of $659.00.

Built for competition right out of the box, the Performance Center M&P 9 M2.0 Competitor metal-framed 9mm pistol is designed to give competitive shooters the edge. The Competitor comes with a 5-inch barrel, has an enhanced sear for lighter, crisper trigger let-off, and includes a flared magazine well for fast and efficient reloads. Boasting a new look, the aggressive lightening cuts on both the top and sides of the slide ultimately reduce the amount of weight in front of the chamber and, in return, help improve the recoil balance point. The slide is cut for optics, includes a fiber optic front sight, and blacked out serrated rear sight.

By Frank Iannamico

Smith & Wesson

The Smith & Wesson Corporation is one of the oldest firms in the United States and is still actively in business. Horace Smith and Daniel B. Wesson joined forces in 1852 to develop a repeating firearm. By 1857, the company employed 25 people. During that year, a total of four revolvers were manufactured. The U.S. Smith & Wesson Corporation has long been recognized for producing some of the finest revolvers in the world. Many served the United States and the Allies with distinction during World War I and World War II.

Smith & Wesson (S&W) began the development of their Model N Hand Ejector revolver in 1905. The large frame revolver was originally designed for the .44 Special cartridge. The first model was also known as the “Triple Lock;” the name referring to a third locking lug on the cylinder crane. The third locking mechanism was thought to be necessary due to the increased power of the .44 cartridge.

Right-side view of serial number Model 1917 35803. The original government contract price for each revolver with two clips was $14.75.

During World War I, the British Ministry of Munitions contracted with Colt and S&W in 1914 to manufacture revolvers chambered in .455 Webley in order to supplement a shortage of their Webley Mk VI revolvers. Smith & Wesson manufactured approximately 75,000 of its high-quality Second Model, Hand Ejector, double-action revolvers in .455 caliber for Great Britain and Canada. The S&W revolvers were adopted as “substitute standard,” designated as the “Pistol Smith & Wesson .455 with 6.5-inch barrel Mark I.” The British considered the extra locking lug redundant and requested it be eliminated from the design. Subsequent orders, lacking the third locking lug and ejector shroud, were known as the Mark II. As the U.S. prepared to enter the First World War, there were no additional British contracts, as production shifted to the U.S. to arm a rapidly growing U.S. Army.

In anticipation of America’s eventual involvement in the conflict, the factory increased its efforts to develop a revolver chambered for the standard U.S. service .45 ACP cartridge. The U.S. Army tested a S&W Hand Ejector revolver configured to fire the standard .45-caliber round during 1916–1917. After testing, the revolver was deemed satisfactory for military use; with this endorsement, S&W began tooling up for large-scale manufacture of the U.S. Model 1917 .45-caliber, double-action, six-shot revolver.

Early Production M1917s

Early production of the S&W M1917 revolver featured hammers with fine circular grooves. The Army felt as though the milled grooves would collect dirt and possibly cause malfunctions. As per the Army’s request, subsequent production hammers were smooth. Other features of early production were wooden grips that were dished at the top; these were also eliminated, replaced by full-rounded wood grips. Early revolvers had a round top strap and a rear sight with a small U-shaped notch. Later manufacture, post-WWI civilian production, had a flat top frame with a square-shaped notch for the rear sight. The revolvers were finished in a low-gloss blue, with a color case-hardened trigger and hammer. A 5.5-inch-long, 6-groove barrel had a right-hand twist of one turn in 14.659 inches. A lanyard ring was placed at the bottom of the weapon’s butt. The overall length was 10.79 inches. The S&W revolver was slightly lighter at 2 pounds, 4 ounces than Colt’s 1917 model that weighed 2 pounds, 7 ounces.

Early production S&W revolvers have the final inspection-acceptance mark of U.S. Army Inspector of Ordnance Gilbert H. Stewart. Later manufacture acceptance marks were the “eagle head” with an inspector’s number beneath it.

The original government contract price for each revolver with two clips was $14.75. The price was later increased to $15.60. Spare barrels were priced at $5.58 each. S&W production ran from October 1917 until January 1919, with approximately 163,635 Model 1917 revolvers manufactured. Serial numbers were placed on the butt, cylinder, underside of the barrel, rear of the yoke and in pencil on the inside of the right wood grip. Along with the serial number, the butt was marked: “U.S. ARMY MODEL 1917.” The top of the barrel was roll-marked “SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD MASS U.S.A. PATENTED DEC. 17, 1901, FEB 6, 1906, SEP 14, 1909.” The left side of the barrel was marked “S&W D.A.45.” The bottom of the barrel was stamped “UNITED STATES PROPERTY.” A provisional inspection mark on early component production was a letter “S,” reported to be the mark of Gilbert H. Stewart. Later production used the eagle’s head with a letter and number code: “S2,” “S3,” etc. The S&W trademark logo, normally stamped on its commercial firearms, was not used on the military contract 1917 revolvers.

