The traditional German weapon manufacturer Carl Walther GmbH became famous for its pistols and sports rifles. The attempts to gain a foothold in other segments as well brought only limited success. Some developments remained only on paper, such as a folding stock with an aiming device for shooting around corners.

After World War II, the new German police and the Federal Border Guard (Bundesgrenzschutz / BGS) received an initial supply of weapons, vehicles and equipment mainly from stocks of wartime production. This included, for example, the Italian Beretta submachine gun, which was formerly manufactured under German occupation. A slightly modified version with a push-button safety incorporated into the wooden stock was adopted as the “Maschinenpistole 1,” or in short “MP 1.”

Like many other business owners, Fritz Walther, Carl’s son, fled from his hometown Zella-Mehlis in East Germany to the West Zone. There he initially manufactured civilian products such as calculating machines and tools before he was allowed to start manufacturing pistols again after Allied restrictions were relaxed in the early 1950s. During this time, a curious development also took place, of which only a few photos in the company archives are still preserved today.

Shooting at an opponent is one thing, but in a gunfight, the opponent shoots back. Therefore, it is generally advantageous to take cover and to expose as little body area as possible. As early as 1944, the Wehrmacht tested a curved barrel attachment for the Sturmgewehr 44, which allowed firing at the enemy from cover. A complicated prismatic sight helped with aiming. However, this device was too heavy, unwieldy to use, and the curved barrel quickly wore out due to the forced guidance of the projectiles. Series production and use in combat were never realized.

Walther now went a different way. Instead of a bulky, curved barrel extension, a special sighting device in combination with a laterally swivelling stock was to provide a remedy. For testing on a submachine gun, Walther used the Beretta which was in German service at the time. The wooden stock was sawn off behind the trigger, and a mount for a folding stock similar in design to the MP38/40 was attached. This mount could also be swivelled sideways.

On the top of the receiver, near the end cap, a pivotable mirror was placed, with which the shooter could take aim via rear and front sights. The resulting higher sight line made it necessary to increase the height of both sights. On the photos it is not visible whether the mirror is connected to the stock joint and pivots synchronously. It would make sense, however. Otherwise the shooter would have to realign the mirror manually with every slight swivel movement of the stock.

The posture in a shoot-around-corner firing position is uncomfortable and probably only intended for unusual situations or emergencies. The weight of the loaded weapon of approximately 9 pounds and the recoil forces strain the arm muscles and make accurate aiming difficult. The Walther engineers therefore attached a clamp with two spikes near the middle of the barrel. These spikes can be folded out on the left or right side as required, and the shooter can use them to hook the weapon into the bark of a tree, for example. The spikes, however, only serve as a support and are by no means able to bear the whole weight of the gun alone.

A T-shaped metal grip, which is mounted between the trigger guard and the magazine well, serves as a further aid for the shooter. It can also be swivelled to the left and right and allows the shooter to keep his front hand behind the cover. When not in use, the grip swings to the left side and rests partially in a cut-out in the wooden stock.

Written documents about this development do not seem to exist anymore, and nothing is known about a trial or even a presentation to police or military officials. Therefore, only three photos remain in the company archive. This purely mechanical device for shooting around corners probably did not prove to be suitable for practical use, and Walther did not follow up on this idea. Today, thanks to modern technology, international development is already one step further. With a digital camera on the barrel and a small high-resolution color monitor on the swivel stock, shooting around corners has become more comfortable.

GMR-15

The GMR-15 is a massive redesign of our very popular GMR-13 Glock magazine carbine receiver. This new iteration now incorporates last-round lockback and more competition-ready features such as a flared mag. well and easier-to-use mag. release. Like its predecessor, it also utilizes our proprietary 9mm bolt assembly and Silent Captured spring, making for a highly reliable and accurate carbine. With the GMR-15™ also comes a new dedicated 9mm upper receiver with dual top- and side-charge handles.

The GMR-15 is available for custom rifle or upper assembly builds or in a number of ready-to-ship Ready Rifle configurations. Complete upper and lower receiver kits will be available soon for home builders.

VMOS Bolt Carriers

JP Variable Mass Operating System (VMOS) bolt carriers are designed to work in tandem with our Silent Captured Spring to provide tunable mass regulation to rifles in need of it. Geared especially for suppressed shooting, VMOS carriers overcome the excessive fouling and constant need to adjust gas settings native to suppressed rifles. This is thanks to the configurable, reciprocating masses that ensure consist function and reliable deadblow. VMOS carriers are also ideal for exotic caliber rifles or those without an adjustable gas system.

Steel VMOS carriers are available for both largeand small-frame rifles. An aluminum large-frame version is also available for high-performance competition builds.

Microfit Takedown Pins

Since the release of our original JP Tension Pin almost 20 years ago, sloppy receiver fit has been a JP obsession. The new Microfit™ Takedown Pins offer are a tool-less solution to this problem with a premium polished appearance. Oversized pins reduce the slop in overly loose receivers that can reduce rifle accuracy. Undersized pins provide easier takedown for tight receivers such as those with heavy Cerakote buildup.