Note: The number stamped on the butt of the S&W military M1917 is the weapon’s factory serial number. The factory serial number on the Colt-manufactured U.S. Army Model 1917 is stamped on the frame. A different, non-matching number is stamped on the butt; it is not the serial number but is a government control number.

Each assembled weapon and spare barrel were proof-fired in the presence of an Ordnance inspector, using a special high-pressure cartridge. After successfully passing the test, a proof mark was applied to each weapon by the person performing the test. Each revolver was function-fired with six rounds; three in double-action and three in single-action. Weapons were test-fired for accuracy at a range of 15 yards. A 2,000-round endurance test, using standard-issue ball ammunition, was performed on one revolver from each lot. The Army Inspector of Ordnance (AIO) acceptance stamp was “GHS” of Officer Gilbert H. Stewart on early production; later the “flaming bomb” ordnance or the “eagle head” insignia was used to designate government acceptance.

Holsters & Clips

There were three different leather holsters issued to carry the M1917 revolver. The earliest was the M1909 model designed at the Rock Island Arsenal. During World War II, the M2 holster was introduced which was similar to the M1909 holster, except the butt of the weapon was pointed rearward. The WWII M4 holster was similar but had a closed bottom to keep debris out of the muzzle.

Ammunition was issued on the 3-round half-moon clips. During WWI, a three-pocket canvas pouch was supplied to carry two clips in each pocket for a total of 18 rounds. During the post-War period, a handy six-round “full-moon” clip was designed by a S&W engineer. Although the clips are reusable, they can be difficult to load and unload. To eliminate the need for the clips, the Peters Cartridge Company introduced the .45 Auto Rim, also known as the 11.5x23R, in 1920. The rimmed version of the .45 ACP cartridge allowed the Model 1917 revolver to fire and eject all the spent cases without the clips.

During production of the M1917 revolvers, there were a few labor issues at the S&W factory that resulted in the government organization, the National Operating Company (NOC), taking over management of the S&W plant. After the end of WWI and subsequent production of the revolvers for the military concluded, S&W reassumed management of their factory in 1919. After the military contracts ended, there were a substantial number of unfinished revolvers and parts remaining. After the rebuild contracts were terminated, S&W purchased the parts from the government. During the 1920s, civilian production of the N frame revolvers resumed. The commercial 1917 first appeared as a regular cataloged model in “Catalog D-2,” issued in January 1921.

In 1937, Smith & Wesson sold 25,000 .45-caliber Model 1917 revolvers to Brazil, assembled with new manufactured parts and frames. There was a second Brazilian contract for 12,000 additional revolvers in 1946. Many of the components used to assemble the revolvers for the second contract were left over from World War I production; most of the frames and parts have military inspection markings on them.

The .45 ACP revolver was available in several finishes and barrel lengths. The Model 22 is no longer in production. COURTESY DREW PASKOVITCH

John Dillinger

A stolen S&W 1917 revolver was used by infamous outlaw John Dillinger, with the serial number and all military markings carefully ground off. Like many of the weapons used by Dillinger, the revolver is in the custody of the FBI.

In the Movies and Television

The S&W Model 1917 revolvers have been featured in films and video games in the hands of both good guys and villains.

There were two different revolvers used by the hero Indiana Jones in the 1981 Steven Spielberg movie “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” The .45-caliber S&W 1917 used in the movie was not a U.S. military contract revolver, as evidenced by the S&W trademark logo on the left side of the frame, absent on military revolvers. The barrel was shortened down to a length of 4 inches. Interestingly, the serial number of that revolver, 172449, falls in the reported range of Brazil’s second 1946 contract for the Model of 1937, a copy of the M1917 revolver.

The other revolver used in the movie was a British-issued .455-caliber S&W 2nd Model Hand Ejector with a lanyard ring and a barrel shortened to a length of 4 inches. This was reportedly the revolver Indiana Jones used in the famous scene where he is confronted in the Cairo marketplace by a black-robed man with an over-sized scimitar. As the man began displaying his skill with his weapon, Indy, desperately preoccupied with finding his kidnapped love interest Marion, simply draws his revolver and shoots the swordsman.

Brad Pitt’s character, Sergeant Don “Wardaddy” Collier, in the 2014 Hollywood World War II movie “Fury” carried a S&W M1917 revolver as his personal sidearm. His revolver sported a set of plastic “sweetheart” grips with the image of an unidentified female. Other films of note that featured the S&W Model 1917: “The Highwaymen” by actor Kevin Costner’s character Frank Hamer; “Hacksaw Ridge”by characters Tom and Desmond Doss; “All the Kings Men”by actor Mark Ruffalo’s characterDr. Adam Stanton.

There is still quite a collector interest in the old .45-caliber 1917 military revolvers. Enough interest that S&W reintroduced a commercial slightly updated version of the 1917 for their Classic Series, designated as the Model 22. There is also a modern version .45-caliber revolver from S&W in stainless steel, the Model 625.

Apex Announces New CZ P-10 Trigger Kit

Apex Tactical Specialties is pleased to announce the introduction of its new Action Enhancement Kit for the CZ P-10 line of 9mm pistols. Starting at just $104.95, the package includes an Apex Action Enhancement Trigger, Apex Performance Disconnector and Apex Slide Cover Plate, which, when installed, significantly improves the feel of the trigger pull while reducing pull weight.

Apex’s engineering and design team developed the Action Enhancement Kit as a direct drop-in replacement for the factory polymer trigger, disconnector and slide cover plate of the CZ P-10. The end user has the option of using either the Apex or factory disconnector to achieve one of two distinct trigger pulls.

Installing the Apex Trigger, Performance Disconnector and Slide Cover Plate will reduce the trigger pull to sub-4.0 lbs and provide a light, smooth take-up with linear rolling trigger break at striker release and a reduction in over-travel.

For more of a duty/carry trigger, using the CZ factory disconnector with the Apex Trigger and Slide Plate Cover will provide a more defined trigger break at striker release and a pull weight at approximately 5.5 lbs.

Both trigger installation options require the use of the Apex Slide Cover Plate which is an engineered product designed specifically to work with the Apex and factory components to achieve the proper trigger performance.

The new trigger kit, in Black, is now available for pre-order. Retailers and wholesale distributors that have not yet ordered and wish to stock the new trigger kit can contact Apex at dealer@apextactical.com or (623) 322-0200 for pricing and quantity availability.

Smith & Wesson announced today that it has introduced a new, bullpup-style pump action shotgun: the M&P12. Designed for home protection, the new M&P12 shotgun is packed with features in a compact, maneuverable package. The M&P12 is chambered for 12 gauge 3” shells but is able to accept a combination of stan-dard 2 ¾”, 3” magnum, and mini-shell loads, offering the user a variety of load options to best suit their needs. The M&P12 also features complete ambidextrous controls, an M&P grip, picatin-ny-style rail, and more.

Kyle Tengwall, Vice President of Marketing, said, “Smith & Wesson has a long, storied history of making handguns for self-defense, yet no conversation around personal protection can be complete without mentioning the 12 gauge shotgun. With the introduction of the new M&P12, Smith & Wesson is able to offer our consumers a personal protection product in a variety of categories: pistol, revolver, rifle, and shotgun. Today, we’re excited to unveil the M&P12 – a new category introduction for Smith & Wesson, and a firearm that’s purpose-built for protection and a blast to shoot at the range.

The M&P12 shotgun is built on a reliable, pump-action platform with two independent magazine tubes that feature load assist buttons to simplify loading and unloading. Each tube can hold up to 7 rounds of standard 2-3/4” shells, or up to 6 rounds of 3” magnum shells. Mini-shells can also be utilized for maximum ammo adaptability. Magazine tubes are easily selected using a simple, push button selector, providing the operator with a visual cue of which magazine tube is feeding the barrel.

The M&P12 features fully ambidextrous controls, utilizing an oversized action release that can be engaged from either side of the firearm as well as the familiar AR-style ambidextrous safety selector. Hallmark M&P features can be found throughout the shotgun, including the new M&P grip with four interchangeable palmswell grip inserts to customize fit for the user. The M&P12’s bullpup design delivers maximum maneuverability with an over-all length of 27.8”, as well as M-LOK slots on the barrel shroud to easily accessorize with lights, lasers, and more. The M&P12 shotgun ships with both modified and cylinder choke tubes, four palmswell grip inserts, a 15” cable lock, choke tube wrench, & hard plastic, foam-lined case.
The MSRP on the new M&P 12 shotgun is $1,165. smith-wesson.com