Microfit Takedown Pins are available individually or in standard, oversized, and undersized sets and now come standard in all JP rifles.

Semi-Auto Case Gauges

Even in the same caliber, the ammo requirements between bolt guns and self-loaders are stark. JP Semi-Auto Case Gauges are the first gauges to acknowledge and account for the more particular ammo preferences of the semi-auto platforms. The gauges guaranty function in any self-loading rifle by verifying that every cartridge will fire to a minimumdepth SAAMI chamber. So, if it fits, it shoots.

.875 Detent Adjustable Gas Blocks (JPGS-10D)

The incomparable level of refinement provided by an adjustable gas system can be undercut by the possibility of gas setting drift. The latest in a long line of JP adjustable gas systems, this new click-adjustable gas block ensures solid retention of gas setting with an easy, reproducible interface. The JPGS-10D model was designed to serve the neglected .875 barrel contour common to Armalite rifles.

Minimized, detent-adjustable JP gas systems are also available in .750 and soon, .936. Locking set screw version is also available in a variety of profiles.

NIKON DEBUTS BLACK RIFLESCOPE SERIES

Nikon doubles down on its commitment to American shooters with the introduction of the new BLACK riflescope series—a new category of dedicated optics with models engineered for both precision longrange rifle and action-shooting AR enthusiasts.

For the precision rifle shooter, Nikon’s BLACK X1000 is offered in a range of 4-16×50 and 6-24×50 models with X-MRAD or X-MOA tactical style reticles synchronized to elevated windage and elevation turrets. AIMPOINT LAUNCHES NEW AR-READY MICRO SIGHTS

Aimpoint has announced the addition of a new line of pre-mounted Micro T-2 and Micro H-2 sights, that are immediately ready for use on AR-15 and M4 Carbine style rifles. These sights come equipped with Aimpoint’s Lever Release Picatinny (LRP) Mount, and a 39mm spacer that provides absolute co-witness with backup iron sights on AR15 and M4 Carbine style rifles. The rail pressure on the LRP is fully adjustable, and the mount allows return-to-zero replacement if the sight is removed and replaced in the same position on the same rifle. The 39mm spacer can be removed in order to lower the optical axis of the sight for use on shotguns or submachineguns. CRIMSON TRACE LAUNCHES LINQ SYSTEM

Crimson Trace continues its leadership position in the firearms laser sight and lights accessory categories with the release of a new industry innovation—the LiNQ® System. This wireless and remote operation system utilizes a powered control grip to activate and operate a forward—or remotely located—light and laser sight module. The two-piece LiNQ System is designed to equip and upgrade nearly all standard long guns with rails and replaceable pistol grips. KAHR INTRODUCES SHORTER BARREL THOMPSON CARBINE

For almost 100 years, the “Chicago Typewriter”, the time-honored submachine gun, has been a favorite among collectors and shooting enthusiasts. Now, Kahr Firearms Group has given the semi-auto version a more authentic look with the introduction of their new barrel design on the Thompson T1-14 carbine. With a barrel length of just 16.5”, it is 1.5” shorter than the existing T1 models with the 18” barrels. The .45 ACP caliber T1-14 has a permanently affixed Cutts compensator which lengthens the finned barrel length to 16.5”, and puts the overall length for the carbine at 39”from buttstock to muzzle. The BATFE recently approved the permanently affixed Cutts compensator as a part of the barrel. The pinned Cutts compensator offered on the 18” barrel models are not considered part of the barrel. This model also features a blade front and open rear adjustable sight and weighs 12.5 lbs. The fixed stock is crafted in luxurious polished American Walnut and has a vertical foregrip. Retail of the new carbine is set at $1,461. Another addition to the shorter barrel 1927A-1 collection is the T1B-14, which specs the same as the T1-14, but instead of a walnut fixed stock, it comes with a detachable buttstock and with vertical foregrip. SUREFIRE UPS V-SERIES WHITE-LIGHT OUTPUTS

SureFire, LLC, manufacturer of high-end illumination tools and tactical products, has upgraded its line of revolutionary V-Series LED flashlights and WeaponLights—which provide both white light and infrared illumination from one sealed head—to dramatically improve the amount of white light they generate. V-Series lights now produce up to 133 percent more white-light output, thanks to improved efficiency in the LED emitters they use. One-battery, three-volt V-Series lights, which previously generated 120 lumens of white light, now produce 250 lumens; two-battery, six-volt versions now produce 350 lumens, a 200-lumen increase from their previous maximum output of 150 lumens. Dual-spectrum SureFire V-Series illumination tools (“V” stands for vampire) feature a white-light and infrared LED inside of one weatherproof head. Unlike other white lights that require an infrared filter to produce IR illumination, a V-Series light doesn’t use a filter, which can be lost, left behind, or damaged.
